2. WARNING - TO AVOID ELECTRICAL SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE TO RAIN - STORE INDOORS.
3. Thiscleaner should be operatedonly on100or120 volts at60 cycles.
4. RECOMMENDEDGROUNDINGMETHOD.
DO NOT,UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES,REMOVE THE POWER SUPPLY CORDGROUND
PRONG. For yourpersonal safety, thisappliancemust be grounded.Thisappliance is equipped
with a powersupplycordhaving a 3-pronggroundingplug. To minimizepossibleshockhazard it
must be pluggedinto a mating3-pronggroundingtypewallreceptacle,grounded in accordance
with the NationalElectricalCode and localcodes and ordinances. Ifa matingwallreceptacle is
not available, itisthe personalresponsibility and obligation ofthe customer to have a properly
grounded 3-prongwallreceptacleinstalled bya qualifiedelectrician.
5. The powercord should always be disconnectedfrom the electricaloutletbefore the recoverytank
is emptied, the solutiontank is refilled orthe cleaner is serviced inany way.
6. DONOT storethiscleaner inan areawhich may reachfreezingtemperatures.Shouldthisoccur.
DONOT operatethiscleaneruntil ithas been at roomtemperature forat least (2) hours.
7. DONOTuseany cleaningsolution or chemicalsotherthanthosediscussed in thismanual.
8. DONOT pick up combustiblematerialssuch as gasoline, solvents, hot coals, or livesparks.
9. NEVER allowchildren to operate cleaner, nor shouldtheyplaywithcleaner asa toy.
10. Thiscleanercontains a suds-sensitivefloatsystemwhichshuts offthe suctionwhen the water or
sudspicked upbythe cleanerreaches a certain level inthe uppercontainer.When the suction is
shutoff, to continueyourcleaning,turn offthe cleaner,emptyupper container, wipesudsfrom
float system and continuecleaning.When a highlysudsysolution is beingvacuumed up,the
float systemwillactivate bythe sudslevel andnotthe waterlevel;therefore, ifthe amount of
water inthe containerdoes not appear tobea largequantity, donotbe alarmed, the float is
working properly. Theuseof Formula #2 (defoamer)willreduce or eliminatethis condition.
11. If yourcleaner is accidentlyturnedover while youare cleaning, the float may activate and shut
off the suction. If this occurs, setthe cleaner upright, turn the powerswitch"off" andlet motor
come toa completestop:thenturnswitchback"on" to continuecleaning.
12. For maximum efficiency, emptycontainer frequently and keepinside of hose,wands,nozzle and
container clean.
13. DONOT overwet carpet or upholstery. If three or morecleaningstrokes are required, letthe
carpet or upholsterymaterial dryand thenrepeatcleaningprocess.

Withpropercare and maintenance, it shouldprovide you with years of service. Itis importantthat you
read thismanual to fullyunderstand the cleaner'scapabilities as well as providing you with the essentials
regardingmaintenance and safety. A completelist of operatingparts and features are shownbelow in
Figure 1.

intake. (Vacuuminlet)
5. Attachsolutiontubing to solutiontank by insert-
ing plasticinsertintoplasticcoupling.
NOTE: To removeplasticinsertdepress Taband
gently pull on plasticinsert. Be careful notto pull
on tubing as damage may occur.
— PREPARATION-
VACUUM CARPET

1. For bestcleaningresults itis recommendedthat
the carpet be vacuumed to removeloose dirt
before using the Cleaner.
PRETREAT CARPET (IF NEEDED)
See Figure 7.
1. To remove stains and ground in soil present in
heavy trafficareas ofthe carpet,spray orrub
Sears spotter(Formula #3) intocarpetbefore us-
ingthe cleaner.Followdirections onthe bottle.
FILLINGCLEANERWITH WATER AND
CLEANINGSOLUTION

1. Add Sears Formula #1 carpetcleaningsolution or
SearsFormula #4 upholsterycleaningsolution to
supplytank(depending on type of cleaning tobe
performed). Followdirections on label of bottle.
2. Pourclean hot water(fromtap)intoFillerOpening
in the SupplyTank - use 2 gallons of water.
3. CloseFillerOpening.
NOTE: Thisunit may becomedamaged if boiling
water is used.

1. If carpet has previouslybeencleanedwithregular
shampoo, itmaybe necessary toadd defoamer,
Formula #2, to the recoverytank by raising
Latches and lifting Power Headfrom the Re-
covery Tank. Followdirections on bottle.

1. Unwrap Power Cord from Power Head and plug

NOTE: The "Hi"pumpspeed is used for normal
cleaning and "lo"pumpspeed is used for delicate
upholstery or light cleaning.

TESTING FOR SOLUTION SPRAY

1. Hold FloorNozzleabovefloor level.
2. PullSolutionReleaseTrigger on AngleWand.

3. ObserveFloorNozzle to makesurecleaning
solution is beingsprayedevenlyfrom two points.
NOTE: If solution isnot beingsprayedfromboth
points, refer to "Service Hint" section of this
manual.
CLEANING THE CARPET
See Figures 13 and14.
SolutionDispensingStroke
1. Start ata corner(recommended).
2. PlaceFloorNozzleflush with carpet.
3. Whileexerting light pressuredown on floor
nozzle,depressSolutionReleaseTrigger and
slowly pull FloorNozzletowardsyou.
NOTE: Donot overwet carpet - See "Rules For Safe
Operation" on page 2, Rule#13.
Solution Recovery Stroke
1. ReleaseSolutionReleaseTrigger.
2. Repeat the pickup stroke oneortwo times
without spray. To accomplish this, release the
Solution Trigger and lift the Floor Nozzle off
carpet, return Floor Nozzle to point
where you dispensed cleaning solution, and
recover dirty solution.

