EMCConformance
AllRaymarineequipmentandaccessoriesaredesignedtothebestindustry
standardsforuseintherecreationalmarineenvironment.
TheirdesignandmanufactureconformstotheappropriateElectromagnetic
Compatibility(EMC)standards,butcorrectinstallationisrequiredtoensurethat
performanceisnotcompromised.Althougheveryefforthasbeentakentoensure
thattheywillperformunderallconditions,itisimportanttounderstandwhat
factorscouldaffecttheoperationoftheproduct.
TheguidelinesgivenheredescribetheconditionsforoptimumEMCperformance,
butitisrecognizedthatitmaynotbepossibletomeetalloftheseconditionsinall
situations.ToensurethebestpossibleconditionsforEMCperformancewithinthe
constraintsimposedbyanylocation,alwaysensurethemaximumseparation
possiblebetweendifferentitemsofelectricalequipment.
ForoptimumEMCperformance,itisrecommendedthatwhereverpossible
Raymarineequipmentandcablesconnectedtoitare:
Atleast3ft.(1m)fromanyequipmenttransmittingorcablescarryingradio
signalse.g.VHFradios,cablesandantennas.InthecaseofSSBradios,the
distanceshouldbeincreasedto7ft.(2m).
Morethan7ft.(2m)fromthepathofaradarbeam.Aradarbeamcannor-
mallybeassumedtospread20degreesaboveandbelowtheradiatingele-
ment.
Ensurethattheequipmentissuppliedfromaseparatebatteryfromthatusedfor
enginestart.Voltagedropsbelow10V,andstartermotortransients,cancause
theequipmenttoreset.Thiswillnotdamagetheequipment,butmaycausethe
lossofsomeinformationandmaychangetheoperatingmode.
EnsurethatRaymarinespecifiedcablesareused.Cuttingandrejoiningthese
cablescancompromiseEMCperformanceandmustbeavoidedunlessdoingsois
detailedintheinstallationmanual.

SuppressionFerrites
Ifasuppressionferriteisattachedtoacable,thisferriteshouldnotberemoved.If
theferriteneedstoberemovedduringinstallationitmustbereassembledinthe
sameposition.Ifaferriteispackedseparatelyinthecarton,itmustbeinstalledas
soonasthecablesarerun.
Thefollowingillustrationshowstypicalcablesuppressionferritessometimes
usedwithRaymarineequipment.ToensureEMCcompliance,alwaysusethese
ferrites,ifsuppliedbyRaymarineforusewiththisequipment.Ifnotsuppliedby
Raymarine,aferriteisnotrequiredforusewiththisequipment.
ConnectionstoOtherEquipment
IfyourRaymarineequipmentistobeconnectedtootherequipmentusingacable
notsuppliedbyRaymarine,thesuppressionferrite(ifsupplied)MUSTalwaysbe
attachedtothecablenearesttheRaymarineunit.
TFTLCDDisplays
Thecolorsofthedisplaymayseemtovarywhenviewedagainstacolored
backgroundorincoloredlight.Thisisaperfectlynormaleffectthatwillbeseen
withallcolorLCDdisplays.
IncommonwithallThinFilmTransistor(TFT)LCDdisplays,thescreenmayexhibit
afew(lessthan5)wronglyilluminatedpixels.Thesemayappearasblackpixelsin
alightportionofthescreenorascoloredpixelsinblackareas.
CAUTION:Toprovideprotectionagainstthedamagingeffectsof
UVlight,Raymarineadvisesthatyoureplacethesuncover
providedwhenthecolorLCDdisplayisnotinuse.

Chapter1: Introduction
ThismanualprovidesinformationandinstructionsforinstallingyourA65display
andRS12GPSsensor.
1.1 SelectingtheDisplayUnitLocation
YourA65canbemountedusingthemountingbracketsupplied,orconsole
mountedusingtheoptionalflushmountkit.
Beforeyouinstallthedisplay,planitsinstallation,considering:
•Convenience.Themountinglocationshouldbeeasilyaccessibletoallow
operationofthefrontpanelcontrols.
•Access.Theremustbesufficientspacebehindthedisplaytoallowcablecon-
nectionstotherearpanelconnectors,avoidingtightbendsinthecable.
•Interference.Theselectedlocationshouldbefarenoughawayfromdevices
thatmaycauseinterference,suchasmotors,generatorsandradiotransmit-
ters/receivers(seeEMCGuidelines).
•Magneticcompass.Mountthedisplayatleast3ft(1m)awayfromamag-
neticcompass.
•Cableruns.ThedisplayshouldbemountedascloseaspossibletotheDC
powersource.
•Environmental.Thedisplayshouldbeprotectedfromphysicaldamageand
excessivevibration.Althoughthedisplayunitiswaterproof,itisgoodpractice
tomountitinaprotectedareaawayfromprolongedanddirectexposureto
rainandsaltspray.

