A safety thermostat monitors the temperature inside the device, so that a fire or
thermal damage can be avoided. If the temperature regulator for the heating
elements fails, the elements are deactivated once a temperature of max. 180
°C is reached inside the device.

•Make sure the safety equipment is in perfect condition and functioning
correctly.
•Never remove, render inoperable or modify protective and safety equipment,
even during trial operation.
The safety equipment is to be checked for fault-free functioning by specialised
personnel at regular intervals. If, for the purpose of carrying out maintenance,
servicing or repair work, the device or parts thereof must be run temporarily without
one or other of the safety elements, the protection of persons has to be ensured by
taking suitable alternative measures.
Note
The safety equipment must in particular be checked following the completion of
maintenance, servicing or repair work.
If the safety equipment has faults, the device must not be used until such faults
have been rectified.

The information given here is intended as basic safety information with regard to
certain types of hazards that can arise in certain situations.
This basic safety information is to be complied with whenever working at the
device. Risks to health and hazardous situations can thus be avoided. Specific
safety and warning information can be found in the corresponding sections and is
also to be complied with.
The residual risks were determined on the basis of a risk assessment. All persons
working at or with the device must know what the residual risks are. If necessary,
internal instructions must be given according to the professional qualifications of
the persons involved. The instructions are to be followed to prevent accidents or
damage occurring as a consequence of the residual risks.

3.10.1 Hazards due to electrical energy
Contact with live components is potentially fatal and will result in severe injury or
death. Furthermore, active electrical components can execute uncontrolled
movements.
•Work on electrical systems and equipment is to be carried out by a qualified
electrician only and in accordance with electrical engineering standards. Prior
to work being started on the electrical system:
–the device is to be de-energised.
–the device is to be protected against re-activation.
–the de-energised state is to be verified.
•Use only electrically-insulated tools.
•Watch out for damage to electrical equipment and check for this at regular
intervals. Loose cable connections and damaged or scorched cables present a
hazard. Eliminate defects immediately.
•Keep control cabinets and boxes closed at all times. Allow only authorised
personnel access.
•For tasks carried out at live parts, have a second person present who, in case
of emergency, can interrupt the power supply. Immediately deactivate the
device if there is a fault with the energy supply system.

3.10.2 Hazards due to laser radiation
The device works with a high-energy Class 4 laser beam. Exposure of the eyes
and/or skin to laser radiation (including scatter radiation) can cause severe
damage (burns) to the eyes and/or skin.
•The inspection glass of the door must be present and undamaged.
If performing servicing tasks at the device, or working at the laser system, with the
device not securely disconnected from the mains and thus the laser not protected
against inadvertent activation:
•always use protective laser goggles.
Note
If the door is opened during normal operation, the laser will be safely deactivated
via the door-monitoring switch.

3.10.3 Hazards due to hot places
The inside of the device is subject to very high temperatures during operation and
also the powder and the print object are hot. If the device has not cooled down
sufficiently before the door is opened, there is a risk of burns due to high surface
temperatures.
•Allow the device to cool down after the printing process.
•Wear suitable protective gloves.
•Perform maintenance work or similar activities at the device only when this is in
a cold state.

3.10.4 Hazards due to moving parts
During operation, there are moving parts inside the device.
There is a risk of injury if contact is made with moving parts.
Note
If the door is opened during normal operation, the parts will be safely brought to a
stop via the door-monitoring switch.
If performing servicing work at the device, or similar work, with the device not
securely disconnected from the mains and thus a risk of parts moving
inadvertently:
•Wait until the device has been securely disconnected from the mains before
commencing such work.

3.10.5 Hazards due to gases, vapours and dust
The powder processed in the device is basically non-toxic. If the powder is handled
without due care, dust can form. If powder is inhaled or enters the eyes, this can
cause respiratory or eye irritation or damage to health.
•When handling powder, use respiratory protection, protective goggles and
protective gloves.
•Do not use compressed air for cleaning tasks.
•Avoid draughts.
If the powder is heated excessively or catches fire, toxic gases are released,
principally carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Inhalation of these
gases can result in damage to health or, in the worst case, to death.
•Use respiratory protection
•If using the device in confined spaces, ensure that there is sufficient ventilation.
•Have fire extinguishing agents close at hand.
Note
Comply the information concerning PA 12 powder on the safety data sheet in the
appendix. If using other types of powder, comply with the manufacturers’
specifications (indicated on data sheets, for example).

3.10.6 Hazards to the environment
Auxiliary materials such as oils, greases, solvents, etc. may contain toxic
substances which can contaminate soil and drinking water. Such materials must
not end up in the environment.
•Dispose of such materials in an environmentally-sound manner.
Comply with applicable local disposal regulations.
•Disposal must be carried out by a specialist disposal company.
•Comply with manufacturers’ specifications and information on safety data
sheets for the individual materials.
•Also comply with the specifications in the suppliers’ documentation.

If a situation arises, whereupon there is a risk to life and limb, the device can be
deactivated by setting the main switch to the OFF position or detaching the mains
cable.
Note
The main switch should be operated only in situations where the safety of
persons or the device is jeopardised,
or else to deactivate the device completely, if the device is in standby mode and
