INTRODUCTION
The Fireplace models covered in this manual
are Direct-Vent sealed combustion gas fire-
placeheatersdesignedforresidentialapplica-
tion. Direct-Vent appliances operate with the
combustionchambercompletelyisolatedfrom
the indoor environment. All air for combus-
tion is brought in from the outside and ex-
haust gases are vented through the same
direct vent, vent system.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Note: Installation and repair should be per-
formedbyaqualifiedserviceperson.Theappli-
ance should be inspected annually by a quali-
fied professional service technician. More fre-
quent inspections and cleanings may be re-
quired due to excessive lint from carpeting,
bedding material, etc. It is imperative that the
control compartment, burners and circulating
airpassagewaysoftheappliancebekeptclean.

Provideadequateclearancesaroundairopen-

The millivolt appliances are designed to oper-
ateoneithernaturalorpropanegas.Amillivolt
gas control valve with piezo ignition system
provides safe, efficient operation. If any op-
tional accessories which require electrical
powerare being installed, theelectricalpower
must be provided at the time of appliance
installation.
The electronic appliances are designed to op-
erate on either natural or propane gas. An
electronic intermittent pilot system provides
safe, efficient operation. External electrical
power is required to operate these units.

Z21.88-2000(inCanada,CSA-2.33-2000),and

Installation must conform to local codes. In
the absence of local codes, installation must
comply with the current National Fuel Gas

the absence of local codes, installation must
be in accordance with the National Electrical

Test gage connections are provided on the
front of the millivolt gas control valve (identi-
fied OUT for the manifold side and IN for inlet
pressure. A ¹⁄₈" NPT test gage connection is
provided on the electronic gas control valve
adjacent to the outlet to the main burner.
Minimuminletgaspressuretotheseappliances
is5.0 incheswatercolumn(1.24kPa)fornatural
gas and 11 inches water column (2.74 kPa) for
propane for the purpose of input adjustment.
Maximuminletgassupply pressure to theseappli-
ances is 10.5 inches water column (2.61 kPa) for
naturalgasand13.0incheswatercolumn(3.23kPa)
forpropane.
The appliance must be isolated from the gas
supply piping system (by closing its individual
manualshut-offvalve)duringanypressuretest-
ing of the gas supply piping system at test
pressuresequaltoorlessthan¹⁄₂ psig(3.5kPa).
Theapplianceanditsindividualshut-offvalvemust
bedisconnectedfromthegassupplypipingsystem
duringany pressure testing of thatsystem atpres-
suresin excess of¹⁄₂ psig (3.5 kPa).
These appliances must not be connected to a
chimney or flue serving a separate solid fuel
burning appliance.
Any safety guard or screen removed for ser-
vicingthe appliancemust be replaced prior to
operating the appliance.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs of
carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to
thefluwithheadaches,dizziness and/or nau-
sea. If you have these signs, obtain fresh air
immediately. Turn off the gas supply to the
appliance and have it serviced by a qualified
professional, as it may not be operating
correctly.
Operationofmillivoltandelectronicgascon-
trol systems are different. Before lighting
and operating your appliance determine if
you have a millivolt or electronic appliance.
Refer to Figure 1 for access to the gas
control valve. Millivolt appliances will be
fitted with the gas control valve shown in
Figure 2 on page 4 .

.Familiarize yourself with the gas
control valve that your appliance uses.
OPERATION AND CARE OF YOUR
APPLIANCE
Appliance operation may be controlled by the
following means: an optional unit-mounted
ON/OFF control switch (Millivolt appliances
only), an optional wall-mounted ON/OFF con-
trolswitchor an optionalremotecontrol. The
unit-mounted ON/OFF control switch may be
mounted in the bracket below the gas valve
(see Figure 2 on page 4) .
GasControls/ControlCompartmentAccess
Thegascontrolscanbefoundbehindthecontrol
compartmentaccesspanel.Toopenthecontrol
compartment access panel, actuate the spring
loadedmagneticcatchessecuringthepanel,by
gently depressing the outer top corners of the
panel until the catches "pop" the door free,
allowing it to swing out and down to open.
To ease door closure, depress the catches to
place them in their retracted position, then
close the door.
Millivolt appliances are fitted with the gas
control valve shown in
Figure 2 on page 4 .
Onthesesystems,thepiezoignitor,Hi/Loflame
adjustment knob, and pilot and main gas ON/
OFF control knob are located on gas valve.

