Introduction
Before using the Shoreline Breaker™, it is essential you read this user manual
carefully and pay particular attention to the safety information. The instructions
and safety information in this user manual must be followed to ensure safe
operation of the Shoreline Breaker™ and to maintain the Shoreline Breaker™ in
a safe condition.
The Shoreline Breaker™ has been designed to mechanically lyse biological
samples contained in bead beating tubes. Up to 48 samples in 2 ml tubes can
be simultaneously processed using Shoreline Biome’s patent-pending device
and method.
The Shoreline Breaker™ has been optimized to reduce the number of steps and
hands-on time to extract DNA from difficult-to-lyse cells, including spores, while
preserving the integrity of the genomic DNA. No programming for different
sample types or bead-beating time is required, simplifying the operation to a
single button.
Intended Use
The Shoreline Breaker™ is intended for research use-only molecular biology
applications. This product is neither intended for the diagnosis, prevention, or
treatment of a disease, nor has it been validated for such use either alone or in
combination with other products. Therefore, the performance characteristics of
the product for clinical use (i.e., diagnostic, prognostic, therapeutic or blood
banking) are unknown.
Safety Information
The Shoreline Breaker™ is designed for safe operation. However, for your
safety, the Shoreline Breaker™ should be operated as specified in this User
Manual. Failure to do so could result in injury to yourself or others, or in damage
to the instrument.
Do not submerge the device in any liquid.
Do not operate if the device is damaged in any way.
Do not attempt to modify the device in any manner. Any attempt to do so will
void the warranty.
Biological Safety
When handling biological material, use safe laboratory procedures.

Shoreline Breaker™ User Manual Page | 5
Samples may contain infectious agents. You should be aware of the health
hazard presented by such agents and should use, store, and dispose of such
samples according to the required safety regulations.
Damage to the instrument
Do not lift the instrument by holding the tube holder. It must be lifted by holding
the bottom of the unit.

Installation
Remove all parts from the shipping container and inspect for damaged or
missing parts. If any parts are found to be damaged or missing, please contact
Shoreline Biome Technical Support.
The Shoreline Breaker™ consists of the following:
Description
Quantity
Shoreline Breaker™ base
1
Universal Power Supply
1
Plug Adapters
1 set
The power supply has been pre-assembled with the North American plug
adapter.
Identify the location where the Shoreline Breaker™ will be installed. Ensure the
surface is clear of debris, clean, and close enough to a power outlet for the cord
to reach. Avoid using extension cords or power strips.
Insert the power cable into the Shoreline Breaker™ base. (Figure 1)
Figure 1.
Place the Shoreline Breaker™ on the bench and, holding the base of the unit,
press down firmly to secure the suction cups to the bench. (Figure 2).

Operation
Before using the Shoreline Breaker™, press the base of the unit to ensure that
the suction cups are fully engaged and plug the system into the wall outlet.
Prepare the samples according to the Shoreline Breaker™ Prep instructions from
the kit; see Appendix A for the list of Shoreline Breaker™ Prep kits. Ensure
each tube’s cap is fully closed before placing the tube into one of the tube holes.
Push the tube down until the lip of the tube touches the top of the Breaker™ as
in Figure 3.
Figure 3.
All tube positions mechanically lyse the sample uniformly, meaning there is no
risk of imbalance during operation.
Once all samples have been prepared and loaded into the Breaker™, push the
green button (Figure 4) to start it. The Breaker™ will rapidly agitate the tubes for
sixty (60) seconds before automatically stopping.
NOTE: The Breaker has been designed to agitate each tube for maximum lysing
efficiency. This requires a shaking motion that will result in a loud rattling
noise. This is expected as part of the standard procedure.

When finished, remove the bead lysis tubes from the Breaker™ for purification
according to the Prep Kit instructions.
“Emergency” Stop
In the event of an emergency, press the green button again to interrupt the
Shoreline Breaker™. Alternatively, the system may be unplugged to interrupt the
device.

Maintenance
Cleaning
Unplug unit before cleaning. The housing of the unit can be cleaned with a
sponge or a damp cloth moistened with water or 70% ethanol. Be sure unit is
completely dry before plugging back into an electrical outlet.
Decontamination
If a tube breaks or spills during use, decontaminate parts that may have been
contaminated with an appropriate disinfectant. The decontamination procedure is
the sole responsibility of the user. Parts that may have been contaminated can
be cleaned with a sponge or a damp cloth moistened with 10% bleach solution.
