About Rotel
Our story began over 50 years ago. Over the decades, we have received
hundreds of awards for our products and satisfied hundreds of thousands
of people who take their entertainment seriously - like you!
Rotel was founded by a family whose passionate interest in music led them
to manufacture high-fidelity components of uncompromising quality. Through
the years, that passion has remained undiminished and the family goal of
providing exceptional value for audiophiles and music lovers, regardless
of their budget, is shared by all Rotel employees.
RotelÊs engineers work as a close team, listening to, and fine tuning, each
new product until it reaches their exacting musical standards. They are
free to choose components from around the world in order to make that
product the best they can. You are likely to find capacitors from the United
Kingdom and Germany, semiconductors from Japan or the United States,
while toroidal power transformers are manufactured in RotelÊs own factory.
We all have concerns about our environment. And, as more and more
electronics are produced and later discarded, it is especially important for
a manufacturer to do all it can to engineer products that have a minimum
negative impact on landfill sites and water tables.
At Rotel, we are proud to do our part. We have reduced the lead content
in our electronics by using special ROHS solder, while our new Class D
(not digital) amplifiers are up to five times more efficient than our legacy
designs and still deliver power and performance. These products run cool,
give minimum wasted energy, are good for the environment and give better
sound too.
Finally, we have printed this manual on recycled paper stock.
While we understand that these are small first steps, they are still important
ones. And we continue to pursue new methods and materials for a cleaner
and greener manufacturing process.
All of us at Rotel thank you for buying this product. We are sure it will bring
you many years of enjoyment.
Getting Started
Thank you for purchasing the Rotel RC-1580MKII Stereo Control Amplifier.
When used in a high-quality music audio system, your Rotel product will
provide years of musical enjoyment.
The RC-1580MKII is a full featured, high performance component. All aspects
of the design have been optimized to retain the full dynamic range and subtle
nuances of your music. The RC-1580MKII has a highly regulated power
supply incorporating a Rotel custom-designed toroidal power transformer
and custom-made slit foil capacitors. This low impedance power supply has
ample power reserves, which enables the RC-1580MKII to easily reproduce
the most demanding audio signals. This type of design is more expensive
to manufacture, but it is better for the music.
The printed circuit boards (PCB) are designed with Symmetrical Circuit
Traces. This insures that the precise timing of the music is maintained and
faithfully recreated. The RC-1580MKII circuitry uses metal film resistors
and polystyrene or polypropylene capacitors in important signal paths.

English
All aspects of this design have been examined to ensure the most faithful
music reproduction.
The main functions of the RC-1580MKII are easy to install and use. If you
have experience with other stereo systems, you shouldnÊt find anything
perplexing. Simply plug in the associated components and enjoy.
A Few Precautions
WARNING: To avoid potential damage to your system, turn off ALL
the components in the system when connecting or disconnecting the
loudspeakers or any associated components. Do not turn the system
components back on until you are sure all the connections are correct
and secure. Pay particular attention to the speaker wires. There must
be no loose strands that could contact the other speaker wires, or the
chassis of the amplifier.
Please read this manual carefully. In addition to basic installation and operating
instructions, it provides valuable information on various RC-1580MKII system
configurations as well as general information that will help you get optimum
performance from your system. Please contact your authorized Rotel dealer
for answers to any questions you might have. In addition, all of us at Rotel
welcome your questions and comments.
Save the RC-1580MKII shipping carton and all enclosed packing material
for future use. Shipping or moving the RC-1580MKII in anything other than
the original packing material may result in severe damage to your amplifier.
If included in the box please fill out and send in the owner`s registration
card. Also be sure to keep the original sales receipt. It is your best record
of the date of purchase, which you will need in the event warranty service
is ever required.
Placement
Like all audio components that handle low-level signals, the RC-1580MKII
can be affected by its environment. Avoid placing the RC-1580MKII on top
of other components. Also avoid routing audio signal cables near power
cords. This will minimize the chance it will pick up hum or interference.
We recommend installing the RC-1580MKII in furniture designed to house
audio components. Such furniture is designed to reduce or suppress
vibration which can adversely affect sound quality. Ask your authorized
Rotel dealer for advice about component furniture and proper installation
of audio components.
The RC-1580MKII is supplied with an RR-AT98 remote control and must
be placed where the infrared signal from the remote can reach the front
panel Remote Sensor.
Cables
Be sure to keep the power cords, digital signal cables and regular audio
signal cables in your installation away from each other. This will minimize
the chance of the regular audio signal cables picking up noise or interference
from the power cords or digital cables. Using only high quality, shielded
cables will also help to prevent noise or interference from degrading the
sound quality of your system. If you have any questions see your authorized
Rotel dealer for advice about the best cable to use with your system.
