Background
Introduction
These notes cover some basic information on how to set up and use your Samsung
GT-N8010 Galaxy Note 10.1 16GB tablet. This material has been prepared by the
Waikato Management School (WMS) IT Team at the
University of Waikato.
These instructions and exercises are designed for
participants enrolled in the School’s Centre for Corporate
& Executive Education 2013 programmes. The emphasis
is on the tablet’s most useful features in an e-learning
environment.
Before you attend the orientation session for your
programme, you need to:
•activate your University of Waikato student username and password
(see page 5),
•log onto LightWire with your University of Waikato student email account
•Check that you have your 1.5GB free internet allocation.
(see page 5),
•set up your tablet.

Google and Android
Android is Google’s open source operating system and software platform. “Open
source” means that the software is free and that developers can play around with
the code and change it.
Android devices come with a range of built-in programs (called applications, or
apps) such as a web browser, email client, calendar and maps. In addition, you can
download a huge variety of apps to your tablet from the Android market, known as
Google Play. The University uses Google Apps (email, calendar, contacts and task
applications). These apps work well on Android devices.
About tablets
Tablet devices are mobile computers with a flat touch screen display. Internet
connectivity is provided via 3G or wireless access. Files such as documents,
spreadsheets and images can be transferred to and from your tablet. The device is
very portable; you can access your email, calendar and important documents..
Keep in mind, however, that tablets are primarily designed for mobility and to
display content rather than create it. When you need to create or substantially edit
large documents or use software with highly sophisticated drawing or graphics
capabilities, it is recommended that you use a desktop PC or laptop.
Why the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet?
The top-end tablets all have similar technical specifications. Our choices (in
December 2012) were based on the most useful features in an e-learning
environment. It is likely your tablet will be used for reading, highlighting and
annotating PDF files, so the pen/stylus that comes with the Samsung tablet was
appealing.
The note-taking app (S Note) gives you the ability to create free-hand notes and
draw diagrams. See page 13 for more details.
Please note that this tablet is WiFi only (not 3G), i.e. it will just connect to a local
wireless network.
At the time of writing, the tablet’s operating system is Android 4.04 (Ice-cream
Sandwich). An upgrade to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) is imminent.
To check whether the update is available, go to the Settings, About device,
Software update, and follow the instructions on the screen.

To begin – on a desktop or laptop computer…
Some things are just easier to do on a real computer. We suggest you complete
the steps in this section on a laptop or desktop computer.
Create a Google account
To set up a personal Google/Gmail account:
•Go to http://mail.google.com
•Select the Create an Account button and
complete the details.
If you already have a personal Google/Gmail account, you can use that to set up
your tablet. Do not use your University of Waikato (staff or student) Gmail account
to set up the tablet; not all Google services are available on your University of
Waikato account.
Set up your University of Waikato student account
Enable your University of Waikato student account by completing the following
steps:
•Make sure you have your student ID card.
•Go MyWeb™ www.myweb.ac.nz
•Select the First Time User link to go to https://tools.its.waikato.ac.nz/cgi-
bin/newuser/newuser
•Follow the instructions to find out your username and set a password.
•Go back to the MyWeb™ www.myweb.ac.nz, log in and check your
username and password.
Lightwire access
•Internet access for all students on campus is via Lightwire. You have free
access to University web pages and some other resources. You also receive
1.5GB of free data per month (on a use-it or lose-it basis) and can purchase
additional top-ups at $5 per GB at http://www.lightwire.co.nz/
You need to:
•When asked, log into Lightwire with your University of Waikato student
email account ([e-mail]).
•You will automatically get your free 1.5GB monthly allowance.
On campus, you can use the internet on desktop computers or via the wireless
network on your laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Setting up your tablet
A wireless internet (Wi-Fi) connection is needed to set up your tablet and sign into
your Google account.
1. Turn on the tablet.
2. Follow the instructions on the tablet. You will be asked to:
•Choose a language (then press Start).
•Connect to wi-fi network (enter the details, then press Next).
•Set the date and time.
•Create a Samsung account (unless you already have one).
•Choose restore and back up or ignore and choose Next
•Sign in with your own Gmail account i.e. your non-University
Google account.
•Join Google + (if you want).
•Choose from the backup and restore options, then press Next
•Allow location (if you want), then press Next).
•Put in the "This tablet belongs to details", and press Next
•Dropbox - add in details if you have used Dropbox before or create
an account.
Eventually, you will get to following screen.

