This document contains information on how to improve the picture quality of a
Sony KF-50XBR800 and KF-60XBR800. Changing values in the service menu
can degrade the picture quality if done incorrectly and potentially damage your
TV and void the Sony warranty. Every attempt has been made to provide
accurate information, but no guarantees are made as to the applicability of these
changes. This document is provided for informational purposes only and
damage resulting from the use of this document is your problem and no one
else's.
Many of the values shown in this document are the result of following a
calibration procedure. Failure to use the calibration procedure given and
substituting the values shown will likely result in substandard picture quality.
Carefully read the comments in this document because they indicate whether the
value shown is an example or one that should be used at all times.

The following is an overview of the recommended order to implement all of
the adjustments in this document:

Service Menu (All of these settings are only available in the service menu)
To change a data item for an input you must press [TV/Video] on the remote to
select that input while you are on the data item if you are not on that input and in
the proper mode [PRO, VIVID] with an image from that device on the screen.
Once you have changed the proper data item you must save it before proceeding
to the next input or mode or the change will be lost. Note: Sometimes an input
will change its signal type (720p to 480i) from a device without your asking it to
so make sure your changes took.
The following list is only a small subset of the values in the service menu. Go to
the correct category first and thenmove up to the correct item name to change a
value. Most of the values can be tested correctly without saving them. Only
store a value when you are sure of the change because going back requires you
to enter the original value manually.
THE FOLLOWING CHANGES ARE INTENDED FOR PRO MODE. MORE
CHANGES ARE REQUIRED IF YOU WISH TO MAKE VIVID, STANDARD OR
MILD MODE LIKE PRO.
ALWAYS RECORD THE CATEGORY, ITEM NO., DATA, PICTURE MODE,
ITEM NAME & INPUT SIGNAL BEFORE CHANGING ANYTHING!!!!
The service menu is arranged as follows:

Picture and brightness will need to be

If you want to try a change in gamma
change the value by 5 or 10 and recalibrate
picture and brightness.
This setting can improve the color sharpness of analog inputs and is a
function of the device's accuracy.

These settings are used to set the white balance (color of gray). This is the
most difficult adjustment to make.

An instrument free procedure for adjusting white balance:
1. Place a bright gray window (70-90 IRE) on the screen from AVIA or VE.
2. Go to category 2170P-2 and item RGBS and set the value to 6 (turns off
blue).
3. Adjust GDRV until the window looks pure yellow (not green or red tinted). I
record the values where it looks slightly green and red and then try the
values near the middle of those.
4. Place a gray scale ramp (100-0 IRE) on the screen.
5. Adjust GCUT and/or RCUT if you see a problem with low IRE yellows.
This is difficult to judge.
6. Go back to step one if you changed GCUT or RCUT.
7. Go to category 2170P-2 and item RGBS and set the value to 7 (all panels
on).
8. Change the gray window to a value of around 70-50 IRE. Do not use an
IRE value less than 30 because of probable problems with the panels not
tracking well at low levels.
9. Set BDRV to zero and then increase BDRV until the screen just looks gray
and stop. I use a photographic gray card with either indirect outside
lighting or a 6500K light source to judge this. Be very careful not to make
the grays overly blue. Many people think 6500k grays are slightly sepia
toned.
10. Place a gray scale ramp (100-0 IRE) on the screen.
11. Adjust BCUT if you see a problem with low IRE grays.
12. Go back to step 8 if you changed BCUT.
13. Readjust the color decoder if you have done this previously.
14. Write the results to memory and copy to other inputs if you like the results
if not just change the input and everything will go back to normal.
Note: Here are some readings at D6500 with a light meter (AEMC CA813)
using Avia filters that could be useful to others: Blue –6.84% of Green, Red –
61.8% of Green. This ratio should be close for all of these sets.

highlighted in yellow to invoke these.

These settings allow you to have effectively different user menu settings
for each input. Set these based on your personal preference or calibration
screens like THX Optimode.

A Setting these identical helps all the other settings stays the same.
BThis setting improves the contrast on the screen.
CThe color decoder settings are used to balance the level of each color relative to
that found in white.
DLook at faces to judge this on other inputs.

Visual Procedure For Color Decoder:
You need color test patterns like those found on AVIA to set the color decoder
properly. Use only the blue LCD panel and the blue pattern to set color and hue,
the green pattern and LCD panel is used to set GYR & GYB, the red pattern and
LCD panel is used to set RYR & RYB. To switch the panels onand off use RGBS
in category 2170P-2.
The colored filters can also be used, but the green with Avia is much less
accurate than switching the panels. You need to view a display like THX
Optimode for setting picture level and increase SPIC only to the point where the
light grays do not shift in color.
Light Meter Procedure For Color Decoder:
Use the special Avia color bar pattern with the 77 IRE white bar below each color bar
and the blue and red filters included with Avia. This minimizes the shift in brightness
caused by a change in horizontal position.
Use the blue filter to set the adjustments for blue. The filter should be between the
light meter and the screen with the sensor pressed up to the screen. Set the level of
blue to match the level of blue in white with the COLOR adjustment. Then adjust
HUE by measuring the level of blue in cyan and magenta and match them to the
level of blue in white.
Next, use the red filter to set the color decoder for red. Adjust RYR (red level) by
setting the red bar intensity to match the white bar with the red filter. Adjust RYB
by setting the red level in yellow and magenta to match that in white.
Green requires a different method because the color filters are inadequate for that
primary. The color bars should follow the following intensity pattern for NTSC relative
to white:

HD should follow the following pattern if you had a test pattern:
