1. Introduction
1.1 Information about this operating manua
This operating manua is designed to enab e you to use the humimeter LM5 safe y and
effective y. It is part of the device, has to be stored nearby and must be easi y acces-
sib e to users at a times.
A users are required to carefu y read and make sure that they have understood this
operating manua before using the humimeter LM5. A of the safety and operating
instructions detai ed in this manua have to be observed to ensure the safety of the
device.
1.2 Limitation of iabi ity
A of the information and instructions provided in this operating manua have been
compi ed on the basis of the current standards and regu ations, the state of the art,
and the extensive expertise and experience of Scha er GmbH.
Scha er GmbH does not accept any iabi ity for damage associated with the fo owing,
which a so voids the warranty:
• Non-observance of this operating manua
• Improper use
• Inadequate y qua ified users
• Unauthorised modifications
• Technica changes
• Use of unapproved spare parts
This fast measuring procedure can be affected by a range of different factors. For this

2. For your safety
The device comp ies with the fo owing European directives:
• Restriction of Hazardous Substances in E ectrica and E ectronic Equipment
(RoHS)
• E ectromagnetic compatibi ity (EMC)
The device corresponds to state-of-the-art techno ogy. However, it is sti associated
with a number of residua hazards.
These hazards can be avoided through strict observance of our safety information.
2.1 Proper use
• Easy to use device for quick y measuring the moisture content of stacks of
eather
• The device must on y be used for taking measurements on the products defined
in the fo owing sections of this manua (see "6. Product types").
2.2 Improper use
• The device must not be used in ATEX.
• The device is not suitab e for measuring the moisture content of individua
eather hides.
• The device is not waterproof and must be protected from water and fine dust.
2.3 User qua ifications
The device must on y be operated by peop e who can be expected to re iab y take the
measurements. The device must not be operated by peop e whose reaction times may
be s owed due to, e.g. the use of drugs, a coho or medication.
A persons using this device must have read, understood and fo ow the instructions
provided in the operating manua .

2.4 Genera safety information
The fo owing safety information has to be observed at a times to avoid damage to
objects and injury to peop e:
• Remove the batteries if the device isn't used for a pro onged period of time
(4 weeks).
• In case of damages or oose parts on the device, remove the batteries and con-
tact Scha er GmbH or your dea er.
A of the device’s technica features have been inspected and tested before de ivery.
Every device has a seria number. Do not remove the tag with the seria number.
2.5 Warranty
The warranty does not app y to:
• Damage resu ting from non-observance of the operating manua
• Damage resu ting from third-party interventions
• Products that have been used improper y or modified without authorisation
• Products with missing or damaged warranty sea s
• Damage resu ting from force majeure, natura disasters, etc.

3. On receipt of your device
3.1 Taking the device out of its packaging
• Take the device out of its packaging.
• Next, make sure that it is not damaged and that no parts are missing.
3.2 Making sure that a of the components have been inc uded
Make sure that a of the components have been inc uded by checking the package

3.3 Inserting batteries
1. Remove the rubber protection
cover. To do so, ho d the rubber
protection cover at the upper side
and pu it over. If your device is
provided with an optiona USB
port, remove the protection cap
of the USB socket before (figure 1
and 2).
2. Take ho d of the device with one hand, press your thumb
onto the engraved area of the battery compartment (1)
and drag downwards (2) (figure 3).
3. Insert the batteries with negative and positive termina s
matching those indicated on the battery compartment.
Press down the batteries so that they ay f at on the bot-
tom of the housing (figure 4).
» As soon as a batteries have been inserted, the device
switches on automatica y.
4. Push the battery cover onto the housing unti it c icks into
p ace. Then mount the rubber protection cover onto the
housing, beginning at the end where the battery com-
partment is situated (figure 5).

4. Using the device - Basics
4.1 Switching the device on
• Press the button for 3 seconds.
» The disp ay wi then show the status indicator
(figure 6).
» After inserting the batteries, the device switches on
automatica y.
4.2 Se ecting the product type
To do so: The device has to be in the product se ection menu (figure 7).
For an overview of the different product types and the criteria for se ecting them,
p ease refer to "6. Product types".
1. Press the or button to move from one
product to the next Or
2. Press the or button for 3 seconds to open
the product type overview (figure 8).
3. Use the arrow keys to move from one product type
to the next
4. and keep any of them pressed to scro through the
types.
5. Confirm your se ection by pressing .
» The product type you se ected wi now be shown at the top of the disp ay.
4.3 Taking a measurement
• For information on how to take a measurement, see section "5. The measuring
process".
4.4 Switching the device off
To do so: The device has to be in the product se ection or Data Log menu. It is not pos-
sib e to switch off the device when it is in the main menu.
• Press the button for 3 seconds.

