1.3 Register on My ROLI
Visitmy.roli.comandsignupwithausernameandpasswordofyourchoice.Whenyouhave
signedupandloggedin,thewebsitewillaskyoutoregisteryourproduct.UseyourProduct
RegistrationCode.ThecodeisprintedontheRegistrationCard.Thiscardisinthebox
markedMakeMusicNow,
whichcomesinthepackagewithyourRISE.

Login and Download ROLI Software
NowthatyouhavecreatedanaccountonMyROLI,youcanloginanddownloadthelatest
RISESoftwareBundle.ThebundleincludesROLIDashboardandEquatorforRISE.Click
either“DownloadSoftwareBundleforMac”or“DownloadSoftwareBundleforWindows,”
dependinguponwhichoperatingsystemyouuse.
1.4 Installation for Mac and Windows
Whenthedownloadiscomplete,opentheDownloadsfolderonyourcomputeranddouble
clicktheinstallerfile(s).Followtheonscreeninstructionsandchoosethelocationordisk
whereyouwanttoinstallthesoftware.
Theinstallwillrequireapproximately2GBofdiskspace.
Mac:Afterdoubleclickingtheinstaller,youmayseeamessagethatsaystheinstalleris
froman“unidentifieddeveloper.”Don’tworry.Thesoftwareissafetoinstall.Youcanbypass
thismessagebyrightclickingtheinstallerfromaFinderwindowandselectingOpen.
Windows:Afterdoubleclickingtheinstaller,youmayseeamessagetosaythatWindows
hasprotectedyourPCbystoppingan“unrecognisedapplication”fromopening.Don’tworry.
Thesoftwareissafetoinstall.Youcanbypassthismessagebyclicking“moreinfo”onthe
message,thenthe“runanyway”button.

Connectingthepedaljack:
Thepedaljackshouldonlybeinsertedasshowninthisimage.Takecarewheninsertingthe
jack,anddonotattempttoforceitpastthepositiondepictedabove.
2.2 The Keywave Surface
TheRISEfeaturesacontinuous,elastic,siliconesurfacedividedinto25keywaves.
Followingtheorderofnotesonastandardkeyboard,thekeywavesrepresentthesame
pitchesandintervalsfoundonapiano.Thetouchsensitivityofthekeywavesurfaceallows
tactilecontrolofparameterssuchaspitch,volume,andtimbrethroughsimple,intuitive
movements.Thekeywavesurfaceissensitiveeventogentlepressure,andstrongforceis
notrequiredtomaximiseitsexpressiveness.Whilemadeofdurablesilicone,thekeywave
surfaceshouldnotbepinched,stretched,orpounded.

2.3 The Control Panel
PresetSwitch:
ThetwobuttonsonthePresetSwitchareprimarilyusedtoselectpresetswithinEquator.
Theyalsohavetwootherfunctions.InMIDIModethePresetSwitchtransmitsMIDIprogram
changemessagestothirdpartyhardwareandsoftwaresynthesisers.Simultaneously
pressingandreleasingthetwobuttonsactivatesBluetoothpairing,connectingtheRISEto
compatibleBluetoothenableddevices.
TouchFaders:
InExpressionMode,theTouchFaderscontrolthedynamicsofGlide,Slide,andPress.In
MIDImodetheytransmitassignableMIDICCs.
XYTouchpad:
InExpressionMode,youcancontrolanysoundparameterinEquatorthroughtouchalong
theXandYaxisoftheXYTouchpad.InMIDIMode,theXYTouchpadcantransmitMIDI
CCsforcontrolofthirdpartysoftwareandhardwaresynthesisers.
TheTouchpadbehavesasa“freefloating”controller.WhenusingEquatorforRISEin
standalonemode,theTouchpadwillremaininthepositionthatyouleaveituntilyoumoveit
againorchangepresets.TheTouchpadpositiongetsstoredwiththepreset.Althoughthere
arenorules,westoremostofourpresetswiththeTouchpadpositioninthebottomleft
corner.
Power/Modebutton:
ThismultipurposebuttonindicateswhethertheRISEisonoroff,whetheritisinExpression
ModeorMIDIMode,andthestatusofthebatterycharge.
Octaveshift:
Thesetwobuttonsswitchoctavestoextendtherangeofthe25keywavecontroller.


