EMC Performance of Cables and Connectors
Snell & Wilcox products are designed to meet or exceed the requirements of the appropriate European EMC
standards. In order to achieve this performance in real installations it is essential to use cables and connectors
with good EMC characteristics.
All signal connections (including remote control connections) shall be made with screened cables terminated in
connectors having a metal shell. The cable screen shall have a large-area contact with the metal shell.
COAXIAL CABLES
Coaxial cables connections (particularly serial digital video connections) shall be made with high-quality
double-screened coaxial cables such as Belden 8281 or BBC type PSF1/2M.
D-TYPE CONNECTORS
D-type connectors shall have metal shells making good RF contact with the cable screen. Connectors having
"dimples" which improve the contact between the plug and socket shells are recommended.
RS422 CABLE
This should feature 5 twisted pairs, braided and foil screened with metal shell connectors and should be EMC
approved (see above) or conform to equivalent U.S. standards.
VGA CABLE
This should feature 5 individual coaxial cables (internal) for the video signals and at least 3 un-screened
cables. This group of cables must be screened overall and where possible a ferrite tube type 43 material (such
as Fair-Rite™ type 2643665702) should be fitted to the cable adjacent to the connector.

POWER CONNECTIONS
Power Supply
There are two filtered IEC connectors with integral
fuse holders for the connection of mains power to
the unit. The fuse rating for each connector is
2.5 A (T).
The unit can accommodate two separate supplies
and the position of the connectors coincides with
the position of the power supply modules.
If only one PSU module is to be installed it should
be fitted in the position marked MAIN. The unit will
operate correctly when power is connected to
connector marked MAIN.
Fitting and powering-up a second power supply
module in the position marked SPARE will provide
continued operation if the MAIN power supply
module should fail.
When two power supply modules are fitted both
IEC connectors can be connected to the same or
different power sources.
Note that the power outlet(s) supplying power to
the unit should be close to the unit and easily
accessible
The power supply module(s) are Snell & Wilcox
generic type SHDPSUA15.
Caution! The fan ventilation hole above the mains
inlet connector must not be obscured.

Decoder Section
The decoder accepts a composite input or a
separated input in either NTSC or PAL standard
via BNC connectors.
COMPOSITE INPUTS
The Y/Composite IN connector is used for the
composite video input to the decoder via a BNC
connector terminated in 75 Ohms. This should be
used for sources of standard composite video
signals.
Nominal input level is 1V p-p.
S-VHS, Hi 8 Separated Video inputs
The Y/COMPOSITE IN connector and the C IN
Input connectors are used for sources of S-VHS,
Hi 8 or other sources of separated Video signals.
The C IN Input should be used for C
(Chrominance) signal and the Y/COMPOSITE IN
connector used for the Y (Luminance) signal.
Both connections are via BNC connectors and are
terminated in 75 Ohms.
Note that a 4 pin Mini-DIN plug to 2 BNC plugs is
supplied for connecting to S-VHS, Hi 8 etc.

COMPONENT INPUTS
These inputs normally accept analog component
video signals in YPbPr format via BNC connectors
that terminate in 75 Ohms.
Note that this input may be configured to accept an
RGB signal.
On early cards this is by link selection on the
IQD1ADC card.
For full details please see Section 5 “RGB input
select change and Sync level select”.
On later cards this is achieved by software control.
See Section 4, “Operation”.
COMPONENT EXT SYNC
When External syncs are selected for the analog
component signal above, the ADC will lock to a
suitable sync signal connected to the IN connector.
The OUT connector provides a buffered version of
the signal at the IN connector.
This input normally accepts a low level 0.3 V p-p
signal. It can be configured to accept a high level
2 V p-p signal.
For full details please see Section 5 “RGB input
select change and Sync level select”.

IMPORTANT-POWERING-UP
When the ShoeBox controller is powered up it will
attempt to connect to a mainframe unit. The
following message will be seen:
When a connection to a mainframe unit has been
established the following message is displayed as
the ShoeBox controller initializes itself.
If the physical connection to the mainframe is lost
then the ShoeBox controller will attempt to
re-establish a connection. This process should be
fully automatic.
Note that there may be rare occasions when the
ShoeBox controller does not complete the
initializing process. Should this happen the Home
button should be pressed. This will force the
ShoeBox controller to re-initialize.
Note that the same effect as a power cycle for the
Shoebox can be achieved by simultaneously
pressing the buttons marked 4 and Tint on the
