perfectly matched to the Magnum XLS .52 two-stroke engine or the Magnum XL .70RFS four-stroke engine. From the rotating
retracts to the beautiful covering job with world-wide recognized Oracover, this is a model you'll be proud to own and you can bet that
it will attract attention at the field. At the field and in the air, this F4U Corsair looks great and flies even better.
The F4U Corsair ARF is completely built-up from laser-cut plywood and balsa. The all-wood construction technique used on the
wing makes aligment and assembly a breeze. The design is durable and stout, ensuring your investment will give you long-lasting
enjoyment. In addition to the F4U Corsair's Oracover covering material, the airplane features preinstalled 90º rotating retracts,
molded wheel cups, adjustable engine mounting beams, dual aileron servos and rear-mounted elevator and rudder servos for crisp,
solid control response. Details, such as a molded fiberglass cowling, molded clear canopy, molded dummy radial engine and an
antenna mast, plus a high-quality hardware package, round out this specatacular model.

SECTION 1: OUR RECOMMENDATIONS
This section describes our recommendations to help you in deciding which types of accessories to purchase for your new Sports-
man Aviation F4U Corsair ARF. Please read through this entire section very carefully. We have provided you with tips and
recommendations that, if followed, will result in a great flying airplane. Failure to follow our recommendations may
result in a poor flying airplane.
What Engine Should I Use?
If you prefer to use a two-stroke engine, we recommend using a .46 - .52 size engine. A strong
.46 size engine will fly the airplane with good authority and result in scale speed and performance.
A strong .52 size engine will fly the airplane with power to spare. Use a .52 size engine if you
plan on decking out your model with scale details or want faster flight speeds and more vertical
performance.
The engine is mounted at a 45º down angle, so you will need to use an aftermarket Pitt's style muffler
to divert the exhaust out the bottom of the cowling.
If you prefer to use a four-stroke engine, we recommend using a .65 - .70 size engine. A strong .65
size engine will fly the airplane with authority and result in scale speed and performance with the
great scale sound of the four-stroke engine. A strong .70 size engine will fly the airplane with power
to spare. Expect good vertical performance and plenty of extra power.
Again, the engine is mounted at a 45º down angle, but since the muffler pipe on most four-stroke
engines is adjustable, no aftermarket muffler will be necessary.

✦We don't suggest using an engine larger than we recommend. The airplane flies very well with the
recommended engine sizes, and using a larger, heavier engine will only result in the airplane being heavier with an increased
wing loading. Airplanes with higher than necessary wing loadings tend to exhibit poor flight performance, especially at slow speeds.
Be careful when adding scale details to the finished airplane. These add weight and in many instances the weight adds up fast.
Just remember that for the best flight performance the airplane should be kept as light as possible.
If you will be flying at high altitudes we strongly suggest using an engine
in the upper end of the recommended size range
What Radio System and Servos Should I Use?
Since there is no option for fixed landing gear, you will need to use a 5 or more channel
radio control system. Ideally, the transmitter should feature dual rates, servo reversing
and end point adjustments. Most newer radio control systems have these features
and more.
Regarding servos, you will need to use four standard ball bearing servos with a
minimum of 40oz/in of torque for the flight control surfaces and one standard servo for
the throttle. To operate the retractable landing gear, you will need to use one 180º low
profile retract servo.
You will also need a servo extension for the elevator, rudder and both aileron servos,
plus a Y-Harness to connect both aileron servos together.

What Else Do I Need?
There really isn't too much else that you'll need to finish the airplane. Most of the hardware
is included in the kit, so about the only thing else you'll need is a spinner nut to fit your
engine's crankshaft. For more scale realism, a pilot bust would be a good choice, and to
make filling the fuel tank easier, a remote fueling valve would be convenient. You'll also
need typical modeling supplies, such as foam rubber to protect your receiver and battery,
and fuel tubing.

The covering material used on the Sportsman Aviation F4U Corsair ARF is real iron-on, heat-shrink covering material. It is
possible with heat and humidity changes that the covering on your airplane may wrinkle or sag. This trait is inherent in all
types of heat-shrink material. To remove any wrinkles that might be visible you will need to use a heat-sealing covering iron.
Follow this simple procedure to remove the wrinkles:
❑Plug in and turn on the sealing iron to the medium-high temperature setting. Allow the sealing iron to heat up for approximately
5 - 7 minutes.
❑After the sealing iron has reached temperature, lightly apply the sealing iron to the wrinkled section of the covering. Move the
sealing iron slowly over the wrinkled section until the covering tightens and the wrinkles disappear.

