Seagate ST9250317AS - Momentus 5400 FDE 250 GB Hard... User manual

You can do drive management the hard way or the easy way—but you
have to do it.
Drives come to the end of their useful life and have to be destroyed.
Or they require long-term storage. Or they have to be returned for repairs.
Or degaussed. Or used for a new purpose. Or sold on eBay. Or—
You get the idea. Managed.
Drive management is a big headache for IT departments and a big potential
source of data security breaches. As it’s usually practiced, drive management
involves many steps and many people. It can be costly, prone to human errors
and hard to audit. You may have strict data management policies, but they
can be difficult to enforce and can inhibit employee productivity.
That’s data management the hard way. Fortunately there is also an easy way:
self-encrypting hard drives.
The beauty of self-encrypting drives is that the data on them is scrambled and
impossible to access without proper authentication. Thus no matter who gets
hold of them, the data is unavailable—secure.
Remember, when we talk about drive management, we’re not only talking
about an IT headache. At a deeper level we’re talking about data security.
If you didn’t care who saw the data on your drives, you wouldn’t need drive
management policies, other than for theft prevention. But so much data these
days is sensitive for so many different reasons that data security is essential.
The problem is that all digital data is created and stored at some point in time
on a hard drive that will eventually leave your control.
Without designed-in, hardware-based security at the core of where all digital
data lives, you can never truly be digitally secure.
Seagate provides that designed-in, hardware-based security in its self-
encrypting hard drives for laptop PCs. The Seagate®Momentus®5400 FDE.3
drive delivers up to 320 GB of secure digital storage using award-winning
Seagate Secure™technology. The enterprise management features of that
technology enable self-encrypting drives to interface with management
software for easy enterprise deployments. All data is automatically encrypted
when it’s written to the drive.

Government-Grade Security Without
Performance Impacts
The encryption technology itself is government-
grade according to the standards of the U.S.
National Security Agency’s National Security
Telecommunications and Information Systems
Security Policy (NSTISSP) No. 11. The Seagate
Secure encryption engine is hardware-based,
so it delivers security without the overhead—no
processor utilization, no time delays. You won’t
even know you’re encrypting. It’s transparent
encryption all the time, every time you save a
document and every time you open a document.
In addition to the government-grade
encryption algorithm, the drive offers optional
Seagate Secure technology for full enterprise
manageability. The Momentus 5400 FDE.3 drive
ships in the following capacities and features:
160 GB and 320 GB with 8 MB of cache and
a SATA 3Gb/s interface with NCQ. This drive
transfers data at an internal speed of 1.1 Gb/s
and with ultra-quiet acoustics of 2.3 bels at idle
and 2.6 bels during operation. You can’t hear
this protection and you can’t see it, but make no
mistake—the Momentus 5400 FDE.3 laptop drive
is best-in-class data security for storage that
leaves your site/sight.
Seagate Secure technology includes advanced
firmware that allows for pre-boot authentication in
the form of biometrics, passwords or smart cards.
In addition, the technology delivers secure erase,
password hashing, password escrowing and
many more features not available in non-Seagate
Secure enterprise drives. Key management is
simplified—the encryption key doesn’t leave the
drive. Secure disposal and repurposing can be
done instantaneously.
Two Integration Methods—Your Choice
The Momentus 5400 FDE.3 drive can be
integrated in two easy ways to deliver flexibility or
manageability:
BIOS password managed—BIOS password
management is a simple and easy way to
authenticate a Seagate Secure self-encrypting
hard drive. A BIOS password can serve as the
authentication layer that will lock out users who
do not have the correct password. Since options
can vary from BIOS version to BIOS version,
check with your system manufacturer to find out if
your BIOS supports this function.
If it does, the BIOS password function is an
easy way to utilize your Seagate Secure drive to
prevent unauthorized users getting access to
your data when your laptop is not in your control.
However, the user is responsible for remembering
or safekeeping of the password. If it is forgotten
or lost, you have absolutely no way of accessing
that drive and all the data you have on it.
Enterprise managed—Enterprise managed is
for organizations that need to comply with data
protection regulations and for those who want to
manage and control additional security features,
including the escrowing of passwords, secure
drive erasure, security auditing and much more.
The enterprise management capabilities
of Seagate Secure technology enable IT
departments to manage the security features
of the drive via an enterprise security server. In
fact, IT departments can manage multi-user and
admin passwords that can invoke multi-factor
logins as well as single sign-on and crypto erase
functionality without ever touching the laptop.
This can be done for a handful of laptop PCs
or a worldwide enterprise. The management is
all done via independent software vendors who
have designed security management software to
integrate with Seagate Secure technology.
Easily Manage Drives
and Data Security
Keep in mind, this is a much more comprehensive
solution and deployment, and it requires security
management software from an independent
software vendor. For a list of Seagate Secure
independent software vendors, visit www.

Protect Your Data—Rest Easy
Corporations and individuals all over the world in
every type of business, government officers and
private citizens have a need to protect themselves
from digital data breaches or personal data
theft. So many things can happen to remove a
given hard drive from your direct supervision that
you need a password-protected solution that’s
“always on.”
It’s called self-encryption. Get it now.
OEMs, system builders: Increase your security
value without revamping your platform, with
government-grade encryption and enterprise
manageability. Seagate is the standard for self-
encrypting storage today.
Strategic IT: Keep your company out of the
penalty box. Adopt the strongest compliance with
government data regulations—encryption with
authentication. No need to constantly monitor
new laws and standards—just adopt the strongest
available method.
End users: Relax—your data is safe with a
Seagate Secure solution!
