icatean entire zone just to sendprogram change commands. The SL-2001has the ability to send simple MIDI program
change commands to eight auxiliarydevices. Selecting theAux option (csl 2) identifies the MIDI device as an auxiliaryunit
which will receive MIDI program change commands independently ofthe zones (although a zone may still be assigned to
an Aux deviceifdesired). The eight devices designated as auxiliary units will appear on the AUX PROG screen, where the
desired program change values may beentered (seesection7 for furtherinformation).
The Format parameter refers tothe arrangement ofpresetsonthe MIDI device being installed. There are four preset formats
in common use:MIDI, MIDI+1, Bank, and Alpha.
MIDI: Presets on the instrument are numbered starting with program 0 (zero)and increaseby singlesteps.Example: 0,1,2,
3,4, 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,etc.
MIDI+1: Presetsonthe instrument are numbered starting with program 1 and increase by single steps.Example: 1,2, 3,4,
5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,etc.
Bank: Presetsare arranged in banks, with eight presetsper bank. The first digit ofthe preset specifies the bank, and the sec-
ond digit specifies the preset within the bank (this isthe format usedon the SL-2001). Example: 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,
21,
22,
etc.
Alpha: Presetsare designated by a letter plus a number from one to eight. Example: Al,A2, A3,A4, A5, A6, A7,A8,Bl, B2,
etc.
Bysettingthe Format parameter to match the instrument being installed, the SL-2001will beable to display program change
settings on the edit screens in the proper format. Thisgreatly simplifies programming ofpresets; ifyou know that a particu-
lar string preset on a synthesizer is in bank 2 preset number 1,you do not need to know that this isactually equivalent to
MIDI program change command 8.
Afterthe device namehas been entered andtheprogramandformatparametershave been set, press the Starswitchto return
to the main screen. The new devicewillnow be displayed with the port and channel as programmed.
Repeat the installationprocedureforall devices in the system. If you havea multi-timbralsound module,each channel of
the instrumentmust be installed as a separate device. As an example, ifsound module XYZ can play two sounds at once,
install deviceXYZ1 andXYZ2 into the SL-2001 devicelist.
Once all deviceshave beeninstalled, itispossibleto reviewthe listofdevices at any time. The first three controlslidersare
allactive onthe main screen. Moving Control Slider 1 scrolls through the listofall devicenames. The port and channel will
change to match thevalueschosen when the device was installed. Moving the port (orchannel) sliderwill likewisecause
the device name to change accordingly.
NOTE: To change the port and channel for a device after it has been installed, it is necessary' to delete the device (using the
Alpha switch} and re-install it. Clanging the name, Prg parameter or Format parameter/or a device dues not require dele-
tion. Select the device on the main screen, then press the Star switch to access the alternate screen for editing.
ZONE CONFIGURATION
Thefirst stepin creating an entirely new SL-2001preset isthe configuration ofthe zones. Each zone functions asa link
between the keyboard andan outputdevice (asound module). For each zone thatwillbe used in the preset, the inputand
outputmustbe assigned to the desired devices. EnterEdit Mode andpress FUNCTION switch 4 to access the ZONE screen.
The zone digit will display the number ofthe zone to be edited, and may be changed with the left and right arrow switches.
In normal operation, a zone receives MIDI data on only one specific channel, processesthe data, and sendsthe data toa SL-
2001 output ona single MIDI channel. The source and destination for the zone are selected by choosinga devicename from
the SL-2001devicelist.The actual SL-2001port and channel number need notbespecified, as they are implied by the device
name,
Multiple zones can be assigned in any combinationto theSL-2001 keyboard or external keyboards. Up toeight sounds may
be controlled simultaneously, each with fullyindependent key range, dynamics,transpose, etc.
