INTRODUCTION

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING AN IDEAL 18 TO GET
UNDERWAY AND RETURNING TO THE DOCK.
AS YOU APPROACH THE BOAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAIL,
TAKE NOTE OF WHERE THE BOAT IS LOCATED ON THE
DOCK AND WHERE THE LINES AND FENDERS ARE LOCATED.
IT IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE BOATS END UP IN
THE SAME ORIENTATION, IE BOW IN OUR OUT. WHEN YOU
GET UNDERWAY, TAKE THE FENDERS WITH YOU AND LEAVE
THE DOCK LINES ATTACHED TO THE DOCK.

WHEN YOU RETURN, PUT THE BOAT IN THE SAME
ORIENTATION (YES WE HAVE SAID THAT BEFORE). PG 12

FENDER LOOPED AROUND THE MAST AND FENDER
PUSHED THROUGH EYE IN LINE. OTHER FENDER
THROUGH BLOCK AND CAM CLEAT ON SIDE OF BOAT
WITH A KNOT TIED INBOARD TO PREVENT IT FROM
GETTING LOST.

BEFORE EACH USE OF THE
IDEAL 18, YOU SHOULD
PUMP THE BILGE.
REMOVE THE NUT
HOLDING THE BILGE
PANEL IN PLACE
INSERT BILGE PUMP
(STORED UNDER THE
FOREDECK) AND PUMP TO
THE COCKPIT, IT WILL
FLOW OUT OF THE
SCUPPERS. WHEN
FINISHED RESTOW PUMP
AND SECURE PANEL

IS REMOVED BY SLIPPING
THE FENDER THROUGH
THE EYE IN THE END OF
THE LINE, DO NOT UNTIE
THE KNOT
THE OTHER FENDER IS
ATTACHED MIDSHIPS
THROUGH THE BLOCK
AND CAM CLEAT, FEED IT
THROUGH THE BLOCK
AND CAM CLEAT THEN TIE
A KNOW TO SECURE IT
DEPENDING ON THE
BOATS LOCATION AT THE
DOCK, THERE WILL
NORMALLY BE TWO
FENDERS ATTACHED.
NOTE THE ORIENTATION
FOR YOUR RETURN
THE IDEAL HAS A SELF
DRAINING COCKPIT

TWO SCUPPERS
AT THE STERN OF THE
COCKPIT. PUSH THEM
DOWN TO OPEN AND UP
TO CLOSE.

ON THE FORWARD PART
OF THE MAST. TRIM
HALYARD UNTIL IT IS
SNUG.
NEATLY FOLD THE SAIL
COVER AND PLACE IN
UNDER THE FORE DECK
ONCE THE ENTIRE COVER
IS UNZIPPED, REMOVE
THE SPINNAKER HALYARD

REMOVE MAIN SAIL COVER AND STOW

MOVE TO THE AFT END OF
THE BOOM AND UNTIE
THE SAIL COVER. THEN
START OPENING THE
TWIST SNAPS UNDER THE
BOOM
FOLD THE SAIL COVER
NEATLY TOWARD THE
CENTER OF THE BOOM
START WITH UNTYING
THE SAIL COVER AT THE
MAST AND OPEN THE
ZIPPER
STOW THE FOLDED SAIL
COVER UNDER THE FORE
DECK.

SECURE THE SHACKEL TO
THE HEAD OF THE MAIN
SAIL. MAKE SURE THE
CUNNINGHAM IS RIGGED
AND LOOSE. YOU WILL
ADJUST THIS AFTER THE
SAIL IS RAISED.
SLACK THE BOOM
TOPPING LIFT BY SLIDING
THE KNOT TOWARD THE
BOOM
LOOSEN AND UNTANGLE
THE MAIN SHEET
FIRST LOOSEN THE MAIN
HALYARD AT IT’S
CAMCLEAT. THEN
REMOVE THE MAIN
HALYARD FROM THE RING
FORWARD OF THE MAST
AND MAKE SURE IT IS
CLEAR TO RAISE

FIND THE RED RIB
BON ON
THE PORT SIDE OF THE
SAIL, START AT THE HEAD
OR TACK AND MAKE SURE
THE RED TAPE IS FREE,
LEAVE THE REMAINDER
OF THE SAIL IN THE BAG
DO THE SAME THING
WITH THE GREEN RIBBON
ON THE STARBORD SIDE
OF THE SAIL, LEAVE THE
REMAINDER OF THE SAIL
IN THE BAG
.
PULL SPINNAKER BAG
FROM UNDER DECK, OPEN
IT, REMOVE THE SHEETS
AND THEN DETERMINE IF
THE SAIL IS STOWED
PROPERLY. FIND THE
HEAD, TACK AND CLEW
AND LAY OPEN IN THE
BAG
MAKE SURE THE
SPINNAKER HALYARD IS
FREE TO RUN. IT WILL
GO UP ON THE PORT SIDE
BETWEEN THE SHROUDS
AND THE FORESTAY,
ATTACH THE SPINNAKER
HALYARD TO THE HEAD
OF THE SAIL

