combined. T is is possible because dependant on t e selected procedure
it is always obvious w at t e function of t e keys must be.
During recording and playback t e recorder keys ave t e standard
recorder key functions.
If no recording or playback is taking place t ese keys ave a different
function. T e and keys can be used to scroll t roug a selection
of recordings, numbers in a list or t roug a settings menu. T e key
will always exit t e current operation. W en editing text t ey function
as explained in t e table of t e alp a-numerical functions below.

Keep t e Call Recorder dry. If it gets wet, wipe it
dry immediately Liquids mig t contain minerals
t at can corrode t e electronic circuits.
Use and store t e Call Recorder only in normal
temperature environments. Temperature extremes
can s orten t e life of electronic devices and
distort or melt plastic parts.
Keep t e Call Recorder away from excessive dust
and dirt t at can cause premature wear of parts.
Do not use ars c emicals, cleaning solvents or
strong detergents to clean t e Call Recorder.

1 Introduction
Silver Line Call Recorders for ISDN are digital audio recorders t at can
record from basic rate (BRI) T ere are two models:
• ISDN II for two S0 lines wit compression facilities for up to 4
c annels
• ISDN II for four S0 lines wit compression facilities for up to 8
c annels
T ese recorders are always s ipped as a base model wit out recording
c annels plus a number of c annels up to t e maximum available for
t at model. Depending on t e model Call Recorder and t e number and
type of ISDN lines t at you ave t e Call Recorder ISDN can
simultaneously record up to 8 calls.
You must always c eck t at t e number of c annels t at you require is
installed. W en insufficient c annels are installed an upgrade up to t e
maximum c annel count for t e model t at you ave can be ordered
from your dealer.
T e Call Recorder can be delivered in two forms: build in a desktop case
or in a case for in a 19” rack.
T e Call Recorder ISDN always as an internal drive and a network
interface.
A CD writer is optional and available for t e 19” model.
T is manual applies to all variations of t e Call Recorder ISDN. T e
operation is kept almost t e same between models. W en t ere are
differences because of t e facilities t at are installed, t ey are quite
obvious and t e manual will explain t e differences between models
t at t e user may see. T e file format of t e recordings is identical for
all recorders and all communicate wit PC software in t e same way.
1.1 Basic Functions
Call Recorders ISDN are designed for continuous unattended recording.
All recordings are stored digitally on t e internal drive. T e large
storage capacity of t e internal drive ensures t e ability of t e Call
Recorder ISDN of long term unattended recording. Recordings are
randomly accessible. T e Call Recorder issues a warning w en t e
internal drive is getting full. If t e warning is ignored t e oldest
recordings will be overwritten by t e newest.
Stored recordings can be accessed on t e recorder itself or on PC’s via
t e LAN using t e optional Call Recorder Access software.
You can copy recordings from t e internal drive to CD if your Call
Recorder ISDN is equipped wit a CD drive. Copying recordings to CD-
recordable can be done in different ways for different purposes. It is
possible to copy single recordings, copy a selection of recordings or
automatically copy all new recordings. Recordings on CD can be viewed