The Basics
Navigation
Overview
You start with five “Home screens” on your tablet. You can “swipe” horizontally
(with your finger or the stylus) from one screen to another. The icons on your five
home screens are shortcuts to applications and other features. Tap (short-press) an
icon to open an application.
The main navigation options (on the lower-left) of the screen are Back, Home, and
Recent applications. You can use the Recent applications icon to go to an app, or
to close apps.
Pressing and long-pressing
Pressing briefly (a “short-press”) on an icon or part of the screen performs an
action. A “long-press” on an item will give you additional options, similar to right-
clicking in a Windows environment. For example, long-pressing on:
•an icon on the home screen—allows you to drag it to a new position, or
remove the icon altogether.
•an empty area of the home screen—puts you into a “customisation” screen
where you can add apps and widgets, create a folder, change the wallpaper
and more.
•a web address in a browser—lets you copy the address, or share the link in
various ways.

an item—you get a
menu of options to

Pinch to zoom
In many situations, you can use two fingertips to “pinch” and “unpinch”
(or spread) to zoom in and out of an image, document or web page.
Place your thumb and forefinger on the screen—spread them apart to
magnify, and bring them together in a “pinching” motion to contract or
reduce the size.
Become familiar with the tablet’s settings
Select the Android settings icon. The Android Settings screen opens. Work your
way through the menus, changing any of the options to suit.
Setting up email
You can either add all your email accounts to the one generic app, or you can use
individual apps (e.g. the Gmail app) for each type of account. To add an email
account to the generic email app, complete the following steps:
1. Press the All applications icon at the top-right-hand
corner of the screen.
2. Press the Email icon.
3. Follow the instructions to add an email account.
Applications
Overview
You can access all of the applications on your tablet via the application icon near
top-right of your main home screen.
Go through the list of applications and see which ones might be useful. To add a
shortcut (on the Home screen) to an app:
1. Long-press on an application icon.
2. Drag the icon to a location on the Home screen.
3. A shortcut is created.
•Recommended app shortcuts for your Home screen, include
Download, Settings, Email or Gmail, and Play Store
To remove a shortcut from the Home screen, press and hold the icon and drag it to
the Trash can area near the top right-hand corner of the screen.
Installing new applications
Android devices have their own “shop” (called Google Play) where you can
download free and paid applications. To find new apps, select the Play Store
icon on your device or go to http://play.google.com/
You can search for apps by keyword, or go through the categories. You can
browse by free or paid apps, or by popularity.

As an example, search for the NZ Herald app (within the Play Store on the tablet),
download and install it.
Complete the following steps:
1. Press the Play Store icon.
2. Press the Search icon near the top-right-hand corner of the
screen.
3. The on-screen keyboard appears.
4. Type in NZ Herald and press the Search key.
5. Under the Apps heading, you should see the NZ Herald News app.
6. Press on the icon.
7. Press the Install button.
8. Press the Accept & download button.
9. The app will be downloaded.
10. The icon may appear on a new screen or page. Drag it to a suitable
location.
Free apps
When you find an application that you want, follow the prompts on your device (as
you did above) and the app will be downloaded and installed.
Paid apps
To pay for an application, you need to have a Google Checkout account with your
Google email account. The first time you try downloading a paid app, follow the
instructions on the screen. The cost of the app is billed to your credit card. Most
downloads can be returned for a full refund within 15 minutes of purchase. Your
purchased apps are tied to your Google Account and can be installed an unlimited
number of times on any Android device.
Recommended apps
Apps you find useful will, of course, will depend on your interests. For now,
practice by installing the ES File Explorer File Manager and the Adobe Reader
apps–both are free.
Check the details of an app before you download and install it to make sure it is
suitable for your tablet and its operating system. The app developers usually give
some details (e.g. suitable for Android 2.1 up to 4.x). Also, the user reviews often
indicate if there are problems or issues with the app on a particular device. Ensure
that the details about the app and the company do not set off any alarm bells—see

