QUICK START
• Use the red/positive
wire on the hand that
holds the head end of
the fish
• Placing activated gloves
in a tank of water with
fish will often elicit a
flight response.
• Gloves will only function
when both hands are in
contact with fish.
• Conductive materials,
like metal tables, will
transfer electricity. A
thin rubber or plastic
sheet on the table will
reduce electric stray and
ensure that the current
flows through the fish.
• Handling fish with the
gloves often allows for
continued fish respira-
tion. Hold the tail out
of water with one hand
and the head under
water with the other
hand (keeping one hand
out of water will pre-
vent stray electric flow
through the water).
• Wires can be routed un-
der a long-sleeved gar-
ment for increased wire
management.
• Arm straps can be used
over snaps to ensure a
secure connection.
• Gloves should be rinsed
and dried following use.
• Cotton or wool gloves
saturated with water can
be worn over conductive
gloves and replaced as
needed for slime protec-
tion.

CONTROL BOX
Conductive Fish Handling Gloves are
worn over insulating
gloves
(top),
Control
box is worn on the adjustable chest
harness (middle) or a belt
(bottom).
The equipment consists of
the control box (A), a pair of
conductive fish handling gloves
(B), a pair of rubber insulating
gloves (C), a wire lead as-
sembly (D), a carry case (not
shown), arm bands (E), an ad-
justable chest harness (F), and
the user’s manual and battery
charger (also not shown).
The lightweight, water resistant
control box can be worn on the
chest harness (or alternately,
clipped on a belt) and contains
rechargeable batteries, making
the device fully portable.
Two sets of gloves must be
worn when operating the Elec-
tric Fish Handling Glovestm Sys-
tem. The pair of rubber Insulat-
ing Gloves protects the handler
from the electric current, and
is worn under the pair of Fish
Handling Gloves. The conduc-
tive Fish Handling Gloves are
worn over the rubber gloves
and are connected to the Con-
trol Box with the snaps on the
Wire Leads. One glove acts as
the negative electrode (cath-
ode) and the other is the pos-
itive electrode (anode). Once
turned on, the circuit is com-
pleted when a conductive item
(fish) is contacted by each of
the fish handling gloves simul-
taneously.

The top of the Control Box has a rotary switch to select the out-
put current (Fig. A). The switch has six positions, and sets the
output current selection to either OFF, 5mA (milliamps), 10mA,
15mA, 10mA, or 25.0mA. In the OFF position the equipment will
not conduct electricity and the gloves are disabled.
The Control Box has two indicator lights. When the Power Indi-
cator is blue, the power is on. When the power indicator is green,
the output is active When battery voltage drops and the batter-
ies need to be recharged, the red Low Battery light is lit (C). See

USAGE
The Electric Fish Handling Glovestm system provide a regulated
current output to control the flow of current through the fish
between the two conductive Fish Handling Gloves. Proper posi-
tioning of the gloves includes one point of contact on the caudal
peduncle (tail region) (1), and another contact behind the oper-
culum (forward body region) (2).
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Thoroughly rinse gloves and glove connector snap terminals
with freshwater following use. Wipe down control box with
damp cloth using water or mild detergent as needed. Do not
immerse control box in water or liquid. Appropriate care of the
control box, gloves, and accessories may extend their life. Please
contact Smith-Root for any needed replacement parts.

CHARGING
CHARGING THE INTERNAL BATTERIES
The Electric Fish Handling
Glovestm control box is
powered by recharge-
able high-efficiency, size
AA nickel–metal hydride
(NiMH) batteries. When
depleted, they must be
removed and charged
in the supplied battery
charger.
To charge the batteries,
remove the batteries from
the unit and place in the
charger, following the
steps in the supplied char-
ger’s instructions.
When removing or replacing batteries, take care not to intro-
duce water into the battery compartment
When charging is complete, place the batteries back in the
control unit in the proper configuration. If storing the Electric
Fish Handling Glovestm for an extended period of time, remove
the batteries and store them in a cool, dry place and recharge
before using.
• Only use a charger approved for charging AA NiMH batteries.
• Do not leave the batteries charging in the charger for more
than 12 hours.
• Recharge the batteries every three months, regardless of use.
• Store the Control Box in a climate controlled environment
when not in use.
Standard rechargeable batteries and even disposable AA batter-
ies can be used, but their performance for this application would
be greatly diminished.

HUMAN SAFETY
Electricity can be hazardous. While the Electric Fish Handling
Glovestm must be used carefully, the equipment has built-in
safety features: a limited voltage output of 36 volts and a limited
current output of 25mA under
normal operation. The output
of 36 volts, is less than the in-
ternationally recognized stan-
dard safe voltage of 42.4 DC
volts, referred to as “extra-low
voltage” in IEC 335-1 (Interna-
tional Electrotechnical Commis-
sion), and the limited current
output of 25 mA is less than
the threshold of current needed
to adversely affect the human
heart with an accidental current
flow passing through the chest
and both arms (IEC TS 60479-1,
Section 3.3.2, Table 12, Figure 19,
Figure 22).
FISH SAFETY
If the current needed to
handle a fish is unknown, first
use the 5mA setting, and only
increase the setting until the
fish reaches the desired level
of immobilization. Increasing
the current beyond the neces-
sary level could result in slow
recovery times or death for
the fish.

USER’S GUIDE
2019
Common sense and experimental data indicate that there is no
guarantee of complete safety with use of any electrical equip-
ment. This is largely due to variations in human skin resistance,
and the threshold at which individuals respond differently to
electrical currents. As with all electronic equipment, especial-
ly with any electrical device in or near water, the fish handling
gloves require the operator to be aware of the danger of electri-
cal shock due to misuse. Here are rules to follow:
SAFETY
• The Insulated Gloves must be worn beneath the conductive Fish
Handling Gloves. In no way should the conductive gloves make
contact with the hands of the fish handler, or anyone else, nor
should anyone ever come in contact with any water body or con-
ductive material where the gloves are deployed.
• Stop using the gloves if water gets the inside of the Insulated
Gloves. If this happens, turn off equipment immediately and dry
the inside of the gloves before further use.
• The gloves should never be placed on the head or body of any-
one while activated.
• Do not use the Electric Fish Handling Glovestm with any open
wounds on hands, as open wounds are more electrically conduc-
tive than skin.
• Only allow qualified personnel to use the Electric Fish Handling
Glovestm, and such individuals should be known to have read and
understood the safety concerns in this manual, and should be of
a cautious and thoughtful nature.
• For maximum safety, this device should be kept inaccessible (by
lock and key) to those who would not be qualified to understand
or appreciate the safety requirements of the device.