✦You will notice that the color of the covering will darken when it is heated. When the covering cools back down,
it will return to its normal color.
☞If the color layer smears from any of the seams the temperature of the sealing iron is too hot. Turn the temperature dial down
and wait about 5 minutes for the sealing iron to adjust to the lower temperature. You can remove any excess color streaks using a
paper towel soaked with a small quantity of Acetone.
We do not suggest storing your airplane in an extremely hot environment (like the back of your car in direct sunlight)
for any length of time. The extreme heat could distort the molded parts and/or cause the covering material to wrinkle and possibly
damage the fragile components of the radio control system.

✦The fiberglass cowling, radiator scoops, dummy radial engine and canopy on your F4U Corsair ARF are painted.
Do not use any harsh chemical cleaners, such as Acetone, to clean the painted surfaces. Use of rubbing alcohol is okay and will
not damage the paint.

✦Important Information About the C/A Style Hinges Included with Your F4U Corsair ARF✦✦
✦✦
✦
The hinges are NOT glued into place from the factory, they are simply slid into place dry for shipping purposes. You must glue
them into place.
The F4U Corsair ARF uses C/A style hinges to hinge the control surfaces. These hinges are designed to be glued into place using
thin C/A. Do not glue these hinges into place using any other type of glue, such as thick C/A or epoxy. Use of any adhesive other
than thin C/A could result in failure of the hinges during flight.
For flutter-free control surfaces, it is imperative that the hinges be glued in properly. This is achieved by having a tight hinge gap
(no more than 1/32" wide) and using plenty of thin C/A glue. Poor hinge installation can lead to control surface flutter which can
result in a catastrophic failure of the airframe.
❑Remove the aileron and hinges from one wing panel.
❑Push two T-Pins through the center of three C/A style aileron
hinges, as shown.

✦The T-Pins will keep the hinges centered and square
to the leading edge while you are hinging the aileron.
❑Slide one hinge into each hinge slot in the aileron, making sure that
you push each hinge in up to the T-Pins. Don't glue the hinges into
place yet, though.

✦IMPORTANT✦✦
✦✦
✦If you look closely at the hinges, you will notice that
each hinge has a thin slot cut in it. This slot helps wick the thin C/A
glue deep into the hinge slot. When sliding the hinge into place, make
sure that this slot is perpendicular to the leading edge of the aileron.

❑Push the aileron and its hinges into the hinge slots in the trailing edge of the wing panel. Remove the T-Pins and push the aileron
into its final position. The aileron should be pushed firmly up against the trailing edge, so that there is a minimal hinge gap (no more
than 1/32" wide), and the inner and outer ends of the aileron should not rub against the wing panel. There should be about a
1/16-3/32" wide gap between them.
❑While holding the aileron tight against the trailing edge of the wing
panel, pivot the aileron down about 45º and apply 5-6 drops of thin C/A
to the exposed area of each hinge. Turn the wing panel over and repeat
for the other side of the hinges.
☞Remove any C/A that may run down the hinge line, using C/A
Debonder.

After the C/A has fully cured, gently grasp the aileron and wing panel and pull on the aileron like you are trying to
pull out the hinges. The hinges should hold securely. If one or more hinges feels loose, apply more C/A to the hinge(s) and
allow it to completely cure.
❑Repeat the previous procedures to hinge the aileron to the second wing panel, making sure to check the integrity of the
hinges after the C/A fully cures. The last thing you want is for a hinge to come loose during flight.