The RR-AT98 Remote Control
Some functions can be done with either the front panel controls, or the
supplied RR-AT98 remote control. When these operations are described,
the square call out numbers refer to the main unit, while the encircled letters
refer to the remote control.
NOTE: The remote control can be used to operate the basic functions
of Rotel tuners and CD players. Remote control keys labeled FHI
can be used to operate CD or Tuner functions in your system. For the
remote to operate properly, make sure both the remote and the CD
or Tuner are both in same remote code. For more information please
contact your authorized Rotel dealer.
Remote Control Batteries
Two UM-4/AAA size batteries (supplied) must be installed before the remote
control can be used. To install the batteries, remove the cover on the back
of the RR-AT98. Install the batteries as shown in the illustration in the battery
well. Test the control for proper operation, then replace the cover. When the
batteries become weak the remote control wonÊt operate the RC-1580MKII
consistently. Installing fresh batteries should eliminate the problem.
AC Power and Control
AC Power Input
p
NOTE: Be sure to set the Volume control to the minimum (full
counterclockwise) position before connecting the power cord.
Your RC-1580MKII is configured at the factory for the proper AC line voltage
in the country where you purchased it (either 120 volts AC or 230 volts AC
with a line frequency of either 50 Hz or 60 Hz). The AC line configuration
is noted on a decal on the back panel.
NOTE: Should you move your unit to another country, it may be possible
to reconfigure it for use on a different line voltage. Do not attempt to
perform this conversion yourself. Opening the enclosure of the unit
exposes you to dangerous voltages. Consult a qualified service person
or the Rotel factory service department for information.
NOTE: Some products are intended for sale in more than one country
and as such are supplied with more than one AC cord. Please only use
the one appropriate for your country/region.
The RC-1580MKII should be plugged directly into a 2-pin polarized wall
outlet. Do not use an extension cord. A heavy duty multi-tap power outlet
strip may be used if it (and the wall outlet) is rated to handle the current
demanded by the RC-1580MKII and all the other components connected to it.
If you are going to be away from home for an extended period of time
such as a month long vacation, it is a sensible precaution to unplug the
RC-1580MKII (as well as other audio and video components) while you
are away.

56 will be illuminated.
When the STANDBY switch is pushed in, you can turn the RC-1580MKII
on, or put it in Standby mode, with the ON and OFF buttons Aof the RR-
AT98 remote control. Also, turn it on with the Listening input button when
the unit is in Standby mode.
If you will not be using the RC-1580MKII for a long period of time, press
the front panel STANDBY switch to turn it Off. The button will return to its
Out position and all the front panel indicator lights will turn off.
NOTE: Place the self adhesive ring over the light surrounding the power
switch if the blue light is too bright.
12V TRIGGER Connections
r
Some audio components can be turned on automatically when they receive
a 12V turn on „signal‰. The two 12V Trigger Outputs on the RC-1580MKII
provide the required signal. Connect compatible components to the RC-
1580MKII with a conventional 3.5mm mini mono plug cable. When the
RC-1580MKII is in standby mode, the trigger signal is disabled, so the
components controlled by it will be turned off.
NOTE: The number „1‰ 12V trigger signal is turned off when headphones
are plugged into the front panel headphone outlet. See the Phones Output
section.
Input Signal Connections
-=tyu
-=tyu
NOTE: To prevent loud noises that neither you nor your speakers will
appreciate, make sure the system is turned off when you make any
signal connections.
Phono Input Selector Switch
t
The Phono input is for a moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) phono
cartridge only and is incompatible with line level components. Set the Phono
Input Selector Switch as appropriate for the phono cartridge you are using.
Leave the switch button in the out position for a moving magnet cartridge;
push the switch in for a moving coil cartridge.
Some high output moving coil cartridges are designed to operate in the
moving magnet position. If you are in doubt about the correct setting, check
the instruction manual for your phono cartridge for information regarding
its output voltage and the expected input impedance. The Phono input has
47k Ohms input impedance and 2.5 mV sensitivity in the MM position and
100 Ohms input impedance and 0.25 mV sensitivity in the MC position. If
you still have questions about the proper setting of the phono input selector
switch, consult your authorized Rotel dealer.
Phono Input
y
and Ground Connection (GND)
-
See Figure 3
Plug the cable from the turntable into the appropriate left and right phono
inputs. If the turntable has a „ground‰ wire, connect it to the screw terminal
to the left of the Balanced inputs. This will help prevent hum and noise.
