DC DC Ground Electrode Conductor:
A DC Ground Electrode Conductor (typically #6 bare CU) must be installed
and terminated at the marked location on the Sun Bandit AC Micro-Grid
Inverters. The DC Ground Electrode Conductor must be run unspliced or
irreversibly spliced from the marked grounding locations on the inverters to
the premises grounding electrode system (ie ground rod). PV Panel frames,
mounting rails, and other metal equipment are not to be used as part of
the DC Ground Electrode Conductor.
AC AC Ground Electrode Conductor and AC System Grounding:
Each Sun Bandit AC Micro-Grid circuit is a separately derived AC system
and requires a system bonding jumper between the neutral AC Micro-Grid
output conductor and ground. The system bonding jumper must be
installed in one and only one location at the first disconnecting
means on the AC side of the Sun Bandit Micro-Grid Inverters. From
this point an AC Ground Electrode Conductor (typically #6 bare CU) must
be run unspliced or irreversibly spliced to the premises grounding electrode
system (ie ground rod).

Pre-Installation Tips
Read and follow these precautions
before you begin:
The supplied Mix Valve must be installed on
all systems as shown!
Read all manuals and safety information that
pertain to your system prior to installation.
Fill Water Heater with water before making
any electrical connections to protect resistive
elements!
Modules produce voltage when exposed to
sunlight, be aware and avoid shock.
Always check with your Authority Having
Jurisdiction (AHJ) about your proposed
grounding methodology prior to installation.
Items Needed for Installation:
All systems require you to supply the following items:
1. Wire from junction box on roof to water heater in
mechanical room.
2. #6 bare copper grounding wire from AC Micro-Grid
Inverters to Ground Electrode and AC Disconnect
to Ground Electrode (separate parallel runs are
required).
Depending upon the system you’ve purchased,
you may also need the following items:
1. Modules and Racking.
2. AC Disconnect with fuse to match your system.
3. Junction box and ashing for connecting whip to
wires beneath the roof.

expansion tank suggestions.
Plumb to the Hot/Cold
connections at the top of the
Mix Valve.
Install the supplied Mix Valve
to the top of the tank.
Fill the tank with water.

Step 2. Connect Water Heater to Grid
Connect Grid side to match your backup type (Electrical or Gas).
Fill Water Heater with water before
making electrical connections.
The water heater is ready to
be used as a normal water
heater until the solar side of
the system is connected.

Step 3. AC Disconnect & Monitor
Refer to the 3-line Electrical Diagram for your particular system.
Connect the Monitor of your primary circuit to the Upper/Lower junction box
of the Water Heater.
If your system is equipped with a secondary circuit, connect the Monitor to
the Single junction box of the Water Heater.
Connect the corresponding AC
Disconnect to the Monitor for each
circuit per your system diagram.

Set All AC Micro-Grid
(Solar) thermostats to
Very Hot.
Set the Grid (Utility)
thermostat as low as possible to
maintain customer comfort. The
factory setting is usually effective.
Step 4. Adjust Thermostats Disconnect Fuse Block or shut off
AC Disconnect to avoid shock.
Remove all covers and foam
insulation to adjust the element
thermostats. Remove plastic shield to
verify all connections are tight.

Step 5. AC Micro-Grid Inverter(s) & Racking
Mount the Racking per your system
design specications and racking
manufacturer.
Mount the AC Micro-Grid Inverter(s) to the racking per your system design.
Space each AC Micro-Grid Inverter beneath a module within reach of the
corresponding pair of module connections and inverters (if present).
Identify and verify proper location of Master and Subordinate on 3-line.
Refer to the AC Micro-Grid Inverter Installation manual for warnings and details.

Step 6. DC Equipment Ground
A DC Ground Electrode Conductor (typically #6 bare CU) must be installed
and terminated at a grounding lug on each Sun Bandit AC Micro-Grid Inverter.
It must be run unspliced or irreversibly spliced from the grounding lug on each
inverter to the premises grounding electrode system (ie; ground rod).
PV Module frames, mounting rails, and other metal equipment are not
to be used as part of the DC Ground Electrode Conductor.
Check with your Authority
Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
to approve the building ground
electrode prior to installation.
Splice at the Grounding
Electrode (ie; ground rod).

Step 6. DC Equipment Ground (cont’d)
Run the bare #6 copper over the roof to the Ground Electrode (building
ground). Insulated, stranded #6 copper can be used as an alternative when
run in conduit or raceway.
Go through the junction box on the
roof as an alternative.

Step 7. AC Equipment Ground
Each Sun Bandit AC Micro-Grid circuit is a separately derived AC system
and requires a system bonding jumper between the neutral AC Micro-Grid
output conductor and ground.
The system bonding jumper must be installed in one and only one location
at the rst disconnecting means on the AC side of the Sun Bandit Micro-
Grid Inverters.
Check with your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to
approve the building ground electrode prior to installation.
From this point an AC Ground
Electrode Conductor (typically #6
bare CU) must be run unspliced or
irreversibly spliced to the premises
grounding electrode system (ie
ground rod).

Run corresponding wires from the roof down to the AC Disconnect. Make connections to mating wires of the Whip
within a junction box and to the AC Disconnect using appropriate screw terminals.

Connect Modules to corresponding channels on the supplied AC Micro-Grid Inverter(s) per system design within the
3-line diagram. Mount the Modules per your system design and Module manufacturer specications.
Step 9. Connect to Modules

Racking Installation Manual for detailed information.

Temporarily install fuse and fuse block at the AC Disconnect, then use a volt meter to measure resistance of the wiring
from the Whip through the roof to the Resistive Elements in the tank. The resistance between line and neutral should
be 18-20 ohms. The resistance between neutral and ground should be almost 0 ohms.
Check all connections until acceptable ranges are measured.
Connect the Whip from the Junction Box
to the Master AC Micro-Grid Inverter;
align and twist to lock the collar.
This is the nal connection you should
make in your system.
Your system is ready to Turn On!
Step 10. Connect to Whip Connect these wires last.
Remove fuse block before
proceeding to protect the
system. Assume these connectors
are live during daylight hours.

Step 11. Commission System
The System is ready to Turn On.
With the appropriate sized fuse in the fuse block, insert the fuse block into the
AC Disconnect.
The Monitor’s display will light up
to show production; this may take
several minutes.
With fuse installed,
Insert fuse block into
AC Disconnect.