SIDES OF THE STERN
THE PORT SHEET GOES
AROUND THE PORT

SAIL BY PUTTING THE
END OF THE LINE
THROUGH THE GROUMET
AT THE TACK OR CLEW
AND TYING A STOPPER

SNAP THE TWEAKERS ON
THE SHEETS.
THE SPINNAKER POLE IS
STORED ON THE STBD
SIDE OF THE BOOM AND
HELD IN PLACE WITH A
BUNGEE CORD. RELEASE
THE POLE TOPPING LIFT
AND ATTACH TO THE EYE
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
POLE
THE “TWEAKER” HELPS
SHAPE THE SPINNAKER.
IT CONSIST OF A LINE
FORWARD OF THE
SHROUDS ON EACH SIDE
WITH A SNAP AT THE AND
LEADING TO A EYE AND
CAM CLEAT
YOU CAN RUN THE
STARBOARD SHEET
THROUGH THE FORWARD
END OF THE POLE AT THIS
POINT OR WAIT UNTIL
YOU ARE READY TO HOIST
THE SPINNAKER

It is very i portant that
the boats be returned to
the EXACT SAME
LOCATION IN THE EXACT
SAME ORIENTATION (BOW
OUT OR IN). LOOK AT
YOUR FENDERS, LINES
AND LOCATION.

CONTINUE UNTIL YOU
HAVE THE SAIL NEATLY
FLAKED, THEN SECURE
WITH THE SAIL TIES. GO
ALL THE WAY AROUND
THE SAIL AND BOOM AND
BRING THE END THROUGH
THE EYE IN THE TIE
REMOVE THE MAIN
HALYARD AND ATTACH IT
TO THE RING ON THE
FORWARD SIDE OF THE
MAST. TRIM THE MAIN
HALYARD SNUG, THEN
START FLAKING THE SAIL
ON THE BOOM

REMOVE THE SPINNAKER
HALYARD IF ATTACHED TO
THE RING, IT IS USED
FOR THE JIB SAIL COVER.
REATTACH THE POLE
TOPPING LIFT TO THE
RING IF NOT ALREADY
ATTACHED
CONTINUE TO FLAKE AND
TIE AS YOU PROCEED UP
THE BOOM. MAKE THE
SAIL TIES TIGHT.
ONCE THE SAIL IS
SECURED, GET THE SAIL
COVER FROM UNDER THE
FOREDECK.

NEXT MOVE TO THE
STERN AND TIE THE SAIL
COVER TO THE EYE
HOLDING THE TOPPING
LIFT. WHEN THAT IS
SECURE, FASTEN THE
TWIST SNAPS UNDER THE
BOOM. SECURE LINES
SECURE THE SAIL COVER
TO THE MAST, ZIP IT UP
AND TIE IT UP, IF SMALL
LINES ARE ATTACHED.

SNAP THE TWEAKERS TO
THE CAM CLEAT AND
TIGHTEN. MAKE UP LINES
REMOVE THE SHEETS AND
COIL LINE, PLACE COILED
LINES IN THE BAG ON TOP
OF THE SAIL
REMOVE THE SPINNAKER
HALYARD AND ATTACH TO
THE RING ON THE TOP OF
THE JIB COVER.
MAKE SURE THE
SPINNAKER IS DRY, PLACE
IN BAG SO THAT THE
EDGES RUN FREE AND
THE HEAD TACK AND
CLEW ARE ON TOP

MEMBER SHOULD PULL ON
THE HALYARD WHILE THE
PERSON AT THE JIB
CONTINUES TO ZIP THE
COVER OVER THE SAIL.
NOTE THERE IS A GAP IN
THE ZIPPER WHERE THE
JIB SHEETS ATTACH
WHEN THE ZIPPER IS ALL
THE WAY TO THE
BOTTOM, USE THE LINE
PROVIDED TO ATTACH
THE SAIL COVER TO THE
DECK OF THE BOAT (IF
PROVIDED) OR THERE
MAY BE A SECOND ZIPPER
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE
JIB, ZIP THIS UP
PUT THE JIB COVER
AROUND THE JIB AT EYE
LEVEL AND ZIP A SHORT
DISTANCE. ENSURE THE
SPINNAKER HALYARD IS
ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF
THE COVER.

SECURING THE HELM

THERE IS A LOOP IN THE
LINE THAT SLIDES OVER
THE HELM, PUT IT ON.
BRING THE OTHER END
OF THE LINE TO THE PORT
SIDE EYE AND SECURE IT
WITH A BOWLINE.
NORMALLY THIS IS
ALREADY TIED
THE HELM IS HELD IN
MIDSHIP POSITION WITH
A LINE RUNNING FROM
THE DECK EYE HOLDING
THE SPINNAKER BLOCKS.
TIE A BOWLINE TO THE
STBD SIDE EYE.
NORMALLY LEFT ON
