Technical Safety Information
for the User
This description contains the necessary information for the designated
use of the product described herein. It is intended for technically
qualied personnel.
Qualied personnel are persons who, because of their education,
experience and training as well as their knowledge of relevant standards,
specications, accident-prevention regulations and operating conditions,
have been authorized by persons responsible for system safety to execute
the necessary activities, and can recognize and avoid possible dangers in
such activities.

1 Hazard Information
The following information is for the personal safety of operating personnel
as well as the safety of the described product.
Hand injury warning
Never grab hold of anything inside openings during operation.
Noncompliance can lead to serious injury.
In case of emergency, press emergency off button!
This will shut down the machine immediately and will result in a power
failure sequence.
To disconnect the BWTC from the mains supply, remove the power cord
from the machine.
Remove power cord before cleaning.
Never open up the device!
Electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD)
Ground straps, table mats and tools with conducting grips are used to
ground people, to achieve equipotential welding and to prevent
electrostatic discharge. This is always a requisite measure if electronics or
electronic components are handled or mounted.
Make sure that rotating tubes do not pose a safety risk during the
welding process.
Follow the accident-prevention and safety regulations relating to the
specific application.
Ground conductor connections must function perfectly.
The device is not intended for use in/with explosive atmospheres.
A discontinuity during the critical section of the welding process can result
in damage and is to be absolutely avoided. The device will attempt to limit
the damage. It is imperative that you follow the operating instructions.
Read the corresponding Chapter 7.2.2 Abort in the critical section
In case of damage, have the device cleaned and examined by an
authorized specialist.
The device must be decontaminated before being sent to suppliers
or manufacturers.
The surface in this area can have very high temperatures.
Skin contact can result in burns|injury.
Avoid direct contact with skin in this area and wear corresponding
protective clothing|equipment.
Always use the blade remover tool (accessory) to remove the blade.

Hazard Information
Before start-up checkwhether the rated voltage of the device coincides
with the local line voltage.
The device was developed for laboratory use and must be protected from
every type of fluid orvapour.
The device can be operated between +5°C and +40°C.
The welding parameters are qualified for room temperature (20°C–25°C)
operation only.
Optimal relative humidity is 60%.
The device is programmed with standard parameter sets forwelding
C-Flex®374, AdvantaFlex®, PharMed®BPT and SaniPure™BDF™.
These parameter sets have been validated at ambiant temperature.
The degree of protection is IP20.
Make sure that the device is not switched off during the welding process.
Ensure that there is an uninterrupted power supply (UPS).
Use only the blades provided by the manufacturer and use it only once.
Use only tested control cables and accessories.
Isolate the supplyvoltage before replacing a fuse.
The device has an Ethernet connection. Only skilled personnel may
connect the device to a network.
Only shielded Ethernet cables may be used.
Only skilled personnel may configure the device for connection to a
network.
It is recommended to operate the device via the touch screen during
sequences.
The device contains electric drives which can be blocked|destroyed by
foreign substances. Make sure that no foreign substances reach the
interior of the device.
After using the Biowelder®TC, you should always log out. Otherwise
another user is able to manipulate the device with your account.
The auto login is used to work more efficientlywith the Biowelder®TC.
The auto login can only be activated for one user. This user will be logged in
AUTOMATICALLYwithout entering any username and password after
each restart or after changing the user interface.
A user of the Supervisor group should NOT use the auto login because
of safety reasons, otherwise any user is able to take essential changes on
the Biowelder®TC under the Supervisor account.
Not following the manual instructions of the manufacturer may lead in to
unreliability, hazardous situations and disturbances of safety.