Line Level Inputs
u
See Figure 3
The CD, Tuner, and Aux inputs of the amplifier are analog „line level‰ inputs.
These inputs are for connecting components such as CD players or other
audio playback devices with an analog audio output.
The left and right channels are clearly labeled and should be connected to
the corresponding channels of the source component. The Left connectors
are white, the Right connectors are red. Use high quality RCA cables for
connecting input source components to the RC-1580MKII. Ask your authorized
Rotel dealer for advice about cables.
Balanced (XLR) Inputs
=
See Figure 4
A pair of balanced XLR inputs accept audio signals from CD player, Blu-ray
player or other source components with XLR outputs.
NOTE: You should choose only one method of analog connection from
a source component to RC-1580MKII. Do not connect both the RCA and
XLR outputs of a source component to the RC-1580MKII at the same time.
Recorder Connections
i
See Figure 3
Tape 1 input/outputs and Tape 2 outputs can be connected to any playback/
record device, Tape 2 inputs are reserved for Theater Bypass Mode, refer
to bypass section.
When connecting a recorder to the RC-1580MKII, remember that the outputs
of the recorder must be connected to the tape inputs of the RC-1580MKII.
Similarly the tape outputs of the RC-1580MKII must be connected to the
inputs of the recorder. As with other sources be sure to connect the Left and
Right channels of each device to the proper channels on the associated
components. Use high quality connecting cables to prevent loss of sound
quality.
Output Connections
qo
qo
Preamp Output
o
See Figure 3
The RC-1580MKII RCA-type output connectors are compatible with most
power amplifiers. As always, select high quality audio interconnect cables.
Connect the left and right channel outputs of the RC-1580MKII to the
corresponding inputs on the preamplifier or other component.

9
English
NOTE: There are two sets of RCA outputs on the RC-1580MKII. The
second set of outputs may be used in custom system configurations
to drive a second power amplifier or to supply a signal to a special
signal processor.
Balanced (XLR) Preamp Output
q
See Figure 4
A pair of XLR balanced connectors supplies an analog output signal from
the RC-1580MKII to a power amplifier with XLR balanced input connectors.
NOTE: Do not connect both the RCA and XLR to the same amplifier
at the same time.
Theater By-pass Mode
BYPASS indicator
2
The input marked Tape 2
i
has been set to provide a by-pass mode for
users requiring a unity gain stage through which they can use their surround
sound processor. This input will only function in a by-pass mode so do not
connect a tape recording unit to this input.
To use the By-pass mode, plug the front channel output of the surround sound
processor into the Tape 2 inputs. When the Tape 2 input
5
B is selected,
the signal from the processor is sent directly through the preamplifier and
by-passes the tone and volume functions. Once made a by-pass mode, the
BYPASS indicator of front panel is turned on.
Setting a system up this way provides a way to integrate a stereo amplifier
to be used as the front channels of a surround sound system. Only the Tape
2 input can provide the by-pass function. It requires no additional setup,
making it easy to switch between normal stereo mode and surround sound
mode by using the input selector.
NOTE: Rotel uses the same operating IR codes for all its audio products.
That means that in a situation where the operator will use a remote
control then it is recommended that the codes for the RR-AT98 and the
RC-1580MKII be changed.
To change the IR code of the RR-AT98, press the Phono button and
the 2 button at the same time.
To change the IR code of the RC-1580MKII, point the RR-AT98 at
the RC-1580MKII and press and hold the 2 button for 5 seconds. The
LED in the volume control will flash to indicate the IR code has changed.
ItÊs is probably easiest to choose a third party learning remote
control and teach the new source selection codes and those of the
surround sound processor in to it. Alternatively you can use the two
remote controls to operate the different systems.
NOTE: After changing the remote codes for the remote control and
the preamplifier as described above, the remote control will no longer
operate the Rotel tuners. To return the RR-AT98 IR code to the default
setting, press the Phono button and the 1 button at the same time. To
return the IR code of the RC-1580MKII to the default setting, point the
RR-AT98 at the RC-1580MKII and press and hold the 1 button for 5
seconds. The LED in the volume control will flash to indicate the IR code
has changed.
Headphone Output
7
The headphone output allows you to connect headphones for private listening.
This output accepts a standard 3.5mm (1/8‰) mini stereo headphone
connector. Plugging in a set of headphones does not cut off the signal to the
preamp outputs. In most instances you should turn off the power amplifier
when listening to headphones.
NOTE: Because the sensitivity of speakers and headphones can
vary widely, always reduce the volume level before connecting or
disconnecting headphones.