2.4 USB connection

WhenconnectedbytheUSBtypeBporttoacomputer,theRISEactsasaUSBMIDI
controller.Itsbatterywillchargewhenconnectedtoacomputerthatispluggedin.
2.5 Bluetooth Connection

TheRISEtransmitsMIDIoverBluetoothtocompatibledevices.Jointlypressingandthen
releasingbothPresetSwitchbuttonsbeginstheBluetoothpairingprocess.ThePower/Mode
buttonblinksbluetoindicateBluetoothPairingMode.
WhentheUSBcableisunplugged,theRISEautomaticallyentersBluetoothpairingmode.
YoumustcompletepairingtheRISE,however,byenablingBluetoothandselectingthe
RISEonthedevicethatyouareconnecting.ThispreventstheRISEfromaccidentally
pairingwithanotherdevicewithinsignalrange.
PressandreleasebothPresetSwitchbuttonssimultaneouslytoexitBluetoothpairingmode.
DisconnectBluetooththroughthedeviceyouareconnectingtotheRISE.

InExpressionModethethreeTouchFaderscontrolthedynamicsoftheGlide,Slide,and
Pressdimensionsoftouch.SettingtheTouchFadersatdifferentlevelschangesthe
sensitivityofthekeywavesurfacetotouchandthereforealtersexpressionwhenyouplay.
ExpressionModeisdesignedtoletyoumodifytheexpressivenessoftheSeaboardRISE
tosuitspecificsoundsandyourindividualplayingstyle.
TouchFaders
ThelefttouchfadercontrolsthedynamicsofGlide,orsidewaysmovementsofthefinger
onkeywavesoralongribbons.WhentheGlideTouchFaderissettominimum,sideways
movementswillnotbendpitch.TheinstrumentisinPianoMode,anditwillrespondlikea
standardkeyboard.WhentheTouchFaderissettomaximum,thekeywavesurfaceis
maximallysensitivetosidewaysmovements,andevenminutemovementswillresultinpitch
bend.
Note:Theilluminationofthe
Glide
TouchFadercorrespondstothelevelofthe
keywaves’
sensitivitytothe
Glide
movement.
ThecentertouchfadercontrolsthedynamicsofSlide,orverticalmovementsupand
downthekeywave.WhentheSlideTouchFaderisatalowersetting,thespectrumofsound
availableformodulationalongtheYaxisofthekeywaveisnarrower.Thismeansthatyou
canreachthemaximumendoftherangeofmodulationwithashortermovementupordown
akeywave.WhentheSlideTouchFaderisatahighersetting,thespectrumofsound
availablealongtheYaxisiswider.Thismeansthatyourfingermusttravelagreater
distancetoreachthemaximumendoftherangeofmodulation,andyouwillbeableto
accessawiderrangeofintermediatesoundsalongtheverticalpathoftravel.
Note:TheilluminationontheSlideTouchFadercorrespondstothedistancethatmustbe
travelledbetweenthetwopolesofthesoundavailableformodulation.
TherighttouchfadercontrolsthedynamicsofPress,ortheresponseofthekeywave
surfacetocontinuouspressureappliedafterStrike.WhenthePressTouchFaderisata
lowersetting,thespectrumofsoundavailabletomodulatethroughpressureisnarrower.
Thismeansthatyoucanreachthemaximumendoftherangeofmodulationthroughlighter
pressureonthekeywavesurface.WhenthePressTouchFaderisatahighersetting,the
spectrumofsoundavailablethroughpressureiswider.Thismeansthatyouwillpressmore
firmlytoreachthemaximumendoftherangeofmodulation,andyouwillbeabletoaccess
awiderrangeofintermediatesoundsasyouvarypressureonthekeywavesurface.

