IMPORTANT
RECOMMENDATIONS & WARNINGS
ADHERE CLOSELY TO SUNFX GUIDELINES
SunFX has signicant experience in providing the very best recommendaons and
techniques for the use of our SunFX products and SunFX Pro equipment. Non-adherence to
these guidelines can lead to problems including equipment malfuncon, incorrect
applicaon and undue wastage of tanning soluon. Non- adherence can even cause
cosmec problems on clients leading to possible contraindicaons directly related to poor
spray applicaon technique. We highly recommend all therapists and users of the SunFX
Pro systems and tanning products become thoroughly familiar with the informaon
contained in this training manual and, if available, on the training DVD supplied.
CHILDREN
Children under the age of 16 should have a parent or a guardian present whilst being
sprayed.
PREGNANCY
SunFX does not recommend spraying pregnant or lactang mothers without medical
guidance.
SENSITIVE SKIN
Clients who have very sensive skin or who are unsure of their skin type, should consult
their GP or Doctor before receiving a test patch or full body spray tan. A test patch should
be done at least 24 hours before their full body spray.
HANDS
We recommend you wear disposable gloves to ensure that any spilled tanning soluon will
not stain your hands.
INHALATION BY THERAPIST
Although inhalaon of our product has not been shown to be harmful, sta members
spraying repeated customers in a conned area may desire to use a disposable paint mask
or similar protecon to eliminate excessive inhalaon of any atomized product.
PROTECTION FOR CLIENTS
SunFX recommends having eye protecon (usually thin solarium goggles are ne) nasal
plugs and lip balm available in the event a client requests one or all of these.
NO SP FACTOR
A tan produced by applicaon of DHA does not oer any protecon against UV rays. Please
ensure your clients are advised of this. We recommend the use of a quality sun block when
exposing your skin to the sun’s UV radiaon.

SYSTEM SET UP
A QUICK SET UP GUIDE FOR YOUR SUNFX PRO TANNING SYSTEM
SUNFX PRO PROFESSIONAL TANNING SYSTEM
PRO SERIES TOWER
The SunFX Pro Professional turbine produces a constant supply of air to be applied
through the hand held spray applicator. Air is taken in at the base of the unit then
through the hose and directed to the applicator.
Please ensure the turbine unit is on a at working surface or oor, this will prevent the
vent being covered which may cause overheang and damage to the turbine motor. We
also recommend that the turbine be placed as far away from the spray area as possible
to limit any spray being sucked in by the vent. Hint: Place around to the side of the tent
There are three indentaons in the top part of the unit. These are used to hold the spray
applicator when not in use. At the base of the unit there is an intake for the hose and a
place to plug in the power cord.
WARNING: If the electrical cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a cord set
recommended by the manufacturer or its service agent. Please contact SunFX for further
advice in this situaon.

SUNFX PRO PROFESSIONAL TANNING SYSTEM
PRO SERIES MINI
The SunFX Pro Mini turbine is very much like the SunFX Pro Professional Series Tower. It
allows a constant supply of air to be placed through the spray applicator. Air is taken in at
the base of the unit then through the hose and directed to the applicator.
The Pro Series Mini is designed to be mounted conveniently on the wall. It can also be
placed on the oor.
If choosing a oor locaon please ensure the turbine unit is on a at working surface as
this will prevent the vent being covered which may cause overheang and damage to
the turbine motor. We also recommend that the turbine be placed as far away from the
spray area as possible to limit any spray being sucked in by the vent.
You will nd the Mini series has an intake for the hose and a place to plug in the power
cord at the base.
A wall mounng kit can be, provided enabling you to aach the turbine to the wall.
For added convenience an applicator holder is included. This holder is designed to be
mounted on the wall.

HOW TO USE YOUR SUNFX PRO PROFESSIONAL APPLICATOR
STEP 2
FILLING SOLUTION CUP
Fill soluon cup approximately ¾ full with SunFX Pro
Premium Tanning Soluon. Wipe any excess soluon
from (1) inside of the applicator body and (2) outside of
the soluon cup.
CAUTION:
Filling the cup beyond this recommended level may cause
spillage when returning the cup to the spray applicator.
Excess soluon may also be spilled or splashed onto the
inside of the applicator causing it to drip down during
spraying.
STEP 1
UNFASTEN SOLUTION CUP
To unfasten soluon cup simply rotate cup Clockwise.

