Visual Status Indicators and Camera Aiming
The AED Sentinel camera keeps a watchful eye on your AEDs’ visual status indicators. An
AED’s status indicator visually communicates the current state of the device’s electronics
and changes if the status of an AED changes. On some devices, the status indicator also
communicates the status of the AED’s batteries and/or pads.
Every AED make and model has a status indicator, though the type varies by AED
manufacturer. Some use one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs), while others use liquid
crystal display (LCD) icons. AED Sentinel can monitor both status indicator types.
AED Sentinel uses a camera to monitor the status indicator on each of your AEDs. When
you install AED Sentinel hardware in your AED cabinets, make sure the AED Sentinel
camera is properly aimed at each AED’s status indicator.

Before You Begin
1. Register you AED Sentinel Manager account and set up all Locations. Before you
install AED Sentinel monitoring hardware, register your AED Sentinel Manager
account and set up all Locations, one for each of the AEDs being monitored. You
can do this at aedsentinel.com. You’ll need your AED Sentinel Subscriber ID and
Registration Code, available from your distributor, to set up your account.
2. Remove the AED from the cabinet. AED Sentinel monitoring hardware fits right
inside the cabinet. To make installation easier, be sure to remove the AED from the
cabinet first. Don’t forget to turn o the AED cabinet alarm if your cabinet has one.
Be sure to turn the alarm back on when you finish installation.
Install the AED Sentinel Monitoring Hardware
Follow these steps to install your AED Sentinel monitoring hardware:
Drill the antenna hole
To work properly, AED Sentinel needs to use the included external antenna to connect
to the cellular network.
Drill a 9/32”-inch (7.1mm) hole in the top of your AED cabinet to accommodate the cable
that connects the external antenna with the AED Sentinel communications module. The
antenna hole position should be 4 inches (10.2 cm) from the door-hinged side of the
cabinet and 2 ½” - 3 ½” (6.4–8.9 cm) from the cabinet back.
Install the antenna
1. Install the antenna cable. The antenna cable has an L-shaped connector and a straight
connector. On the straight connector you will find a nut and lock washer. Remove
the nut and lock washer but leave the flat washer in place. From inside the cabinet,
thread the straight connector through the antenna hole in the top of the cabinet. Then,
outside the cabinet, thread the lock washer onto the connector and screw on the nut
(1a). Firmly tighten the nut using a 5/16” (8 mm) wrench or a pair of pliers (1b). The
antenna cable is now hanging into the cabinet.
2. Attach the antenna (2a). Screw the antenna onto the straight connector coming out
of the cabinet. Hand-tighten it (2b).

Install the battery pack
1. Insert batteries. Make sure the battery pack is turned o. Slide the cover to remove
it and insert all the included batteries, taking care to position them as shown in the
battery compartment. Replace the cover.
2. Attach the battery pack to the cabinet. Magnetically attach the battery pack to the
door hinge side of the cabinet, midway between the top and bottom, with the power
switch and power cable facing up.
Install the communications module
1. Connect the ribbon cable to the
communications module. Find the
ribbon cable. Each end has a black
plastic connector. Find the connector
labeled END 2 and firmly connect
it into the rectangular port of the
communications module. The cable
will feed out toward the magnet side
of the communications module.
2. Connect the power cable. Plug the
battery pack power cable into the
communications module using the
round port next to the ribbon cable connector. Adjust the position of the battery pack,
if necessary.
3. Connect the antenna cable to the communications module. Screw the free end
L-connector of the antenna cable onto the threaded receptor on the communications
module. Make sure the connector aligns with the receptor so the prong in the middle
of the cable doesn’t bend. Point the antenna cable L-connector toward the inside of
the cabinet and hand-tighten it.
4. Attach the communications module to the cabinet. Magnetically attach the
communications module toward the top of the cabinet wall on the hinged side above
the battery pack. Make sure the round button and LED light are facing outward,
toward the cabinet door. Push the communications module toward the back wall of
the cabinet so you can see its LED light with the cabinet door closed.

