This product may be installed in factory built fireplaces which
meet the minimum opening size of 14” deep by 28” wide by
16 1/2” high.

INSTALLATION DATA
Model ZCI-25/1300 Gas Insert comes assembled with glass
front. Remove all packaging materials around glass before
operation of appliance. Install logs and coals as shown on
page 10 before operation.
An optional heat circulating blower is available for this unit.
The fan is thermostatically controlled to turn on and off
automatically for optimum performance. A three-wire
grounded extension cord with plug is included and should
be connected to a properly grounded receptical.
No electrical supply is required for the gas system opera-
tion. The self generating pilot provides current for the
Burner On/Off Switch. Do not wire to 110 volt AC outlet!

This fireplace must be installed in accordance with these instructions. Read carefully ALL the instructions in
this manual first. Consult the building authority having jurisdiction to determine the need for a permit prior
to beginning the installation.

SPECIAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
- Due to high temperatures, the appliance should be
located out of traffic and away from furniture and
draperies.
- Advise all adults and especially children to be alert to
the hazard of high surface temperatures and that they
should stay away to avoid burns or clothing ignition.
- Supervise young children when they are in the same
room as the appliance.
- Never place clothing or flammable material on or
near the appliance.
- It is important that the control compartments, burn-
ers and circulating air passageways of the appliance
be kept clean.
- Installation and repair should be done by a qualified
service person (licensed gas fitter). The appliance
should be inspected before use and at least annually
by a qualified service person. More frequent cleaning
may be required due to excessive lint from carpeting,
bedding material, etc.
- Do not use this appliance if any part has been under
water. Immediately call a qualified service technician
to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the
control system which as been under water.
NOTE: This unit must be installed in accordance with
the latest edition of the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI
Z223.1 (USA) or CAN/CGA B-149 (Canada) and any
local codes.
The appliance, when installed, must be electrically ground-
ed in accordance with local codes or, in the absence of local
codes, with the latest edition of the National Electrical
Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, or CSA-C22.2 (CANADA)

LEVELING FEET
Independent leveling feet are provided on the rear and front corners of the insert to
allow for uneven hearth floor.
If necessary, loosen locking screws and adjust to level insert.

GAS CONNECTION
• A shut-off valve must be installed to allow the appliance to
be serviced.
• Burner assembly with pilot safety control comes complete-
ly assembled from the factory.
• Connect a 3/8” N.P.T. line to the inlet of the control valve
through hole provided in right side of the outer housing.
• Connections should be made so that the assembly can be
removed at a later date for servicing.
• The appliance and its individual shutoff valve must be dis-
connected from the gas supply piping system, during any
pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of
1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
• The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply piping
system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve dur-
ing any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at
test pressures equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.4 kPa).
• Provide a 1/8 inch N.P.T. plugged tapping, accessible for
test gauge connection, immediately upstream of the gas
supply connection to the appliance.
WARNING: When purging the gas line, the glass front must be
removed.
GAS LINE CONDUIT INSTALLATION
FOR FACTORY BUILT FIREPLACES
(For units equipped with gas line knock-outs. These units
have a circular knock-out in the side refractory brick).
For the installation of the gas line check local codes and
employ a qualified installer. The fireplace has provisions for
installation of an approved vented gas fireplace installed in
accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1.
1. For the gas line conduit installation you require one,
19mm (3/4”) nominal diameter nipple, 152mm (6”) long and
two, 25mm (1”) diameter electric conduit locknuts to fit the
pipe.
2. Remove the side refractory by first removing the hearth
front, and the three screws securing the fireplace dome
shield. Then wedge the dome shield clear of the side refrac-
tory panel. Remove the wedge and replace the screws and
hearth front when the gas line installation is complete.
Knock out the hole in the refractory (lower centre) using a
hammer and chisel. There are also two sheet metal knock-
outs in the firebox lining and outer casing. Remove them.
3. Pass the pipe through both sheet metal holes and fasten
using the 1” diamter nuts. The pipe should be flush with the
back of the refractory. Re-install the refractory.
4. Have a qualified installer install the GAS LINE.

If the factory-built fireplace has no gas access hole(s) provid-
ed, an access hole of 1 inch (25mm) or less may be drilled
through the lower sides or bottom of the firebox in a proper
workmanship-like manner. This access hole must be
plugged with non-combustible insultation after the gas sup-
ply line has been installed.

