Making Rear Panel Connections
The external power supply included with your SP-1200
unit connects to the 4-pin locking XLR jack.
Your SP-1200 reissue provides balanced audio on 1/4”
(6.35mm) TRS jacks for all individual channel outputs and the
sample input Monitor and Mix outputs. To duplicate the
original SP-1200 sound, use unbalanced TS cables.
Like all classic instruments in the SP-12 family, the Mix
output has reverse polarity (phase) relative to the other audio
inputs and outputs. Filtered channel outputs 1 through 6,
channel outputs 7 and 8, and the sample input monitor are
heard at the Mix output unless a cable is inserted into their
dedicated TRS jack, disconnecting them from the mix.
(Connections at the unfiltered channel outputs 1-6 do not
affect the mix output.)
Most headphones can be driven from the mix output quite
loudly. Please turn the Mix Volume control fully clockwise
(left) before connecting the headphones. Carefully increase
the volume to a responsible level.
The remaining 1/4” jacks use standard unbalanced TS
1/4” cables and duplicate the original SP-1200 Sample Input,
SMPTE,Met/Clk,andfootswitchinterfaces. The original
SP-1200 MIDI interface is duplicated on standard 5-pin DIN
connections. Please see the original SP-1200 Owner’s
manual for full details.
Working with the Memory Card
When the Disk module is activated, the SP-1200 will
show DISK[0-9]onthedisplay'sfirstline. The 16-character
display name of the currently selected file or folder stored on
the memory card is shown on the second line. Folders are
displayed with a /at the end of the display name.

Press or hold the < and > keys to select files and
folders. With a folder selected, press Enter to access its
contents. To exit a folder, hold the > key to fast-forward
through the list of files and folders until the special folder
name ../ is displayed and press the Enter key.
Disk module functions 0 through 8 work with the currently
selected file just like the classic SP-1200’s disk drive worked
with a floppy disk storing sequences and sounds. Saving
operations will ask for a Yes or No (y/n?) response
allowinguserstoconfirmbeforeoverwritingmemorycard
data. All other Disk module functions start immediately after
pressing their numbered key. An activity indicator will appear
as a pattern of special characters * + - in the upper right-
hand corner of the display during saving and loading
operations that can take a few moments to complete.
Disk images in .HFE format are indicated with a
superscript Hand can be loaded just like any other file.

Disk module function 9 allows users to either Save All As
the current sounds and sequences to a new or existing file, or
to rename or delete a file or folder on the memory card. Begin
by pressing 9 to select Disk 9 (Save All As / Rename).

To Save All, use the <, >, and Enter keys to select the
folder inside which the file will be located and press Yes.

Input a name using Slider 1 to choose characters and the
< and > keys to move the blinking _ cursor. Press Enter to
confirm. If the selected name is already in use, SP-1200 will
ask for a Yes or No confirmation before overwriting the file.

To rename or delete the currently selected file or folder,
press No at the prompt SaveAll In?[Y/N]. Input a
name using Slider 1. Files and empty folders can be deleted
by inputting a blank name.

The new Set-up Special Function 27 Create Folder asks
where new folders should be created when activated. Use the
<, >, and Enter keys to highlight the folder inside which the
new sub-folder should be located. Note: The root folder is
displayed simply as “/“.

Filter Real Time Control
Four sliders allow users to tune the initial cutoff frequency
and the resonance of the SSI2144 analog dynamic filters on
channels 1 and 2 by reaching just over the rear edge of the
front panel. The cutoff frequency and resonance increase as
the sliders are moved toward the center of the SP-1200. The
classic SP-1200 sound is duplicated with the resonance
slider fully left, and the frequency slider centered. Users can
either adjust these analog controls to a fixed setting, or move
them real time to add dimension to a performance.
Display Control
The new Set-up Special Function 26 LCD Control allows
users to set the color of the LCD backlight and its brightness.
Activate the Set-up module and select 23 (Special). Select
the new Special Function 26 LCD Control.

When the function is activated, the SP-1200 displays:

The < and > keys control a cursor that selects among the
three colors. YES and NO set the selected color on or off
respectively. Use Slider 1 to adjust the backlight brightness.
Data Transfer from Classic SP-1200
Using a single MIDI cable, you can transfer sounds and
sequences from your existing floppy disks to your SP-1200
reissue and save them to new files on the memory card.
To set up the data transfer, first power on the classic
SP-1200 with the included 3.5” Transfer OS Disk inserted.
The modified OS will load with the software ID
RossumElectroXFR.Next, connect the MIDI Output from
the classic SP-1200 to the MIDI Input of the SP-1200 reissue
with a standard MIDI cable.
Note: Everything will be transferred from the classic
SP-1200’s memory, replacing ALL sequences and sounds in
the SP-1200 reissue’s memory without a warning, just like
using the Disk 0 (Load All Sequences & Sounds) function.
Eject the OS disk and insert the 3.5” disk containing the
sequences and sound data to transfer. Activate the Disk
module and select Disk 0 (Load Sequences and Sounds).
Go to the SP-1200 reissue. Activate the Set-up module
and select 23 (Special). Select the new Special Function

On the classic SP-1200, activate the Set-up module and
select 23 (Special). Select the new Special Function
26 XferToReissue
26 (Transfer to Reissue) and press Enter. The classic SP-1200
will display:

Press NO=Cancel
The percent of data transferred will increment to show the
transfer progress. The SP-1200 reissue will start receiving
data and display (with a blinking *):
Receiving !*
A transfer takes about 2 1/2 minutes. When the transfer
of all sequences and sound data has finished successfully,
the Classic SP-1200 will return to the Special Functions
menu, and the SP-1200 Reissue will display:
Receive Complete
Press ENTER
Pressing Enter on the SP-1200 Reissue returns you to the
Special Functions list. You should now save the transferred
Sounds and Sequences to a new file on the memory card
using Disk 9 “Save All As / Rename". Once this is complete,
you are ready to either insert a different disk into the classic
SP-1200 and repeat the transfer process, or begin using the
transferred sequences and sounds in your SP-1200 reissue.
Note: At any time during a transfer, you can press the NO
key (#7) on the classic SP-1200 to cancel the transfer and
return it to the Special Functions menu. If you do that, or if
an error occurs during a transfer, the SP-1200 reissue’s
memory will be cleared and the reissue will display:

Another Note: The most common cause of a transfer error
is that sounds or sequences are played on the classic
SP-1200 while the SP-1200 reissue is waiting for the transfer.
