Safety
General description
The Backcooler is a high-performance cooling unit for cooling IT components, without additional
fans.
Particularly energy-efficient cooling is possible because of the low, air-side pressure drop. The heat
is dissipated in the immediate vicinity of the origin, so that the room is not subject to thermal load.

Danger of operational- & failure safety
CAUTION
Work performed on the device by unqualified personnel, e.g. cleaning, maintenance
or repair, can endanger the operational safety of the device.
To ensure a long life of the device, the device must be regularly cleaned and
serviced by qualified personnel.
Danger of over-voltage
NOTE
Switching operations in the network or lightening can cause dangerous over-
voltages in the network, which need to be absorbed through suitable measures.
These over-voltages can destroy the device or parts and lead to failure.
The operator of the device must ensure that a suitable over-voltage protection
system for the device has been installed by a technician.
It is recommended to use an over-voltage protection of the type SPD3 and to install
it in the close vicinity of the device.
Hot surfaces
CAUTION
Some parts of the device can become hot during operation or in case of failure.
Let the hot parts cool down before starting any work on the device

Proper use
The Back Cooler is an air/water heat exchanger and is mounted directly on the rear of the IS-1
cabinet.
Particularly high energy efficiency is achieved by eliminating the fans.
A special adapter frame can be used to mount on the server racks by other manufacturers.
The Backcooler must be operated above the dew-point temperature to prevent condensation from
forming.
The installation of the Backcooler must be frost-free.

Water quality requirements
For safe functioning of the iQdata Backcooler, the cooling water must be present in a
certain water quantity, temperature and pressure. Adhere to water quality as per
VGB-R 455 P.
The requirements related to the primary water quality are presented as follows in addition to
the data shown in the annexe:
To ensure maximum life span of the system, the fed cooling water must correspond to the
VGB-cooling water-guidelines (VGB-R 455 P). The cooling water used must be soft enough
to prevent deposits; but neither must it be too soft, as this would lead to corrosion of the
system.
The following table contains the most important contaminants as well as the methods to
remove them:
Pollution of water
Method of disposal
Mechanical contaminants (dp > 0.8 mm)
Filtration of water
Excessive hardness
Softening of water by ion exchange
Moderate content of mechanical contaminants and
hardeners
Addition of dispersing or stabilising
agents
Moderate content of chemical contaminants
Addition of passivation agents and
inhibitors
Biological contaminants (bacteria and algae)
Addition of biocides
It is recommended that the following hydrological data be achieved as far as possible:

iQdata Backcooler
Description
General information
The Backcooler is mounted directly on the rear side of the IS-1 cabinet, preventing warm server
exhaust air from entering the server room installation room.
The thermal energy from the IT components is taken up by the Backcooler without any additional
fans and is conveyed to the re-cooling system by means of the cold water contained in it.
The elimination of the fans and the especially low hydraulic pressure loss on the air side makes the
Backcooler especially energy efficient.
The Back Cooler replaces the back door of the server cabinet and can be opened up to (Switch-
Tubes).
The cold water flow resistance on the water side is extremely low because of special water-carrying
hinges.
An airflow rectifier guarantees that air flow through the heat exchanger is even.
The rectifier is also equipped with a filter class G3 air filtering function (in accordance with DIN EN
779).
Air separation between the warm and cold sections of IS-1 cabinets takes place in the rear section of
the IT components. Thus, the IT components are located in the cold section of the rack, which
considerably increases the life span. Switches can be installed in the cabinets without any additional
effort (Switch-Tubes). Due to the very small area containing warm air, thermal energy radiating out
into the installation room is prevented.

Filling the Backcooler with cold water
The Backcooler is filled with cold water via the building network.
For ventilating the heat exchanger, there is a vent valve (Schrader valve) above the door, which
must be opened while filling to let the air escape from the cooling system.
Simple, leakage-free ventilation is possible via a hose, with valve depressor and integrated ball valve
(not included in the scope of delivery of the Backcooler)

Air separation of hot areas / cold area
For adjusting the air separation to the respective IT components, this can be moved. The sealing is
done with special brush strips, which guarantee high airtightness.
Thereby, the hot section in the rack can be kept particularly small and the heat emission in the room
is reduced to a minimum.
The air separation is set to the shortest server (Blades).
The IT components are chiefly in the cold rack section. For switches, there is no need to provide
extra airflow, as these are also located in the cold server section.

Airflow rectifier / Filter
The Backcooler is equipped with 2 units rectifiers, which simultaneously function as a filter, filter
class G3 according to DIN EN 779.
The rectifier (filter) has an average separation efficiency of 90%.
The rectifier helps in achieving a particularly even air flow of the heat exchanger. This allows a
particularly high cooling capacity.
Both the rectifiers can be pulled out from the slide nuts of the door, so that it is easy to switch without
using a tool.
