DESCRIPTION
TheModelRT100RefrigeratedCondensationTrapcombinesanewhighspeedsmallcompressorand
anultra-lowtemperaturerefrigerantina uniqueevaporatorcabinetconfiguration.Thiscombination
providesmaximumrefrigerationcapacityinareliablecompactpackage.Thestainlesssteelchamber
isrefrigeratedbythedirectexpansionoffreonrefrigerantandisinsulatedwithpolyurethanefoam.
TheRT100canbeusedforacidoraqueoussystemsinterchangeablydependingontheoption
selected.
CAUTION:Anappropriatecommerciallyavailablechemicaltrapshouldbeinserted
"inline"betweentheRT100andthevacuumpumpwhenevercorrosivechemicalsareused.We
recommendtheSavantModelSCT120ChemicalTrapandtheSavantrangeofdisposablechemical
cartridgesfortheseapplications.
UNPACKINGINSTRUCTIONS
Carefullyremovetheequipmentfromtheshippingcrate.Checkeachitemagainstthepackingslip.In
caseofdamage,notifythecarrierimmediatelyandmakesurethatthecarrierinspectsandleavesan
inspectionreport.Registeranyclaimsforshippingdamageagainstthecarrierorhisagent.Itis
alwaysadvisabletoholdtheshippingcartonuntilequipmenthasbeeninspectedandchecked,ason
rareoccasionsithasbeennecessarytoreturntheequipmentforrepair.

TheRT100RefrigeratedTraprequirestheattachmentoftheCP100ClosurePlateforthecondensationof
vaporsinthestainlesssteelcontainer;alternatively,onemayinserttheGIT100GlassInsertTrapforthe
condensation,ofvapors...Notethattheglasstrapisdefinatelypreferredforacidcondensateandin
generalitiseasiertodisposeofthecondensatesincetheglasstrapisremovable.
Analkali(sodalime)trapforacidvaporsora boricacidtrapforalkalinevaporsshouldbeseriously
consideredtopreventcorrosionofthevacuumpump.Sucha trapisusuallyinstalledbetweenthetrap
andtheSpeedVac.TheSavantSCT120isidealforthisapplication.
TheSCT120ChemicalTrapcanbeusedwithdisposablechemicalcartridgesDC120A(foracidvapors),
DC120W(foraqueousvapors)orDC120M13(fororganicsolventvapors).Disposablecartridgesenable
quickandeasyremovalandreplacementoftheadsorbentchemicals.
Acharcoaltrapmayalsobeinstalledwhereonesuspectsthecarryoverofradioactiveisotopetagged
vapors(e.g.1131).TheSCT120canalsobeloadedwithlarge(4to8)meshactivatedcharcoalandusedfor
thispurpose.
•CP100ClosurePlate—ThemoldedrubbergasketontopoftheRT100shouldbeverylightlycoated
withvacuumgreasepriortoinstallationoftheclosureplate.Theoutside12.7mm(Vz")outletfitting^
shouldbeconnectedtothevacuumpumptubing.Thecenter12.7mm{Vz")fittingconnectsthetubing
totheSpeedVacConcentrator.Securelyclampalltubinglines.Note:Thestainlesssteeltrapmustbe
cleanedoutandwipeddryaftereachusetominimizecorrosion.Donotallowmorethanonehalfliter
tobecollectedbeforecleanout.
•GIT100GlassInsertTrapisrecommendedforcondensingacidsandcorrosivesolventsthatcould
affectthestandardstainlesssteeltrap.TheGlassInsertTrapshouldhave200mlofethanolfillingthe
gapbetweentheouterglasswallandthestainlesssteeltrapformaximumthermalconductivity.The
outside12.7mm(Vz") portconnectstothevacuumpumptubingline.Thecenter12.7mm{Vz") inlet
portconnectstotheSpeedVacConcentrator.WhenusingtheGlassInsertTrap,thevacuumgauge
tubeisconnectedinthepumplinebyusingtheTF100TeeFitting.Alltubinglinesmustbeclamped.
WestronglyrecommendtheuseoftheSavantQFK120-3TubingPackageforallglassconnections.
•TP100TubingandValvingPackageprovidesinterconnectionfortheSpeedVaccondensationtrap
system.
Thefour,1.22m(4Ft.)lengthsoftubingcanbecuttoconvenientlengthstoinsertthebleed
valveandtheoptionalTF100TeeFitting.Allclampsaresuppliedfortubingconnections.The12.7mm
{Vz") insidediametertubingconnectstheSpeedVacConcentratortothecondensationtrap.This
tubingshouldbecutataconvenientlengthtoinstallthebleedervalve.Aftercuttingtubingtodesired
length,
insertvalve.A shorterlengthoftubingisrequiredonthesideoftheGlassInsertTrap(10cmto{
15cm/ 4"to6")thanthatrequiredforattachingtotheClosurePlate...Clampallconnections.See

•GBV120GlassBleederValveisdesignedtobleedairintoeithersideofthevacuumline.Thisisdone
byrotatingthe"BLEED"arrowonthestemtothetubinglinetobe
bled.
Thethroughpositionisinline
withthetubingconnectionsonthebarrel.Toinsurevacuumtightoperation,makesurethebarrelis
keptlightlylubricatedwithvacuumgrease.
•QFK120-3,"Quick-Fit"TubingKitprovides"O"ringsealedpolypropylenefittingsf.orvacuumtubing
connections.Thispackageisrecommendedforglasstrapconnections.Thefittingendsgoonthe
trapconnections.Theunionconnectorssuppliedwiththiskitgobetweenthebleedervalveandthe
glasstrap(UC1212)andbetweentheVP100andtheTF100(UC1258).Theseconvenientfittings
providequickhookuptotheglasstraptherebysimplifyingremovalandcleanout.Forclosureplate
operationtherightangle"Q"fittings(1RQAT)providesmoreconvenientconnectionandtubing