TouchFadercorrespondstothedepthofpressurethat
mustbeexertedtotravelbetweenthetwopolesofthesoundavailableformodulation.
XYTouchpad
InExpressionMode,youcancontrolanysoundparameterinEquatorthroughtouchalong
theXandYaxisoftheXYTouchpad.TheXYTouchpadprovidestwoassignableMIDI

controlsignals.Manyexternalhardwaresynthsandthirdpartysynthpluginscanalsouse
thesetwocontrolsignalsasmodulationsources.TheXYTouchpaddefaultstotransmitthe
followingMIDICCs:

2.7 Charging the Battery

ThebatterychargeswhentheRISEispluggedintoapowersupplieddevicethroughthe
USBcableordirectlytoapowersource.
ThePower/Modebuttonindicatesthebattery’slevelofcharge.WhenchargingtheLEDwill
bered,amber,orgreentoindicateachargestatusoflowcharge,halfcharge,orfullcharge.
WhentheRISEisnotconnectedtoapowersource,thePower/Modebutton’sLEDwillflash
continuouslytonotifyyouofthelevelofthediminishingcharge.Therapidityofredflashes
indicatesthebatterylife:
● Flashesredonceeveryfiveseconds:Batteryislowwithlessthan60minutesof
playingtimeremaining.
● Flashingredonceeverythreeseconds:Batteryislowwithlessthan40minutesof
playingtimeremaining.

Protectingthebattery:
IfyouanticipatenotusingyourRISEforthreemonthsorlonger,werecommendthatyou
takethefollowingstepstoensureitsfunctionality:
● Keepitfullychargedwhennotinuse.
● Storeitinanenvironmentwithlowhumidityandatemperaturebetween1025℃.
● Keepitawayfromcorrosivegas.
Theprotectthehealthofthelithiumpolymerbattery,werecommendyouchargeyourRISE
everysixmonthsattheminimum.
2.8 DC Connection and Charging an External Device
ConnectingtheRISEdirectlytoapowersourcethroughanexternalmainspowersupply
chargesthebatteryaswellasanydevicethatisattachedtotheRISE’sUSB“A”port.
Connectingdirectlytoapowersourcewillchargethebatteryfaster(takingapproximately
threehours)thanifyouchargethroughaUSBconnectiontoapowersupplieddevice.The
RISEcomeswithaUSBcable,butitdoesnotincludeanexternalmainspowersupply.

sourcescontrolledbyStrike,Press,Glide,Slide,andLifttoavarietyofparametersinthe
synthsuchasfiltercutofforLFOfrequency.
3.3 Software and firmware updates
TheRISE’ssoftwareandfirmwareareupdatedregularly.ROLIDashboardiswhereyouget
thelatestupdates.ConnectyourRISEtothecomputerandlaunchROLIDashboardfor

RISE.Undertheapplicationmenuselect“Checkforupdates”toupdateyoursoftwareand
firmware.
4. Playing the Seaboard RISE
4.1 Five Dimensional Touch or 5D Touch
TheRISEisamultidimensionalinstrumentthatletsyoumodulatesoundthroughfive
dimensionsoftouch.Throughsimplemovementsandgestures,youcanshapesoundeasily
anddiscovernewmodesofexpression.TheiconsbelowdepicttheFiveDimensionsof
TouchontheSeaboardRISEanditsaccompanyingsoftware.TheFiveDimensionsof
Touchare:
Strike:Thevelocityandforcewithwhichafingermakescontactwithakeywave.This
dimensionoftouchcorrespondstoMIDIvelocityonastandardkeyboard.
Press:ThepressureappliedtothekeywaveaftertheinitialStrike.Thekeywavesrespond
toeachmomentofcontinuoustouch,transmittingminutevariationsofpressuretosound.
Thiscontinuouspressuresensitivityallowsforswells,fades,andotherdetailedexpressions.
Glide:Horizontalmovementsfromsidetosideonakeywaveandleftrightmovements
alongtheribbons.Glidemovementsbendandadjustpitchasnaturallyasonastring
instrument,allowingeffectssuchasvibratoandglissando,allonapolyphonicbasis.Glideis
typicallyassignedtopitch,butitcanbeassignedtoothersoundparameters.
Slide:Verticalmovementsupanddownakeywave.YoucanassignSlidetomostsound
parametersinEquator.Forexample,anupwardmovementcanopenafilterthatturnsan
organsoundintoabrassysound,whileadownwardmovementcanclosethefilter.Your
initialpointofcontactwiththekeywave,nomatterwherethispointis,becomesthebasisfor
soundmodulationontheYaxisaboveandbelowthatpoint.
Lift:Thereleasevelocityorspeedofliftofffromakeywave.YoucanassignLifttomost
soundparametersinEquatorandothercompatiblesynths.Forexample,arapidliftcan
createalingeringresonanceorahardpluck.