Millivolt Appliances -
To light millivolt appliances refer to the de-
tailed lighting instructions found on page 12
(English) and page 13 (French). Millivolt ap-
pliance lighting instructions may also be
found on the pull out lighting instruction
labels attached to the gas control valve.
Millivolt appliances may be fitted with an op-
tional ON/OFF rocker switch which is used to
control the main burner operation. The op-
tional ON/OFF rocker switch should be in-
stalledinoneofthetworectangularslotsinthe
piezo igniter mounting bracket below the gas
valve. Once the pilot is lit, the ON/OFF rocker
switchwill controlthe main burner operation.
To operate: Toggle the switch between its ON
and OFF positions.
If your millivolt appliance is equipped with an
optional wall-mounted ON/OFF switch or re-
mote control kit and the pilot is lit, the appli-
ance main burner may be turned on and off
with the wall switch or remote control.

Glass Enclosure Panels - Removal and
Installation.
These are direct-vent appliances. They are de-
signedtooperateonlywiththeglassenclosure
panels properly installed. Generally the glass
enclosure panels should not be removed ex-
cept to gain access to the components within
the firebox, and the appliance may only be
operatedwithoutthefrontglassenclosurepanel
in place for very brief periods of time during
initial appliance checkout and adjustment.
During this appliance checkout and adjust-
ment period, a potential safety hazard exists
-EXERCISEEXTREME CAUTION to preventthe
occurrence of any burn injuries from the ex-
posed flames or hot surfaces. Also note, that
whilethefrontglassenclosurepanel(oranyof
the panels) is removed, the flame appearance
will appear to be smaller than normal.
CAUTION: DO NOT TOUCH THE FRONT
ENCLOSURE GLASS WITH YOUR HANDS
WHILE THE FIREPLACE IS IN USE.
Electronic Appliances -
To light electronic appliances refer to the de-
tailed lighting instructions found in both En-
glish and French on
pages 14 and 15 of these
instructionsrespectively.Electronicappliance
lighting instructions may also be found on the
pull out lighting instruction labels attached to
the gas control valve.
Ifyourelectronicapplianceisequippedwithan
optional remote wall switch or remote control
kittheappliancemainburnermaybeturnedon
and off with the wall switch or remote control.
If your electronic appliance is not equipped
with a wall switch or remote control, the main
burner must be turned off and on with the gas
control switch. Toggle the switch from ON to
OFF to operate the main burner.

Maintenance
The appliance and venting system should be
thoroughly inspected before initial use and at
least annually by a qualified service techni-
cian.However,morefrequentperiodicinspec-
tions and cleanings should be performed by
the homeowner. Homeowner must contact a
qualified service technician at once if any
abnormal condition is observed.
Refer to the maintenance schedule for mainte-
nancetasks,procedures,periodicityandbywhom
theyshouldbeperformed. Alwaysverifyproper
operation of the appliance after servicing.
IMPORTANT: TURN OFF GAS AND ANY
ELECTRICAL POWER BEFORE SERVICING
THE APPLIANCE.
2. When lit for the first time, this appliance will
emitaslightodorfor14hours.Thisisduetothe
“burn-in”ofinternalpaintsandlubricantsusedin
the manufacturing process.
3. Keep lower control compartment clean by
vacuuming or brushing at least twice a year.
Morefrequentcleaningmayberequireddueto
excessivelintfromcarpeting,beddingmateri-
als, etc. It is important that control compart-
ments, burners and circulating air passage-
ways of the appliance be kept clean.
4. Always turn off gas to the pilot (millivolt
appliances) and let the unit cool down before
cleaning. Before re-lighting, refer to the light-
ing instructions in this manual. Lighting in-
structions may also be found on the pull out
lighting instruction labels attached to the
gas control valve.
5. Always keep the appliance area clear and
freefromcombustiblematerials,gasolineand
other flammable liquids.
6. Remember, Millivolt appliances have a con-
tinuous burning pilot flame. Exercise caution
when using products with combustible vapors.
Glass Cleaning
It will be necessary to clean the glass periodi-
cally. Duringstart-upit isnormalfor conden-
sationto form onthe inside ofthe glass. This
can cause lint, dust and other airborne par-
ticles to cling to the glass surface. Also initial
paint curing may deposit a slight film on the
glass. It is therefore recommended that the
glassbecleanedtwoorthreetimeswithanon-
ammoniahouseholdcleanerandwarmwater(a
gas fireplace glass cleaner is recommended).
After that the glass should be cleaned two or
three times during each heating season, de-
pending on the circumstances present.

