1 THE SA-ACU MODULE
The SA-ACU module is installed into the SA-R shelf and is used for the following:
•connection of the shelf to external visual and sound alarm control units which inform an
operator about alarm conditions while operating different devices;
•connection of the devices, installed into the shelf, to the external clock source of a 2048
kHz frequency;
•connection of shelves and external devices via the RS485 interface at the centralized
management;
•replacement of the “Monitor” socket onto the front panel;
•indication of power feeding circuits of the shelf.

The front panel of the module contains:
•four LEDs, indicating the operating conditions of the power feeding circuits and the
presence of the external clock signal;
•the “2048 kHz IN” socket for the connection of the external clock source;
•the “RS485” socket for the centralized control of external devices via the RS485
interface;
•the “MONITOR” socket for the connection of the shelf to a computer while controlling and
configuring devices;
•the “Alarm relays” socket for the connection of external alarm signaling units.

Fig. 3.2 Layout of jumpers and sockets
Jumpers J1, J2, J14 are set for debugging purposes. The normal condition is “closed”.
Jumpers J2, J4, J5 are used to set the address of the shelf at the centralized control
management via the SA-CMU module. The user’s guide for the SA-CMU module describes
in detail the methods for the determination of the shelf address. The normal condition is
“open”.
When necessary, jumpers J6 and 7 are used to set the matching impedance of 120 Ohm for
the correct connection of devices over the RS485 interface.

3.3 Control and configuration of the modules
To implement the current control and management of devices, the SA-R-XXX shelf is
connected to a computer with the help of a cable via the “Monitor” socket.
The program of the VT100 terminal emulation must be launched. The communication
parameters should be tuned as follows:
•rate: 9600 bauds, asynchronous;
•number of bits: 8, without parity, 1 stop-bit;
•flow control: XON/XOFF;
•automatic carriage return to a new line is disabled.
The SA-ACU-SR module converts RS232 signal levels relative to the level of the common
TTL bus, which is on the shelf’s rear panel.
At any one time only one device in the shelf can be logically connected to a computer. The
device is chosen in accordance with its slot number in the shelf, starting with the left slot 1.
Some devices (for example, a dual modem) can contain more than one addressing device.
The addressing to the next device in the shelf is implemented by adding number 12.
To see a device in the shelf, type “ECHO<Enter>”. Each device in each shelf will send its
address. The response is represented as follows: «%01 %13 %08 %10 %11 %12».
To start the logical connection with the device, type the «%ХХ<Enter>» command, where ХХ
is the device address, consisting of two figures. The termination of the logical connection
occurs while choosing another device, implementing the “ECHO” or “Exit” commands in the
device control menu.
Note: The control of the devices is implemented with the XON/XOFF flow control
protocol. It is recommended to start each session by pressing Ctrl-Q (XON) to
enable the communication with the devices with XOFF settings.
Note: When installing the SA-ACU module into the shelf, the control through the
“MONITOR” socket on the rear side of the shelf becomes impossible.
3.4 Alarm relays
The front panel of each device has LEDs indicating its condition. Each device has signal
outputs connected to the common signal bus of the shelf. The SA-ACU-SR module has two
relays and control circuits of their condition for the connection of the common bus to external
voice and visual alarm signaling units. Each relay (of urgent and non-urgent alarm) has
normally closed and normally opens contacts, which allow to use different connecting
schemes of the external alarm signaling. At an urgent or non-urgent alarm on any of the
cards in the shelf, there occurs a locking of the corresponding relay.

Switzerland WEB: www.s-access.ch
Under normal power conditions, the device (itself) controls the alarm/signal outputs of the
relay. In case of a power failure on the device, both “urgent” and “non-urgent” alarms will be
activated.
Alarm conditions
Urgent alarm:
•at least one of the devices displays urgent alarm;
•power failure of any of the devices;
•power failure of the auxiliary +5Vdc supply in the SA-R shelf;
•Power failure of one of the –48Vdc supplies.
Non-urgent alarm:
•at least one of the devices displays non-urgent alarm;
•power failure of any of the devices;
•power failure of the auxiliary +5Vdc supply in the SA-R shelf;
•power failure of one of the –48Vdc supplies.
Note: The devices of the universal AccessGain platform can have “alarm cut off”
commands. If alarm cut off is activated, the alarm relays are disabled.
3.5 Connection of the shelf to the clock source
The universal AccessGain platform has a possibility of synchronization of signals transmitted
from the external clock source. The SA-ACU-SR module contains a unit designed to receive
and process (supervise) clock impulses at a frequency of 2048 kHz. The socket for the
connection of the external clock source is of a 75-Ohm BNC type.
The incoming clock impulses are converted up to the TTL level and transmitted through the
rear panel to the central clock oscillator of each device.
The clock input accepts a 2048 kHz signal with a peak voltage range from 375 mVp-p to 3 Vp-
p. This allows to establish a connection between transmit and receive clocks according to
ITU-T Recommendation G.703.10.
3.6 Connection of external devices over the RS485 interface
The RS485 interface is used to connect devices installed into shelves or external devices to
the SA-ACU-SR module installed in one of the shelves.
Note: The bus of the RS485 interface requires the 120 Ohm terminal resistance,
therefore, a terminator must be installed on the data terminal devices connected in
circuits. The terminator on the SA-ACU-SR module is set by J6, J7 jumpers.

3.7 Power failure alarm
The front panel of the SA-ACU-SR module displays the status of the shelf power feeding.
The A and B “–48Vdc” LEDs inform an operator about the status of primary and auxiliary
power feeding circuits, respectively. In normal condition the LEDs are green, while in case of
a power supply failure, the LEDs will be extinguished.