VENTING
THIS GAS APPLIANCE MUST HAVE ITS OWN VENT. DO
NOT INTERCONNECT IT WITH ANY OTHER APPLIANCE.
• To ensure proper venting action, this appliance must
be properly connected to a 3” diameter type B-1 vent
or a listed chimney liner. (see Liner Installation
Instructions.) Minimum vent height 8’ vertical.
• Refer to the latest edition of the National Fuel Gas
Code ANSI Z223.1 (USA) or CAN/CGA B-149
(Canada) for proper vent installation.
• Remove any chimney flue damper or permanently
block it open.
• Chimney should be cleaned and inspected before
installation.
• Chimney cleanouts must be tight fitting or be sealed
to prevent air from leaking into the chimney.
• This appliance is equipped with a built-in backflow
diverter (draft hood). No additional draft hood is
required for the installation.
• The draft hood is designed to be located in the same
atmospheric pressure zone as the combustion air
inlet. Do not block openings in front face to fireplace
cavity.
• The B-1 Vent or listed liner can be installed directly
on top of the flue collar of the appliance. The inner
flue of the vent fits outside the flue collar. (See illus-
tration below.) The vent is then secured with three
sheet metal screws.
• This appliance needs fresh air for safe operation and
must be installed so there are provisions for adequate
combustion and ventilation air. Follow the latest edi-
tion of ANSI Z223.1 (USA) or CAN/CGA B-149
(Canada) requirements.
• Check periodically that the vent is unrestricted and a
proper draft is present when the unit is in operation.
(See “Checking Proper Vent Action,” Page 7.)

As with any natural drafted appliances, the vent cap
must always extend a minimum of 2’ above any struc-
ture within a 10’ horizontal plane.
LINER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Any 3” chimney liner (single or double wall) approved for
use with gas appliances can be used with the appliance.
Follow all installation instructions, warnings and clearances
to combustibles as provided by the liner manufacturer.
1. Make sure chimney has been cleaned and inspected.
2. Remove flue damper or permanently block open if it is
large enough to allow for passage of the 3” flue liner.
3. Insert chimney liner from top of chimney and attach to
the flue collar of the appliance using at least 3 sheet metal
screws or a clamp.
Masonry Installation: If fireplace opening size limits access,
follow this procedure (see illustration below) to allow flue
collar to be connected to vent before appliance is inserted
into cavity.
a. Remove the flue collar assembly from the appliance by
removing the mounting screw in the top front flange lift-
ing flue collar up and pull forward.
b. Attach the chimney liner to the flue collar, as in Step No. 3
above.
c. With flue collar assembly suspended inside fireplace cav-
ity, begin inserting appliance into cavity.
d. Guide flue collar into position as you continue to insert
appliance.
e. Resecure with mounting screw.
f. Upon completion of installation, check for proper venting
action.

FACTORY BUILT FIREPLACES
Warning: Failure to position the parts in accordance
with these instructions or failure to use parts specifical-
ly approved with this appliance may result in property
damage or personal injury.
1. The installer must attach the markings supplied
with the gas insert to the fireplace into which the fac-
tory built insert is installed. The marking must be
mechanically installed to the side of the firebox.
2. No cutting of any sheet metal parts of the factory
built fireplace which the gas insert is installed.
3. The factory built fireplace flue damper can be fully
blocked open or removed for installation of the gas
insert.
4. The factory built chimney and or vent must be clean
and in good working order and constructed of non-
combustible materials.
5. Chimney cleanouts must fit properly.
6. Trim panel or surrounds shall not inhibit air flow to
ventilation openings in the factory built fireplaces.

CHECKING PROPER VENT ACTION
Periodically check for proper vent action and at least
annually inspect venting system for any blockage.
1. Operate appliance for at least 15 minutes with heat
circulating fan off.
2. Using a match or cigarette, check to see that air is
being drawn into draft hood located behind the top
air outlet grill (see illustration below).

VENT SAFETY PROGRAM
This fireplace is equipped with a vent safety shutdown
switch. This switch is factory installed, wired and test-
ed. Check and make sure the switch and wires are in
the proper position. The safety switch is heat activated
and wired in series with the pilot system.
For your safety this product may shut down when
ambient room temperature exceeds 90°F (32°C).
To maintain optimal room temperature we recommend
the use of an optional wall thermostat.
Note: Operation of this fireplace, when not connected
to a properly installed and maintained venting system
or tampering with the vent safety shutoff system, can
result in carbon monoxide (co) poisoning and possibly
death.