STEP 3
FASTEN SOLUTION CUP BACK ON TO APPLICATOR
To fasten applicator cup back on to applicator simply rotate
counter-clockwise unl reasonably ght.
CAUTION:
If any leaking occurs simply ghten cup further.
STEP 4
ATTACHING HOSE TO APPLICATOR
Line up the locang groove in the hose with the tab inside
the applicator handle. Turn counter-clockwise and
GENTLY lock end of the hose securely into the handle of
the applicator.
CAUTION:
Excessive force may result in the bending or breaking of
these parts.

STEP 5
ATTACHING HOSE TO TURBINE
The hose has 2 small tabs on the end. Posion these
correctly with the slots in the base of the turbine and
then GENTLY turn counter-clockwise to lock the hose
into the unit.
CAUTION:
Excessive force may result in damage to these parts.
STEP 6
PLUG IN POWER CORD
FIRMLY push the power cord into the slot on the base
of the turbine or Mini and plug into power socket on
the wall.
YOUR SYSTEM IS NOW READY TO USE
STEP 7
TURN SYSTEM ON TO START SPRAYING
The power switch is located conveniently underneath the top of the Pro Tower system or
on the side of the Pro Mini system.

UV TANNING
One popular form of tanning is the use of the Ultra Violet (UV) method. This involves exposing the
body to direct sunlight or in a conned environment ulizing UV eming light bulbs, commonly
referred to as tanning salons or sun beds. UV tanning relies on the formaon of melanin in the lower
skin layers, which in response to the UV exposure, turn brown. It is this melanin that protects the skin
from damage by the sun by absorbing and scaering light. This method will turn the skin brown but
can also lead to acute and even chronic skin damage and may greatly increase the risk of skin cancer
SPRAY TANNING
An alternave method is the applicaon of cosmecs which cause the skin to turn brown.
DIHYDROXYACETONE : THE AMAZING DISCOVERY
Dihydroxyacetone is commonly abbreviated ‘DHA’. This unique ingredient was discovered over 50
years ago and has been gradually improved to oer excellent tanning results that rival or exceed that
from UV sources. DHA was originally used in oral medicaons to assist in the treatment of some
childhood diseases ( specically glycogen storage disease ) but its tanning eects were accidentally
stumbled upon when, by chance, it was spilled onto the skin.
DHA works by being applied to the skin. The DHA then reacts with the skin proteins found in the top
most layers of the skin. The brown hue can appear in as lile as 2 hours, but for best results 5-7 hours
will be required for the full tanning eect to take place. The extraordinary benet of DHA tanning is
that it can not be washed o, but fades as the upper layers of the epidermis are naturally exfoliated.
BRONZERS & HOW THEY WORK
As menoned DHA takes 5-7 hours to fully develop. Because of this there is a real need to use a
temporary cosmec color. These cosmec colors are oen referred to as Bronzers. Bronzers achieve
two things:
1. A visible guide to ensure proper coverage during spraying
2. To have the client leave the salon with a tan immediately aer spraying
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRONZERS & DHA
As explained previously, DHA causes a tan to develop during a protein reacon with the skin.
However, bronzers are cosmec colors that provide an instant color on top of the skin. They are
reasonably easy to remove in the rst shower. The aim is to ensure there is lile color dierence
between the DHA tan and the bronzers.

UNDERSTANDING THE STRUCTURES AND
MAKE UP OF SKIN AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO TANNING
SKIN STRUCTURE IN RELATION TO UV TANNING
Normal skin contains melanocytes.
Melanocytes release melanin into the upper
epidermis and form the natural color of the
skin.
When the body receives UV rays from the sun
or a solarium the body reacts by releasing
more melanin from the melanocytes. Melanin
has the unique ability to absorb UV rays, thus
protecng the skin from much of the UV. The
build up of melanin in the skin is what
produces a brown color of the skin we call a
tan.
As the body receives greater amounts of UV
the body produces greater amounts of
melanin. The body is reacng to the UV rays to
provide greater protecon. The skin connues
to ‘tan’ and turn darker from the saturaon of
melanin. (Interesngly, black skinned people
have large amounts of UV absorbing melanin
naturally in their body. This gives them a
natural protecon against UV exposure,
however ,even dark skinned people can receive
bad skin damage.)