2.1 Mounting
Note: Themountingbracketandthemountframetowhichthebracketattachesmustbe
removedpriortoflushmounting.
MountingBracketMethod
Themountingbracketcanbeusedtosecurethedisplayunittoadash,charttable,
bulkheadordeckhead.
Youshouldinstallthemountbracketasfollows:
1. Loosentheknobsandremovethebracketfromtheunit.
2. Markthelocationsofthebracketscrewholesonthemountingsurface.
3. Drill9/64”(3mm)pilotholesatthemarkedlocations,takingcarethatthere
arenocablesoranythingthatmaybedamagedbehindthesurface.
4. Alignthebracketholeswiththeholesonthemountingsurface.

5. Usethescrewsandnutssuppliedtosecurelyattachthebrackettothemount-

CAUTION: Installation
Makesuretherearenohiddenelectricalwiresorother
itemsbehindtheselectedlocationbeforeproceeding.
Makesurethereissufficientrearaccessformounting
ANDCABLING.
1. Checktheselectedlocationfortheunit.Aclear,flatareawithsuitableclear-
ancebehindthepanel,isrequired.
2. Attachthetemplateincludedwiththeflushmountkittotheselectedloca-
tion,usingmaskingorself-adhesivetape,takingcarethatitislevel.
3. Useaholesawtomakeapilotholeineachcornerofthecut-outarea.
4. Usingasuitablesaw,cutalongtheinsideedgeofthecut-outline.
5. Detachthemountframefromtheunitbyremovingthefourmountingscrews.
Makesurethattheunitfitsintheareathathasbeencutout.
6. Drillfour3/16in(4.5mm)holesasindicatedonthetemplatetoacceptthe
retainingbolts.
7. Placethegasketontothedisplayunit.
8. Connectthecablestothedisplay,avoidingtightbends.
9. Slidetheunitintotheconsoleandsecureusingtheincludedhardware.
2.2 CableRuns
Wheninstallingsystemcablesconsiderthefollowing:
• Allcablesshouldbeadequatelysecured,protectedfromphysicaldamageand
exposuretoheat.Avoidrunningcablesthroughbilgesordoorways,orclose
tomovingorhotobjects.
• Avoidacutebends.
• Whereacablepassesthroughanexposedbulkheadordeckhead,awater-
tightfeed-throughshouldbeused.
• Securecablesinplaceusingtie-wrapsorlacingtwine.Coilanyextracable
andtieitoutoftheway.
• Donotpullcablesthroughabulkheadordeckheadusingacordattachedto
theconnector.Thiscoulddamagetheconnections.

This1.5m(5ft)cableissuppliedforconnectingtoyourboat’sDCpowersupply.
DCpowerisconnectedatthe3-pinPOWERconnectorontheunit’sconnector
panel.Theconnector(viewedfromtheoutside)andpinfunctionsareshownin
thefollowingdiagramandtable.

PowerSupply
TheA65isintendedforuseonboat’sDCpowersystemsratedfrom10.7to
18 VDC.Thepowerconnectiontotheunitshouldbemadeateithertheoutputof
thebatteryisolatorswitchorataDCpowerdistributionpanel.Powershouldbe
feddirectlytotheA65viaitsowndedicatedcablesystemandprotectedbya
thermalcircuitbreakerorfuseonthered(positive)wirethatisinstalledcloseto
thepowerconnection.
CAUTION: DedicatedPowerConnection
TheA65alsosuppliespowerfortheGPSandsounderunits (ifso
equipped).Tominimizesucceptibilitytodisplayflickeringdueto
powerfluctuations,providethedisplayunitwithitsown
dedicatedconnectiontoboat’spower.
TheREDwiremustbeconnectedtothefeedfromthepositive(+)batteryterminal
andtheBLACKwiretothefeedfromthenegative(–)batteryterminal.Theshield
wire(drain)shouldbeconnectedtotheboat’sRFground.
CAUTION: FuseProtection
Installafastblow4ampfuseonthered(positive)wire.
Ifalongerpowercablerunisrequired,usethesuppliedpowercabletoconnectto
thedisplayunit.Thenuseasuitableconnectorblocktoconnectthefreeendtothe
extensioncable,takingparticularcaretoensurethecorrectpolarity.