T e Call Recorder ISDN allows t e user to listen in to ongoing calls
t roug t e internal speaker; t is is called t e Monitor function. T e
volume of t e internal speaker can be adjusted. T e Call Recorder ISDN
also allows for t e connection of a eadset. T e eadset can be used to
monitor calls and to listen to recordings.
1.2 Speech Compression
Call Recorders ISDN t at ave compression facilities on board compress
recordings according to t e G.723.1 format. G.723.1 compression as a
good balance between audio quality and recording size and can be
reproduced on most PC’s wit Microsoft Windows versions. Compressed
recordings take up 1/10t of t e size of uncompressed recordings.
T erefore t e compression as a profound effect on t e storage
capacity of t e Call Recorder ISDN in terms of recording time.
Real time compression w ile recording many c annels requires a lot of
extra processing power and t erefore extra ardware in t e form of
very fast processors.
1.3 Network
T e Call Recorder ISDN features an Et ernet interface. T e Call Recorder
ISDN can be connected to a PC or computer network t roug t e
Et ernet interface. Wit its own IP address t e Call Recorder ISDN acts as
an FTP-server from w ic recordings can be downloaded using any FTP
client. T e Call Recorder Access software can be used to connect to t e
Call Recorder ISDN over t e network to retrieve recordings and arc ive
t em on t e PC. T e Call Recorder Access software as extensive
arc iving capabilities including t e creation of special arc ives suited for
backup on CD. T e Call Recorder Access System allows for fax image
recovery of recorded fax transmissions.
T e Call Recorder can e-mail its status in case of a malfunction.
Recordings can also be emailed according to t e extension\e-mail list.
Yet anot er application of t e Et ernet connection is Real Time Remote
Call monitoring over t e network. T e optional RTR Call Monitor
software can be used to monitor all connected telep one lines over t e
network.
1.4 Search recordings
T e Call Recorder as its own menu driven searc function to find and
play specific recordings. Recordings can be searc ed for according to
date, Called number and line number. T e Call Recorder ISDN as an
internal speaker for playback of recordings.

1.5 Encr ption
All recordings can be encrypted. T e Call Recorder ISDN uses t e
CryptoCard option for t is feature. Playback of encrypted recordings is
not possible wit out t e CryptoCard t e recording was made wit .
Playback of encrypted recordings on a PC is possible only wit t e
optional CryptoCard reader in conjunction wit t e original or a
matc ing CryptoCard.
1.6 Pass through or passive configuration
T e Call Recorders ISDN can be connected to t e line in two ways:
Pass t roug mode – t e recorder is installed between t e network and
t e telep one system and all ISDN c annels pass t roug t e internal
bus of t e recorder and t e recorder can take control at any time. Pass
T roug mode is also occasionally called In-Line mode
Passive mode – t e recorder is connected in parallel to t e line and just
passively listening on t e incoming and outgoing c annels of t e line.
T e Call Recorders ISDN ave been designed for pass t roug mode. T e
reason was t at t e recorders must comply wit t e regulations of most
countries t at – at least for some applications – require t at t ere is
some sort of notification to t e caller t at recording takes place. T is is
only possible in pass t roug mode.
Pass t roug mode as several ot er advantages t en notification to t e
user:
It can intercept t e D-c annel and t erefore control signaling between
t e telep one system and t e network. T is is used to filter numbers
sent by t e PBX so t at t ey are not sent to t e line.
It can be used to capture commands from t e user to t e recorder
w ic as several applications t at will be explained in t is manual.
Because of pass t roug mode t e Call Recorder is equipped wit loop-
t roug relays to prevent t e Call Recorder to disrupt telep one
communication in case of a power failure or anot er malfunction. T e
loop-t roug relays t en close to fall back into passive mode and
ongoing telep one calls are not disconnected.
1.7 Privac related functions
In some situations Call Recording is perceived as an intrusion of t e
privacy. T e Call Recorder as several functions t at allow t e user to
protect t e privacy of anyone involved.
In most applications t e recorder is set up to record all calls
automatically. T e Call Recorder ISDN can owever be used to record
specific numbers only or can be set to exclude certain numbers from
recording. For t is feature t e Call Recorder ISDN as a Numberlist t at

