Overreaching can result in loss of balance.
■Use the product across the face of slopes, and never
up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing
direction on slopes.
■Do not use the product near drop-offs, ditches,
excessively steep slopes, or embankments. Poor
footing could cause a slip-and-fall accident.
■Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material
towards roads, public pavements, bystanders and
the like. Avoid discharging material against a wall or
obstruction, which may cause the material to ricochet
towards the operator.
WORK AREA SAFETY
■Never use product while people, especially children, or
pets are within 15 m because of the danger of objects
being thrown by contact with the blade.
■Objects struck by the lawn mower blade can cause
severe injuries to persons. Thoroughly inspect the area
where the product is to be used and remove all rocks,
sticks, metal, wire, bones, toys, or other foreign objects.
Remember, string or wire may entangle with the cutting
means.
■Always use the product in the daylight or in good
artificial light. The operator requires a clear view of the
work area to identify potential hazards.
■Do not operate the product in explosive atmospheres,
such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or
dust. The product creates sparks that may ignite the
dust or fumes.
■Do not operate the product on wet grass or in the rain.
■Do not use the product when there is a risk of lightning.
■Keep in mind that the operator or user is responsible
for accidents or hazards occurring to other people or
their property.

User Manual
2
■Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to
the presence of children. Children are often attracted to
the product and the mowing activity. Never assume that
children will remain where you last saw them.
■Keep children out of the mowing area and under the
watchful care of a responsible adult other than the
operator, be alert and turn the product off if a child
enters the area.
■Use extra care when approaching blind corners,
shrubs, trees, or other objects including overhanging
shrubs, which may block your view.
■Keep work area clean. Cluttered or dark areas invite
accidents.
LAWN MOWER SAFETY WARNINGS
■Before use, always visually inspect to ensure blades,
blade bolts, and cutter assembly are not worn or
damaged.
■Replace worn or damaged blades and bolts in sets to
preserve balance. Damaged blades and worn bolts are
major hazards.
■If the engine does not stop when the throttle lever is set
in “Stop” position, do not operate the product.
■Do not operate the product without the entire grass
catcher or the guard of the self-closing discharge
opening in place.
■The blade on the product is sharp. Use extreme caution
and wear heavy-duty gloves when fitting, replacing,
cleaning, or checking bolt security.
■Have the product serviced by an authorised service
centre to replace damaged or unreadable labels.
■Check all nuts, bolts, and screws at frequent intervals
for proper tightness to be sure that the product is in safe
working condition.
■Check the grass catcher frequently for wear, holes,
or deterioration. This can cause objects to be thrown
towards the operator.
■Replace worn or damaged parts before operating the
product.
■Turn on the engine carefully with the user behind the
handlebars in the operator safety zone. Never start the
product if:
●Not all four wheels are on the ground.
●The grass discharge chute is exposed and is not
protected by the grass box and grass discharge
chute cover.
●Hands and feet of all persons are not clear of the
cutting enclosure.
■Do not force the product. It will do the job better and
safer at the speed for which it was designed.
■Maintain a safe operating speed when using the
product; never run.
■Do not overload the product. Mowing long, thick grass
may cause the engine speed to drop or the power to cut
out. When mowing in long thick grass, set a high cutting
height on your first cut to help reduce the load.
■Stop the blade when crossing gravel surfaces.
■Do not pull back the product unless absolutely
necessary. If you must back the product away from a
wall or obstruction, first look down and behind to avoid
tripping or pulling the product over your feet.
■Stop the engine and allow the blade to stop if the
product has to be tilted for transportation when crossing
surfaces other than grass, and when transporting the
product to and from the area to be mowed.
■Never use the product with defective guards or shields,
or without safety devices, such as deflectors and/or
grass catchers, in place.
■Do not tilt the product when starting the engine or while
the engine is running. This exposes the blade and
increases the probability of objects being thrown.
■Turn on the engine carefully according to instructions,
and keep hands and feet away from the cutting area.
Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts.
Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times. Do not
start the product when standing in front of the discharge
opening.

