1 Documentation Overview
This section provides an overview of the R&S IQW user documentation. Unless
specified otherwise, you find the documents on the R&S IQW product page at:

1.1 Getting Started Manual
Introduces the R&S IQW and describes how to setup and start working with the
product. Includes basic operations, typical measurement examples, and general
information, e.g. safety instructions, etc. A printed version is delivered with the
instrument.
1.2 User Manuals and Help
Contains the description of all instrument modes and functions. It also provides
an introduction to remote control, a complete description of the remote control
commands with programming examples, and information on maintenance, instru-
ment interfaces and error messages. Includes the contents of the Getting Started
manual .
1.3 Basic Safety Instructions
Contains safety instructions, operating conditions and further important informa-
tion. The printed document is delivered with the instrument.
1.4 Specifications and Brochures
The specification contains the technical specifications of the R&S IQW. It also
lists the firmware applications and their order numbers, and optional accessories.

The R&S IQW I/Q wideband recorder is a flexible medium for fast and reliable
recording, storage and playback of broadband I/Q data streams in real time. The
recording of real RF scenarios offers the user the possibility to carry out tests in
the laboratory under real conditions.
Use the R&S IQW only for its designated purpose. Observe the safety and usage
instructions documented in the user manual, as well as operating conditions and
performance limits stated in the specifications.
The product documentation helps you to use the R&S IQW safely and efficiently.
Keep the product documentation in a safe place and pass it on to the subsequent
users.
Safety information is part of the product documentation. It warns you about the
potential dangers and gives instructions how to prevent personal injury or dam-
age caused by dangerous situations. Safety information is provided as follows:
●In the "Basic Safety Instructions", safety issues are grouped according to sub-
jects. For example, one subject is electrical safety. The "Basic Safety Instruc-
tions" are delivered with the R&S IQW in different languages in print.
●Throughout the documentation, safety instructions are provided when you
need to take care during setup or operation. Always read the safety instruc-
tions carefully. Make sure to comply fully with them. Do not take risks and do
not underestimate the potential danger of small details such as a damaged
power cable.

3 Key Features
The R&S IQW is a high-speed data recorder for recording and replaying digital
I/Q data streams. Together with Rohde & Schwarz devices with an R&S Digtial
I/Q interface (R&S FSW, R&S SMW200A), a real-time data recording and replay
is possible.
The R&S IQW sets standards in performance and usability. Outstanding key fea-
tures are:
●Real-time recording and replay of digital I/Q data up to 512 MHz bandwidth in
a flexible frequency range
●Accurate data acquisition with a sample rate up to 640 MSamples/s and 16-bit
I/Q data
●Optional import and export of I/Q data via Ethernet or USB
●Smart responsive user interface based on wizards allows for easy use
●R&S IQW base unit can be enhanced with several SW options
●Optional recording of GPS coordinates

4 Preparing for Use
Risk of injury due to disregarding safety information
Observe the information on appropriate operating conditions provided in the
data sheet to prevent personal injury or damage to the instrument. Read
and observe the basic safety instructions provided with the instrument, in
addition to the safety instructions in the following sections. In particular:
●Do not use an isolating transformer to connect the instrument to the AC
power supply.
●Do not open the instrument casing.
Risk of instrument damage due to inappropriate operating conditions
An unsuitable operating site or test setup can damage the instrument and
connected devices. Before switching on the instrument, observe the infor-
mation on appropriate operating conditions provided in the data sheet. In
particular, ensure the following:
●All fan openings are unobstructed and the airflow perforations are unim-
peded. The minimum distance from the wall is 10 cm.
●The instrument is dry and shows no sign of condensation.
●The instrument is positioned as described in the following sections.
●The ambient temperature does not exceed the range specified in the
data sheet.
●Signal levels at the input connectors are all within the specified ranges.
●Signal outputs are connected correctly and are not overloaded.

4.1 Unpacking the Instrument
Check the equipment for completeness using the delivery note and the accessory
lists for the various items. If you notice any damage, immediately contact the car-
rier who delivered the instrument.
Packing material
Retain the original packing material. If the instrument needs to be transpor-
ted or shipped later, you can use the material to protect the control ele-
ments and connectors.
Risk of instrument damage during transportation and shipment
Insufficient protection against mechanical and electrostatic effects during
transportation and shipment can damage the instrument.
●Always make sure that sufficient mechanical and electrostatic protection
is provided.
●When shipping an instrument, use the original packaging. If it is not
available, allow for sufficient padding to prevent the instrument from
moving around inside the box. Pack the instrument in antistatic wrap to
protect it from electrostatic charging.
●Secure the instrument to prevent any movement and other mechanical
effects during transportation.
The carrying handles are designed to lift or carry the instrument. Do not
apply excessive external force to the handles.
4.2 EMI Suppression
To suppress generated Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), operate the instru-
ment only while it is closed, with all shielding covers fitted. Note the EMC classifi-
cation in the specifications.

