PaintStripping
WARNING:Extremecareshouldbetakenwhenstrippingpaint.The
peelings,residueandvaporsofpaintmaycontain
lead,
whichis
poisonous.Anypre-1977paintmaycontainleadandpaintapplied
tohomespriorto1950islikelytocontain
lead.
Oncedepositedon
surfaces,handtomouthcontactcanresultintheingestionof
lead.
Exposuretoevenlowlevelsofleadcancauseirreversiblebrainand
nervoussystemdamage;youngandunbornchildrenare
particularlyvulnerable.
Beforebeginninganypaintremovalprocessyoushoulddetermine
whetherthepaintyouareremovingcontains
lead.
Thiscanbedone
byyourlocalhealthdepartmentorbya professionalwhouseda
paintanalyzertochecktheleadcontactofthepainttoberemoved.

Personsremovingpaintshouldfollowtheseguidelines.
1.
Movetheworkpieceoutdoors.Ifthisisnotpossible,keepthe
workareawellventilated.Openthewindowsandputan
exhaustfaninoneofthem.Besurethefanismovingtheair
frominsidetooutside.
2.
Removeorcoveranycarpets,rugs,furniture,clothing,cooking
utensilsandairducts.
3.Placedropclothsintheworkareatocatchanypaintchipsor
peelings.Wearprotectiveclothingsuchasextraworkshirts,
overallsandhats.
4.
Workinoneroomata time.Fumishingsshouldberemovedor
placedinthecenteroftheroomandcovered.Workareas
shouldbesealedofffromtherestofthedwellingbysealing
doorwayswithdropcloths.
5.Children,pregnantorpotentiallypregnantwomenandnursing
mothersshouldnotbepresentintheworkareauntiltheworkis
doneandallcleanupiscomplete.
6.Weara dustrespiratormaskora dualfilter(dustandfume)
respiratormaskwhichhasbeenapprovedbytheOccupational
SafetyandHealthAdministration(OSHA),theNationalInstitute
ofSafetyandHealth(NIOSH),ortheUnitedStatesBureauof
Mines.Thesemasksandreplaceablefiltersarereadilyavailable
atmajorhardwarestores.Besurethemaskfits.Beardsand
facialhairmaykeepmasksfromsealingproperly.Changefilters
often.

7.Usecautionwhenoperatingtheheatgun.Keeptheheatgun
movingasexcessiveheatwillgeneratefumeswhichcanbe
inhaledbytheoperator

andfaceandrinsemouthbeforeeatingordrinking.Donot
smokeorchewgumortobaccointheworkarea,

phosphate(TSP)towashandmopareas.

additionalsupport.Whenusingtheunitintheuprightp>osition,besurethecordis
placedinsucha positionthatitwillpreventtippingtheheatgunover,pullingthe
heatgunofftheworksurfaceorcausingtrippingoverthe
cord.
TheHeatGunprovidesa lowvelocitystreamofhotairprovidingrapidheatingfor
applicationssuchasstrippingpaint,thawingfrozenpipes,forrningplastics,soldering
copperpipeandapplyingheatshrinl^abletubing.Theproperamountofheatforeach
applicationisdependentupontemperatuerangeselected(See"Switch"),distance
betweennozzleandworkpieceandlengthoftimeheatisapplied.Therecommended
procedureistoexperimentwithscrapmaterialsandstartwithlowesttemperature
range.
Usecareinapproachingtheworkuntilthepropercombinationofheat,distance
andtimeofapplicationhasbeenobtained.Itisgenerallybesttousea gentlebackand
forthmotionwhenapplyingheatunlessithastjeendeterminedthata concentrated
heatisdesirable.