STEP 2: INSTALLING THE AILERON SERVOS
❑Plug one 12" servo extension onto the aileron servo lead.
❑To prevent the plugs from pulling apart during assembly, or worse,
during flight, secure the plugs together, using a short piece of 3/8"
diameter heat-shrink tubing.
❑Install the rubber grommets and brass collets onto one aileron servo, making sure to install the collets with the flanges toward
the bottom of the servo.
❑Remove the servo hatch cover from the bottom of one wing panel,
then use a modeling knife to cut away and remove the covering material
from over the precut slot in the hatch cover.
☞The servo hatch cover is held in place from the factory, using clear tape. If any residue is left on the wing from the clear tape,
it can be removed using rubbing alcohol or Acetone.
❑Connect your radio system and plug the aileron servo into the receiver. Center the servo by double-checking that the aileron trim
lever on your transmitter is centered.

❑Install the servo horn onto the servo, making sure that it's centered,
as shown.
❑Install the servo horn retaining screw to secure the servo horn to the servo.

❑Temporarily place the aileron servo, along with two hardwood blocks,
onto the bottom of the servo hatch cover. The servo arm should be
inserted through, and centered within, the precut slot, as shown.

❑After the epoxy has completely set up, mount the aileron servo to
the hardwood blocks.
❑Remove the aileron servo and carefully glue the two hardwood
blocks to the servo hatch cover, using a generous amount of 5 minute
epoxy. Remove any excess epoxy, using a paper towel and rubbing
alcohol, and allow the epoxy to completely set up before proceeding.

STEP 3: INSTALLING THE SERVO HATCH COVERS
❑Working with one servo hatch cover and wing panel for now, run the
servo extension lead through the wing, using the factory-installed
length of string; run it through the wing from the servo hatch and out the
root rib.
☞Tie the end of the string to the servo extension plug, then pull the
string from the other end to pull the servo extension lead through the
wing panel.

❑Set the servo hatch cover into place, making sure that the servo arm is positioned toward the root edge of the wing panel.
❑While holding the servo hatch cover firmly in place, carefully drill
four 1/16" diameter pilot holes through the servo hatch cover and into

hatch cover.
❑Secure the servo hatch cover assembly to the wing, using four
M2 x 10mm wood screws.
❑Repeat the previous procedures to install the second servo hatch
cover assembly onto the other wing panel.
STEP 4: ALIGNING THE WING PANELS
❑Using a modeling knife, cut away and remove the excess covering
material that overlaps onto the root ribs of both outer wing panels and
the center wing panel, making sure to leave about 1/16" of covering
material overlapped onto the root ribs, so it doesn't pull away.

☞If the wing joiner does not fit properly, use 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block to lightly sand the edges and tips of the
wing joiner, until you are satisfied with the fit.
❑Carefully slide both wing panels together with the wing joiner
temporarily installed (without using glue).
❑While holding the two wing panels together firmly, make sure that
both wing panels are lined up at both the leading edges and the trailing
edges, then look carefully at the glue joint: the wing panels should fit
together tightly with few or no gaps in the joint.
☞If the wing panels do not fit together properly, remove the wing joiner and use 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block to
lightly sand the edges and tips of the wing joiner, until you are satisfied with the fit.
❑When satisfied with the fit and alignment, pull the wing panels apart
and remove the wing joiner.
❑Apply a long strip of masking tape to the top and bottom edges of the
root rib on the outer wing panel and the center wing panel.
☞The masking tape will prevent excess epoxy from getting onto the
wing panels when you join them.
STEP 5: JOINING THE WING PANELS
❑Mix a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy. Working with the center wing panel for now, apply a thin layer of epoxy inside the
wing joiner box and to only half of the wing joiner. Make sure to cover the top and bottom, as well as the sides, and use enough
epoxy to fill any gaps.

✦Use only 30 or 45 minute epoxy to install the wing joiner and to join the wing panels together. Do not use 5
minute epoxy. It is not strong enough. If you use 5 minute epoxy, the wing will fail during flight.
❑Slide the wing joiner into the center wing panel up to its centerline. Quickly remove any excess epoxy, using a paper towel and
rubbing alcohol, and allow the epoxy to set up before proceeding.
❑After the epoxy has set up, test-fit both wing panels together again to double-check that they still fit together properly. Check the
leading and trailing edges, too. It's important that they be even with each other.
❑Mix a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy and apply a thin layer to the exposed half of the wing joiner, the inside of the wing
joiner box in the outer wing panel, and the entire surface of BOTH root ribs. Make sure to use enough epoxy to fill any gaps.

alcohol, and use pieces of masking tape to hold the two wing panels aligned until the epoxy fully cures.

