SK A1 Installation and user guide

Secure Key
Product HowTo
Product description
SecureKey A1 is a wallet password generator. It’s a ruggedized electronic device that combines
at least two arbitrary personal pins, and one keypad sequence, to generate strong passwords. It
is also a wallet password because it is able to “remember”, the strong password that it
generates.
Setup procedure
To use the device, it is mandatory to complete the
setup procedure. During this activity the user will
insert in the device at least two personal PINs
and one unlock key PUK. After this procedure the
Secure Key A1 will be ready to generate strong
passwords.
Emergency Backup
It is mandatory to save separately the personal PINs
and PUK. With the personal PINs , the owner or
another subject, with a new device, could generate the same passwords. For this reason the
PINs, and PUK must be saved in a safe place. Pay attention, there is no way to generate the
same passwords without these PINs. After the first setup, unlock the device with the PUK and
type the sequence 000# to visualize on a notepad all the PINs and the PUK, at the end, print it
and archive it.

Setup Sequence
To properly set up your devices, follow the next steps.
Step 1: Device connection
Connect the device to your computer via USB using the cable included in the package. The cable
has a standard USB plug on one side, and a magnetic interface connection on the other side. If
you lose or damage the cable, please buy a new one from the web site www.securekey.it. Avoid
metallic dust to be in contact with the magnetic interface, and remove the cable from the
computer when it is not connected to the SecureKey devices.
If the operative system asks you to configure the “new keyboard”, please ignore it.
After the connection, the device is ready to be configured and used.
Step 2: Start the one time setup procedure
Open a standard text editor like “notes” or “wordpad” in Windows 10, “Text Edit” in Mac OS or
“nano” in Linux OS. The device will print out some words during this activity.
Follow the sequence:
- open the text editor
- prepare to write on it
- press the next setup sequence on the SecureKey A1 *110011#

NEW CODES PROCEDURE INITIATED

Continue with the same procedure up to the end of the setup for all the PINs and the PUK.
When the procedure will be complete this message will appear.
Your device is now configured, please disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.
Now you must disconnect and connect the device again to complete the procedure.
Remember that all the PINs and the PUK are now saved in the device memory. You can repeat
this procedure if you need to change the PINs or the PUK. Remember that a new PUK does not
change the password generation results. Conversely, new PINs change all our passwords.

Understand Secure Key A1
Secure Key A1 generates an ‘unlimited’ number of passwords and can be used for Personal and
Professional use. It generates the password using the PINs and KeyPad sequence. To grant a
Personal and a Professional use, Secure Key A1 is able to manage two different sequences of
PINs. The first couple of PINs must be secret, and individual. The second couple of PINs must
be shared with your Team colleagues. To generate a Team password, you must type a different
sequence of letters, see the next chapter.
Personal PINs and Team PINs
Secure Key A1 accepts up to two different couples of PINs.
Conventionally the first pair of PINs is named as Personal, and is used to generate personal
passwords, and the second pair of PINs is named as Team and is used to generate team or
workgroup passwords.
When you want to generate your Personal password, you must use the sequence ‘A’ or ‘B’ or ‘C’
or ‘D’ + a numeric sequence + the special character ‘#’.
When you want to generate a Team password, you must use the sequence ‘AA’ or ‘BB’ or ‘CC’ or
‘DD’ + a numeric sequence + the special character ‘#’

Thanks to the Team shared key pair, it will be possible to generate the same passwords, from
different devices that share the same Team keys. Remember to share these keys without writing
it in a digital format, to avoid any theft risk.

Masked password file
Secure Key A1 uses a combination of letters and numbers to generate your password. It is
mandatory for you to save the Masked password list in an easily reachable resource. This file
must be secret, and must be reachable whenever you need. If you save it in the cloud, remember
to save a copy also to an offline archive.
A Masked password file could be similar to the following example:
Service
User
Masked Password
Notes
Facebook account
B23
Gmail account
A12
Bank
your account
C327
Remember to remove
the last character*
...
*It may happen that a service does not accept special characters, or it accepts only a
shorter password. For these reasons it could be useful to use the ‘note column’, to take
specific notes regarding the password composition.