dry, or locked-up place that is out of the reach of
children.
■Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper
operation and installation of accessories. Use only
accessories approved by the manufacturer.
■Do not operate the engine in a confined space where
dangerous carbon monoxide fumes can collect.
■Do not change the engine governor settings or over-
speed the engine.
■Turn off the product, and wait until the blade comes to
a complete stop. Allow the product to cool down, then
disconnect the spark plug wire:
●before leaving the product unattended (including
disposal of grass clippings).
●before clearing blockages or unclogging discharge
chute
●before checking, cleaning, or working on the
product
●before removing the grass catcher or opening the
grass discharge chute cover
●before refuelling
■If the product starts to vibrate abnormally, check
immediately to:

MOWING TIPS
■Make sure that the lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wires,
and other objects that could damage the lawn mower
blades or engine. Such objects could be accidentally
thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious
personal injury to the operator and others.
■For best performance, always cut off one-third or less of
the total height of the grass.
■When cutting long grass, reduce walking speed to allow
for more effective cutting and a proper discharge of the
clippings.
■Do not cut wet grass. It will stick to the underside of the
deck and prevent proper bagging or discharge of the
grass clippings.
■New or thick grass may require a narrower cut path.
■When the fuel tank is empty and before refuelling, tip
the mower on the left hand side with the fuel cap at
the highest position to prevent fuel spillage. Remove
the spark plug lead to prevent accidental starting. The
blade is sharp; avoid contact with it.
■Check the blade and underside of deck for any damage
or build up of debris, and clean if necessary. Check the
blade bolt and ensure that it is installed securely.

■Slopes are a major factor related to slip-and-fall
accidents that can result in severe injury. Operation on
slopes requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a
slope, do not mow it. For your safety, do not attempt to
mow slopes greater than 15 degrees.
■Mow across the face of slopes, never up and down.
Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on
slopes.
■Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps
which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide
obstacles. Remove all objects such as rocks, tree limbs,
which could be tripped over or thrown by the blade.
■Always be sure of your footing. A slip-and-fall accident
can cause serious personal injury.
■Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments;
you could lose your footing or balance.

