ROCBIT 2
INTRODUCTION:
The Rocsecure Rocbit 2 external pocket mobile hard
drives are industry’s most versatile, real-time hardware
encrypted storage solution available. Rocbit 2 USB2.0
and FireWire Combo interface drives offer security-
sensitive users a wide range of NIST certified DES (Data
Encryption Standard) and TDES (Triple DES) encrypted
algorithms. Rocbit 2.5” ultra-slim drives are designed
with DES/TDES 40/64/128 or 192-bit real-time hardware
data encryption security performance which effectively
intercept, interpret, translate and relay IDE data
commands to and from disk drives in “real-time”.
Rocsecure drives offer the technologies you need to keep
you data secure and safe.
KEY FEATUES:
•Delivers “Real-Time” performance over software
encryption
•Secured with DES/TDES, 40/64/128 or 192 bit
HARDWARE encryption
•Keeps data-at-rest confidential by preventing
unauthorized access
•Anti-shock protection enclosures
•Delivers significant performance improvement over
software encryption
•Eliminates platform dependency
•Minimizes total cost of ownership (TCO)
•Requires no additional training

3
FEATURES:
•Supports Hi-Speed USB data transfer speed of up to
480Mbps, and IEEE 1394a data transfer speed of
up to 400Mbps.
•USB Mass Storage Class offers driverless in Windows
XP, 2000, and ME.
•Easy to connect by plug-n-play.

The designs with 64/128/192-bit encryptions are available by request.
What is Encryption?
Data encryption is a process used to hide the true
meaning of data. The word "encryption' has been coined
from the word "cryptography" which was derived from the
ancient Greek words "kryptos" (hidden) and "graphia"
(writing). Encryption is the sophisticated mathematical
calculation (or algorithm) process of transforming text or
data into an unintelligible form called cipher. Reversing
the process of encryption and transforming the cipher
back into its original form is called decryption.
Encryption and decryption comprise the science of
cryptography as it is applied to the modern computer.
What is an Encrypted Hard Drive Enclosure?
Rocbit Encrypted HD enclosures provide Enova X-Wall®
real-time hardware-based encryption. Every bit and byte
on the hard drive is strongly encrypted by DES (Data
4
Encryption Standard) or TDES (Triple DES) algorithms.
There is no possibility that clear text will remain on the
hard drive.
What is the Secure Key and Why Use It?
The Secure Key is a physical digital key that contains the
“Secret Key” (number) necessary for encryption and
decryption operations. The hard drive must be partitioned
and formatted using the Secure Key, the first time the
hard drive is used. When complete the entire content of
the hard drive is associated with the unique Secure Key.
Only a Secure Key containing the identical “Secret Key”
can be used for authentication and decryption of the hard
drive at power up.
Will Encryption Degrade Performance?
Rocbit encrypted hard drives provide Real-Time and
automatic TRANSPARENT ENCRIPTION without
performance degradation through the built-in X-Wall®
microchip (encryption chipset), which operates at 1.6
Gbit/sec.
What about Compatibility Issues?
Rocbit encrypted hard drives are compatible with every
operating system found today. However, a host controller
with a USB/1394 mass storage driver typically provided
by the OS is required.
How do Rugged Rocbit Designs help protect your Hard
Drive?
In addition to strong real-time encryption and the Secure
Key, the safety-centric mechanical designs of Rocbit
external hard drives provide critical hardware protection.

Before Installation
You will be required to partition and format the new hard
drive before use. Always perform partition and format
functions with the secure key plugged in; otherwise the
hard drive cannot be encrypted. After formatting the hard
drive the secure key can be safely removed and the
enclosure will operate normally. Performing partition and
format operations will erase all the data on the disk.
ROCSTOR (ROCSECURE) IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR
ANY LOST DATA.
After Installation
1) Since the IEEE 1394 bus powers the IEEE 1394(b)/
USB 2.0 enclosure; the secure key must be inserted
before the IEEE 1394(b) connector. If the secure key is
not inserted first, the host computer may not recognize
the enclosure.
Similarly, the secure key must first be inserted in the
encrypted USB 2.0 enclosure with USB Y-cable.
2) Plug in the secure key every time you connect the
HDD enclosure to the host.
You may remove the secure key after the host computer
has detected the Rocbit 2.
3) Always keep the secure key with you. You will be
required to insert the secure key when you power on your
Rocbit encrypted Hard Drive enclosure. Without the same
secure key, the host is not able to detect the Rocbit hard
drive when powered on. Once you have accessed your
hard drive the secure key may be removed. The hard
drive can then be accessed without the secure key as
long as the Rocbit encrypted hard drive is powered on.
8
4) The host cannot access the HDD when the enclosure
LED indicator is red. A red LED indicator means no key is
inserted. If the LED indicator is red you must completely
power off the encrypted enclosure, insert the secure key,
then power on the enclosure again.

Encrypted Models
1) Insert the secure key into the security key port
indicated by the secure key icon “ “ on the rear
panel of the Enclosure Kit. As the shape of the security
key port is very similar to the shape of the IEEE 1394
port, ensure that the secure key is inserted only into the
security key port. Incorrect insertion into a port other
than the designated security key port may result in
damage to the secure key or other ports/equipment.
2) Connect the AC/DC power adapter; ensure that the
green LED indicator is active. The orange LED indicator
will blink during data transfer.

11
3) Insert one end of the USB or IEEE 1394(b) connector
into a corresponding port on the enclosure.
4) Insert the USB or IEEE 1394(b) connector into an
available port on the computer.
Note: If the LED indicator is red, security is not enabled.
Ensure that the secure key is inserted before power on,
and the enclosure is properly connected.
Using the USB Y-cable:
The USB Y-cable provides 2 USB type-A connectors and
1 USB mini-B connector. The 2 USB type-A connectors
are inserted into two available USB ports on the
computer. The USB Y-cable serves as both power supply
and data transfer cable. The cable with square type-A
connector supplies power and transfers data between the
enclosure and the host computer. The remaining type-A
12
connector provides additional power from the host
computer to the enclosure. The remaining USB mini-B
connector is inserted into the port on the rear panel of
the enclosure.
square type-A connector of the USB Y-cable into the host.
This will enable data transfer between the enclosure and
the computer. The remaining USB type-A connector will
be idle.
Do NOT insert the remaining type-A connector into the
host.