Updating apps
Many apps are updated on a regular basis. The updates provide new features and
bug fixes. When updates are available, you will see an indication in the
Notifications area at the bottom-right of the screen. To update apps:
1. Go to Google Play
2. Press the My Apps button near the top-right-hand corner
of the screen.
3. A list of updates appears.
4. You can choose to update each app individually, or to update them all
at once.
Deleting apps
If you no longer want a particular app on your tablet, you can delete it. To delete
an app, complete the following steps:
1. Press the Settings icon.
2. The Android Settings screen opens.
3. Under the Device heading, choose Applications manager
4. Select the unwanted app and choose Uninstall
Copying files to and from your tablet
You have several options when moving files to and from your tablet.
USB connection
Use connector that came with your tablet.
To copy files to and from the built-in memory and/or an SD card in your device:
•Connect the tablet to your computer using the USB cable.
•Your computer should immediately recognize the tablet—follow any
instructions that appear on the tablet or the computer.
•If the tablet does not appear, go to My Computer or Computer (on
Windows machines) and look for it under the Removable Storage or
Portable Devices heading.
Email attachment
To save an email attachment to your tablet, from within the (Gmail app) mail
message:
•Select the View button.
•Choose one of the apps listed.
•The file should open. You can save the file from within the application. See
the tip on the next page to find “lost” files. 

Downloading a file from a web site
In a web page:
•Select the link to the PDF (or other) file.
•You may be asked to complete the action using one of the installed apps.
Choose an app—the file will open.
•Alternatively, when the file has downloaded, a small downward-
pointing arrow appears at the bottom of the screen.Select the
arrow, and then choose an app to open the file.
•See the tip on the right to find “lost” files. 
Dropbox
Dropbox is a cloud service that allows you to access files from
anywhere. A computer or device with a “My Dropbox” folder or app
has everything backed up and synchronised to the Dropbox.com
server. See the video at http://www.dropbox.com/ for a quick
overview. There are many services similar to Dropbox. Do carefully consider
whether these third-party providers are suitable repositories for any sensitive
documents.
To start using Dropbox:
1. Create a Dropbox account (if you don’t already have one).
2. Install the Dropbox program (or app) on the PCs (or devices) you use
regularly.
•Copy some files into the Dropbox folder.
3. On your tablet, download the Dropbox app from Google Play.
4. Open the Dropbox app and sign in with your Dropbox login.
5. Any files you have stored “in the cloud” can be downloaded to your
tablet.
Viewing your Dropbox files
1. Open the Dropbox app on your tablet.
2. You should see your files.
3. Tap on a file to select it.
4. You may be asked to complete the action using one of the installed
apps.
5. Select an app. The file will open in your chosen app.
Sending files to Dropbox
You can send files to your Dropbox from within some apps. A few examples are
shown below.

