3 Description of operation
The REA TD-GPT-U is a portable, battery operated industrial printer in a rugged glass-fibre plastic housing.
Due to the wide range of operating temperature (-10 - +60°C with specified paper), the printer can be used
outdoors.
Inserting the paper is easy due to Easy Paper Loading Technology. The paper supply cover closes securely
(tested in accordance with DIN EN60068-2-6 vibrations and -29 constant shock).
A convenient OnPaperDisplay menu (OPD-Menu®) allows an easy printer configuration. The printer is connected
to other devices by an USB interface.
Charging takes about 3 to 4 hours. The standard NiMH battery pack (1500mAh capacity) allows printing 5 paper
rolls without recharging.
Intelligent power management increases the printer availability. The printer switches automatically into sleep
mode to safe battery power. It can be waked up from sleep mode over the USB interface. In sleep mode, power
consumption is much lower than self-discharge of the battery.

4 Power supply
The battery pack includes 4 NiMH Mignon (AA) cells with 1,500 mAh. A temperature sensor monitors the battery
temperature during the charging process. A bimetal circuit-breaker is integrated to protect against short circuits
and overheating.
The battery is connected with a 7 pin connector through the window in the battery compartment. The battery
charging voltage is connected through the polarity protected socket. The plug-in power supply for charging is part
of the supplied set. It has a connection cable with the matching connector plug attached. A fully charged
1,500mAh battery will print up to app. 50 m of thermal paper with normal text.
Rechargeable batteries require at least 3 complete charging and discharging cycles in order to reach their full
capacity. Incomplete charging and discharging cycles during operation will reduce the lifetime of the battery.
Sleep Mode
The printer allows within the menu to set a timer. After the time has passed by, the printer switches into the sleep
mode. The printer is switched on again if data is sent, the power supply is attached or if the key FEED/Enter is
pressed. The printer keeps the configuration. The printer buffer is deleted.
It is possible to enable or to disable the sleep mode option by printer setup.
Power Off
If the OFF/NEXT key is pressed for 3 seconds or more the printer is switched off completely. The printer is
switched on if the FEED/ENTER key is pressed or if the power supply is connected to the printer.
Charging of the batteries
The printer incorporates an intelligent battery charging circuit. This circuit does not have a current limiter. The
current limitation is ensured by the supplied power supply. Another power supply with more power may therefore
destroy the printer.

The charging process has three steps:
Formatting charge
If the battery is totally discharged, it is charged at first with a low-current formatting charge in order to prevent
damage to the battery. The formatting charge is not indicated to the operator. Depending on the status of the
battery, the formatting process can take about 1 to 5 minutes.
Fast Charge
As soon as the battery voltage has exceeded the operating voltage of the printer, the printer will start a fast
charge. This is signalled through a slow flashing STATUS LED and a message through the interface.
If batteries are empty it takes about 4 hours to recharge them completely
Trickle Charge
If batteries are charged fully the charging circuit will change to the trickle charge mode to keep batteries fully
charged. In this mode, batteries are charged permanent with the low formatting current. In addition, fast charge is
activated every 8 minutes for 20 seconds. This is shown to the operator by switching the STATUS LED for this
time permanent on.
The REA TD-GPT-U printer meets the USB specification V1.1 for full-speed devices. The printer is compatible to
USB V2.0 bus systems.
Operation
If a sleep mode has been enabled, the printer will switch to sleep mode after the preset time has been passed.
The USB interface remains active and is directly powered by the USB master. A new print job reactivates the
printer without any loss of data. In USB suspend mode the printer internal USB interface is also disabled. In this
mode, the printer will "go to sleep" after the preset sleep time.

5 Paper change
The closed printer is protected against static discharges in accordance to the EMC guidelines. Since the user
may come in contact with electrically sensitive parts when the printer is open (like the print head during cleaning,
or the electronics during a battery exchange), the user should make sure that static charges are discharged
through sufficient grounding of the body before touching the printer (e.g. by touching grounded objects like
radiators) to avoid to damage the printer.
Replacing the Paper
Insert Paper
1. Unwind about 10 cm of paper from the
paper roll. Pull the lever of the paper
cover and open the compartment.
2. Put the paper roll in the paper
compartment. The paper outside must
show to the printer operating panel.
3. Close the cover by pressing softly. It
will snap into place. The paper can be cut
off at the tear-off edge. If the cover is
closed correctly the paper will not move,
if teared off and the cover will not be
opened if pulling at the paper. If
compartment opens and the paper
moves, the cover is closed incorrectly.
Which side of the thermal paper can be
printed on?
Usually, the printable side of a thermal
paper roll is on the outside.
See Error Detection and Recovery in
chapter 11.
Which thermal paper can be used?
The printer is specified for a paper
width of 57.5 ± 0.5 mm, a roll
diameter of 31 mm and a paper
weight of 60 g/m
2
. The matching
paper rolls (quality: 5 years) are
available from REA. Other papers
types may cause failures.
In principle the printer can also print
on self adhesive labels. For correct
label positioning a mark between the
labels is required.