Install the cable management clip
1. Attach the cable management clip. Peel the protective backing o one of the
included cable management clips (we’ve provided one extra). Attach it to the ceiling
of the cabinet midway between the hinged side of the cabinet and the antenna hole
with the open end facing front, toward the cabinet door.
2. Manage the cables. Catch the ribbon cable and antenna cable in the strap of the cable
management clip, then feed the strap through the clip latch. The clip should hold the
cables loosely – one or two holes from the end is enough. Move the communications
module up if you need more play in the ribbon cable.

Install the AED Sentinel Monitoring Hardware
Place the AED
Place the AED back in the cabinet with the status indicator at the top, facing out of the
cabinet. Be careful not to snag the AED Sentinel cables.
Install the camera
1. Confirm the camera’s position. Make sure the camera is mounted on the AED cabinet
door mounting system rails with the camera properly positioned to monitor your
AED’s status indicator.
2. Rotate the camera on the mounting system, if necessary. AED Sentinel’s camera
can be installed with the lens in a down or up position on the AED cabinet door
mounting system rails. When you first open the box, the lens is in the down
position. For the camera to work in the down position, your AED’s status indicator
must be 3 ½” (8.9 cm) or more from the top of the AED cabinet door. Depending
on the size of your AED and AED cabinet, you may need to flip the camera so it
properly captures your AED’s status indicator.
If the status indicator is less than 3 ½” from the top of the AED cabinet door,
flip the camera around. Slide the camera on its rails until it is centered midway
between the top and bottom mounting blocks.
Gently
pry the camera out of the
rails, turn it lens-side up, and snap it back onto the rails. Make sure the camera will
point inside the cabinet and not out through the cabinet window.
AED Sentinel works regardless of whether your camera lens is in the up or down
position. If the camera for this AED is flipped to the UP position, check the box
on the Add or Edit Monitored AED page in AED Sentinel Manager to ensure
monitoring images are displayed correctly.

3. Attach the camera/AED cabinet door mounting system to the cabinet door. The
AED cabinet door mounting system has magnets in the top and bottom mounting
blocks. Magnetically attach the camera to the inside of the cabinet door. In a smaller
AED cabinet, the camera’s mounting blocks will attach to the top and bottom of
the metal cabinet door frame. If you are working with a larger cabinet, the bottom
mounting block will rest against the inside of the cabinet window glass. In that case,
you will add the AED cabinet door mounting system window magnet included with
the hardware to the outside of the window, after your camera is properly aimed.
(Instructions for this step are located on page 14 of this installation guide.)
Aim the camera
For AED Sentinel to monitor your AED, the camera lens must be properly aimed at the
AED’s status indicator. The AED cabinet door mounting system allows the camera to be
positioned horizontally along the cabinet door and vertically along the rails.
1. Connect the ribbon cable to the camera. Firmly plug the free end of the ribbon cable
into the rectangular port on the camera. The cable will feed out in the direction of the
camera lens.
If you rotated the camera so
the lens is in the up position,
you will need to thread the
ribbon cable between the
camera and the rail instead of
using the cable management
hook.
Gently pry the camera out of
the hinged-side rail. Insert the
ribbon cable into the space
between the camera and
the rail, back to front. Snap
the rail back into place and
replug the ribbon cable.

2. Check the camera lens and AED position. Close the cabinet door and, through the
glass, view the three aiming notches on the back of the camera to check the position
of the camera lens in relation to the AED’s status indicator.
3. Aim horizontally. Viewing the status indicator at eye level, use the aiming notch at the
bottom of the camera to check whether the camera lens points at the center of the
status indicator. If it doesn’t, open the door and, using the left and right sides of the
top mounting block (NOT the camera or rails), adjust the mounting system along the
cabinet door or move the AED left or right. Close the door and check the position
again. Repeat until the aiming notch aligns horizontally with the center of the
status indicator.