3 General
Please read this operating manual carefully. It allows you to start up and
operate the device safely and successfully.
3.1 Warranty
We shall, in principle, be liable for defects for a period of one year after
delivery. This warranty excludes the spring contact and cap, the crosshead
tube holder disengaging assembly and the shaft blade fixing.
In the event of a defect we shall, at our own discretion, be entitled
by way of subsequent performance to effect a replacement delivery or
to rectify the defect.
In the event of a defect in title, we shall be entitled to remedy such defect
by modifying the delivered item in a manner reasonably acceptable for the
customer. The customer shall only be entitled to claim damages in lieu of
performance in the event of intentional or grossly negligent breach of duty
on the part of Sartorius Stedim Biotech. If in the event of a defect in title
modification is not feasible on economically reasonable terms orwithin a
reasonable period, both the customer and we shall be entitled to withdraw
from the contract. Where Sartorius Stedim Biotech has provided a warranty
as to durability, the customer shall be required to furnish evidence that the
material defect existed at the time of transfer of risk, unless the customer
cannot reasonably be expected to do so in individual cases.
In all other respects, the provisions contained below under “Liability” shall
also apply to the warranty.

General
3.2 Liability disclaimer
Proper use
Sartorius Stedim Biotech will not accept any liability for faults
and damage that occur through improper handling and because
of inappropriate use of the device.
Improper handling takes place in the case of noncompliance with the
operating manual, especially instructions for start-up. Return the device
only in the original packaging or in appropriately secure packaging. We
accept no liability for transit damage.The Biowelder®TC was designed for
industrial use and may not be used for human medical applications.We
accept no liability for errors made when connecting the device to a network.
The system is intended only for the purpose mentioned in the manual.
Another use above and beyond this or retrofitting of the device without a
written agreement with the Sartorius Stedim Biotech is considered
improper use. Sartorius Stedim Biotech is not liable for any damage
resulting from this.The operator alone bears the risk.
Liability
In the event of intent or gross negligence on the part of legal
representatives or employees at executive level, and in the event of
culpable breach of material contractual duties by the same or other
employees, Sartorius Stedim Biotech shall be liable in accordance with the
legal provisions. With regard to any breach of minor contractual duties by
other employees, Sartorius Stedim Biotech shall not be liable, nor in the
event of slight negligence of legal representatives or of employees at
executive level. Sartorius Stedim Biotech shall not be liable for losses that
are not typically associated with this type of contract or that are scarcely
foreseeable. This shall apply, in particular, without being limited to, claims
due to missed profit and consequential damages. With regard to claims
under Product Liability Law, such Law shall apply without restriction. Claims
for damages in tort shall only apply if they are caused intentionally or by
gross negligence.This shall also apply with regard to actions of vicarious
agents of Sartorius Stedim Biotech. Sartorius Stedim Biotech shall be liable
in accordance with the statutory provisions in the event of culpable physical
injury and hazards to life and health.
If determination of fault is required for any claim of the customer, the
burden of evidence shall rest with the customer unless otherwise prescribed
by law and the customer cannot reasonably be expected to bear the burden
of evidence.
3.3 Patent
Biowelder®Total Containment is a registered trademark of Sartorius Stedim
Biotech GmbH.
The manufacturer reserves the right to make any changes and
improvements in the product and process described in this manual at any
time without notice. All registered trademarks and patents are the property
of their respective owners.

Introduction
4 Introduction
The Biowelder®TC works by means of a thermal welding technique that
uses no laminar flow. In this welding technique the blade is kept sterile and
pyrogen-free during the welding process. This occurs according to the
reaction equation orArrhenius’s law by means of a temperature and time
constant (Wallhäuser: The D-value resistance indicator for bacillus subtilis is
less than 1 sec at 200°C of dry heat). The inserted pre-sterilized tubing
(gama irradiated and/or autoclaved) tubes are separated by the heated
blade and thermally welded to each other by the device. The welding is
completely automated and is released only after a finished cycle.
Biowelder® TC was developed and programmed to weld C-Flex® 374,
Advantaflex, Pharmed BPT and SaniPure™BDF™. These parameters are
validated at room temperature.

4.2 Safety
As the blade can reach temperatures of over 400°C during the welding
process and drives move with high forces, the cover must not be opened
during the process to avoid injury. The device releases the cover
automatically as soon as the blade has cooled off adequately. Use only
tubes that are compatible with the device. Use only Biowelder®TC single
use blades from Sartorius. Use the blades only once to obtain optimum
results. Use the blade remover tool (accessory) all the time to remove the
blade from the device.
4.3 Limitations
The welds made with the Biowelder®TC are guaranteed to be of sufficient
quality and strength for sterile fluid transfer. However, it is ultimately the
responsibility of the end consumer to check and validate the device for
suitability. Under no circumstances can data from this operating manual be
presented to an official body as reference to manufacture a clinical product
without the written consent of the Sartorius Stedim Biotech.

