4. TECHNICAL DATA
4.1 General
TheRD-pump is dredgingpump, speciallydesignedfor
transportof highlyabrasivesolids.
Apartfrom dredging, thepump can beused inmining,
construction works and industry.
Theimpellerleaves awideunobstructed passagethrough
the volute, in which a strong vortex is created that carries
most of the solids.
Construction:
- High efficiency motor, standard class F
insulation(up to155oC).
- Two independentmechanicalseals, runningin oil,
formaneffectivebarrierbetween pumpandmotor.
- Heavyduty bearings, greasedfor life.
- Clog-freevorteximpeller.
- Agitator, to feed the impeller with solids.
- All hydraulic components in Nihard 4.
- Vanesat the backsideprevent solidsentering the
seal area and reduce the pressure on the seal.

5. FIRST PUMSTART
After unpacking the pump, carry out the following check
points:
5.1 Delivery-check
Checkfor possibletransport damageand especially
check that the cable has not been nicked or damaged.
Check forcomplete delivery.
Whenthe deliveryis incompleteor damaged,please
contactyourdealer immediately.
5.2 Oillevel
Check the oil level. (see 7.5)
5.3 Power supply
Before making the electrical connections, check if
theline voltage andfrequency arethe same ason the
pumpdataplate.
If thermostats are supplied make sure that they are
correctlyconnected.
Forexamples ofelectrical diagramsand pump
cable coding, see appendix 2 and 3.
5.4 Thermoswitches
Check if the pump is equipped with thermoswitches
(optionalforRD20 and RD40,standardfor RD60-series).
Contactrating:max. 250V-1.6A
The contacts are normally closed.
5.5 Cable entry
Especially when the pump has been in store for a
long time, the cable gland should be checked and
ifnecessary tightened(see 7.4).
5.6 Motor protection
The pump should always be connected to the line by
meansof asuitable motor protection circuitbreaker.
If the pump is started direct on line (DOL), the protection
breaker should be set to the current, as given on the
dataplate.
For star delta start (YD), it is good practice to install the
overcurrentrelay directlyafter themain contactor. In this
case, the pump is also adequately protected in star-
connection.

5.7 Motor check
If in doubt about the condition of the motor or cable,
Meggertest motorwindings againstgrounding wire.
Thephase resistanceagainst groundingwireshould beat
least 1 MOhm.
Turn the impeller counter-clockwiseby hand (see fig.5.1).
Forversions withoutagitator, usea propersocket wrench.
Thisshould bepossible without much force.
With this procedure sticking mechanical seal
surfaceswill be loosenedsmoothly.
5.8 Installation parts
Check if all components for your installation
aredelivered. Seealsochapter 6.
5.9 Direction of rotation
Acorrect directionof rotationis essentialfor proper
operation. This can be checked as follows:
- Put the pump in horizontal position and start the
pump.
Lookingon theimpeller throughthe suction
opening,the correct directionof rotation is
counter-clockwise
(Seearrow onpumpcasing, Fig.5.2).
or:
- Starting the pump will give a recoil on the
pumpframe.
Looking at the motor (in vertical position see
Fig. 5.3), the recoil is counter-clockwise.
Take care!
Therecoilcan beverypowerful !
Don’tgo nearrotating parts!
5.10 Current-check
Note the max. current from the dataplate.
Apply an ammeter to one of the phase wires
duringnormal operation.Check thatthecurrent
isnot higher thanthe value on the dataplate.
(see appendix 1). If so check for:
- voltage(toolow ?)
- specificgravity or viscosityof the fluid
(toohigh ?)
- blockedimpeller ?
- directionof rotationcorrect ?
Ifthe problemcannot besolved contactyourdealer.

Whenthe mediumtemperature ishigher than40oC, the
maximummotorload mustbe reduced.
Therelationshipbetween medium temperatureand
maximumabsorbed motorcurrent isshown below. Check
thereading ofthe dataplateagainst thereading of an
Ammeter.
Ifthe motorcurrent exceedsthe max. motorcurrent from
the table below the pump is not suitable or the
motorcurrentmust bereduced.