FROM WITHIN THE ADOBE READER APP:
1. Open a file.
2. Press the Sharing icon.
3. A list of apps appears.
4. Select Dropbox
5. Choose a location (if you have set up folders in your Dropbox).
6. Press the Upload button.
7. The file is uploaded to your Dropbox and is available from any
computer or device where you have Dropbox installed.
FROM WITHIN THE GALLERY APP:
1. Open an image.
2. Press the Sharing icon.
3. A list of apps appears.
4. Select Dropbox
5. Choose a location (if you have set up folders in your Dropbox).
6. Press the Upload button.
7. The file is uploaded to your Dropbox and is available from any
computer or device where you have Dropbox installed.
Downloading zipped files
You can download and open zipped files (from the web) using the tablet, as long as
your file management app can cope with zipped files. ES File Explorer File
Manager can open zipped files.
To download and open zipped files from MyWeb™ (using ES File Explorer),
complete the following steps.
1. In the web browser, navigate to the zipped file. In most of your papers,
it will be under the Files link.
2. Select the Download icon.
3. The zipped file downloads—you will see an arrow appear near the
bottom of the screen.
4. Open the ES File Explorer File Manager app.
5. Select the Favorites button, then the Downloads icon.
6. Select the zipped file. A folder appears. Select the folder—you should
see the individual files.
7. Select a file.
8. Choose an app to view the file.
9. The file opens.
WHAT IS A ZIPPED
FILE?
A zipped file contains
one or more files that
have been
compressed. The
compression results in
a smaller file that
downloads faster and
takes up less space.
Zipped files need to be
“unzipped” before the
contents can be read.
SET THE OWNER INFO
Consider adding your
details, including
contact details, to your

Settings, Security,

Other features
S Note
To use the quick note pad, press the S Pen button, and double-tap the screen to
open the quick note pad. Or, press the S Note icon to open the app.
The GALAXY Note 10.1 User’s Digest (see page 6) has a comprehensive section
on the S Note’s features.
Keyboard options
There are three keyboard layouts to choose from; the standard “QUERTY” layout, a
“split” keyboard (for thumb typists) and a floating keyboard. “Pinch in” with two
fingers (while in a keyboard screen) to choose from the options.
Multiscreen features
The multiscreen feature splits the screen into two parts and runs two different
applications. For example, you can view a web page and take notes on the S-Note
app. At the time of writing, this feature works with six of the built-in apps. These
are the Web browser (not Chrome), the email app (not Gmail), Gallery, Video Player,
S Note, and Polaris Office.
Samsung’s mini app tray is similar. You can open small “floating window” versions
of apps such as the calculator and calendar. Simply press the mini apps button
(bottom middle of the screen) and choose an app.

Tips and tricks
Organising Home screens
To keep things organised, put the apps you use most often on the first or second
screen.
Creating folders
You can group related apps in a folder. For example, to create a folder:
1. Long-press on an empty part of a home screen.
2. Choose Folder from the list that appears.
3. A folder is created.
4. Tap the folder and give it a name.
Drag icons to move them into your new folder. A few points:
•Yes, you can drag an app out of a folder.
•Yes, you can re-arrange the icons within a folder.
•No, you can’t create subfolders within folders.
•Yes, you can delete a folder. Simply long-press on it and drag it to
the trash can in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
Adding folder shortcuts to the Home screen
A good file manager (such as the ES File Explorer File Manager application) is
very useful. We suggest that you create a “Documents” folder (call it “My stuff” or
“MBA” or something that makes sense to you) on your tablet, and create subfolders
within that Documents folder to organise your files. You can set that Documents
folder as your “Home” directory within the file manager application.
You can create a shortcut to any particular folder to the tablet home screen. To do
this (using the ES File Explorer app as an example), complete the following steps:
1. Navigate to the folder that you want to add to the Home screen.
2. Long-press on the folder. A list of options appears.
3. Choose Shortcut
4. Go back to the Home screen. You should see an icon representing the
folder—it may be on an adjacent screen.
5. You can move this icon to an appropriate place.
Adding file shortcuts to the Home screen
You can create a shortcut to any particular file to the tablet Home screen. To do
this (using the ES File Explorer app as an example), complete the following steps:
1. Navigate to the file that you want to add to the Home screen.
2. Long-press on the folder. A list of options appears.
3. Choose Shortcut