OPERATION
Rotorinstallation.Openthelidoftherotorchamber.Visuallyalignthepinonthedriveshaftwiththegrooveonthe
bottomoftherotor.Thencarefullylowertherdtorontothedriveshaft.Rotatetherotorbyhandtobesurethepinis
linedupwiththegroove.Securetheassemblybyscrewingtheretainingknobintothedriveshaftabovetherotor.
Tightenitfirmlybutnotexcessively.Closethelid.
Alwaysbalancerotorloads.Anunbalancedrotorcausesvibrationthatwillwearoutthebearings.Loadthe
rotoruniformly.Thereneednotbea tubeineachholder,butthetubesmustbeevenlyspacedaroundtherotor.
Whenusinga rotorwithaluminumtubeholders,inserttubeholderssymmetrically.Whendryingdifferenttypesof
sampleinthesamedryingrun,distributeeachtypesymmetrically.Otherwise,theirdifferentdryingratesmight
introduceprecessionintotherotor'srotation.Alwaysselecta rotorintowhichthesampletubesfitsnugly.
Pre-heating.Ifdesired,operatetheDRYINGRATEswitchatleast15minutesbeforeyoustartthedryingoperation.

pressurized,stoptherunbymovingtheROTORswitchtotheOFF/BRAKEposition.Therotorbrakesuntilthe
rotationdecreasesto6-RPM.Donotopenthecoveruntilrotationiscompletelystopped.All220-voltunitshave
acoverlockthatpreventsliftingofthecoverwhentherotorisspinningfasterthan6 RPM.
SC110A/SC210AoperationisthesameasgivenabovefortheSC110,exceptthatyouneednotmanuallyoperate
thevacuumvalve.A speedsensorinsidetheconcentratoractivatesvacuumonlywhentherotorreaches1000
RPM.
WhenyoustoptherunbymovingtheROTORswitchtotheOFF/BRAKEposition,theunitimmediately
bleedstherotorchamber,butwaits10secondsbeforebrakingtherotor.
OperationwiththeSC1021SystemController.
•SC1021SystemController.Usevacuumtubingtoconnectthehosefittingattherearoftheconcentratortothe
otherinstrumentsasdescribedintheSC1021InstructionManual.
MovetheROTORswitchtotheONpositionandleaveitthere.TheSC1021operatesthemotor.TheROTOR
switchontheconcentratorcanbeswitchedOFFasanemergencystopfortherotor.TheDRYINGRATEswitch
controlstheconcentrator'schamberheater.
Removethesmallmetalplateattherearoftheconcentratorcabinet,exposingthe9-pinconnector.Attachthe
controlcablefromthe
SC1021.

Maintaininga cleaninstrumentiscrucial.Cleanspillsimmediately.Driedsolventscanbuildupandimpairrotor
rotation.
Periodiccleaningofthesamplechamberpreventsproblems.Usea detergentsolutionona spongeor
gauze,
thenthoroughlywipethechamberdry.ExcessmoistureinthechamberisremovedonthenextSpeedVac
runbutcanvarytheperformanceofthisrun.
AsdescribedunderInstallation,keepthedriveshaftandrotorcenterlightlycoatedwithvacuumgrease.Donot
lubricatethecoverO-ring.

SpeedVacconcentratorscanbeoperatedmanuallyorattachedtotheSC1021systemcontrollerunitfortotally
automaticoperation.
TheSC110/SC110Acanholdupto100sampletubes.ThelargerSC210Acanholdupto200tubes.A varietyof
availablerotorsholdmicrocentrifugetubes,testtubes,microvials,andminiandstandardscintillationvials.A lineof
large-volume(upto500ml),multi-samplerotorsareavailabletoholdSavant'srecoveryflasksorpear-shaped
flaskswithreceptacleends.A preprotorisavailabletoconcentratelargebatchamountsofsolution.
Typicalapplicationsincludeconcentratingordryingsyntheticoligonucleotides,ethanolprecipitatesofDNA,
hydrochloricacidhydroiysatesofproteins,chromatographyfractions,solidphaseeluants,liquid/liquidextracts,
andclinicalsamplesforanalysisbyHPLC,GC/MS,immunoassay,andbioassay.Theunitsarealsousedinorganic
chemistryresidueanalysis,suchaspesticideanddrugtesting.

Lightlycoatthedrivesiaaftandrotorcenter-withvacuumgrease.Thisprotectsthesesurfacesfromcorrosive
vapors.DonotlubricatethecoverO-ring.

reducessystemmaintenanceandallowsfordisposalofsolventsinanenvironmentallyresponsiblemanner.
CombinedwithanySavantrefrigeratedvaportrap,VaporNetguaranteessolventtrappingequivalenttotrapping
levelsachievedwithLN2.
VaporNettrapsailsolventvaporsintheglassinsertoftherefrigeratedvaportrap.Forvolatilesolvents,VaporNet
offersa cryopumpingmodewhichallowsconcentratorchamberairtoescapetothevacuumpumpwhileleaving
solventvaporsintherefrigeratedvaportrap.Inthismode,solventvapormigrationisfacilitatedbythepressure
differentialbetweenthesamplechamberandthevaportrap.Fornon-volatilesolventsVaporNetoffersa fullvac-