1. Stop the product. Make sure that all moving parts have
come to a complete stop. Allow the product to cool
down. Disconnect the spark plug wire.
2. Turn the product on its side, carburettor (air lter side)
facing up.
NOTE: Make sure that the carburettor is facing up.
3. Wedge a block of wood between the blade disc and
mower deck to prevent the blade disc from turning.
4. Using a socket (not provided), loosen the disc bolt
by turning the bolt in a counterclockwise direction as
viewed from the bottom of the mower.
5. Remove the disc bolt, lock washer, flat washer, ellipse
washer, and blade disc.
NOTE: If any of the individual blades are dull, damaged,
or need replacing, they should be replaced using only
original equipment parts. If any single blade needs to
be replaced, then the complete set of four (4) blades
need to be replaced. Failure to replace the blades as a
set may result in an out of balance situation resulting in
damage to the engine.
6. Loosen the blade lock nuts on the old blades by turning
them counterclockwise.
7. Remove the blade lock nuts, washers, blades, wave
washers, and bolts from the blade disc.
8. Reassemble the new blades as shown in the
accompanying figure sheet. Ensure that the new blades
raised edges face towards the inside of the mower
deck once the disc is reinstalled to the mower. If the
blades are not assembled correctly, the grass will not
get directed to the rear of the deck (to be caught in the
catcher). Ensure that the wave washer is positioned
between the blade and the disc. Ensure that the lock
nuts are tightened (clockwise) over the flat washer and
disc, properly securing the blade to the disc.
NOTE: When attaching the blades on the blade disc,
tighten the blade bolt until it is securely fastened (the
nut should not move when the blade is moved). The
nut should then be tightened 1/6 of a turn (one flat).
Replace the blades as a complete set of four (4) to
maintain balance.
9. Assemble the blade disc, at washer, lock washer,
and disc bolt on the shaft. Finger tighten the disc bolt
by turning in a clockwise direction as viewed from the
bottom of the mower.
10. Torque the disc bolt using a torque wrench (not
provided) to ensure that the bolt is properly tightened.
The recommended torque for the disc bolt and blade
lock nut is 35–45 Nm (26–33 ft. lb.). After the bolt is
finger tight, it should be tightened a further 1¾ turns.
NOTE: When securing the blade disc, tighten the disc
bolt until the lock washer is completely flattened.
NOTE: Do not sharpen the blades, replace with new
item. Blades need to be properly balanced to avoid
damage and personal injury.
NOTE: Ensure that all parts are replaced in the exact
order in which they were removed.
CLEANING THE AIR FILTER
See Fig. 15.
The product has a paper air lter, and it cannot be washed.
1. Remove the air lter element cover by pushing the latch
with your thumb while gently pulling the cover.
2. Remove the paper air lter element for inspection.
3. After removing the air lter element, most debris can be
removed by tapping it gently against a hard surface, or
brushing the surface lightly.
NOTE: A dirty air filter element restricts air flow and may
result in damage to the engine. The life span of the air
filter element depends upon the environment in which
the product is used, and it should be inspected and
cleaned regularly and replaced when dirty. Replacement
air filter elements can be ordered through the Bunnings
special orders desk. The RYOBI part number for
Australia and New Zealand is 17150Z0301100000.
4. Reinstall the cleaned or new air lter element into the
air lter base.
5. Replace and secure the cover of the air lter element.
NOTE: The air filter element should be replaced
annually for best performance or sooner, if necessary.
FUEL CAP
WARNING
A leaking fuel cap is a re hazard and must be replaced
immediately.
The fuel cap contains a sealing gasket and a check valve
to allow air in.
A clogged fuel cap causes poor engine performance. If
performance improves when the fuel cap is loosened, the
check valve may be faulty or clogged. Replace the fuel cap
if required.
When retting the fuel cap, ensure that it is not cross-
threaded; otherwise it will leak.
CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL
See Fig. 16.
1. Stop the product. Make sure that all moving parts have
come to a complete stop. Allow the product to cool
down. Disconnect the spark plug wire.
2. Ensure that the fuel tank is completely empty before
tipping the unit over; otherwise, fuel will leak out.
3. Change the engine oil after every 20 hours of use.
Change the oil while the engine oil is still warm, but not
hot to allow the oil to drain quickly and completely.
4. Remove the oil ll cap/dipstick.
5. Tip the mower onto its side, and allow the oil to drain
from the oil ll hole into an approved container.
6. Place the mower upright, and rell with oil following the
instructions in the “Adding/Checking Oil” section.
NOTE: Dispose of used oil at an approved disposal
site. See your local oil retailer for more information.

the throttle lever is
pushed all the way
down.)
There is no petrol or old petrol is in
the fuel tank.
Fill the mower with fresh petrol. (See page 6.)
The fuel tap is in the “close“ position. Set fuel tap to the “open“ position. (Refer to the Figure
Sheet)
The primer bulb was not pressed. Firmly push and slowly release the primer bulb at least
3 times.
The engine is ooded. Wait for 5 minutes, then try starting the mower again.
(Refer to the “Starting/stopping the mower“ section)
No spark. Check for sparks. Remove the spark plug. Reattach the
spark plug cap and lay spark plug on the metal cylinder.
Pull the starter grip and watch for sparks at the spark plug
tip. If there is no spark, repeat the test with a new spark
plug. (See page 10.)
The starter grip is difficult to pull and
may be stuck.
Contact an authorised service centre.
The engine starts
but does not run
properly.
The carburettor requires adjustment. Contact an authorised service centre.
The engine starts
but stops soon after
starting.
The carburettor requires adjustment. Contact an authorised service centre.
The engine does not
reach full speed and/
or emits excessive
smoke.
The air lter is dirty. Clean the air lter. (Refer to the “Cleaning the air lter“
section)
The carburettor requires adjustment. Contact an authorised service centre.
The engine runs but

The cut grass is not
entering the grass
catcher.
The mulching plug is inserted. Remove the mulching plug when using the grass catcher.
The cutting height is set too low. Raise the cutting height. Cutting very wet grass at a low
cutting height will also greatly hinder the ability of the
mower to throw the grass to the catcher. We recommend
cutting the grass when it is not as wet.
The grass catcher is full. Empty the grass catcher to allow newly cut grass clippings
to enter.