7 Maintenance and cleaning
After a lot of printing or if using a low paper quality or under bad environmental conditions it is required to clean
the printer. Cleaning is required for the print head, the rubber drive roll and the paper sensor. Further if print
quality is getting bad the printer needs a cleaning.
8 Description of key functions
The keys will have depending on the printer status - normal operation or print settings menu - different meanings.
Depending of key pressing time different functions may released.
8.1 FEED / ENTER key
Pressing this key wakes the printer up from sleep mode or the paper can be moved forward.
When the feed key is pressed shortly, the printer feeds one line. If the key is pressed for more than 2 seconds
paper moves continuously until the key is released.
8.2 Self test
With a self test, the printer function is tested by starting a test print. The FEED ENTER key must be pressed and
hold while the printer is switched on. The software version and the character set are printed. The USB interface
cannot be checked by the self test.
• Open paper compartment and remove
paper
• Clean from paper roll, sensor and print
head carefully with a brush
• Blow in to paper compartment to
remove larger dust pieces (do not use
compressed air because oil drops may
destroy the printer)
• Use cotton sticks with isopropanol to
clean the thermal print head
• Remove other dirt also with a cotton

10 LED Status
LED "STATUS" (green)
The STATUS LED flashes slowly green if printer is ready and no fault is detected. It will flash red in regular
intervals in case of a fault. During fast charging, the STATUS LED will flash green in regular intervals, while it
permanently on (green) during trickle charge.
11 Error Detection and Recovery
If there is a problem with the printer it does not necessarily mean that the printer is faulty. Some problems can be
solved by the operator.
The following tips are intended to give the operator some assistance for this.
Hints for error recovery
Hardware-RESET: Triggered by holding down the OFF/NEXT key for more than 3 seconds.
This causes the printer to be set to the parameters in the batch file TINIT-F or TINIT-E (printer internal)
Test print: Is triggered by holding down the FEED key for more than 3 seconds after switching on (disable test
print with the OFF/NEXT key).
Hex dump mode: Is triggered by holding down the FEED key for more than 3 seconds after switching on while
no paper is inserted. After the paper has been inserted, the printer prints the data it receives as hexadecimal
digits together with the appropriate ASCII interpretation. This shows the complete binary data stream the printer
receives from the USB interface. To disable the hex dump mode the paper must be removed and the Feed key
has to be pressed for 3 seconds or longer. The printer reinitializes to the last settings.

Symptom Possible reason Action
The printer seems to be printing.
Paper is transported, but is not
blackened.
Paper: Incorrect side at the print
head. Only one side of the paper is
printable.
Insert paper correctly. The thermo
sensitive side is usually the roll
outer side.
Test: Move quickly with a fingernail
over the paper. The correct side
gets a black line caused by friction
heat.
Printer can not be switched on by
pressing the FEED key
No power, Batteries are empty
If starting to print the Status LED is
only shortly on and then off
The printer prints only a few
characters in one line. If a full line is
printed the printer stops.
The printer prints only a few dots
per line
Paper feed works but self test not
Power supply is not good. Batteries
are not charged well
Check power supply and charge
batteries. After at latest 1 minute
the Status LED shall be green.
Batteries have been charged over
night but printer prints only a few
lines or not at all.
The battery is used up or has been
charged incorrectly. If battery has
been totally discharged lifetime
goes down and capacity is lost.
Totally discharged batteries may
cause to abort charging within less
than 30 minutes (charging goes
into trickle charge). In this case the
power supply needs to be removed
to reinitiate charging. If printer is
not in use for a longer time it should
be switched off completely. If not
used longer than 3 months then
each three months the batteries
needs to be charged
Interface
Printout is incomplete The printer gets data faster than it
can print. The internal buffer can
buffer store 256 bytes. More data is
lost.
Check printer settings
Check printer driver settings
Interface trouble. Data transfer is
jammed.
Check cable and replace itThe printer prints incorrect
characters
Incorrect printer setup Correct printer setup