Use appropriate shielded cables to ensure successful control of electromagnetic
radiation during operation, especially for the following connector types:
●Output connectors for reference signals (rear panel, REF IN / OUT): Use dou-
ble-shielded RF cables and terminate open cable ends with 50 Ω.
●USB: Use double-shielded USB cables and ensure that external USB devices
comply with EMC regulations.
●LAN: Use CAT6 or CAT7 cables.
Observe the additional connector, cable, and cable length requirements in Chap-
ter 5.1, "Front Panel Description", on page 15 and Chapter 5.2, "Rear Panel
Description", on page 17.
4.3 Connecting a Power Supply
The I/Q Wideband Recorder is automatically adapted to the AC supply voltage.
The supply voltage must be in the range 100 V to 240 V; 50 Hz to 60 Hz. The
mains connector and power switch are located at the rear panel.
Connect the I/Q Wideband Recorder to the AC power source using the AC power
cable delivered with the unit. The maximum and typical power consumption of the
I/Q Wideband Recorder is listed in the specifications.
4.4 Connecting External Devices
The equivalent USB ports on the front and rear panel of the R&S IQW can be
used to connect various accessories:
●A mouse simplifies operation of the instrument using the controls and dialogs
of the Graphical User Interface (GUI).
●A keyboard simplifies the entry of data.
A LAN connection can be established to access the hard disk or control the tester
from an external PC.

4.4.1 Connecting a Mouse
A USB mouse can be connected to one of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) con-
nectors on the front panel or on the rear panel.
The mouse is detected automatically when it is connected. It is safe to connect or
disconnect the mouse while the R&S IQW is in idle state.
Risk of data loss
Do not connect or disconnect the mouse while data is being recorded or
replayed.
4.4.2 Connecting a Keyboard
A keyboard can be connected to one of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) connec-
tors on the front panel or on the rear panel.
The keyboard is detected automatically when it is connected. The default input
language is English - US. It is safe to connect or disconnect the external key-
board while the R&S IQW is in idle state.
Risk of data loss
Do not connect or disconnect the keyboard while data is being recorded or
replayed.
4.4.3 Connecting a LAN Cable
Connect a CAT6 or CAT7 RJ-45 (LAN, Ethernet) cable to the LAN port on the
rear panel of the R&S IQW. See also Chapter 4.2, "EMI Suppression",
on page 10.

Direct Ethernet connection
The LAN port of the R&S IQW is an auto-crossover Ethernet port. You can
connect it to a network that is equipped with Ethernet hardware (hub,
switch, router), but you can also setup a direct connection to a computer or
another test instrument. For both connection types, you can use either
crossover or standard straight-through Ethernet cables.
4.5 Replacing a Memory Pack
To replace a memory pack, following steps must be performed.
Risk of data loss
Switch off the R&S IQW, before removing the memory pack.
1. Unlock the key of the memory pack. It must be in vertical position.

2. Pull the blue lever forwards.

5.1 Front Panel Description
The front panel of the I/Q Wideband Recorder provides the touchscreen display,
the standby key with a power status LED (PWR), and three type A USB connec-
tors. A removable memory pack, to be locked by a key, is also available.

Display
The R&S IQW is equipped with a touchscreen display. It is also possible to con-
trol the instrument via mouse and/or keyboard. Both can be connected to the
USB connectors on the front panel.
Standby Key
The standby key connects/disconnects all internal modules of the I/Q Wideband
Recorder to/from the DC supply voltages generated by its internal power supply.
Power LEDs
The Power LEDs indicate whether the I/Q Wideband Recorder is ready to operate
(LED "PWR" lights green) or in standby state (LED "Standby" lights orange).
The LEDs do not light when the AC power switch on the rear panel is in position 0
(Off).
USB 2.0 Connectors (2x)
The two USB 2.0 ports (type A, master USB) can be used for connecting external
devices as keyboard, mouse or other devices. Additional USB 2.0 connectors are
located on the rear panel of the I/Q Wideband Recorder.
USB 3.0 Connector (1x)
The USB 3.0 port (type A, master USB) can be used for connecting external stor-
age devices or data sticks. Additional USB 3.0 connectors are located on the rear
panel of the I/Q Wideband Recorder.
The length of the connecting USB cables should not exceed 1 m. The maxi-
mum current per USB port is 500 mA. See also Chapter 4.2, "EMI Suppres-
sion", on page 10. To avoid disturbances, do not connect or disconnect
USB devices while data is being recorded or replayed.
Cartridge LEDs
The LED "State" is currently not used and always off. The LED "Act." indicates
the activity of the cartridge. It flashes, when the cartridge is in use (read/write
operations or at initialization at system start), otherwise it is off.

Lock for Memory Pack
The memory pack is secured by a key. You can replace the pack while the key is
in its vertical (unlocked) position.
Memory Pack
The removable memory pack contains the storage media. Additional memory
packs are available as options.
The data rates and maximum recording times of the memory packs depend on
the operating mode of the source instrument; refer to the specifications for details.
Risk of data loss
Do not remove the memory pack while the R&S IQW is in ready state, or
while data is recorded or replayed. Always switch the instrument to standby
(or turn the power off) before you remove the memory pack.
Backups of recorded data
The solid state drives in the memory packs have a limited useful life,
depending on the number of recording cycles and their repetition rate. For
details, refer to the R&S IQW specifications. To prevent loss of valuable
data, perform regular backups using the archiving function.
5.2 Rear Panel Description
The rear panel contains the mains connector with the AC power switch and sev-
eral connectors for instrument control and digital I/Q data transfer.

GPS
This SMA port is used for the GPS antenna input. It is an active antenna port with
output voltage 3 V / max. 35 mA.