models may be adjusted through a range be-
tween fixed low and high settings while the
applianceisinoperation.Adjusttheflameheight

the front of the valve (refer to Figure 2) .

build-uponpilotandburnerassembly.Cleanthe
pilotnozzles, ignitor/flame rod and hood with a
soft brush. Ensure the pilot flame engulfs the
flame sensor as shown.
Inspect the vent system at the top and at the
base(withinthe firebox) forsignsofblockage
orobstruction. Look for anysigns of disloca-
tion of the vent components.
Perform the appropriate appliance checkout
procedure detailed in this manual.
Maintenance Schedule

Clean as necessary following the directions
providedinthismanual. DO NOT TOUCH OR
CLEAN GLASS WHILE IT IS HOT.
Inspect the vent system at the top and at the
base (within the firebox) for signs of block-
age or obstruction. Look for any signs of
dislocation of the vent components.
Refer to Figure 6 on page 7 and verify that
theflamepatternandheightdisplayedbythe
appliance conforms to the picture. Flames
must not impinge on the log set.

Refer to Figure 4 and remove the front glass
enclosure panel as follows:
1. Remove the top louver assembly or radiant
panel.
2.Openthecontrolcompartmentaccesspanel.
Toopenthecontrolcompartmentaccesspanel,
actuate the spring-loaded magnetic catches
securing the panel, by gently depressing the
outertopcornersofthepaneluntilthecatches
"pop"thedoorfree,allowingittoswingoutand
down to open.
3. Locate the two (2) latches at the top of the
control compartment. To disengage the two
latchesfromthebottomvee-flangeoftheglass
enclosurepanel,reach for thehandleslocated
towards the back of the latches and pull the
handles down toward the front of the unit.
4. Swingthe bottom ofthe door outand raise
itslightlytoliftthetopflangeofthedoorframe
away from the appliance.
To install the front glass enclosure panel,
proceed as follows:
1. Visuallyinspect the gasketon the backside
ofthepanel.Thegasketsurfacemustbeclean,
free of irregularities and seated firmly.
2.Positiontheglassenclosurepanelinfrontof
the firebox opening at a 45 degree angle and
engage the top flange over the lip at the top of
the firebox opening.
3. Swingthe glass enclosurepanel down and
back. Ensure the gasket seats evenly as the
paneldrawsshut. EngagetheVee-flangeatthe
bottomof the panel with thelatches and close
the latches to secure the panel.
4. Reinstallthetoplouverassemblyorradiant
panel.
Burner Adjustments
The following paragraphs address burner ad-
justment concerns and procedures.
Flame Appearance and Sooting
Proper flame appearance is a matter of taste.
Generallymostpeoplepreferthewarmglowof
a yellow to orange flame. Appliances operated
withairshutteropeningsthataretoolargewill
exhibit flames that are blue and transparent.
These weak, blue and transparent flames are
termedanemic.Iftheairshutteropeningistoo
small sooting may develop.Sooting is indi-
cated by black puffs developing at the tips of
very long orange flames. Sooting results in
black deposits forming on the logs, appliance
inside surfaces and on exterior surfaces adja-
cent to the vent termination.
Sootingiscausedbyincompletecombustionin
theflamesandalackofcombustionairentering
the air shutter opening. To achieve a warm
yellowtoorangeflamewithanorangebodythat
does not soot, the shutter opening must be
adjustedbetweenthesetwoextremes. Nosmoke
orsootshouldbepresent.Repositionthelogset
if the flames impinge on any part of it.
If the log set is properly positioned and
sootingconditionsexist, the air shutteropen-
ing on the main burner tube should be ad-
justed. Normally, the more offsets in the vent
system,thegreatertheneedfortheairshutter
to be opened further.
ENSURE THAT ALL GLASS PANELS ARE IN
PLACE AND SEALED DURING ADJUSTMENT.
The adjustment rod and associated adjustable
air shutter is patented technology. Flame ad-
justments can be made quickly and accurately
to taste without the need of disassembling the
applianceandwaitingfor15minutesaftereach
adjustment.
Propane models may exhibit a flame pattern
that may candle or appear stringy. If this is
problematic or persists as the appliance is
continually operated, adjust the air shutter
closedasdescribedinthepreviousparagraphs.
Operatetheapplianceforaperiodoftimeasthe
effect diminishes, ensuring that the appliance
does not develop sooty flames.
Whensatisfiedthattheapplianceoperatesprop-
erly,proceedtofinishtheinstallation.Leavethe
control knob in “ON” position and turn the
remote switch “OFF.” Close the lower control
compartment access panel.
Adjustment
CAUTION: THE ADJUSTMENT ROD AND
NEARBY APPLIANCE SURFACES ARE HOT.
EXERCISECAUTION TOAVOIDINJURYWHILE
ADJUSTING FLAME APPEARANCE.
To adjust the flame, rotate the adjustment
rod (located in the lower control area) coun-
terclockwise to increase or clockwise to re-
duce the air shutter opening. Adjust the air
shutter to the recommended setting as
shown in
Figure 5 .Allow the burner to oper-
ateforatleast15minutes. Observetheflame
continuously. If it appears weak or sooty as
previously described, adjust the air shutter
byrotating theadjustmentroduntiltheflame
appearance is as desired.