5.12 Start frequency
When the pump is controlled by level regulators, the on
and off levels should be adjusted in such a way, that the
pump does not do more than 20 starts per hour.
5.13 Min. and max. submersion depth
Themotorhousing shouldbe at least2/3 submergedfor
continuousoperation at fullload. (see Hmin.1 Fig. 5.4)
It is good practice, whenever possible to keep the
motorhousingcompletelyunder water.
Forinterrupted levelcontrolled operation,lesscooling is
required. We recommend not to run the pump with the
waterlevel belowthe top ofthe volutein ordertoavoid air
beingdrawn in(see Hmin.2Fig. 5.4).
Airin thedischarge pipesmight impairperformance.
The maximum submersion depth is 20m / 60ft.

6.1 INSTALLATION - H
Stationary wet installationwith aROBOTquick-release
headercoupling typeHK.
Aflexible hoseconnects pumpand coupling.
RD20 pumps will have a vertical position, see Fig. 6.1.All
other RD pumps are horizontally placed, see Fig. 6.2.
Exceptfor thepump thefollowing componentsare
necessary:
1. Hose connection, which is fastened to the
pump;
2. Flexiblehose,between pumpand coupling;
3. Headercoupling,consisting ofcoupling
bend,rubber jointand afixed couplingpart;
4. Suspensionbracket andchain, forlifting thepump;
5. Levelregulatorsfor start-,stop- and alarm-
signals;
6. Suspensionforlevel regulators andpower
supply cable;
7. Piping,nonreturn valve,bends etc.
Checkpointsbeforeoperating:
- Ensurea good freepassage beneath
thesuction openingof thepump
(at least the same as the suction diameter).
- Adjust the start- and stop levels in such a
way that the motor does not make more
than 20 starts per hour .
- Check that the motor is adequately cooled.
Themotorhousing shouldbe atleast 2/3 submerged
forcontinuous operationat fullload (see Hmin.1
Fig. 6.1).

Stationary wet installationwith a ROBOTquick-release
guide bar coupling type -V. The pump is automatically
coupledto thedischarge.
Exceptfor thepump thefollowing componentsare
necessary:
1. Bottomelbow, rubberjoint andcoupling
adapter;
2. Guidebarfoundation plate;
3. Twoguidebars
4. Top bracket,mountedwithin thewellcover
clearance;
5. Levelregulatorsfor start-,stop- and alarm-
signals;
6. Suspensionforlevel regulators andpower
supply cables;
7. Piping,nonreturn valve,discharge bends etc.
Checkpointsbeforeoperating:
- Both guide bars must stand vertical
(maximumtolerance 3o).
- Theinstallation anglemust be about10-15o
(see Fig. 6.4). If necessary, this angle can be
changedby alteration ofthe position of the
lifting hook on the suspension bracket on top
of the motor (pos. 1).
- Adjust the start- and stoplevels in such a
way that the motor does not make more
than 20 starts per hour.
- Check that the motor is adequately cooled.
Themotorhousing shouldbe atleast 2/3 submerged
forcontinuous operationat fullload (see Hmin.1
Fig. 6.3).
It is good practice, whenever possible to keep the

6.3 Checkpoint installation - V
In some applications it is possible that the pump will not
workdue to presenceof airin the volute.
Liftingthe pumpa bit (10-20mm)while runningmay solve
theproblem.
Whenthe problemrepeats,an air-ventholecan bedrilled
in the coupling adapter and a special gasket must be
fitted. (see fig. 6.5).
When air is present, this will escape through the hole.
When the fluid arrives, the special gasket will close the
hole.
- Takepart(1)(fig.6.6).
- Drill a 8mm hole in the cast boss on top
ofthe coupling adapter.
- Deburrthehole.
- Place a special gasket (3) (Fig. 6.7)
- Mountthe couplingadapter (1)to the
pump(2).

Fig. 6.9).
It is good practice, whenever possible to keep the

7. MAINTENANCE
7.1 General
Always disconnect the pump from the
mainsbefore inspectionor disassembly.
Cleanthe pump thoroughly.
Themotor housingcan behot whenthe
pump is just switched off.
7.2 Maintenance schedule
* Afterthe first20 runninghours:
- Check the oil (see chapter 7.5).
Ifthere ismore thana few drops of water
in it, contact your dealer.
* Every6 monthsor 500 runninghours:
- Check the oil (see chapter 7.5).
If there is more than a few cm3 water in it,
contactyour dealer.
- Refresh the oil every year or when it is no
longertransparent. (See chapter7.6)
7.3 Lubricants
* Thebearingsare greasedforlife and need
norefill.
* Theoil reservoiris filledwith ExxonMobilMarcol 152
Viscosity: 32 cSt.
When another kind of oil is used this is
marked on a label on the pump.
Oil quantities:
RD20: 0,6 L.
RD40: 1,5 L.
RD60: 2,4 L.