Introduction
The Biowelder®TC was designed for industrial use and may not be used for
medical applications. Please refer to Chapter 1 Hazard Information for
additional limitations.The connection created by the Biowelder®TC cannot
meet the requirements for medical applications. It is the responsibility of the
user to decide whether the device is suitable. Examine welds thoroughly
before using them.
4.4 Function
The Biowelder®TC is used for the sterile welding of two tube pieces. Every
piece of tube is connected on one end to a container, bag or process unit.
The other end is sealed with a clamp, plug or another seal. To create a sterile
connection, first place the two tubes in the tube holder of the
Biowelder®TC.Then a new blade is inserted into the blade holders of the
device. Closing the cover and pressing the start button activates the steps
in the welding programme. In the first step the blade is heated to over
400°C and held for 5 seconds at this temperature. This step guarantees that
the blade is sterile and pyrogen-free. Then the blade is cooled to the
required cutting and welding temperature which depends on the type of
tube. Afterwards the heated blade simultaneously cuts through the two
pieces of tube.The blade temperature is controlled during the cutting
process. Once the tubes have been cut through, the device turns the tubes
so that they line up. The blade is then pulled back, the tubes pressed
together and the weld cooled off. The release of the cover signals the end of
the welding and the device can be opened. The welded tube is taken out
and is now ready for use.The used blade and the waste tube are removed.
The Biowelder®TC is a fully automatic unit and displays the successful
conclusion of the welding if all steps were followed properly. The process is
completely reproducible.
The device is programmed with standard parameter sets for welding C-Flex®
374, AdvantaFlex®, PharMed®BPT and SaniPure™BDF™.
These parameter sets have been validated at room temperature.
The use of a new blade after each welding prevents cross-contamination
and to ensure proper welding quality.To simplify the logging of welding data
for the user, the Biowelder®TC has a memory card to which data can be
written as needed. In addition, data can be loaded to a computer through a
Web browser. To simplify the validation or to facilitate the validation process
for the customer, a validation set matching the device can be acquired for
the Biowelder®TC as an option.

4.5 Blocked device
Check all equipment inside the Biowelder®TC device continuously for
operational reliability. In addition, monitor every step during a sequence. If
equipment such as a drive or the heating gives out, or the execution of a
step in a sequence fails, then an error is present. Such a fault leads to a
blocked device. When the device is blocked,
all on-going processes are stopped and the operator control displays this
message: “All runs blocked (X)”
A blocked device is present if the operator control displays the following
text: “All runs blocked (X)”
If a sequence of a process cannot be finished for some reason, this does not
necessarily indicate a defective device. It could be that the user has chosen
a wrong type of tube, for example.
A blocked device does NOT necessarily contain a defective component.
It is possible that a sequence could not be completed successfully.
If there is a blocked device because of a failed sequence, in most cases the
device can be reversed. In such a case the blockage can usually be resolved
by switching the device on and off.
If there is no equipment defect, in most cases a blockage in the
Biowelder®TC can be remedied by switching it off and then switching it on
again.
If there is an equipment defect, the device must be repaired. In this case,
contact your Sartorius Stedim Biotech Service Representative.
Before you contact your Sartorius Stedim Biotech Service Representative,
describe the fault in detail and save the “All” log to the SD card as
described in Chapter 6.2.10 Log. Send these files together with the fault
description to your Sartorius Stedim Biotech Service Representative.
4.6 Cleaning instruction
Before cleaning the Biowelder®TC the cleaning cover for the temperature
sensor must be installed.
Before cleaning the cleaning agent must be tested on compatibilitywith
the respective materials.
The Biowelder®TC may not be cleaned with a spray- or steam procedure.
Spray- or steam cleaning can cause a reduced life time of single
components or lead to damage of single components.
The manufacturer disclaims any liability if components are damaged by
improper cleaning or in the case of non-observance of the cleaning
instructions or when persons are being injured by not observing the proper
cleaning instructions.

