SIRS NAVIGATION LTD
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
1. General
A. This manual is written to ATA iSpec 2000 and in AECMA Simplified English.
SI units of measurement are used with imperial units in parentheses.
B. The manual refers to physical and technical details of the compass and gives
necessary information to overhaul the compass units shown on the title page.
C. This manual refers to compasses manufactured to a ‘MOD.02’ specification.
‘MOD.02’ compasses were introduced in 1988 and no ‘MOD.01’ compasses have
been built since that date. All compasses overhauled by SIRS Navigation Ltd., are
modified to ‘MOD.02’.
D. Changes have been made to each page of the CMM and revision markers have
been excluded.
E. The manual does not refer to maintenance on the component when it is installed on
the aircraft. The compass is a sealed unit and must be repaired by the manufacturer
or an approved repair agent.
F. Only use trained employees for repair or maintenance of the compass.
G. This manual contains:
- Technical data for the component.
- Maintenance and repair procedures for the component.
- An Illustrated Parts List (IPL) . Parts are identified in all sections of the manual by
an IPL Figure and an item number.
H. The ‘Disassembly’, ‘Testing’, ‘Fault Isolation’ and ‘Assembly Procedures’ contained
in this manual have been written with reference to accepted working procedures.
I. SIRS Navigation Ltd. Purchased all rights to the compass products from ‘Smiths
Industries’ in 1994. Questions must be refered to SIRS Navigation Ltd.

C. Warnings, Cautions and Notes
The instructions in this manual must be used for all component
maintenance. Read all applicable WARNINGS, CAUTIONS and NOTES
before you work on the component.
These adjuncts to the text are used to highlight or emphasize important
points when necessary.
WARNINGS call attention to use materials, processes, methods,
procedures or limits, which must be followed precisely to prevent injury
to persons

SIRS NAVIGATION LTD
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
A. General
The compasses (Fig.1) are self-contained magnetic units, installed at eye level or
above, and give a constant indication of aircraft direction.
Aircraft direction is read from the compass card against a vertical lubber line marked
on the inside of the compass bowl. A ‘non-magnetic’ lamp is used to light up the
compass card.

Correctors are installed above the compass bowl to reduce magnetic errors. The
complete compass can be turned to correct magnetic ‘coefficient A’ errors.
B. Description
The compass card is of conic section with graduation-lines marked on its outer face.
The card is attached to an assembly that includes a cobalt ring magnet and pivot.
The pivot turns in a sapphire cup that is installed in a stem assembly, which is
attached to the compass bowl by a bracket.
The compass bowl is a transparent polycarbonate moulding, painted black or grey.
The compass card is seen through a transparent window at the front of the bowl.

SIRS NAVIGATION LTD
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
The compass bowl is filled with silicone fluid to control movement of the compass
card. Bellows (10) at the rear of the compass bowl, allow fluid volume changes.
A filling plug (190), disc (210) and washer (200) are assembled to the compass bowl
below the corrector assembly (160). A marked scale, on the front edge of the
corrector assembly gives a guide for coefficient 'A' correction.
The magnetic correctors, for coefficients 'B' and 'C', are small bar magnets installed
in the gear shafts of the corrector assembly. ‘Indicator lines’ on the end of the gear
shafts identify the direction of the magnets. Gear shaft movement can be seen on
top of the corrector assembly as an angular difference between the indicator lines
and the marked index lines. The magnetic correctors are adjusted with a corrector
key (220) that is turned inside the corrector adjustment holes, at the front of the
compass bowl.
The lamp housing assembly (230) is a plastic moulding that is assembled to the
base of the bowl and secured with a clip-fit procedure.
A lead and socket assembly (260) is assembled to the underneath of the lamp
housing assembly.and gives electrical connection.
A ‘non-magnetic’ lamp (240) is installed into a spring inside the lamp housing
assembly and is retained by the lamp cap (250).
D. Operation
The compass operates without an electrical power supply. The magnet of the
compass card is aligned with the earths magnetic field. The direction of the aircraft
is determined with reference to a vertical lubber line positioned close to the compass
card.
Magnetic corrector magnets, at the top of the compass, can be adjusted to cancel
magnetic forces induced by the aircraft.
A light fitted at the bottom of the compass is used to light up the compass card.

SIRS NAVIGATION LTD
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
The compass must be installed with two ‘non-magnetic’ screws, with a head
diameter of dimension 6.5mm to 6.9mm.
CAUTION:THE SCREWS THAT ATTACH THE COMPASS MUST NOT
BE OVER-TIGHTENED.
NOTE: Refer to the installation drawing for detailed information. The compass
does not need electrical power to operate, other than for illumination. The
compass will operate after installation and ‘magnetic correction’.
Magnetic correction is required to correct for magnetic errors caused by
the aircraft, local components or instruments. A correction procedure for
the compass is specified in page Block 11001 Special Procedures.