7.4 Cable entry
Especially when the pump has been in use for a long
time, the compression of the rubber cable seal might be
deminished,which can causeleakage. Byscrewing-in
the cable entry the seal will be retentioned.
7.4.1 RD 20
Turnthe hexagonhead ofthe entry(1) for 1/6 of a turn
clockwise using the right tool.
It is possible that your cable entry is
fitted with a cable clamp.
See 7.4.2.
7.4.2 RD 40
Unscrew the 2 hexagon socket screws (1).
Removethe cableclamp(2).
Turnthe hexagon head of theentry (1)clockwise, using
the right tool, so far that it is possible to replace the cable
clampagain.
Screw-in the 2 hexagon socket screws (1).
It is possible that your pump is fitted
with 2 cables.
7.4.3 RD 60
Unscrew the 4 hexagon socket screws (1) from
theouter cable entries.
Removethe cableclamps (2).
Turnthe hexagon headsof theentry clockwise,
using the right tool, so far that it is possible to
replace the cable clamps again.
Screw-in the 4 hexagon socket screws (1).
Turnthe hexagonhead ofthe middleentry (3)for 1/6of a
turn clockwise.
It is possible that your pump is fitted
with only 2 cables.

7.5.1 RD 20
Put the pump in a horizontal position so that the 2
hexagonal socket screws are on top (see fig.7.4).
Unscrewthe levelplug (1) andthe ventplug (2).
The oil level should be at the lower side of the openings
(seedrawing).
By turning the pump a bit this should be visible.
If not so fill up to the right level.
Always use the right kind of oil !
It is possible that your pump is fitted
with 3 plugs.
For oil check see 7.5.2
7.5.2 RD 40
Put the pump in a horizontal position so that 2
hexagonal socket screws are on top and one at
thebottom (seefig.7.5).
Unscrewthe levelplug (1) andthe ventplug (2).
The oil level should be at the lower side of the openings
(see drawing). By turning the pump a bit this should be
visible.
If not so fill up to the right level.
Always use the right kind of oil !
7.5.3 RD 60
Put the pump in a vertical position.
Unscrew the M20 oil pug (1) which can be found at the
opposite side of the cable entry box
(seefig. 7.6).
The oil level should be at the lower side of the opening.
If not so fill up to the right level.
Always use the right kind of oil !
Ensure that the pump is fully supported
to preventitfrom fallingover !

7.6 Oil change
Collection, storageand removal ofthe
oil should be done according to the
regulations of the local authorities.
When necessary replace the sealing rings.
Always use the right kind of oil !
(see chapter 7.3).
7.6.1 RD 20
Put the pump in a horizontal position so that one of oil
plugs is at the bottom ( fig.7.7 position B).
Removetheventplug (2).
Puta receivingbinunderneath thedrain plug(1).
Removethe plugand drain theoil.
Rotate the pump so that the 2 openings are on top
(fig.7.7position C).
Refillthe oilhousing.
Theoil level shouldbe atthe lower sideof theopenings.
(fig.7.7positionA).
Replacethe plugs.
7.6.2 RD 40
Put the pump in a horizontal position so that the drain
plug (3) is at the bottom (Fig.7.8 positionA).
Removethevent plugs(1)and (2).
Puta receivingbinunderneath thedrain plug.
Removethe plugand drain theoil.
Replacethe drainplug.
Refillthe oilhousing.
Theoil levelshould be at the lowerside ofthe openings
(Fig.7.8positionA).
Replacethe plugs.
7.6.3 RD 60
Put the pump in a horizontal position so that the drain
plug (M20) is at the bottom (Fig.7.9 pos.A).
Removethevent plugs(1)and (2).
Puta receivingbinunderneath thedrain plug.
Removethe plugand drain theoil.
Replacethe drainplug(3).

7.7.1 RD 20
Unscrewthe inspectionplug ofthe motorhousing(see
Fig. 7.10 pos 1).
Put the pump in horizontal position with the inspection
openingdownwards.
If water is present this will come out this way.
Asmall amount of water, due to condensation, is
permissable.
Morewater isan indicationof leakageof
the construction. Oil is an indication of
sealfailure between motorhousingand oil
chamber.
If so, contact your dealer.
7.7.2 RD 40
Installation-H,-V:
Unscrewthe inspectionplug ofthe motorhousing(see
Fig. 7.11 pos 1).
Installation-F,-T:
Placethe pump ina vertical positionand removethe 4
hexagonalsocket screwsof themotorhousing.
Lift the pump very carefully a few cm’s, see fig. 7.11.
If water is present this will come out this way.

entry box and pull the cable entry box a few cm’s from
thepump.
If water is present this will come out this way.