4.7 General Cleaning
Immerse a cleaning tissue with a standard disinfectant, e. g. microcide,
and clean the contaminated parts.
4.8 Periodic Cleaning
To increase process security it is recommended to periodically clean the
contact springs of the Guide Block - Turning squeeze axis, the contact
points for the tubing holders and the tubing holders in the pinching area.
For cleaning the contact springs and the contact points, it is recommended
to use a cotton bud which is immersed with a standard disinfectant,
e. g. microcide.
4.9 Cleaning the Thermopile Sensor
The cleaning of the temperature sensor should only be performed in case
the temperatures are outside of the range of tolerance.
After cleaning, it must be ensured that the visibility field of the
temperature sensor does not bear any residues.
For cleaning the temperature sensorwill be removed from the
Biowelder®TC. Use an appropriate cotton bud with a max. diameter of
4 mm and immerse it with a standard disinfectant, e. g. microcide, and clean
the visibility field of the temperature sensor.
4.10 Decontamination
The machine must be decontaminated with either:
−Isopropanol 70% (e.g. Klericide 70/30)
−Sodium hypochlorite 0.75% (e.g. Klericide-CR)
−Propanol 45%, Isopropanol 25%, Ethanol 4.7% (e.g. Bacillol AF)
The customer is responsible for correct decontamination!
After correct decontamination, the customer must fill out the
“Decontamination form” that the machine is free from biological, chemical
or radioactive contaminants. This form can be get from the local
Sartorius representative.

Start-up
5.3 Installation
The Biowelder®TC is portable and can be used in any location. Use a secure
and horizontal base for the installation. Make sure to place the machine in a
way that the access to the on/off switch and the emergency off button is
well accessible!
Connect the power cord with safety earthing to the device socket and
switch it on. The power supply must be according to the technical data.
After a brief start-up section the device is ready to operate.
The raiser is responsible for the safety of the system and its integration.
5.4 Login
The device is set upon delivery so that a user with the name “Supervisor”
from the “Supervisor” user group or the name “Example” from the
“Operator” user group can login without a password. In this case,
the instructions needed to execute initialisation are displayed on the
touch screen.
An automatic login can be activated. See Chapter 6.2.9 User management
5.5 Maintenance
There is no spare part list for Biowelder®TC available for the customer.
Sartorius recommends to have a yearly intervention and maintenance
executed by your local Sartorius Service representative that includes
temperature sensor validation. Please contact your local Service
representative from Sartorius to establish a maintenance contract.
This information has to be confirmed with the OKbutton on the screen.
Contact your Sartorius Stedim Biotech Service Representative, if
maintenance is needed.
5.6 Entering settings
Different settings such as the following can be entered from a Supervisor
of the “Supervisor” user group via the menu: language, date, time and
type of tube.
Read the corresponding Chapter 6.2 Touch screen
5.7 Initializing axes
After the device starts up, an initialisation must be executed. Follow the
instructions on the touch screen.
The tube holder and the blade are removed from the device.
The user then closes the cover.

5.8 Blade handling
To insert a blade into the device, proceed as follows:
Insert the blade by handling it with fingers avoiding touching the centre.
−Ensure the blade is completely pushed to the end of the blade holder.
Pay attention! The blade must be pushed completely to the end to avoid
risk of burning and damaging the device.
Follow the instruction displayed on the screen for the steps until the weld is
completed and the tubing removed.
1. Take the blade remover tool in your hand.
2. Push the blade remover tool over the blade.
3. Pull it back together with blade.