can be used as “blacklist” or as “w itelist”. See C apter 5 for more
details.
T e Call Recorder ISDN can be used as a security recorder. For t is
purpose t e recorder as a feature w ere t e number of day’s can be
set for t e recorder to keep t e recordings. In case of an emergency,
recordings can be accessed w ile daily recordings are removed after t e
set number of days. T is is used w en for matters of privacy it is not
desirable to keep recordings of t e people involved for a long period.
See § 3.9 for details.
Anot er option for security recording is t e DTMF initiated recording.
T e Call Recorder can be set up so it can detect DTMF tones on t e line
and start and or stop recording, or label recordings so t ey are not
deleted afterwards.
T e CryptoCard option can be very effective to protect privacy. W en
t e Call Recorder ISDN is set up to record wit t e CryptoCard t e
privacy of t e people involved can be guaranteed because t e
recordings can only be played wit a card matc ing t e card t e
recording was made wit and t e password t at belongs to it. Wit out
t e CryptoCards t e recordings are not accessible. T ere are CryptoCards
t at can only be used to encode and not to decode recordings, so even
w en t e recorder is stolen t e privacy of its users remains protected.

1.8 What's in the box
T e following parts are supplied wit your Call Recorder ISDN II:
Desktop model ISDN II (basic rate):
• Mains power supply adapter and cable
• 2 or 4 ISDN cable wit two RJ45 connectors (2 meter)
• 2 or 4 ISDN cable wit two RJ45 connectors (30 centimeters)
• 2 or 4 ISDN T-adapters
19” model ISDN II (basic rate):
• Mains cable (not available for Switzerland and Australia)
• 2 or 4 ISDN cable wit two RJ45 connectors (2 meter)
• 2 or 4 ISDN cable wit two RJ45 connectors (30 centimeters)
• 2 or 4 ISDN T-adapters
• Brackets and screws for 19inc rack mounting

1.9 Connecting the Power suppl
1.9.1 On the desktop model
T e Call Recorder ISDN desktop is powered t roug an AC power
adapter. It does not ave an On/Off switc ; t e Call Recorder ISDN is
turned on by connecting t e power supply.
1.9.2 On the 19” model
Use t e supplied mains cable. T e recorder does not ave an On/Off
switc ; t e Call Recorder ISDN is turned on by connecting t e power
supply.
In some countries (Switzerland, Australia) no mains cable is supplied
because it cannot be boug t in t e country of manufacture (T e
Net erlands). Any standard computer mains cable will do.

1.10 Connecting to basic rate ISDN
1.10.1 Recommended wa to connect
T e Call Recorder ISDN II is connected in series between t e NT1 line
port and ot er equipment.
Per line you ave received a T-splitter a long 8 wire ISDN cable and a
s ort 8 wire ISDN cable.
Take t e line of your existing equipment from t e NT1 box and connect
it to t e NT port of t e splitter.
Use one cable to connect t e port labeled “ISDN” on t e splitter wit
t e port labeled ISDN 1 on t e Call Recorder.
Connect t e port of t e splitter labeled TE wit t e NT1 box.
Make t e same connections for t e ports ISDN 2, 3 and 4.
As explained in t e introduction, t e Call Recorder can work in pass
t roug mode w ere it is processing t e complete data stream and in
passive mode w ere it is just listening. Alt oug t is is a substantial
difference it does not affect t e connection to t e line. It is controlled
internally wit relays and can be configured in software.

T e figure below is an example of a possible setup of t e Call Recorder
ISDN II, using t e 19” model.
1.10.2 Alternative wa to connect
Some users do not like to disconnect t e lines w en t ey install a Call
Recorder. T ey prefer to connect t e Call Recorder t e way ot er ISDN
terminal equipment is used on a point to multipoint basic rate line in a
star like network structure.
T is alternative connection met od is a possibility. T e drawback
owever is t at pass t roug mode wit all its advantages is not
possible.
To use t e alternative met od to connect you must use a traditional
ISDN T-adapter and a 4 wire ISDN cable for t e connection to t e
recorder. W en t e Call Recorder is added to t e little point to
multipoint network it can passively record all equipment connected.
Please note: It is important t at you use a 4 wire cable for t is
connection met od. If you are in doubt about t e correct connection
met od for t is alternative, order t e T-adapters and 4 wire cables from
your Call Recorder dealer.