5. The measuring process
5.1 Preparing a measurement
To do so: The device has to have near y the same
temperature than the product being measured. It is
recommended to et your humimeter device adjust to
the surrounding temperature of the eather before the
measurement.
• Switch on the device (see "4.1 Switching the device
on").
• Se ect the desired product type (see "6. Product
types") by pressing the or . button (see "4.2
Se ecting the product type").
5.2 Taking a measurement
Due to the measuring princip e and the consequentia y
required measuring depth it is on y possib e to measure
stacked eather.
To do so: The stack has to have a minimum height of
10 mm and the device has to have near y the same tem-
perature than the eather.
• Take ho d of the device with one hand and press
it onto the top of the stack with a pressure of ap-
prox. 4 kg (figure 11).
• When doing so, the sensor surface (b ack area at
the bottom of the device) must be firm y resting on
the eather.
» The device wi now instant y disp ay the moisture
content on the disp ay (figure 12).
» Once the reading has been taken, it can be saved on the device (see "5.5 Saving
individua readings" or "5.6 Saving severa readings (a measurement series) at the
same time").

iInformation - Measuring accuracy
This rapid and non-destructive measuring procedure a ows you to quick y take
moisture readings at a number of different points. When saving the individua
readings, the device wi automatica y ca cu ate the readings' average (see "5.6
Saving severa readings (a measurement series) at the same time").
iInformation - Incorrect readings
A ways make sure to se ect the correct product type for the materia you are
measuring. This prevents taking incorrect readings (see "11. Fau ts").
5.3 Simp ified user
The device can be configured in such a way that the access of the user is restricted to the
product se ection menu combined with the Ho d function.
5.3.1 Activating/Deactivating the simp ified user
• For information on how to activate/deactivate the simp ified user, see section
"9.7 Changing the User eve ".
5.3.2 Using the simp ified user
The simp ified user offers the fo owing imitations:
• The on y usab e menu is a s ight y modified product
se ection menu (figure 13).
» No access to the Data Log or main menu.
• The Ho d function rep aces the function to switch
between the different menus (see "5.4 Ho d func-
tion - Freezing the disp ayed va ues")

5.4 Ho d function - Freezing the disp ayed va ues
The device can be configured in such a way that the information being shown on the
disp ay wi freeze at the touch of a button unti a new button is pressed. This function
can be very usefu when e.g. taking readings in spaces where it is not possib e to see
the disp ay (e.g. overhead).
5.4.1 Activating the Ho d function in the Options menu
To do so: The device has to be switched on and be in the product se ection menu.
1. Press twice or ho d for 2 seconds.
2. Se ect Options . To do so, press or and confirm by pressing .
3. Se ect Log Time (figure 14). To do so, press or
and confirm by pressing .
4. Se ect Ho d (figure 15). To do so, press or
and confirm by pressing .
» The setting has been saved.
5. Press to eave the Options menu.
6. Press to eave the main menu.
5.4.2 Using the Ho d function
To do so: The device has to be switched on and be in the Data Log menu
(see "Data Log menu" page 5).
• Press .
» The current reading wi be frozen. A of the four
symbo s wi now be disp ayed as (figure 16).
• To reactivate the frozen disp ay simp y press any
button.

5.5 Saving individua readings
The device can be configured in such a way that the device wi save a reading every
time a button is pressed. This option (manua saving function) is the device’s defau t
setting.
5.5.1 Activating the manua saving function in the Options menu
To do so: The device has to be switched on and be in the product se ection menu.
1. Press twice or ho d for 2 seconds.
2. Se ect Options . To do so, press or and con-
firm by pressing .
3. Se ect Log Time (figure 17). To do so, press or
and confirm by pressing .
4. Se ect Manua (figure 18). To do so, press or
and confirm by pressing .
» The setting has been saved.
5. Press to eave the Options menu.
6. Press to eave the main menu.
5.5.2 Using the manua saving function
To do so: The device has to be in the Data Log menu (see
"Data Log menu" page 5). The device is set to Data
Log Time - Manua .
1. Press .
» The disp ay wi now appear as in figure 20 and the
disc symbo wi be preceded by the digit one.
2. Press to enter a name for the saved reading
and to finish the measuring process.
» The disp ay wi now appear as shown in figure 21.
3. The data you have inputted can be overwritten at
any time.

5.6 Saving severa readings (a measurement series) at the same time
To do so: The device has to be in the Data Log menu.
1. Take severa readings (see "5. The measuring process").
2. To save a reading, press as soon as the reading has been taken.
» The disp ay wi now appear as shown in figure 23.
The marked number shows the number of rea-
dings that have a ready been saved.
3. Press to enter a name for the saved series
of measurements and to finish the measuring
process.
» The disp ay wi now appear as shown in figure 24.
4. The data you have inputted can be overwritten at
any time.
