Setting Up and Transporting the PG 760 PII
Unpack your PG 760 PII programming device as follows:
1. Remove the packing.
2. Do no throw the original packing away. Keep it in case you have to
transport the unit again sometime in the future.
3. Check with the packing list to make sure no components are missing.
4. Please keep the documentation in a safe place. It contains important
information on the operation of your programming device.
5. Check the packing and its contents for any shipping or transport damage.
6. Please inform your local dealer of any shipping or transport damages and
and of outstanding items indicated on the packing list.
!Caution
Risk of mechanical damage!
When transporting your PG 760 PII in cold weather when it may be exposed
to extreme variations in temperature, make sure that no moisture or
condensation can form on or in the unit.
The unit should be allowed to reach room temperature slowly before it is started
up. If condensation has formed, the unit should be left for about 12 hours before
being switched on.
Fill the serial number of your programming device in the table below. If your
device has been stolen and repair work is required the repair and maintenance
centers can only identify it by its serial number.

Setting up the tower:
Proceed as follows:
1. Place your programming device on a horizontal and even surface.
Don’t cover the ventilating slots.
2. Place monitor, keyboard and mouse in the most convenient position.
3. Connect monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Despite the fact that the PG 760 PII is of rugged design, its internal
components are sensitive to severe vibrations or shock. You must therefore
protect your PG 760 PII against severe mechanical stressing when
transporting it. Use the original packing material if you have to ship the PG
from one location to another.

Hardware Components of the PG 760 PII
All important operator controls and displays are located behind the drive
cover on the front of the unit.
All the power supply connectors and interface ports for hooking up to
external devices are located on the rear panel of the PG 760 PII.

The raised air outlet slots for ventilation are located at the front and back side
of your PG 760 PII. These slots must not be covered in any way.
!Caution
Risk of overheating!
If you cover up the slots for the inlet and outlet air in any way, there is a risk
that your PG 760 PII will be damaged.

Observe the following notes concerning the power supply of the unit.
Note
The power plug must be disconnected to isolate the unit completely from the
supply.
For operation in Canada and the USA, a CSA or UL-listed power supply
cable must be used.
For the United States and Canada:
In the United States and Canada the cord must be UL Listed and CSA
Labelled. The male plug is a NEMA 5-15 style.
For operation with 120 V:
Use a UL Listed, CSA Labelled Cord Set, consisting of a min. 18 AWG.
Type SVT or SJT three conductor flexible cord, max. 4.5 m (15 feet) in
length and a parallel blade grounding type attachment plug, rated 15 A,
min 125 V.
For operation with 240 V (within the USA):
Use a UL Listed, CSA Labelled Cord Set, consisting of a min. 18 AWG.
Type SVT or SJT three conductor flexible cord, max. 4.5 m (15 feet) in
length and a tandem blade grounding type attachment plug, rated 15 A,
250 V.
For operation with 230 V (outside of USA):
Use a Cord Set consisting of a min 18 AWG cord and grounding type
attachment plug rated 15A, 250 V. The cord set should have the approviate
safety approvals for the country in which the equipment will be installed and
marked.
The unit is intended for operation with grounded power supply networks
(TN networks, VDE 0100 part 300 or IEC 364-3).
The unit is not intended for operation with non-grounded or
impedance-grounded systems (IT networks).
The mains cable should fulfill the safety requirements of the country in
which you are operating the device.

If the voltage displayed on the system selector switch does not correspond
with your local voltage, you must move the mains voltage selector so that the
voltage set next to the triangle is visible.
To do this, use a small, flat screwdriver to lever out the part with the voltages
printed on it and replace it in the appropriate position.
!Caution
Risk of damage to the unit!
Operating the PG 760 PII with the incorrect mains voltage can damage the unit,
since the input voltage is also applied to the mains outlet.
To operate the monitor, observe the manufacturer’s specifications.
Only a monitor with the following rated currents may be connected:

After you have checked the right setting of the mains voltage selector and
connected all cables required for operation, you can switch on your
programming device. When you switch on the ON/OFF switch at the back of
the power supply unit, the red Power LED on the front panel lights up
(Standby: the device is connected to the mains voltage). Now switch on the
switch behind the drive cover in the centre of the front panel to change from
standby to operating mode.

The programming device PG 760 PII is equipped with a floppy disk drive, a
hard disk drive and a CD-ROM drive as standard.
You can read, program and erase SIMATIC Memory Cards via the 68-pin
connector.

Please note the following instructions while working with memory cards.
!Caution
Risk of damage to memory cards and to your programming device
PG 760 PII!
You must insert the memory card into a 68-pin connector with the type label
on top of it. The points of orientation on the memory card and on the slot
have to correspond with each other.
If you try to plug the memory card in the wrong way around, your
programming device or memory card will be damaged!
You must not take out the SIMATIC memory card as long as the LED for the
memory card interface is lit.
In order to program SIMATIC memory cards select the submenu “Hardware
Options” under BIOS-Setup and set “Programming interface” “enabled”.

You can store programs and data on diskettes with the disk drive and load
them from diskettes into the PG 760 PII.
You can use the following diskettes:

!Caution
Risk of data loss!
You must not remove the diskette as long as the access LED is lit. Otherwise
you might lose the data on the diskette.
Do not remove the diskette until the access LED on the drive of the
PG 760 PII has gone out.
You can use a number of different hard disk drives in your PG 760 PII. The
memory capacity of the particular type of hard disk can be found in the
Technical Specifications. The hard disk drive is connected to the primary
IDE interface.
Whenever the hard disk drive is accessed, its access LED on the front of the
unit lights up.