WHEN TO EMPTYRECOVERYTANK
See Figure 15.
Duringnormaloperation,yourcleaner may stop
recovering solutionfromyourcarpet.Whenthis oc-
cursthere are threecheckpoints to alertyou:
1. An increase in motornoise.
2. No solutionvisiblybeingrecovered by yourfloor
nozzle.
3. Noair comingfrom the exhaustpart of your
cleaner.
When this occurs:
1. The Recovery Tank is full andthe FloatValve in
the recoverytank has beenactivated.
2. The Recovery Tank has foam inthe tank andthe
float valve has beenactivated.
HOWTO EMPTYRECOVERYTANK
See Figure 16.
1. Turn Power Switch "off".
2. DisconnectPowerCordFrom The WallOutlet.
3. DisconnectPumpCordlocatedbetweenSolu-
tion Tank and recoverytank.
4. Disconnectlargevacuumhose by depressing
the Lock Button and remove.
5. Push Tab inward on Plastic Coupling and remove
plasticinsert and tubing. See Detail"A",Figure
16.
6. LiftLatches on Power Head.
7. LiftPowerHead, by Handle, and removefrom
recovery tank.
8. Remove Recovery Tank fromSolutionTank.
9. EmptyRecoveryTank.Note: If foam is observed
in RecoveryTank, add SearsDefoamer(Formula
#2). Followdirections on bottle.
10. Reassemble inthe reverse of removal and
resumecleaning.

There are threerecommendedmethods of emptying
the SolutionTank.
a) DisconnectPumpCordfromRecoveryTank,
remove recovery tankfromSolutionTank and
poursolution outof filleropening.
b) Placefloornozzle in bath tubor container.
Depress solution releasetrigger and continue
spraying untilsolution isno longerobserved
spraying throughfloor nozzle.
c) Remove floornozzle and insertwandintosolution
tank through filleropening and vacuum solution
out. Discardsolution in recoverytank by follow-
ing stepsdescribedunder"How to Empty
Recovery Tank".
ADDITIONAL USE

Remove the recoverytankfrom the solution if
desired. BE SURESOLUTIONTANKPOWER
CORD IS DISCONNECTED.
Assemble the hose and wands.Inserthose into
the exhaust port ofthe power head.

3. Alwaystest the fabric inan inconspicuousarea tobe sure that itis colorfast,does not
shrink andisnot damaged bythe rubbingaction ofthe nozzle.
4. To preventfabricstaining and damage to internalmaterials, DONOT SOAK FABRIC. If
fabric is heavilysoiled and requiresmorethan two passeswith the cleaningsolution,allow
fabric todry completely. After drying,cleanareaagain ata rightangle tothe originalclean-
ing stroke.
5. If cleaningsolution "pools" on fabric,discontinue useto avoiddamaging the internalpor-
tions of upholsteredfurniture.
ASSEMBLY AND FILLING
1. Assemblesolutiontank,recoverytank and hoses asyou
would for carpetcleaning. Donot assemblestraight
wands or floornozzle.
2. Assembleupholsterynozzledirectly to curvedwand. Be
sure lockingbuttonsnapsintohole in nozzle.
3. Slidespraybody on underside of nozzletoward the
threaded portion ofthe curvedwand and tightennut.
(Figure 1).
4. Fillsolutiontankwith hottap water asyou would for
carpet cleaning.
5. Add Sears Formula 4 (Number 20-8984) Upholstery
Cleaning Solution.Followdirections on bottle for mix-
ing solution.CAUTION - USE ONLY SEARS 20-8984
CLEANING SOLUTION OR UPHOLSTERY DAMAGE
MAY OCCUR.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Use yourhouseholdvacuumcleaner to vacuum
upholsterythoroughly to remove all loose dirt.
2. Place the upholsterynozzle onthe surface tobe clean-
ed. Keep the slottedintakeflatagainst the fabric atall
times.(Figure 2).
3. Pull the spraytrigger and pull the nozzletowardyou.
Clean a smallarea ata time,usingshortslightly overlap-
pingstrokes.Additionalstrokeswithvacuumonly
without solution willhelp todry fabric.
4. To retain the clean"see through" appearance ofthe noz-
zle, washwithlukewarm dish detergentsolution and
rinse aftereachcleaningtask.
CLEANING HINTS
1. To cleanfabricwelts(seams or cording)cleaningstrokeshould be parallel tothe welt.Depress to flattenwelt.
Thoroughlyvacuum on both sides of welt to removeexcess moisture.
2. Metal buttons can rust and stainfabric. After cleaning, dry buttonsthoroughly,includingunderside,with a
whitetowel or cloth.
3. Ifyougetany woodenpartswet,wipe dryat once. Theuseofa goodfurniture polish is recommended for care
of the wood.
4. Ifthe upholsteryfabric was previouslytreatedwith a stain repellant it should be retreatedafter the fabric has
beencleaned andis completelydry.
5. OTHERUSES FOR UPHOLSTERYNOZZLE. The upholsterynozzle may also be used to clean car upholstery or
carpeting. In addition, the nozzle may also be used to cleancarpetedstairs and otherareasdifficult to clean
with the normalfloornozzle.

A. Remove small nut from endof spraybody.Removebrass
tipand washerfromrecess in spraybody. With tweezers
or pin,removefilterinside.(Figure 1) Rinsefilterwith
clean water.
B. Inspectbrassspraytip. If clogged,removeobstruction
with pinor needle.(Figure 2).
C. Reassembleparts by reversingaboveprocedure.
2. If sprayconnectionsleak:
A. Disassemble nutat leakingconnection.
B. Checkwasher. Be sure itis properlyseated.
C. Reassemble nutand tightensecurely.
