Firstly,do notforgettoremovethefrontcapbefore using!
Sometelescopeswillhaveasmallerinnercapaspartofthemainfrontcap.Normallyboth
willbetakenofftoallowasmuchlightintothe telescope aspossible,butiftheviewofthe
Moonistoobright,fitthemaincap onbutwiththe smallercapoff.Thiscutsdownthelight
reaching youreyetoacomfortablelevel.(Note:sometelescopescomewithasmallmoon
filterthatcanbeusedtocutdownthelight.Moonand planetaryfiltersareavailable
separately)
Refracting(lens) telescopescanbeusedforlandviewing,butwill typicallygiveanupright,
butreversed image.Anoptional Erecting (Amici)Prism can giveafully-corrected image if
thisispreferred.Reflecting (mirror)telescopeswill givealand image thatisalmostupside
down.Thiscan berotated180°withanErectingEyepiece,butwithanincreasein
magnificationof50%.Usuallylessmagnificationisrequiredforlandviewing,souseonly
lowpoweredeyepieces.
Whenassembling thetripod and mount,makesureall the nutsand boltsaretightened
firmly,butbe carefulnottoovertighten.
Withequatorial mounts,the RightAscension axismustpointtotrueSouth(orNorthinthe
northernhemisphere),and mustaimup tothecorrectangle.Toachievethis,the pointeron
thesideofthemountneedstobeoverthenumberthatisyourlatitude;forMelbournefor
example,thatis38(i.e.38°South).
Thefinderscopewillusuallygiveanupsidedownimage.Thisisnormal.Itneedstobe
accuratelylinedupwiththemaintelescope,andtheeasiestwayistotargetsomething
distincton the horizon,indaytime.Find itthroughthe main telescopefirst, then adjustthe
aimingofthe finderscopeuntilthatobjectiscentredonthe crosshairs.Findinganobjectin
the nightskywill then be quitestraightforward.
Cleanobjectivelensesand eyepiecesbycarefullybrushingoffanyloosedust,thenwipe
gentlywithasoftfacialtissuemoistenedwithisopropylalcohol,orproprietarylenscleaner.
Blowloosedustoffmirrors withdrycompressedair.If furthercleaningisrequired,it must
be done byaqualified optical technician.