4.2 Playing Techniques

Youcanapplyplayingtechniquesassociatedwithkeyboard,string,andelectronic
instrumentstotheSeaboardRISE.Playingtechniquesinclude:
Strikeandhold:Strikethekeywaveandholdforadurationwithoutaddingany
additionalmovement.
Glidevibrato:Pressingintoakeywaveandholdingthepointofyourfingerthere,
wiggleyourfingerfromsidetoside.Thepitchbendeffectofvibratowillwidenthe
widerthearcofmovementawayfromthestationaryfinger.
Glideglissando:Moveyourfingersalongthepitchribbonsatthetopand/orbottom
ofthekeywavesurface.Glidebendscanbeuptotwooctaveslongineither
direction.
Continuouspressmodulation:Whilesustaininganote,increaseanddecrease
downwardpressureonthekeywavetomodulatethenote.
Legatobend:Pressandcontinuetoholdanynoteonthekeywavesurfacewith
onefingerandplayanothernoteahalfstepaboveorbelowwithanotherfinger
Slidevibrato:Afterstrikingandholdinganote,Slideyourfingersupanddownthe
verticalaxisofthekeywaverapidly.
Slidemodulation:Afterstrikinganote,moveyourfingersupordownthekeywave
tomodulatethenote.

5. Working with other hardware and software
TheRISEiscompatiblewithanyelectronicinstrumentthatcanreceiveMIDIandproduce
soundinresponse.IttransmitsMIDIonupto15MIDIchannelssimultaneously,enabling
polyphonicpitchbend.
Thereceivinginstrumentsthatyouusemustbemultitimbralforyoutoexperiencethefull
expressivecapabilitiesoftheRISE.Theyshouldhaveapitchbendrangeof+/oneoctave
andbeabletorespondtoaftertouch.
Working with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)
Equatorisastandalonesoftwaresynthesiserandsoundenginethatworksseamlesslywith

InmanyDAWs,asingletrackcanreceivemultipleMIDIchannelsfromtheRISEandsend
theMIDIdatatoamultitimbralsynthlikeEquator.OtherDAWsarelimitedtoasingle
channelpertrack,soconfiguringyourprojecttotakefulladvantageoftheRISE’s
dimensionsofexpressionisnotauniformprocess.ItdependsontheDAW.

AlthoughtheRISEdoesnothavetraditionalfivepinDINconnectors,itletsyouconnectto
hardwarethatrequirestheseconnectors.Oneoptionistoconnecttoacomputerand

transmitMIDIviaaMIDIinterface.OryoucanconnectaUSBMIDIClassCompliantdevice
thatconvertsMIDIoverUSBtotraditionalfivepinDINconnectors.

BasiccareandattentionwillprotectyourRISEandhelpitstayinoptimalconditionforyears
tocome.Avoidexcessiveforceonthekeywavesurface,andtrytokeeptheRISEaway

eatingfood.
Tocleanthekeywavesurfaceyoumayuseadamp,bleachfreeandoilfreecleansing
wipes.DonotuseanyabrasivecleansingagentsontheRISEoritskeywaves.