4. Go back to the Home screen. You should see an icon representing the
folder—it may be on an adjacent screen.
5. You can move this icon to an appropriate place.
Adding web shortcuts to the Home screen
Complete the following steps to add a shortcut to a website to the Home screen.
1. Go to the website (for example www.myweb.ac.nz
2. Press the “star” (Bookmark) icon near the top right-hand corner of the
screen. A “Bookmark this page” dialog box appears.
3. Edit the label if appropriate, then select OK
4. The “star” icon should now be yellow.
5. Go to your bookmarks by selecting the small (Bookmarks)
icon near the top right of the screen.
6. Long-press on the bookmark you just created.
7. Choose Add shortcut to home from the options that appear.
8. Go back to the Home screen.
9. You should see an icon representing the website. You can move this
shortcut to an appropriate place on your Home screen, or add it to a
folder.
Copying and pasting text
You can easily copy and paste text from one location to another. To select text in a
web page, email, document etc., simply long-press on a particular word. Two tags
appear on each side of the word. Drag the tags to make your selection. You
should see an "action bar" near the top of the screen, or, in some apps, options
may appear just above your selection. Choose Copy Move to the app, email
message, or wherever you want the text. Long-press and choose Paste
“Sharing” things
Often, “sharing” can be quicker than copying and pasting text, web addresses etc.
For example, to send yourself (or someone else) the URL of a useful web page via
email, complete the following steps:
1. In the browser, long-press on the URL.
2. Select Share
•If you “short-pressed”, select the menu icon and choose Share
page
3. Choose Gmail
4. Enter an address and any other details and select Send
You can also use sharing to enter text from a web page into an email message, or
to copy a file from one location to another.

Reading a web page offline
You can save web pages to read later when you may not have internet access. To
do this:
1. In the browser, select the menu icon.
2. Choose Save for offline reading from the menu.
3. The page is saved.
To access the pages you have saved:
1. In the browser, select the bookmark icon.
2. Choose the Saved pages tab at the top of the
screen.
3. Select the page you want to read.
Taking a “screenshot”
To capture the tablet’s screen as an image:
1. Press the Screenshot icon near the bottom-left of the
screen.
•Note: this icon can be set to other actions.
2. The screen “flashes” and the image is captured.
To view your screenshot, open the Gallery app. The screenshots are in the
Screenshots album.
Task Manager
Your tablet can run more than one application at the same time. However, if you
have a lot of apps open the tablet may run slowly, or use up the battery quite
quickly. You can close applications via the Task Manager.
1. Press the Recent apps/Task Manager icon near the bottom-left of
the screen.
•“Slide” an app to the left to remove it.
2. Select Task manager (or Remove all if you want to close all the active
applications.)
3. Press End to close an application (or End all if you want to close all
active applications.)
Working with MP3s
If you short-press on a link (in the web browser) to an MP3 file a “Select an action”
dialog box appears. Choose Android system A “complete action using” Select an
app to play the MP3.
If you long-press on the MP3 link, you get a different set of options.
•Open will present you with a choice of apps that can be used to open the
MP3 file–just like the “short-press” action above.

•The Save link option will start the process of downloading the file. When
the file has downloaded, you will find it in your Downloads folder. Select
the file. A “Complete action using” dialog box appears. Choose an app to
open the file.
Adding another account
Adding additional Google (or other) accounts to your tablet gives you access to all
your information in the one place. To add your university student Google account
(or any other account) to the tablet:
•Select the Settings icon.
•Under Personal, choose Accounts and sync
•Select Add account (from the top right-hand corner of the screen).
•Select Google (or another account type).
•Your university student email address
is [e-mail]
•Enter the details and select Sign in
•Choose which data you want to synchronise and select Done
Now, when you go into your Gmail etc., you can swap between Google accounts or
use other applications to access information from other accounts.
Working with MS Office documents
Polaris Office is available on your tablet. It copes with Microsoft Word, Excel and
PowerPoint files. You can create a new document, spreadsheet, or presentation or
open and edit an existing one. Polaris will also open PDF files. If you have a lot of
editing to do, however, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer.
Other apps that can read and edit MS Office files include DocumentsToGo, and
Quickoffice Pro.