length,current,andwiretables.Youmayalsotrimthepowercablesuppliedwith
theA65toreduceoverallwirelength.Onlyuseenoughwiretoconnecttheunitto
thepowersource,includingaserviceloop.
Note:
WhentheA65hasbeenpoweredoffusingthePWRkeybutisstillelectricallycon-
nectedtothepowersupply,theGPScontinuestodrawcurrent.
Thesuppliedpowercablehasacrosssectionof10mm.
CAUTION: CorrectPolarity
Ifthepowerconnectionsareaccidentallyreversedthesystem
willnotwork.Useamultimetertoensurethattheinputpower
leadsareconnectedforcorrectpolarity.

The5-pin,1.5m(5ft)NMEAinputcableissuppliedwithexposedwireconnecting
tails.TheseshouldbeconnectedtoyourexistingNMEAinstrumentsusing

Note:
*Ifyouintendtomountthereceiveronapole,youwillneedtoobtainasuitable
polewith1inch14TPIthread.
3.1 SelectingtheMountingLocation
TheRS12canbemountedonapoleorflushmountedonasuitablehorizontal
surface.
ReceiverLocation
TheRS12receiverisdesignedtoreceivethesignalsemittedfromsatellitesina
directpath.Itshouldbemounted:
• Onahorizontalsurface.
• Inalocationthatisopenandclearofanyobstructions(suchasmasts,search
lights,orotherstructures)thatcouldblockline-of-sightreceptionofsignals.
• Aslowaspossible:theheightofthereceiverisnotasimportantasithavinga
clearviewhorizontohorizonforoptimumsignalreception.Infact,thelower
theunitcanbemountedandhaveaclearviewtosatellites,thebetter.The
morestabletheunit,themoreeffectivelyitwilltracksatelliteslowtothehori-
zon.
Note:
DoNOTmountthereceiverupamast,asthereceiverwillswingwiththeboat,
leadingtosignificantCOG/SOGerrors.
• Asfaraspossiblefromanysourcesofinterference:thereceivershouldbesep-
aratedbyatleast1m(3ft)fromotherantennasandelectronicequipment.It
shouldnotbemountedinthedirectpathofaradar’sbeam.
Whenmountingthereceiverflushtoasurface:
• selectanareathatallowsaccesstotheundersideofthemountingsurface
• avoidareaswherethereceivermightbesteppedonortrippedover

CablingRoute
Whenplanningthelocationfortheunit,considerthebestrouteforrunningthe
cablebetweenthereceiverandGPSdisplayunitortotherestofanintegrated
system.Ideally,youshouldtrytoroutethecablesoit is:
• hiddenfromview
• separatedasfaraspossiblefromothercables(topreventinterference)
Whenrunningcable,alwaysobservethefollowingguidelines:
• ifacablehastobefedthroughthedeck,useagoodqualitydeckgrommet
• wherecablesarefedthroughholes,usegrommetstopreventchafing
• securelongcablerunssotheydonotpresentahazard
• whereverpossible,routecablesawayfromfluorescentlights,enginesand
radiotransmittingequipment,asthesemaycauseinterference
3.2 MountingtheReceiver
Whenyouhaveselectedasuitablelocation,followtheinstallationinstructions
for
PoleMounting or SurfaceMounting .
PoleMounting
Note: You will need to obtain a suitable pole with 1 inch 14 TPI thread.
1. Securelyattachthepolemountbasetoasuitablepoleorrailmountbracket.
2. Passthecablethrougheither:
A:thecenterholeofthepolemountbase,or
B:thesideexitchannel
Note:
Ifyouintendtousethesideexitchannel,removethetwoplastictabsobstructing
thechannel.Ifyoudonotremovethesetabsbeforeusingthecablechannel,youcould
damagethecable.
3. Checkthecableispositionedcorrectly,thensecurethereceivertothepole
mountbaseusingthetwoM4screwsprovided.