SKIN STRUCTURE IN RELATION TO SKIN CANCER
Each me the body is exposed to UV rays some
of these rays penetrate deeper in the skin
breaking down the collagen layers. Over me,
especially from longer periods of exposure, the
UV light will cause abnormal changes in the
bodies cells. This is the major cause of skin
cancer and melanomas.
SKIN STRUCTURE IN RELATION TO SPRAY TANNING
Change in the Horny layer aer the spray tan
applicaon.
Note that there are no changes to the deeper
skin layers.
The applicaon of a spray tan diers greatly
from a UV tan. When the spray tan soluon is
applied to the skin, the DHA component reacts
with the dead protein of the skin found in the
horny layer. This reacon produces a browning
eect that resembles a tan.

SunFX has developed a core range of soluons in 3 dierent levels. Each level of soluon has
been mixed with a dierent degree of the acve ingredient DHA to allow a dierent color tone to
be achieved.
Light Summer: 9%
Mid Summer: 12%
Dark Summer: 15%
We then also oer a Speciality Range for those requiring “extra color” enhancement– for either
compeon, stage or just those clients that prefer a an extra deep color. These range in DHA
from 18% to 22%
Infused with organic and natural ingredients including Aloe Vera, Green Tea and Coconut
derivaves. When combined with our already natural and organic bases they provide a potent
combinaon of nourishing and hydrang benets. They deliver addional benets of providing
vitamins A, C & E as well as skin calming and rebuilding nutrients
The SunFX soluons Light Summer and Mid Summer have been mixed with the same bronzer
content, however, the Mid Summer soluon has a higher percentage of DHA. This means when
you spray with either of these soluons the client will come out the same color but aer a period
of me the person sprayed with Mid Summer will be darker. Dark Summer has a darker bronzer
and an even higher percentage of DHA than the Light Summer and Mid Summer and is
considerably darker aer it has developed.
STORAGE
SunFX Premium Spray Tanning Soluon should be stored in a cool dry place away from sunlight. .
For long term storage of unopened boles, place in a refrigerated area. Soluon can be kept at
room temperature during the day of spraying. It can be quite cold if you spray with soluon
directly from the fridge.
When you decide to use the soluon remember to SHAKE THE BOTTLE before use as some
seling may occur. This is very important and will allow you to give your client the best result and
maintain correct operaon of your spray equipment. The ‘use by date’ for soluon is located on
the underside of soluon bole.

SUNFX SOLUTIONS: ALMOST PERFECT :
WHAT ABOUT THE CUSTOMER ??
Lets clear up some Tanning Soluon misconcepons
Rapid 2 hour:
Rapid was developed to enable a client to spray and shower if required within 2 hours of applica-
on. However it is important to note that dierent skins pose dierent challenges to ALL 2 hour
soluons. Here’s why.
For these soluons to maximize their tan in the 2 hours they require a set amount of absorpon
into the clients skin. This, though, is dependent on many factors regarding the clients skin and even
their own preparaon. So some, no maer how hard you try, will not achieve the required absorp-
on in that me and will not get the tan they require. Hence, they are far
beer to use another SunFX soluon and leave it on longer. Most 2 hour soluons can be le on
longer for darker results. It is also good to note that the 2 hour Rapid soluons have a reduced or
lighter bronzer than our Standard 5 to 7hr Range. Lighter bronzers in the Rapid allow for the quick
absorpon. Don’t be tempted to spray it darker.
All soluons 5 hours!
Did you know that all the SunFX soluons can be le for just 5 hours to achieve their
maximum aect. Many may sll feel 8 hours or overnight is best. However for most clients their
skin will have achieved a 95% color within that period! ( a lile secret too…if your
client has the right skin then all the soluons can tan them in 2 hours! Amazing fact!
All Skin types: Be Prepared!
If you have worked around tanning salons you would have noced that every client tans dierently
under the lamps. Yet they are using the same lamps as everyone else. Even those in the real sun
achieve dierent colored tans and dierent color intensies. Why? Every skin is dierent. So this
same rule applies to spray tanning or even self tans. Every skin is dierent. Every reacon is dier-
ent. Every result is dierent.
We know that at least 98% of your clients will love their SunFX tan. However for this minor percent-
age, thanks to their genecs and other condions out of our control, there will
always be those whose tan develops lighter, wear faster, comes o too patchy or even goes too
dark! For these don’t give up hope. All is required is to try to ascertain what might work beer for
them. A lile trial and error involved. Work with your client and see just what is best for them. Ex-
plain to them what the parameters are.
Some are perfect the rst me! Others may just require some extra ne tuning!