STEP 6: CHECKING THE WING PANEL GLUE JOINTS
❑Once the epoxy has fully cured, remove the masking tape and double-check both wing panel glue joints. If any gaps are present
in either joint, mix a small quantity of 30 minute epoxy and carefully fill any remaining gaps. Quickly remove any excess epoxy, using
a paper towel and rubbing alcohol, and allow the epoxy to thoroughly cure.

✦Do not omit this procedure. All three wing panels should fit together tightly, but it's possible to have some small
gaps that appear in the glue joints after the epoxy has cured.
STEP 7: APPLYING THE WING JOINT COVERING MATERIAL
❑Using a heat-sealing iron, carefully apply the four strips of covering
material over the top and bottom of the two glue joints. Apply the
bottom strips first, then the top strips.

☞The covering material should be cut away from over the predrilled holes, but if not, the holes are located 3/4" in front of the
trailing edge and 1-3/4" in from the wing panel glue joints.

from inside the outline you drew.

STEP 2: MOUNTING THE WING
❑Place the wing into the wing saddle, push it forward completely, then push the trailing edge down into place.
☞Two holes have been predrilled into the forward bulkhead to accept the wing hold-down dowels in the leading edge of the wing.
❑Align the holes in the wing with the preinstalled blind nuts in the wing
mounting block inside the fuselage.
❑Secure the wing into place, using two M4 x 35mm socket-cap screws
and two M4 flat washers.
☞Don't overtighten the screws. You don't want to crush the wing.
STEP 3: INSTALLING THE BELLY PAN
❑With the wing installed onto the fuselage, position the belly pan onto the
wing. When lined up properly, the curved sides and bottom of the belly pan
should be even with the curved sides and bottom of the fuselage, and there
should be few or no gaps between the base of the belly pan and the wing.
☞You may need to trim the back edges of the mounting flanges on
the belly pan to achieve a perfect fit with the trailing edge of the wing.

without interference, there should be about a 1/16" wide gap between

❑Slide the horizontal stabilizer into the mounting slot and center it by
carefully measuring out from each side of the fuselage to each end of

centered, both measurements will be equal.
☞Make sure that the stabilizer is pushed completely forward. There
should be room at the trailing edge for the elevator joiner wire to
pivot freely.
❑When you're satisfied that the stabilizer is centered at the trailing
edge, draw a mark on each side of the stabilizer (at the trailing edge)
where it meets the fuselage sides.
❑With the marks on the stabilizer lined up with the fuselage sides, hold
only the trailing edge of the stabilizer in position, using a T-Pin.

✦The front of the stabilizer should be able to pivot from side to side and the back should stay firmly in place and
aligned. The trailing edge should not be allowed to move from side to side.
❑With the wing mounted to the fuselage, use a ruler to measure the
distance between the tips of the stabilizer and the tips of the wing. Pivot
the front of the stabilizer until both of these measurements are equal.
☞When both of these measurements are equal, you're assured
that the stabilizer is square to the wing.
❑When you're satisfied that the stabilizer is square to the wing, use a pencil to draw a couple of marks on each side of the front of
the stabilizer where it and the fuselage sides meet, then use a couple of T-Pins to hold the stabilizer firmly in place and aligned.

✦You MUST slide the elevator joiner wire into the stabilizer mounting slot BEFORE installing the stabilizer. If
you don't, it will be impossible to slide the elevator joiner wire into place after the stabilizer is installed.

❑With the stabilizer held firmly in place, look from the front of the
airplane at both the wing and the stabilizer. When aligned properly, the
stabilizer should be parallel to the wing.
☞If the stabilizer is out of alignment, remove it and use 220 grit sandpaper
with a sanding block to sand down the higher side of the stabilizer
mounting slot, then reinstall the stabilizer and check the alignment once
more. Repeat this procedure until you are satisfied with the alignment.
❑When satisfied with the alignment, use a pencil to draw a line on
each side of the stabilizer where it meets the fuselage sides. Do this on
both the top and the bottom.
STEP 2: MOUNTING THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER
❑Remove the stabilizer from the fuselage and leave the elevator
joiner wire in the slot.
❑Using a modeling knife, carefully cut away and remove the covering
material from between the lines you drew. Do this on both the top and
the bottom.

with only enough pressure to cut through only the covering itself.
Cutting down into the balsa structure could weaken the stabilizer and

❑To make it less messy during installation, apply masking tape to the
fuselage around the side of the mounting slot that the stabilizer will slide
into. Apply masking tape to the top and bottom of the corresponding
side of the stabilizer, too.
❑Partially slide the stabilizer into the mounting slot.

