How to Use This Guide
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this manual is to provide the user of the CF Series Scanner
(Firmware Rev. S27x or higher) with an overview of the scanner, its
specifications, its user interface.
This manual is divided into three sections (two chapters and one appendix) as
follows:
•Chapter 1 is an overview of the scanner, listing features and
specifications.
•Chapter 2 explains how to operate the scanner using an optional
keypad. The user of the scanner need not have any in-depth
knowledge of computers or scanning technology. The keypad
interface provided for the scanner makes it easy for anyone to use.
•Appendix A covers site selection, unpacking, and set-up of the
scanner.
We recommend that you read the entire manual before attempting regular
production, since some functions affect the results of other functions.
Conventions Used in This Guide
Keypad keys are shown in bold type. For example, the Scan key is shown as
Scan and the Reverse key as Reverse.

•Electronic alignment of Y-axis (merge)
•Electronic alignment of X-axis (splice)
Advanced Image Processing
•Speckle Removal
•Gap Filling
•Patented Local Area Adaptive Thresholding
•Contrast Enhancement
•Polarity reversible to scan both positive and negative images
•Image mirroring
Multiple Resolution
•Available resolutions range from 1600 to 100 dpi
Refer to Table 1-A for available resolution values.
•Patented True Resolution Control, using the averaging method of
eight-bit video data to avoid dropping pixels
•Up to eight resolutions for the CF 1000/44

•High-resolution Preview Display for precise monitoring of image
quality
•Real-time monitoring of the captured image on a scrolling display

1-2
•Zoom-in, zoom-out, and pan capabilities
•Echo Scan
Echo Scan is a special feature that allows intermittent repetitive
scanning of specific image areas. It rescans the document area visible
in the Preview Display repeatedly, forward and backward, until you
give the signal to continue scanning the rest of the document. With
Echo Scan, you can fine tune the scan parameters for the best possible
image quality in all areas of the document.
Diagnostics
•Self-diagnostic tests are performed at power-up and on rebooting,
unless manually overridden.
•More powerful, menu-driven, internal diagnostic software is available
for use by factory-trained technicians.
Construction
•Solid construction based on the 1000 dpi model
•Casters for easy placement of the scanner

1-3
Specifications
The scanner is designed to operate in a typical office environment, with
options available for different user needs.
Functional Specifications
•Scan Speed
Speed can range from 3.9 to 138.5 inches per minute, depending on
the selected scan resolution. Refer to Table 1-A for a comparison of

2 CF Series Scanner:
Control Panel Operations
This chapter explains how to operate the CF Series Scanner from its
optional control panel. If your scanner is not equipped with an control
panel, the scanner is controlled through the host computer software. Refer
to ScanServ User's Manual (A65352-03) for its operations.
System Power
To turn the CF Series Scanner on and off, use the orange switch located on
the upper right side of the front panel. This switch illuminates when the
power is on. Should the light fail to illuminate, check whether the power
cord is plugged in at both the wall outlet and the scanner. Also, check to
see if the circuit breaker button, located next to the AC power input on the
rear of the scanner has tripped and popped out. If it has, push it in and try
to turn the power on again. If the breaker continues to trip, call a qualified
service technician.
When power-up is successful, a message momentarily appears on the
scanner's display, noting the revision level of the firmware. If you press
any keypad key while this message is displayed, the scanner will skip its
self-test sequence. Otherwise, this message displays for two seconds and
then proceeds to the power-up diagnostics sequence that is described in
the next section.
Power-Up Diagnostics
On power-up, the scanner runs a series of self-diagnostic tests. The
keypad display shows the test numbers in effect. The following list shows
what function or component is being tested when the corresponding
number appears in the keypad display window.
1CPU RAM
2CALS Board
3CCB Line Generation
4IP SCB section
5IP Convolution
6Camera Response
7Display Memory
8Display Interrupt

2-2
9Display DMA Completion
Tests 7, 8, and 9 are performed only if the preview display monitor is
installed. Also, all the above tests are skipped if you press any key while
the firmware revision message is displayed.
Any failure of these self-diagnostic tests is indicated by a flashing test
number and an audible tone.
Operating the Scanner
The scanner may be controlled in either of two ways. You may use either
the scanner control panel, as described in this chapter, or a host computer
with scan server software such as ScanServTM - a Scangraphics' application
program that allows a personal computer to control the CF Series Scanner.
Scanner Control Panel:
The Keypad and Keypad Display Window
Keypad controls on the scanner let you set parameters and scan
documents. Also, the current values for the various parameters are shown
in a one-line Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) window on the keypad.
The VFD display will be referred to as the keypad display throughout this
manual.
The scanner's speed, positive/negative polarity, resolution, window size,
filter setting, tracking, and threshold value are each displayed in the
keypad display just above the key that allows you to control its setting.
The keypad and a sample keypad display window are shown in Figure 2-1.
