INSTALLATION
Guidelines
• Use the Multi-Room Selectors only with amplifiers rated at 125 watts per channel or less.
• The InstaLLock™connectors on the S4 and S8 accept wire from 18 AWG to 14 AWG. If you are not sure
about the gauge of the wire you intend to use please consult your SpeakerCraft dealer.
• To avoid possible damage to your amplifier, pay careful attention to the section titled "Protection Settings".
•There are two sets of adhesive area labels for use in identifying the locations of speakers. One set is for
use on the front of the connector. The other set is included with the InstaLLock™connector and can be
used to more clearly identify wires once they are secured to the InstaLLock™connector.
Placement
The unique suction feet on the bottom of the selectors
increase placement options and hold the selector securely
when buttons are depressed. The suction feet are designed
to work well with a variety of textures that cover the tops of
other components.
Connecting Wires to the Selector
For easy installation SpeakerCraft supplies the InstaLLock™
wiring harness for connecting the speakers to the selector.
If you are using the Multi-Room Selector with distributed
audio, you may wish to connect the InstaLLock™wiring
harness to the speaker wires and then at a latter time plug
it into the selector. The selector can then be quickly con-
nected at the time of "trim out".
S4 and S8 Multi-Room
Speaker Selectors
with InstaLLock™Connector
THE SPEAKERCRAFT MULTI-ROOM SPEAKER SELECTORS ALLOW THE OPERATION OF MULTIPLE PAIRS OF
SPEAKERS WHEN USING ONE AMPLIFIER OR RECEIVER. ONCE THE SPEAKERS ARE CONNECTED TO THE
SELECTOR, INDIVIDUAL PAIRS MAY BE TURNED ON OR OFF AS DESIRED USING THE PUSH BUTTONS ON THE
FRONT OF THE SELECTOR. ONE PAIR, ALL PAIRS, OR ANY ASSORTMENT OF PAIRS MAY BE PLAYED. WHEN
ENGAGED, A PROTECTION CIRCUIT ALLOWS THE AMPLIFIER TO OPERATE SAFELY, EVEN WHEN ALL SELECTED
SPEAKERS ARE PLAYING.
THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING THE InstaLLock™CONNECTOR MAKES WIRING THE SELECTOR TO YOUR SPEAK-
ERS QUICK AND EASY. WITH A SIMPLE PUSH OF A FINGER UNSTRIPPED WIRES PLACED INTO THE CONNECTOR
ARE SOLIDLY SECURED AND A PERFECT ELECTRICAL BOND IN CREATED. THE PROCESS IS QUICK, SIMPLE,
AND ELIMINATES THE WORRY OF WIRES BECOMING LOOSE.

Where to Connect Speakers to the InstaLLock™Connector (see Figures #2 & #3)
The InstaLLock™connector has numbered locations that correspond to
the numbered switches on the front of the selector. Connect each pair
of speakers to the number you wish to use to operate that pair on the
front of the selector. Each location on the connector is marked with a
number that corresponds to the front of the selector.
There is a set of area labels provided to make identifying the location of
the speaker pairs easier. This label set includes over a hundred area
descriptions. If you wish, use a label from the set to identify the location
of that pair of speakers where they enter the connector. A separate set
of labels is provided for use on the front of the selector. (see Figure #3)
Connecting the Speaker Wires to the InstaLLock™
Connector. (see Figures #2 & #3)
It is not necessary to strip any of the wires before installing
them into the connector. The connector pierces the insulation of
the speaker wire and then wedges itself into the strands of the
wire. This creates a "weld" that is superior to conventional ter-
mination techniques.
1) Identify the proper lever location for the wire you are inserting using the markings on the connector
For example, #1 left positive.
2) Place the appropriate wire into the smallest hole it will fit into on the lever. Slide the wire all the way into the
channel until it won't go any further. This centers the wire best over the piercing blades.
3) With both the positive and negative wire for the speaker placed into the lever, push the lever down until it locks
into place. The wire is now secure
4) Repeat the above steps until all of the speakers are attached to the connector.
Plugging the InstaLLock™Connector into the Speaker Selector (see Figure #1)
Once the speaker wires are connected to the InstaLLock connector the connector can be plugged into the back of
the selector at any time.
NOTE: The S8 has two harnesses, 1-4 and 5-8. Match the numbered end of the InstaLLock™harness with the
numbered input on the speaker selector.
Labeling the front of the Selector and InstaLLock™Connector.
(see Figure#3)
There are two identical sets of adhesive labels included with the speaker
selector. These labels make it easy to identify which area has been
selected when the button is depressed. One set is for use on the front of
the selector and the other is for use on the InstaLLock™connector.
There are indentations above each button on the front of the selector.
Place the appropriate area label into each of these locations. If you can't
find the label you need you can create it by writing on one of the blank
labels using a pen or small marker.

OPERATION
Understanding the Protection Circuit
To prevent damage to your receiver or amplifier the S4 and S8 feature protection circuitry. When engaged the protection
features prevent damage from occurring to your amplifier.
When to Use the Front Mounted Protection Switch
The front speaker protection switch should be engaged under the following circumstances to best protect your amplifier.
The switch is "ON" when depressed:
Speakers Selected Front Protection Button
1 or 2 pair of 8 ohm speakers OFF
3 or more pairs of 8 ohm speakers ON
1 pair of 4 ohm speakers OFF
2, or more pairs of 4 ohm speakers ON
A combination of 4 and 8 ohm speakers ON
When to Use the Rear Mounted Protection Switch.
On the back of the selector there is a slide switch labeled "Continuous
Protection". When this button is in the "ON" position it will override the front pro-
tection button and assure that the protection circuitry is always on, no matter
what the position of the front button. This switch should be placed in the "ON"
position if you are concerned that someone unfamiliar with the system may fail to
properly use the front protection button.
Selecting Speakers
To turn a pair of speakers on, simply depresses the button associated with that pair. Please take precautions to make
sure that the amplifier volume is not set at a high level before you depress the button.