8. TRANSPORT AND STORAGE
Thepump canbe transportedand storedin both
horizontaland vertical position.
Neverlift thepump bythe motorcableor
dischargehose!
Always use the suspension bracket !
In case of long storage, the pump must be protected
againstmoisture andheat.
Before storing the pump clean it with a waterjet and
checkthe motorhousing for water ingress (see chapter
7.7) .
Ona regularbase (everythree months), turnthe
impeller by hand, this is necessary to prevent
sticking of the mechanical seal surfaces (see Fig. 8.1).
After 6 months of storage, a general inspection is
advised,before installing thepump.

9. OPTIONS
9.1 Waterdetector
As a safeguard against water ingress into the motor, the
pumpcan beequipped with awaterdetector.
When your pump is equipped with a waterdetector, this
canbe foundon thedataplate.
See appendix 1: at position 24 a “W” is stamped.
Thewaterdetector detects waterwhich mighthave
enteredthe oilhousingor motorhousing dueto sealfailure
orcable damage.
Thewaterdetector causesthe pumpto switch off,
beforedamage tothe motoris done.
Theprobe itselfis anon-active electrode,placed inoil and
motorhousing. It is used in conjuction with a relay in the
control circuit that measures the resistance between
probeandframe.
If only air or oil is present, the resistance is over
5000 Ohm. If water enters, the resistance will
decrease to as low as 300 to 500 Ohm
We advise to use OMRON relay 61 F-GP
oranequivalent.
This relay switches at 5000 ohm.
Nowater present:
- highresistance betweenterminals 1and 7
(>5000Ohm)
- terminals 2 and 4 closed
- terminals3 and 4open
Waterpresent:
- lowresistance between terminals 1 and7
(300-500Ohm)
- terminals2 and 4open
- terminals 3 and 4 closed
9.2 Thermoswitches
Thermoswitchesare standard forthe RD60 pumpsand
optionalfor the RD20andRD40.
When your pump is equipped with thermoswitches, a “T”
is stamped at position 24 on the dataplate. (see appendix
1).Acopy of your dataplate is on page 2.

9.3 Thermistors
Insteadof thermoswitches,the pumpcan be equipped
withthermistors (onspecial request).
This will be marked with a “U” on the dataplate at
position 24 .
Normallythe resistanceis about200-500 Ohm.
Whenthe switch-offtemperature isreached the
resistancewill bebetween1650-4000 Ohm.
Themaximum voltageis 7.5V.
A thermistor is not a circuit breaker but a
resistance.

9.4 Cable protection
Whenchemical ormechanical protectionfor the
cable is needed a tube can be fitted around the
cable (Fig. 9.2 pos 1).
This is a flexible stainless steel tube (1) connected to a
special cable entry (Fig.9.2 pos 2).
When your pump is equipped with a cable protection, a
“3” is stamped on the dataplate at position 24.

9.5 Special oil
Upon request the oil housing can be filled with
a special oil. If so, a label on the pump shows which kind
of oil is used.
9.6 External cooling system
As an option the pump could be obtained with a external
cooling system. In this case a motorhousing with cooling
jacket is installed.At least 20 l/min water with a
maximumtemperature of40oC andabout1 barpressure
is circulated through the cooling jacket.
For this purpose two 1/2" connections are supplied on the
bearinghousing.
Theright-hand siteis theinlet opening.
Thecooling systemis self-venting,providing that inand
outletare notexchanged.
Thecooling flow isonly required whilethe pump is
running.
Ifthe coolingwater temperature exceeds45oC theamount
ofcooling water should be establishedon site.The
differencebetween in andoutlet temperature shouldbe
less than 10oC.
Themaximum mediumtemperatureshould notexceed
80oC.
Alternativelythe pumpcould beorderedin aversion that
discharges the cooling water through the pump. With this
arrangement,the mechanicalseal andthe backsideof
theimpeller arekept clearfrom dirtcontaminations. The
requiredcooling waterpressurevaries withpumptype and
operating conditions. It will not exceed the suction
pressureplus 2/3of themanometric pumphead.
