1.2 About the Manuals
The Equipment Manual describes the hardware aspects of your SCOTTY
system, serving as a valuable source of information both for users and
administrators.
The Software Manual accompanies the Equipment Manual. It describes the
software aspects of your SCOTTY system, and is geared toward the user and
administrator.
Both manuals help you take full advantage of your SCOTTY solution. They are
not only a comprehensive guide to the operation of the system, they also
provide technical details, simple step by step instructions on how to perform
the most common applications, and more. We recommend you read the
manuals carefully in order to fully benefit from SCOTTY's advanced solutions.
Furthermore, Quick Reference Guides are available describing the basic
functionality on a single page –these are suitable for daily use.
Details about the notebook used as part of the SCOTTY Mobile HD are covered
by a separate set of documentation. This documentation is installed on the
notebook itself and available through the SCOTTY Teleport Manual menu.

2Introduction
2.1 Scope
This document covers the specifications, including interface control, usage
and maintenance of the following component:
SD208555A SCOTTY Mobile HD and variants
The SCOTTY Mobile HD
The system uses a ruggedized notebook placed on a high performance
communication box located underneath.

2.2 System Overview
The SCOTTY Mobile HD delivers superior full high definition video and audio,
even over satellite or other challenging networks with bandwidth constraints
and high latency.
Based on a built-in camera, a microphone and speakers, the system is ready
for high quality video and data communication.
The system supports both common videoconference standards and SCOTTY
proprietary, highly optimized communication protocols. By providing bi-
directional low latency real time communication, unidirectional live video
streaming and video recording for store-and-forward applications, many
different application requirements can be fulfilled. Parallel data channels
enable bidirectional communication of supplementary data and also remote
control of cameras and other equipment.
The platform supports a wide range of video interfaces like Composite, HD-
SDI, HDMI, DVI, and VGA with resolutions of up to 1080p60. Highly adaptable
audio interfaces support a wide range of signal requirements. Flexible data
interfaces support various data sources which can be integrated in the
communication setup.
The SCOTTY Mobile HD is based on a rugged 15.6” notebook providing PC
interfaces like LAN and USB. An internal solid state disk is used for the
operating software –Microsoft Windows –and is available for storage of user
data. The proven SCOTTY Teleporter provides a flexible, highly configurable
user interface for the communication box.
Featuring internal batteries, the system may be used for several hours
without the need for a mains supply.
Excellent EMC characteristics allow employment in setups required to fulfill
Zone 2 –NATO SDIP 27 Class C (AMSG 784).

3Operation
3.1 Protector Case
The SCOTTY Mobile HD is mounted in a watertight, shock resistant and
dustproof carrying case.
To open the case rotate the number wheels to the correct combination, then
slide the lock tab (see below) to the right.
On delivery the combination is set to “000”.
To set a new combination:
3.2 System Components
The SCOTTY Mobile HD is based on a rugged 15.6” notebook employing a full
HD (1920x1080) sunlight readable display. The notebook sits on the SCOTTY
communication box containing the communication system and the power
supply.
A high quality, high resolution camera is used as the local video source. An
integrated camera microphone or an included gooseneck microphone may be
used as audio source. Two speakers are located in the front of the
communication box. The notebook display is used to display local and/or
received video.

3.4 AC Power Operation
The system may be powered using the internal wide range AC power supply.
The power connector is located on the left side of the communication box.
When not used, the power cord can be folded and stowed without
disconnecting from the communication box.
Power cord stowed for transport
3.5 Battery Operation
When no mains power is available, operation is possible using the built in
rechargeable batteries. The notebook is then powered by its internal battery,
whereas the communication box uses its own battery.
For replacing the batteries see chapter Maintenance.
3.6 Network Connection
The notebook Gigabit LAN interface is used to connect the system to the
network.
By default, the SCOTTY Mobile HD uses DHCP and will setup the network
address automatically.

3.7 Communication Box Connections
The notebook provides “typical” computer interfaces like USB 3.0. The
communication box allows flexible use of external video and audio
equipment.
For details, see chapter Connectors and Pin-Outs.
3.8 Status LEDs
Three LED’s on the left side of the unit provide information on the
communication box status.
SCOTTY Mobile HD Status LEDs
ACT Communication box is active.
BATT Communication box battery charge level.
PWR Mains power connected.
The PWR LED indicates that mains power is available. In this case both the
communication box and the notebook batteries are being charged.
The ACT LED indicates that the system is active. Mains power is used if
available; otherwise the system operates on battery power.
A slow flashing ACT LED (1Hz) indicates that the battery level is low (less than
5%) or the communication box temperature is close to the operational limits.
A fast flashing ACT LED (4Hz) indicates that the battery level is very low (less
than 1%) or the communication box temperature is above the operational
limits. In either case the system communication box is switched off
immediately.
The BATT LED indicates the current battery charging level while the
communication box battery is being charged and/or while the communication

box is active. When the battery is fully charged the BATT LED is constantly on,
otherwise the LED flashes once per second to indicate the charge level. Short
flashes indicate a low battery level, longer flashes a higher level. The LED is
switched off when the battery level is very low (less than 1%).
3.9 Setting up the Gooseneck Microphone
To provide superior audio quality the system is equipped with a gooseneck
microphone. For transport the microphone is stored in the front of
communication box, for operation it is plugged into the “Mic” connector on
the back right side of the SCOTTY Mobile HD.

3.10 Starting the SCOTTY Mobile HD
After pressing the power button of the notebook the system will turn on and
boot up Windows.
The communication box is activated as soon as the notebook is powered on.
For operation, the three cables (data, power, and camera) on the rear side of the notebook
must be properly installed.
3.11 Microphone Selection
Either the integrated camera microphone or the gooseneck microphone may
be used as local audio source.

The microphone sensitivity can be selected in the Teleporter Application /
Options / Audio… dialog. For the integrated camera microphone use the
“Camera” control, for the gooseneck microphone use the “Mic” control.
For more details, please refer to the Software Manual.
3.12 Software Configuration
To allow optimal operation, the software settings of the SCOTTY Mobile HD
need to match the equipment used.
Therefore, especially the codec audio and video settings in the Config Utility
and in the Teleport application should be configured as required.
Please refer to the chapter Connectors and Pin-Outs for the signal labels
cross-referenced by software and hardware.
For configuration details, please refer to the Software Manual.
3.13 Turning Off the System
The preferred way to power down the system is to close the software and to
shut down Windows; see the Software Manual for details.
The unit can also be turned off by pressing the notebook power button.
Pushing the button will gracefully shutdown Windows.
Holding the notebook power button for more than four seconds will result in
an immediate power off without shutting down Windows first.
If the system is not shut down in the correct fashion, data-loss can occur.
The communication box will be deactivated automatically after notebook shutdown is
complete.