✦Because the stabilizer has to slide into place through
the fuselage, apply epoxy only to the stabilizer. This will prevent the
epoxy from spreading over the entire length of one half of the stabilizer
when you slide it into place.
❑Mix and apply a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy to ONLY the top and bottom gluing surfaces of the stabilizer.
❑Being careful not to get any epoxy on the elevator joiner wire, push the stabilizer into place and realign it, double-checking all of
your measurements once more before the epoxy sets up. Quickly remove any excess epoxy and use pieces of masking tape or
T-Pins to hold the stabilizer in place and aligned until the epoxy has fully cured.
❑After the epoxy has fully cured, remove the masking tape and look closely at the glue joint. If there are any gaps between the
stabilizer and the fuselage, fill them using 30 minute epoxy for added strength. Again, before the epoxy sets up, remove any excess
epoxy, using a paper towel and rubbing alcohol.

STEP 3: HINGING THE ELEVATOR HALVES
❑Temporarily slide three elevator hinges into each elevator half. Don't
glue them into place yet.
❑Using a modeling knife, cut away and remove the covering material
from over the precut slot in the leading edge of the root end of each
elevator half.
❑Center the elevator joiner wire and use a pencil to carefully mark the
90º bend in each end of the joiner wire onto the elevator halves.
❑Remove the elevator halves from the stabilizer and carefully drill one
3/32" diameter, 3/4" deep hole into the leading edge of each elevator
half, using the marks you drew as a guide. Be careful that you don't drill
out through the top or bottom of the elevator halves.

✦The pilot holes should be centered within the
precut slot and drilled perpendicular to the leading edge.
❑Push each elevator half and its hinges into the hinge slots in the trailing edge of the stabilizer, making sure that the elevator joiner
wire is firmly seated within the precut slot in each elevator half. Both elevator halves should be pushed firmly up against the trailing
edge, so that there is a minimal hinge gap (no more than 1/32" wide), and the end of each elevator half should be even with the ends
of the stabilizer.

✦You may need to cut the slots for the elevator joiner wire deeper, so that the elevator halves can be pushed
forward enough to result in no more than a 1/32" wide hinge gap.
❑When satisfied with the fit, remove both elevator halves from the stabilizer, then cut out a 1-3/4" long x 1" wide piece of waxed paper.
❑Working with one half for now, use 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the end of the elevator joiner wire to roughen the surface,
then mix a small quantity of 5 minute epoxy and apply a thin layer of it to the end of the elevator joiner wire and into the pilot hole and
the precut slot in the leading edge of the matching elevator half.
❑Slide the piece of waxed paper between the elevator joiner wire and the trailing edge of the stabilizer, then push the elevator half
and its hinges into the hinge slots in the trailing edge of the stabilizer, making sure that the elevator joiner wire is firmly seated in the
precut slot.

halves are even with the ends of the stabilizer.

exposed area of each hinge. Turn the fuselage over and repeat for
the other side of the hinges.
☞Remove any C/A that may run down the hinge line, using C/A
Debonder.
❑Allow the C/A and epoxy to dry for about 15 minutes, then pivot the
elevator half up and down several times to free up the hinges.

STEP 2: ALIGNING AND MOUNTING THE VERTICAL STABILIZER
❑Remove the rudder and the two hinges from the vertical stabilizer and set them aside for now.
❑Push the vertical stabilizer down into its mounting slot. To align it
properly, the trailing edge of the stabilizer should be gently pushed against
the front edge of the tail wheel wire and the stabilizer should be pushed
down firmly. Use a builder's triangle to check and make sure that the
vertical stabilizer is perpendicular to the horizontal stabilizer, too.
❑While holding the vertical stabilizer firmly in place, use a pencil to
draw a line on each side of the vertical stabilizer where it meets the top
of the fuselage.
