If the unit is turned off by pressing (OFF) for
2 seconds, it cannot be operated with the card remote
commander unless (SOURCE)on the unit is pressed,
or a cassette tape is inserted to activate the unit first.

See “Replacing the lithium battery” on page 22 for
details on how to replace the batteries.

Precautions NotesonCassettes
l If your carwasparkedin direct sunlight,allow
theunit to cool off beforeoperatingit.
l If nopower is beingsuppliedto theunit, check
theconnectionsfirst. If everythingis in order,
checkthefuse.
l If no soundcomesfrom the speakersof atwo-
speakersystem,setthe fadercontrol to the
centerposition.
l Whenatapeis played backfor along period,
thecassettemay becomewarmbecauseof the
built-in poweramplifier. However,this isnot a
signof malfunction.

To maintain high quality sound
Becarefulnot to splashjuice or othersoftdrinks
ontotheunit or tapes.
Cassette care
l Do not touchthetapesurfaceof acassette,as
anydirt or dustwill contaminatetheheads.
l Keepcassettesawayfrom equipmentwith
built-in magnetssuchasspeakersand
amplifiers, aserasureor distortion onthe
recordedtapecould occur.
l Do not exposecassettesto direct sunlight,
extremelycold temperatures,or moisture.
l Slackin thetapemay causethetapeto be
caughtin themachine.Beforeyou insertthe
tape,useapencil or similar objectto turn the
reel andtakeup anyslack.
Slack
l Distorted cassettesandlooselabelscancause
problemswhen inserting or ejectingtapes.
Removeor replacelooselabels.
l Thesoundmaybecomedistortedwhile playing
thecassette.Thecassetteplayerheadshouldbe
cleanedafter each50 hoursof use.
The use of cassettes longer than 90 minutes
is not recommended except for long
continuous play
Thetapeusedfor thesecassettesis very thin and
tendsto stretcheasily.
Frequentplaying andstoppingof thesetapes
may causethemto becomeentangledin the
cassettedeck mechanism.

Getting Started
Resettingthe unit
Beforeoperatingtheunit for the first time or
afterreplacingthecarbattery,you mustresetthe
unit.
Removethe front panelandpresstheRESET
buttonwith apointedobject, suchasaball-point
pen.

Note
Pressing the RESET button willerase the clock setting
and some stored contents.
Detachingthefront panel
Youcandetachthefront panelof this unit to
protecttheunit from being stolen.
Caution alarm
If you turn theignition switch to theOFF
position without removing thefront panel,the
cautionalarmwill beepfor afew seconds.
If you connectanoptional amplifier anddonot
usethebuilt-in amplifier, thebeepsoundwill be
deactivated.
1 Press (OFF)*.
Tapeplaybackor radio receptionstops(the
key illumination anddisplay remainon).
* If your car has no ACC position on the ignition
switch, be sure to turn the unit off by pressing
QFJ for 2 seconds to avoid car battery drain.
2 Press (OPEN), then slide the front
panel to the right, and gently pull out
the left end of the front panel.
Notes
l If you detach the panel while the unit is still turned
on, the power will turn off automatically to prevent
the speakers from being damaged.
l Do not drop or put excessive pressure on the front
panel and its display window.
l Do not subject the front panel to heat/high
temperature or moisture. Avoid leaving it in parked
cars or on dashboard&ear trays.
Tip
When carrying the front panel with you, use the
supplied front panel case.

signalswithin theselectedband.andstoresthem

Tips
l If automatic tuning stops too frequently, turn on the
Local Seek to limit seek to stations with stronger
signals (see ‘Changing the sound and display
settings” on page 15).
l If you know the frequency of the station you want to
listen to, press and hold either side of (SEEK) fo
locate the approximate frequency, then press
(SEEK) repeated/y to fine adjust to fhe desired
frequency (manual tuning).
If FM stereo reception is poor
Select monaural reception mode
(see“Changing the soundanddisplay
settings”onpage 15).
The soundimproves,butbecomesmonaural
(“ST” disappears).
Note
If interference occurs, this unit will automatically
narrow the reception frequency to eliminate noise (IF
AUTO function). In such cases, some FM stereo
broadcasts may become monaural while in fhe stereo
reception mode.
Tip
Toalways hear FM stereo broadcasts in stereo, you
can change the IF AUTO setting and widen the
frequency signal reception (see “Changing the sound
and display settings” on page 15). Note that some
interference may occur in this setting.

Changing the operative direction

Whenyou drive without passengers,you cLan
enjoy themost comfortablesoundenvironment
with “My BestsoundPosition.”
“My BestsoundPosition” hastwo presets,which
arebestsuitedfor thefront seats. You canselect
onevery easilywith theMBP button.
MBP-A: bestsuitedfor thepersonin thefront-
left seat.
MBP-B: bestsuitedfor thepersonin the front-
right seat.
Press (MBP) repeatedly for the desired
listening position.
After 1second,thedisplay goesbackto the
normalplaybackmode.
TocanceltheMBP function, select“MBP-OFF.”
If you want to adjustthesoundcharacteristics
moreprecisely,you cando it usingthe
(SOUND) button (see“Adjusting the sound
characteristics”on page14).
Notes
l If you adjust any sound characteristics by using the
(soured_) button (page 14), the MBP setting returns

Youcan label CDs on a unit without the CUSTOM
FILE function if that unit is connected along with a
CD unit that has the function. The Disc Memo will be
stored in the memory of the CD unit with the
CUSTOM FILE function.
Note
REP-TRACK/shuffle play is suspended until the Name
Edit is complete.