1. Align mounting holes in face assembly with mounting holes in outer
flanges of insert and secure with sheet metal screws provided.
2. Install top grill with 5 louvers using two sheet metal screws provided.
3. Install bottom grill with 5 louvers by securing hinges to tabs in base of unit
with screws provided (2 per side).
TRIM KIT INSTALLATION
NOTE: The installation and testing of the fireplace insert should be complete before
installing trim kit.

GLASS REMOVAL /INSTALLATION
1. Remove the two (2) screws in the glass frame.
2. Tilt the bottom edge of the glass outward and lift glass up
and off firebox.
3. Re-install all parts in reverse order.
GLASS MAINTENANCE
1. Never attempt to clean the glass with the unit operating or
hot. The glass will usually remain clean, but any dirt
should be removed using an approved glass cleaner or
soap and water. Do not use abrasives, oil, wax-type clean-
ers or cleaners containing ammonia to clean the glass.
2. Inspect the glass regularly for cracks or breaks. If found,
turn the fireplace off immediately and replace the glass.
Special high temperature ceramic glass is required. Use
only replacement glass from Selkirk.
Note: As a direct result of the performance and efficiency of
the unit, you will notice condensation forming on the glass
upon start-up. This condition is normal and should disappear
in a few minutes.
LOGS & COALS
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Note: Improper log installation may result in poor lighting
and combustion or other unsafe conditions. This appliance
comes equipped with a four-piece log set as labeled below.
Also, included is a package of material to provide the look
of glowing coals or ashes. Do not use any materials not
approved by Selkirk for flame enhancement.
1. Remove all packaging materials from logs and from
inside combustion chamber.
2. Place the rear log in the back of the combustion cham-
ber. It should rest against the stops behind the rear
burner and be centered left to right.
3. Place the front log in between the front and rear burn-
er. The flat back of the log should rest against the stops
on each side of the burner, and the notch in the bottom
of the log should be located over the burner carry-over
channel.
4. Install coals. Place coal material in front of burner row.
Do not place on rear burner row. Leave material in a
loose condition. Make sure lighting is not affected.
5. Install right twig. Rest twig on notches on rear and
front log as illustrated.
6. Install left twig. Rest twig on notches on rear and front
log as illustrated.
7. Reinstall glass front. Do not operate with glass
removed!
Note: Once logs are in position, light the burner and
observe the flame pattern. Flames must not impinge heav-
ily on log. Lighting should be instantaneous and rear
flames should not impinge heavily on twigs. The front
burner may impinge on front log, but should not produce
carbon buildup.

OPTIONAL BLOWER OPERATION
The optional blower installed on this unit is thermostati-
cally controlled to turn on and off automatically for opti-
mum performance.
Turn blower on or off manually by rotating control knob to
desired setting.
Select desired fan speed by rotating control knob to desired
setting.
BLOWER REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Turn off gas and electricity to fireplace.
2. Remove the glass front.
3. Remove the logs and burner assembly. Disconnect the
wires from the temperature switch as you remove the
burner.
4. Remove the two (2) fan mounting nuts.
5. Disconnect the wires from the fan and remove blower.
6. Re-install all parts in reverse order as removed.
* If any of the original wire as supplied with the appli-
ance must be removed, it must be replaced with type
TEW wire or its equivalent.
Note: The fan, when installed, must be electrically
grounded in accordance with local codes or, in the
absence of local codes, with the latest edition of the
National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 (USA) or CSA-
C22 (CANADA).
BLOWER CONTROL

No regular maintenance is necessary for the fan assembly.
However, regular cleaning is required to keep the air pas-
sageway to and from the fan clean and unobstructed.
Caution: Disconnect electrical supply before servicing any
component of the fan system.

LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS
(For Units Equipped with 820 S.I.T. Control Valve)
WARNING: If you do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire or
explosion may result causing property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
DUE TO HIGH SURFACE TEMPERATURES, KEEP CHILDREN,
CLOTHING AND FURNITURE AWAY.
A. This appliance has a pilot which must be lighted by
hand. When lighting the pilot, follow these instruc-
tions exactly.
B. BEFORE LIGHTING smell all around the appliance
area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because
some gas is heavier than air and will settle on the
floor.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
* Do not try to light any appliance.
* Do not touch any electric switch; do not use any
phone in your building.
* Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s
phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
* If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire
department.
C. Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control
knob. Never use tools. If the knob will not push in or
turn by hand, don’t try to repair it. Call a qualified
service technician. Force or attempted repair may
result in a fire or explosion.
D. Do not use this appliance if any part has been under
water. Immediately call a qualified service technician
to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the
control system and any gas control which has been
under water.
E. Keep burner and control compartment clean. See
installation and operating instructions accompanying
appliance.
F. This appliance must be installed in accordance with
local codes, if any; if not follow latest ANSI Z223.1 for
U.S. and B-149 for Canada
1. Turn off all electric power to appliance if service is to
be performed.
2. Open control access panel.
3. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise
to “OFF”. Do not force.
4. Close control access panel
1. STOP! Read the safety information on this label.
2. Turn off all electric power to appliance.
3. Set the thermostat to the lowest setting or turn switch
“OFF”.
4. Open control access panel.
5. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise
to “OFF”
NOTE: Knob cannot be turned from “PILOT” to
“OFF” unless knob is pushed in slightly. Do not force.
6. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell
for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas,
STOP! Follow “B” in the safety information on this
label. If you don’t smell gas, go to next step.
7. Find pilot – follow metal tube
from gas control. The pilot
is between the two logs.
8. Turn knob on gas control counterclockwise
to “PILOT”.
9. Push in control knob all the way and hold in.
Immediately press the red ignitor button repeatedly
until pilot is lit. Continue to hold the control knob in
for about one (1) minute after the pilot is lit. Release
knob and it will pop back up. Pilot should remain lit.
If it goes out, repeat steps 4 through 9.
* If knob does not pop up when released, stop and
immediately call your service technician or gas sup-
plier.
• If the pilot will not stay lit after several tries, turn the
gas control knob to “OFF” and call your service tech-
nician or gas supplier.
10. Turn gas control knob counterclockwise to “ON”.

PRIMARY AIR ADJUSTMENT
The unit is shipped from the factory with the Burner Primary
Air preset to provide optimum flame appearance and effi-
ciency. No primary air adjustment is possible on this unit for
either burner.
CAUTION: A Misadjusted appliance could be dangerous.
Follow Adjustment and Maintenance Procedures.
MAINTENANCE
At least once per season, prior to start up, and more often
where there is a heavy lint or dust condition, this appliance
must be cleaned in and around it surroundings. THIS
APPLIANCE SHOULD BE INSPECTED BEFORE USE
AND AT LEAST ANNUALLY BY A QUALIFIED SER-
VICE PERSON.
For cleaning, turn off the pilot light, remove the glass and
logs, and vacuum thoroughly in and around the appliance.
Vacuum the logs as well. Prior to replacing the logs, relight
the pilot light and start the main fire.
1. Check to see that all burner ports are burning. Clean out
any of the ports which may not be burning or are not
burning properly (See Flame Sketch).
2. Check to see that the pilot flame is large enough to engulf
the generator bulb on one leg and reaches toward the
Burner Tube on the other leg. The pilot should be burn-
ing smooth.
3. Check to see that the both burners ignite instantaneous-
ly on all openings when turned on. When this is checked
out and cleaned, replace the logs. See installation instruc-
tions on Page 10.
4. Have vent system inspected periodically by a qualified
agency to insure that it is unrestricted, and a proper draft
is present when the unit is in operation.
Keep appliance area clear of combustible materials, gaso-
line and other flammable vapor and liquids.
Make sure that the combustion and ventilation air are
not obstructed.
IMPORTANT:If you have a problem, contact a Local
Licensed Service Company or Local Certified Gas Fitter
FIRST for advice. They are qualified to make any Repairs
or Adjustments.

BURNER ON/OFF SWITCH INSTALLA-
TION INSTRUCTIONS
RN & RP VALVE ONLY
This unit comes pre-wired from the factory for
connection of the burner on/off switch. A con-
nection must between these wires before the
main burner will ignite. Do not wire to 110 AC.
1. Refer to “Front Face Assembly
Instructions,” Page 7, to find burner on/off
switch location. If switch has not been
installed, do it now.
2. Route wires connected to gas valve out gas
line access hole and up back side of face
assembly.
3. Route wires through hole between leg and
top face.
4. Connect wires to switch. It does not matter
which wire is connected to which terminal
on switch.
NOTE: a remote control or thermostat can be
connected in conjunction with the
on/off switch. Connect each as shown
below. Turn off the controll you do not
wish to use. Do not exceed recom-
mended wire length in table below.
INITIAL BURNING
PLEASE NOTE
It is normal for your unit to give off some odor
the first time it is burned. This is due to the cur-
ing of the paint and any undetected oil from the
manufacturing process.
Please ensure that your room is well ventilated
– open all windows.
It is recommended that you burn your unit for
at least six (6) hours continuously the first time
you use it. If optional fan kit has been installed,
place fan in the “OFF” position during this
time.
Please note that it is normal for appliances fab-
ricated of steel to give off some expansion
and/or contraction noises during the start-up
or cool-down cycle. Similar noises are found
with your furnace heat exchanger or car
engine.
FOR UNITS EQUIPPED WITH HI-LO FEA-
TURE
This feature is manually operated. The location
of the control knob is on the front face of the
gas control in the center. To access this lower
botton louvre and turn knob.