Remote Sensor
3
This remote sensor window receives IR commands from the remote control.
Please do not block this sensor.
Audio Controls
Volume Control
4
D
Turn the controls clockwise to increase the volume, or counter clockwise to
decrease the volume. From the remote control press the volume + or - key
to turn the volume up or down.
Mute Button C
Press the MUTE Cbutton on the remote once to turn the sound off. Press
the button again to restore previous volume levels. The LED in the volume
control will flash when the unit is muted.
NOTE: Pressing the volume buttons on the remote also cancels the muting
function.
Balance Control
0
The Balance Control adjusts the left-to-right balance of the sound output. The
factory default is the center position. In some situations, typically when the
main listening position is not ideally centered between the speakers, it may
be necessary to adjust the control to achieve proper left-to-right balance.
Turning the control counter-clockwise shifts the sound balance to the left.
Turning the control clockwise shifts the sound balance to the right.
Tone On/Off Switch
9
When the Tone Switch is in the Off (out) position the Bass and Treble Control
circuits are bypassed to ensure the purest possible sound. Leave the Tone
Switch in the Off position unless you want to use the Tone Controls. Push in
the Tone Switch if you want to adjust the Tone Controls.
Bass and Treble Controls
8
When the Tone Switch is pushed in, turning the Bass and Treble Controls
adjusts the tone balance of the sound. Turn the Controls clockwise to increase
the bass or treble output. Turn the Controls counterclockwise to decrease
the bass or treble output.
A properly setup high-performance audio system produces the most natural
sound with little or no adjustment of the tone controls. Use these controls
sparingly. Be particularly careful when turning the controls up as this
increases the power output in the bass or treble range, increasing the load
on the amplifier and speakers.

10 RC-1580MKII Stereo Control Amplifier
Listening Selector Buttons
5
B
Press one of the Listening Selector Buttons to select the input signals that
goes to the main outputs and to the power amplifier ăor, more simply,
which source is heard.
Recording Selector Buttons
6
J
Press one of the Recording Selector Buttons to select the input signal that goes
to the record outputs. When you are not recording, press the Off button. This
minimizes the chance of interference from other components in the system.
Having a separate Recording and Listening selector adds a significant degree
of flexibility in how you can use the RC-1580MKII. For example by selecting
CD with the Record Selector and selecting Tuner with the Listening Selector
you can record a CD onto a tape while listening to the tuner.
If you have a three-head recorder or a DAT recorder that allows simultaneous
read and write operation, you can monitor your recording by pressing the
TAPE 1 LISTENING button.
NOTE: The TAPE 2 input is a dedicated Theater By-Pass input. See the
information in the Theater Bypass Mode section on the preceding page.
RS232 Connector
w
The RC-1580MKII can be controlled via RS232 for integration with
automation systems. The RS232 input accepts a standard straight DB-9
Male-to-Female cable.
For additional information on the connections, software, and operating
codes for computer control of the RC-1580MKII, contact your authorized
Rotel dealer.
EXT REM IN Jack
e
This 3.5mm mini-jack receives command codes from industry-standard infrared
receivers via hard-wired connections. This feature could prove useful when
the unit is installed in a cabinet and the front-panel sensor is blocked. Consult
your authorized Rotel dealer for information on these external repeaters and
the proper wiring of a jack to fit the mini-jack receptacle.
Troubleshooting
Most difficulties in audio systems are the result of incorrect connections,
or improper control settings. If you encounter problems, isolate the area
of the difficulty, check the control settings, determine the cause of the fault
and make the necessary changes. If you are unable to get sound from the
RC-1580MKII, refer to the suggestions for the following conditions:
Standby Indicator Is Not Illuminated
The Standby Indicator ring around the Standby button should be illuminated
whenever the RC-1580MKII is plugged into the wall power outlet. If it does
not light, test the power outlet with another electrical device, such as a
lamp. Be sure the power outlet being used is not controlled by a switch
that has been turned off.
Fuse Replacement
If another electrical device works when plugged into the power outlet, but
the Standby Indicator still will not light when the RC-1580MKII is plugged
into the wall outlet, it indicates that the internal power fuse may have blown.
If you believe this has happened, contact your authorized Rotel dealer to
get the fuse replaced.
No Sound
Check the signal source to see if it is functioning properly. Make sure the

Bass(低音)和Treble(高音)控制
8
Tone(音调)开关被按下去时,调整Bass(重低音)和Treble(高音)控制
Listening(收听)选择按钮
5
B
Recording(录音)选择按钮
6
J
Off

Recording Off
6
收听CD键
5
Bypass LED