REMEMBER YOUR AIM IS TO ACHIEVE THE BEST LOOKING TAN, NOT NECESSARILY THE
DARKEST TAN. IN FACT YOUR MAIN AIM FOR MOST PEOPLE IS TO ACHIEVE A NATURAL
LOOKING TAN.

Light Tanned / Olive: use Light or Medium Summer
Olive / Dark Tanned: use Level Medium or Dark Summer or
Showme, Mocha Xpress, Showdown

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF SPRAY TANNING
Studies on DHA have shown that between 1-3% of people may have some sort of a
reacon to the applicaon of DHA on the skin. These reacons are on the most part very mild and
almost not noceable. However some clients with hypo-allergenic skin may
experience a rash. This may or may not be accompanied by some itchiness.
WHAT TO DO
Advise the client to wash the tan o straight away in a shower or bath. The reacons will almost al-
ways cease aer this. Those who have a greater reacon should shower then
apply a basic an-histamine cream. If problems persist they should contact their GP or
Doctor.
NOTE ON CONTRAINDICATIONS
In many cases any contraindicaon could be avoided by ensuring the clients skin type has been
determined and, if necessary, patch tested rst.
Also the desire of the client to be ‘dark’ may lead to the temptaon by the therapist applying the tan
to either spray an excessive coat of tanning soluon on, or choose a soluon level that may not be
suitable to the clients skin type. This may also lead to possible contraindicaons and even cosmec
problems.
If a client is unsure of their skin type we recommend they consult with their GP or Doctor prior to
their spray.
Good training and adhering to basic spray tanning guidelines should ensure an enjoyable
spray tanning experience.

ARE THE SUNFX TANNING SOLUTIONS
SAFE TO USE?
SunFX is always pung the comfort and health of its clients and salons rst. Our own research and
the research from many internaonally respected laboratories over the last 30 years has indicated
that DHA is an relavely safe product and current research shows that it is unlikely DHA can be
absorbed through the skin. Other ingredients found in our SunFX Premium Tanning Soluons are
naturally based.
SHOULD CLIENTS BE PROVIDED WITH ANY FORMS OF
PROTECTION?
Recently aenon has been given to the safety of spray tanning especially in the USA where spray
tanning is enjoyed by millions of clients. For instance, the Food and Drug Administraon (FDA) in
the United States has responded by making certain recommendaons. However, it is important to
note that these are exclusively related to the huge increase in the use of automac spray booths for
spray tanning. It is also important to note that these recommendaons are only for the territories
dened within the United States of America as no other regulatory body elsewhere in the world has
taken this stance. These automac booths oen use a complete saturaon method and rely on the
client to remove excess tanning soluon aer exing the booth. Many of these booths allow the
clients to breathe in the remaining mist unl it is evacuated from the booth. Many early booths sll
in use provided lile or no evacuaon of excess tanning mist. There was some concern from the
FDA that the spray soluons could penetrate and be absorbed into the mucous membranes of the
eye, nose and lips. They have advised clients to ask for suitable eye protecon, nasal plugs and to
wear lip balm when using these booths.
( It is good to note that at this point in me the FDA does not have in it’s possession any test data to
provide any substanaon of these claims indicang that DHA absorpon into the body is unsafe.)
MANUAL APPLICATION VS AUTOMATIC BOOTHS
The applicaon process by a manual applicaon like that used by SunFX does not use a saturaon
method that is used by common automac spray booths. The SunFX method ulizes a careful and
light applicaon instead. Our High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) spray technology holds atomized
parcles within the air stream. This technology substanally reduces overspray, keeping airborne
parcles to a minimum. The extensive training provided to SunFX therapists aids in the most
ecient methods for spray tanning.
However, SunFX recommends having eye protecon (usually thin solarium goggles are ne) nasal
plugs and lip balm on hand in the event a client requests one or all of these.