An example of how your tablet could be set up is shown overleaf. All the apps etc.
are on one screen.
Note:
•the grouping of related apps, (e.g. reading and news apps)
•folders containing apps and bookmarks (e.g. Bookmarks, Kid’s apps and
Games),
•web shortcuts (e.g. LibraryThing, Workflowy and NBR),
•the shortcut to a particular folder (Books etc) on the tablet, and
•a link to an individual file (Longitude, by Dava Sobel, a book I am reading).

Working with PDF files
Introduction
Many of the documents for your course readings will be PDF (Portable Document
Format) files. You can read and annotate (i.e. highlight text, add notes, drawings
and bookmarks) your PDF files on the tablet.
Not all PDF documents are created in the same way. Some are scanned in as large
images; others have various sorts of protection on them. Some files have Optical
Character Recognition (OCR) so you can search the text and highlight it. Scanned
PDFs (that have not been OCRed) only have the bookmark, drawing and notes
annotation tools available. These PDFs are basically image files—the text is not
recognised as text, so therefore cannot be highlighted, searched or “reflowed”
within an app.
Downloading a PDF file
Download a PDF file for testing and experiment with the various PDF readers.
1. Go to http://www.laurierking.com/etcetera/the-mary-russell-

2. Select the Click here to download the Companion in PDF link.
3. A Starting Download message shows and a small downward-pointing
arrow appears at the bottom-right of the tablet screen.
4. All the files you have downloaded can be found in the Downloads
folder. It is a good idea to make a shortcut to the Downloads folder on
your Home screen—see page 8 for details.
Opening a PDF file
Locate a PDF file you have downloaded. To open the file:
1. Short-press on the file name.
2. A “Complete action using” dialog box appears.
3. Choose an app.
4. The file opens.
•Once you have tried a few PDF reader apps,
and found one you like, you can choose to
automatically open PDF files in that app.
Select the Set as default checkbox, then
choose the app you want to use.
•If you no longer want that default action to
occur, go to Settings, Applications
manager, and select the application. Under
Launch by default choose Clear defaults

Adobe Reader (free)
Overview
The Abobe Reader is free, and has annotation and commenting
features. The tools available include highlight, strikethough, underline,
freehand drawing and comments.
Downloading the app
To download the Adobe Reader:
1. Go to Google Play Store and search for the Adobe Reader
1. Select the app, and then choose Install
2. Choose Accept & download
3. The app will download and install on your tablet.
4. Go back to the Home screen. You should see an icon representing the
app. You can move this icon to an appropriate place.
If you don’t see the Adobe Reader icon, go to the application icon near top-right of
your Home screen. Long-press the Adobe Reader icon and drag it to one of your
Home screens.
Basic navigation
When you open the Adobe Reader app for the first time, a short “tutorial”
document appears. The main navigation tips are listed below.
•To “turn the page” swipe up or down (when in “Continuous” mode). If you
are in “Single page” mode, swipe left or right to change pages. Or simply
tap the right or left edge of the document.
•You can use two fingertips to “pinch” and “unpinch” (or spread) to zoom in
and out of the document.
•Tap once in the middle of the screen (avoiding any links or annotations) to
show the toolbars.
•If a PDF document has five or more pages, a navigation slider appears at
the bottom of the screen. Tap the middle of the screen to view the slider if
it is not visable.
•Double-tap the in the middle of the screen to zoom in or out.
•Select a hyperlink in the document by tapping on it. Internal hyperlinks will
go to another part of the document; external links take you to the relevant
web site.