TEST SOLUTION
• Clean the glass with a recommended gas glass
cleaner or a non-abrasive ammonia or vinegar
based glass cleaner. DO NOT CLEAN GLASS
WHEN HOT. If deposits are not cleaned off
regularly, the glass may become permanently
marked.
• Check that the logs are correctly positioned.
• Check the input rate; check the manifold pres-
sure and orifice size as specified by the rating
plate valves.
• Check all seals. Check venting action. Consult
with a qualified inspector.
• Check pressure readings:
Inlet pressure can be checked by turning screw
(A) counterclockwise 2 or 3 turns and then
placing pressure gauge tubing over the point.
Gauge should read 7” (minimum 4.5”) water
column for natural gas or 13” (11” minimum)
water column for propane.
Outlet pressure can be checked the same as
above using screw (B). Gauge should read 3.5”
water column for natural gas or 10” water col-
umn for propane.
AFTER TAKING PRESSURE READINGS, BE
SURE TO TURN SCREWS CLOCKWISE FIRM-
LY TO RESEAL. DO NOT OVER TORQUE.
Leak test with a soap and water solution.
• Check if pilot can be lit by a match.
• Check that the wire is connected to the push
button ignitor.
• Check if the push bottom ignitor needs tighten-
ing.
• Replace the wire if the wire insulation is broken
or frayed.
• Replace the electrode if the ceramic insulator is
cracked or broken.
• Replace the push button ignitor.
• Spark gap should be 0.150” to 0.175” (5/32” to
11/64” approx.) from the electrode tip and the
pilot burner. To ensure proper electrode loca-
tion, tighten securing nut (finder tight plus 1/4
turn).
• Check that the manual valve is turned on.
• Check the pilot orifice for blockage.
• Replace the valve.
• Consult with your gas utility.
• Fill the tank.

• Increase fresh air supply (open door, window,
add make-up air supply).
• Remove blockage.
• Check that chimney is installed to building
codes (2 ft. above highest roof line within 10 ft.
or 2 ft. higher than any portion of a building
within a horizontal radius of 10 ft. of the chim-
ney.)
• Turn on pilot flame. Increase pilot flame by
turning pilot adjustment screw counter-clock-
wise.
• Clean thermopile and thermopile connection to
valve. Reconnect thermopile to valve, finger
tight, then tighten one quarter turn with a
wrench.
• Shorten wire to correct length or wire gauge.
• Replace.
• Loosen and tighten thermocouple.
• Clean thermocouple and valve connection.
• Replace thermocouple.
• Replace valve.
• Wait ten minutes. Shut off all exhaust fans in
the house (kitchen and bathrooms), furnace
and clothes dryer. Open windows and/or door.
Start fireplace and monitor its operation. Close
doors and windows and start appliances as
before; room is in negative pressure. Increase
fresh air supply.
• Check for chimney blockage.
• Re-attach to stove.
• Replace.

(d) damage to the finish of fittings or accessories caused by the use of improper solvents/chemicals or improper cleaning
methods;
(e) damage to the firebox, combustion chamber, heat exchanger or other components due to improper installation of chim-
ney or venting products;
(f) damage to any products based on or resulting from improper installation or repair, misuse or abuse (including, but not
limited to, excessive operating conditions), or alteration or adjustment other than in conformity with our installation
instructions and specifications, whether performed by a contractor, service company or yourself.
(g) damage resulting from failure to reasonably clean, care for or maintain a product in accordance with our instructions/rec-
ommendations;
(h) gas appliances that are operated in (1) atmospheres contaminated with chlorine or other damaging chemicals; or (2)
“down draft”, spillage or negative air pressure environments; or
(i) any products we sell that have been moved or removed from their original installation site.
