Level calibration
The vial in the Starrett level is adjustable using the screws adja-
cent to the vial. It is possible to set for horizontal measurement
or to a deliberate incline.
Horizontal
Place the level on a reasonably flat surface. Note the position of
the bubble, reverse the level on the same surface. The level is
accurate when the bubble rests in the same position in both
directions. Do not overtighten screws during adjustment.
Incline
To set a 2% slope, place the unit on a level surface, note the bub-
ble should be centred between the lines. Measure 500mm from
one end of the level and raise the level 10mm at that point. Note
the bubble is at one end of the vial, adjust the screw that is fur-
thest from the bubble. Winding anticlockwise should centre the
bubble. You now have a 2% incline built into the level. To reset
to level, follow the setting instructions for horizontal use.
Laser alignment
The laser module is mounted in the centre of the spirit level cas-
ing. Alignment of the beam to the base of the level can be
checked by placing the level on a flat surface and marking the
spot where the laser beam hits a target. Turn the level upside
down; if correctly aligned, the laser will hit the same mark.
The laser unit is mounted internally on a spring suspension sys-
tem which allows for adjustment. Should adjustment be
required, turn the adjusting screw closest to the end of the level,
clockwise to raise the beam, or turn the second screw anti-
clockwise to raise the beam. To lower the beam follow the
above procedure but reverse rotation of screws. This procedure
allows for on-site calibration.
CAUTION: Do not overtighten screws.
Laser warning signs and placards
Warning signs are detailed in BS 5378: pt 1: 1980.
This is an example of a laser warning sign, usually yellow and
black on a white background. Warnings of this type should be
placed in vicinity of your work area.