5.9 Welding
The device is programmed with standard parameter sets forwelding
C-Flex® 374, AdvantaFlex®, PharMed®BPT and SaniPure™BDF™.
These parameter sets have been validated at room temperature.
To execute welding, follow the instructions on the touch screen. If the
device has not been previously initialised, no welding can be executed at
this point. Proceed as follows:
Tube holder and tubes are available, and the right type of tube is inserted.
See Chapter 6.2.7 Type of tube
1. Insert blade (see Chapter 5.8 Blade handling for details)
Make sure that the blade is correctly inserted up to the stop in the holder
provided for it. See Chapter 5.8 Blade handling
2. Insert tube holder set
The tube holders are inserted so that the clamp bars are facing each other.
3. Insert the tubes into the tube holder and close cover.
Clean the exterior of the tubes using a suitable disinfectant
(see Chapter 4.6 Cleaning instruction).
Insert the tubes carefully on the holders up to the stop.
Make sure that the diameters of the tube holder and of the tubes match.
Use a minimum of 450 mm tubing
For reasons of safety, seal off the tubes on all sides with a clamp, plug or
another seal before every welding. Attach the clamps from a distance
between 2 and 10 cm close to the device but outside the closed cover.
Make sure that the tubes on the left side of the device can rotate freely.
Otherwise, this can lead to a discontinuation of welding.
No tension orstress shall be applied on tubing during the entirewelding process.

4. Start welding sequence
Check on the touch screen whetherthe type of tube entered matches with
the type of tube inserted. Check inside and outside diameteras well. If all
specifications match, press the start button to start the welding sequence.
The welding is finished when the cover opens.
Afterwards proceed as follows:
1. Remove blade with the blade remover tool
(ref to Chapter 5.8 Blade handling)
The blade cooling remains switched on until the blade is removed by the
user or the after-cooling time of two minutes have elapsed.
Each blade may only be used once.
2. Remove tubes from the holder
If the welding seam sticks together, pinch it gently to open up.
3. Check quality of welding
For an optimal connection, let the tube cool for about one minute before
checking the welding and before the thermal weld is mechanically loaded.
4. Dispose of waste tube appropriately
The welding is now finished and a newwelding sequence can be started.

6 Operation
The Biowelder®TC comes with two user interfaces which cover some of the
common functionalities. The device can either be operated via the touch
screen integrated into the device or via Ethernet through a Web browser.
Wherever possible the user should operate the device using the
local touch screen. Switching between touch screen andWeb browser
is not recommended.
The following chapter describes the differences between the
two user interfaces.
6.1 Mutual exclusion
The following rules are implemented so that it becomes clearwhich
user interface has control of the device:
You can only work with one user interface at a time.
The other user interface remains inactive.
When the device is started, neither user interface is active or inactive.
Web browser and touch screen become active by pressing an operational
control, i.e. by pressing any button.

Rules for activating/switching over to a user interface:
The touch screen becomes immediatelyactive if it is touched.
TheWeb browseronly becomes active if no user has logged in on the device
or, after start-up, if an operational control in theWeb browseris activated.
If you wish to activate the Web browser user interface, you must log out of
the touch screen.What they have in common is that switching over from
one user interface to the other logs out the current user. If a user has
activated automatic login, this user is logged in, otherwise the login

6.2 Touch screen
The touch screen operates through a touch-sensitive screen. The operator
controls displayed can be pressed directly, in the same way as buttons. If the
touch screen will be operated with more than 1 finger it can lead to
unexpected results.
6.2.1 Menu tree
The following diagram shows the menu tree of the touch screen for the
Supervisor user group.

6.2.2 Operator controls
The touch screen has only a few different standardized operator controls
which are also common in other user interfaces.
Operator control Example Meaning
Button Start: Start process
Button Stop: Discontinue process
Button
Buttons have a symbol but they can also be labelled with a
text. See Chapter 6.2.3 Summary of symbols
Spinner A spinner offers a selection which you can scroll through
using the arrow button.
Spinner with
input
User name input is possible with this spinner which allows
for text input. To do so, touch the text of the selection and
switch to the input window.
Text box Changing the characters in a text box is treated in the same
way as the spinner with input.
A text box has a frame. A label indicates the meaning; in this
case, password. Touching the area inside the frame opens
the input window.
Input window Alphanumeric inputs without special characters but with
upper and lower case are possible.
Switch from number input to upper and lower-case input
using the “1>A>a” button. The keyboard changes
accordingly. Pressing Del deletes the whole input.
ßdeletes the last number.
Menu The user can navigate to different functions from the Menu.
Navigate to the next menu using the arrow button.
An Operator has only one menu page available. Exit the
menu through the Cancel button.