!Caution
Risk of loss of data and damage to drive!
Drives are sensitive to vibrations and shock. Any vibrations occurring during
operation can lead to the loss of data or damage to the drive.
If you intend transporting the unit, switch it off, and wait until the drive has
come to rest (about 20 seconds) before you move it.
The CD-ROM drive allows you to load programs and data from CDs. The CD-
ROM drive also enables you to easily update the already installed SIMATIC
software and Windows 95. The CD-ROM drive is connected to the secondary
IDE interface.

This jack is used to connect a set of headphones. Please use headphones with a
stereo mini-jack plug.
This control is used to adjust the headphone volume. This control has no effect
on the left and right audio outputs from the LINE OUT connector on the back
of the unit.
This indicator lights while data is being read.
This tray prevents dust from getting inside the CD-ROM reader and should
remain closed. If your programming device is not switched on you can manually
push the tray and close the door of your CD-ROM drive.
Use a paper clip or any other device to open the CD-ROM tray if the electrical
eject is disabled by software or if power failure occurs (See “Emergency Eject”
for details).
This button is pressed to open or close the CD tray when the power of your
programming device is on.

The procedure described below can be used to remove a disc from the CD-ROM
reader if the Open/Close button is disabled by software or a power failure occurs.
In this case the CD tray cannot be opened automatically.
1. Turn off the power to the CD-ROM reader (switch off your device if
necessary).
2. Insert a steel rod or a stiff paper clip (with a maximum diameter of 1.3 mm
and a minimum length of 55 mm) into the emergency eject hole at the front
of the drive and push lightly. The CD tray is ejected by about 10 mm. Pull
it all the way open by hand and lift the disc out carefully.

By pushing the Open/Close button the CD tray is smoothly opened. Place the
CD with the labeled side upward into the tray. Do not use the built-in clips.
The tray is closed automatically after a short push or after having pushed the
Open/Close button.
!Caution
Risk of data loss and damage to the drive!
CD-ROM drives are sensitive to vibrations and shock. Any vibrations occuring
during operation can lead to damage to the drive or CD.
The PG 760 PII is equipped with additional slots for disk drives and
expansion modules. For further information refer to Chapter 4 of the manual.
The manual is available in electronic format on the back-up CD supplied.
A back-up battery (3.6 V lithium battery) powers the hardware clock even
after the PG is switched off.
!Warning
Risk of severe personal injury or property damage, danger of release of
harmful substances.
There may be a danger of explosion if the battery is not handled properly.
Incorrect disposal of used batteries can cause the release of harmful
substances.
Do not throw a new or discharged lithium battery into an open fire, do not
solder onto the cell container. Do not recharge the battery, do not open the
battery by force.
The correct lithium battery is available from Siemens (Order No.:
W79084-E1003-B1).
Return used batteries to the manufacturer/recycler or dispose of them
according to local regulations.

SpecialFeatures of the Keyboard
All keys on the keyboard are of the autorepeat type. That is, the relevant
character is repeated as long as you keep the key pressed.
The angle of inclination can be raised from 6°to 12°by using the swivel
feet on the back of the keyboard.

The LEDs for the NUM LOCK, CAPS LOCK and SCROLL LOCK keys are
located in the top row of the keyboard and indicate the status of the SHIFT
keys.

When the programming device is powered up, the NUM LOCK, CAPS LOCK
and SCROLL LOCK LEDs light up briefly twice. The keyboard is then ready
for operation.

The setup guidelines and notes on safety given in the documentation must be
observed during startup and when operating the device.
The requirements regarding noise immunity (EN50082-2:1995) are met when
a mouse is connected at the COM2 port.
Note
Any other devices which are connected to this product must also be radio
interference suppressed according to the German Ministry for Post and
Telecommunications provision 1046/84 and 243/91 or European Economic
Community Directive 89/336/EEC. Products which fulfil these specifications

Options
An optional second IDE disk drive can be built into the free rear disk drive
slot available. Provisions for the necessary wiring have already been made.
!Caution
Risk of damage to the unit!
Please note that only qualified personnel should be allowed to work on the
open unit, so the warranty on the device is not affected. Authorized Siemens
maintenance and repair centers offer you a specialist maintenance service.
You can obtain a list of addresses from the SIMATIC Customer Support
Hotline. In addition, read Chapter 5 of the manual.
Only ATA33-compatible drives can be used as a second disk drive. The
drives must display the CE- or UR- symbol. You can obtain further
information from your service representative.
On the rear of the disk drive there are plug-in jumpers to set the operating
mode. If there are jumper settings printed on your drive, these settings apply.
You can add to the functionality of your PG 760 PII by expanding the
configuration of the hardware to fit your individual requirements. The
following table shows the options offered by Siemens.

Plug the SIMM memory cards in as follows:
1. Switch off your device and disconnect it from the power supply.
2. First open the unit as described in Chapter 4 of the manual.
3. Remove all inserted long ISA modules.
4. Plug the SIMM card into the socket in a vertical position, making sure the
cut-out on the connector end of the SIMM card engages properly.
5. Press the card lightly and tilt it downwards until it locks into place.
6. Close the device (see Chapter 4 of the manual).

After plugging in, make sure that the cards fit tightly into their sockets other-
wise they could be damaged.