4. Aim vertically. Viewing the status indicator at eye level, use the aiming notches at
the sides of the camera to check whether the camera lens points at the center of the
status indicator. If it doesn’t, open the door and slide the camera up or down on the
rails to adjust its position. Close the door and check the position again. Repeat until
the aiming notches align vertically with the center of the status indicator.
If you can’t properly aim the camera because your AED’s
status indicator is too high in the cabinet, flip the camera
on the mounting system rails. If you’re not sure how, see
Install the camera on page 8 of this installation guide.
If you have trouble aiming the camera because you have a
small AED in a large cabinet, try moving the AED toward the
door hinge side of the cabinet. Alternatively, you can place
the AED on an AED riser available from your distributor.

5. Insert ribbon cable into the cable management hook. The top mounting block of the
AED cabinet door mounting system has two cable management hooks to help ensure
the ribbon cable doesn’t hinder AED retrieval or obstruct the camera lens.
Choose the hook on the side closest to the cabinet door hinge. Gently fold the ribbon
cable in half lengthwise, then insert the two unfolded edges into the space between
the cable management hook. Press the folded edge and flatten the cable into the
space between the hook arms. You may need to nudge the cable up or down to help
it flatten.
If you rotated the camera to the up position, skip this step.
6. Check the cables. When you’re done aiming the camera, close the door and double
check that no cables obstruct the camera lens or hinders removal of the AED from
the cabinet. Also make sure the ribbon cable is not snagging or being pinched in the
cabinet door frame. Gently reposition the ribbon cable if needed.
Activate the AED Sentinel Monitoring Unit
Follow these steps to activate your AED Sentinel monitoring unit:
1. Add your AED to AED Sentinel Manager. Log in to your AED Sentinel Manager
account, go to the Monitored AEDs page and click Add Monitored AED. On the Add

Alternating red and green blink: The AED Sentinel monitoring unit is capturing and
sending an image. This will take about 30-60 seconds.
Then either …
Blinking green: The AED Sentinel monitoring unit has captured an image and
successfully transmitted it to AED Sentinel Manager. The light will continue to blink for
about 1 minute.
OR
Blinking red: The AED Sentinel monitoring unit either couldn’t capture an image or
couldn’t transmit it. See Troubleshooting below. The light will continue to blink for
about 1 minute.
Then …
Solid green: The AED Sentinel monitoring unit is completing its activation sequence.
The solid green light will stay on for the remainder of the 3-minute AED Sentinel
activation period.

4. Check the image and AED status. Use your mobile device or computer to log into
your AED Sentinel Manager account and navigate to the Monitored AED associated
with the AED Sentinel monitoring unit you are installing (based on the monitoring
unit’s Sentinel ID). Confirm the image the AED Sentinel monitoring unit just captured
displays the AED’s status indicator in the center of the picture and is not obstructed
in any way. Also confirm the AED’s status shows “Ready” in AED Sentinel Manager. If
needed, readjust the camera, AED or cables, turn the battery pack o and then on,
and press the button on the communications module again. Repeat the activation
process until you capture an image with the AED’s status indicator in the center and
the AED status shows “Ready.”
5. If needed, ax the AED cabinet door mounting system window plate. Check that
the small magnet on the bottom of the camera’s mounting system magnetically
attaches to the inside bottom of the cabinet door. If it touches only the glass, peel the
protective backing o of the included window magnet (4a) and adhesively attach the
plate to the outside of the cabinet window opposite the bottom mounting block (4b).
This will magnetically secure the bottom mounting block to the inside of the cabinet
window.
6. Ax cabinet sticker. Now that you have successfully installed the AED Sentinel
monitoring unit, ax the cabinet sticker to the front of your AED cabinet letting
everyone know AED Sentinel is on watch.
