SAFETY FIRST
Introduction tto tthe ssubject

Why hhave sseat bbelts?
It hhas bbeen roven tthat sseat bbelts
give ggood rotection iin aaccidents. IIn
most ccountries, ttherefore, tthe wwear-
ing oof sseat bbelts iis rrequired bby llaw.
Warning
•
The bbelts sshould bbe ut oon
before eevery jjourney –– eeven iin
town ttraffic. TThis aalso aalies tto
rear sseats.
Pregnant wwomen ttoo sshould
always wwear aa sseat bbelt. TThis iis tthe
only wway tto gguarantee rotection
for tthe uunborn cchild! FFor mmore
information oon tthis oint lease
see age 11.11.
•
The rrouting oof tthe bbelt iis oof
major iim ortance tto tthe rotective
effect oof tthe bbelt.
How tthe bbelt sshould bbe wworn iis
described oon tthe nnext ages.
This illustration shows a car driving
towards a wall. The vehicle occu ants are
not belted in.
The hysical rinci le of a frontal crash is
easy to ex lain.
As soon as the vehicle is moving, so-
called “kinetic energy” is created by the
movement of the vehicle , in the vehicle
itself as well as in the vehicle occu ants.
The extent of the “kinetic energy” effect
de ends largely on the s eed of the vehi-
cle and on the weight of the vehicle and
the vehicle occu ants.
The higher the s eed and the greater the
weight of the vehicle, the more energy
must be dis ersed should an accident
occur.
SEAT BELTS ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
1.3
SAFETY FIRST
Seat bbelts
B1H-118

The s eed of the vehicle is, however, the
more im ortant factor. If, for exam le, the
s eed increases from 25 km/h to 50 km/h,
the kinetic energy increases fourfold!
As the vehicle occu ants in our exam le
are wearing no seat belts, their entire
kinetic energy can only be dis ersed
through the crash into the wall, should a
crash occur. The consequences would be
severe or ossibly even fatal injuries.
If you are driving at a s eed of only
30 km/h to 50 km/h, forces which can
easily exceed 1000 kg are exerted on the
body should an accident occur.
The forces exerted on the body will
increase further at higher s eeds, e.g. At
twice the s eed the forces increase four-
fold!
Vehicle occu ants not wearing their seat
belts are thus not “linked” to their vehi-
cle.
In a frontal crash, these eo le will con-
tinue to move forward at the same s eed
as the vehicle was travelling before the
vehicle crashed!
1.4
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– SEAT BELTS
SAFETY FIRST
B1H-119 AR9-000

In case of a frontal collision accident, the
occu ants who are not belted u are
thrown forwards and collide with arts of
the vehicle interior, e.g. the steering
wheel, instrument anel or windscreen.
Vehicle occu ants who are not belted in
may even be thrown out of the vehicle.
This could even lead to serious injuries.
The wide s read o inion that you can ro-
tect your body with your hands in the
event of a light accident is not correct.
Even at low s eeds of collision, forces
which cannot be deflected act on the
body.
It is also im ortant that occu ants sitting
in the rear seats are belted in as they can
also be thrown out of the vehicle in the
event of an accident. Somebody sitting in
the rear and not using a seat belt is
endangering not only himself but also the
occu ants of the front seats.

Protecting sseat bbelts
Seat belts which are worn ro erly con-
tribute to the correct seating osition of
the vehicle’s occu ants. The seat belts
hel reduce kinetic energy considerably.
They also revent uncontrollable move-
ments which can also be the cause of
severe injuries.
Vehicle occu ants who wear their seat
belts correctly benefit greatly from the
fact that kinetic energy is absorbed by the
belt. The vehicle front structure and other
assive safety measures, such as the Air
Bag System, also guarantee a reduction
in kinetic energy. The energy created is
thus ke t to a low level and the risk of
injury reduced.
Our exam les describe frontal crashes.
These hysical rinci les also a ly, of
course, to other ty es of accidents and to
vehicles with the Air Bag System.
This is why you
must
ut on your seat belt
before every journey, even if you are only
going “just around the corner”. Please
also ensure that your assengers are cor-
rectly belted in.
You have seen how seat belts function in
the case of an accident on revious
ages.
Accident statistics have roven that the
risk of injury is reduced and the chance of
survival in a serious accident is increased
if the seat belt is worn ro erly.
For this reason, the wearing of seat belts
is a legal requirement in most countries.
The correct method of wearing the seat
belt, and how the Air Bag System func-
tions, is described on the following
ages.

In case of a severe frontal collision the
system is activated by sensors which trig-