Thepilotflameshould besteady,notlifting or
floating. Flame should be blue in color with
traces of orange at the outer edge. The top ³⁄₈"
(10mm) at the pilot generator (thermopile) and
thetop¹⁄₈"min(tip)ofthequickdropoutthermo-
coupleshouldbeengulfedinthepilotflame. The
flame should project 1" (25 mm) beyond the
hood at all three ports. See
Figure 9.

Install the unitized log set:
a- The bottom of the log set is notched to
accommodate the pilot.
b- Place the log set so that the four inner
notchesontheundersideofthelogsetfitover
thefourriserslocatedontheburnerends. See
Figure 6 .This procedure isaccomplishedpri-
marilybyfeel,asthelog set maskstheburner
risers as it is being installed.
c- As a final check for correct log set place-
ment,checkthatthefourouternotchesonthe
underside of the log set fit over the burner
tines as indicated in
Figure 6 .
The log set, the decorative volcanic stone
and the glowing embers (rockwool) are lo-
cated inside the unit. Refer to the following
informationand
Figures 6 and 7 fordetailed
placementinstructionsforthelogs,thedeco-
rative volcanic stone and the glowing em-
bers. Figure 6 also shows a typical flame
pattern for this particular appliance.
Install the decorative volcanic stone and
glowing embers (rockwool):
Spread the decorative volcanic stone onthe
simulatedbrickfloorofthefireboxaroundthe
burners to simulate ashes. Maintain a ¹⁄₂ in.
gapbetweenthebottomofthehorizontalgrate
section and the top of the pile of decorative
volcanicstone. Placeafewdime-sizedpieces
of the glowing ember material on the pan
burner in front of the burned out area on both
sides of the log set. The glowing embers may
touch one another, but should not overlap
each other.

The Model RCL (Standard) Remote Control
System, features a simplistic on/off control
functionfor thefireplace. This modelincludes

can be wall or hearth mounted.
Thetransmitter has ONand OFF functionsthat
are activated by pressing either button on the

Deluxe Remote Control System
(Model RCK-D)
The Model RCL-T (Deluxe) Remote Control
System has all of the features of the standard
system along with an added easy to read LCD
screen which presents access to many en-
hancements, including; battery power level in-
dicator,timer,modeofoperation,thermostatic
display including room temperature in either
metric of English units, flame indicator and
clock. Fully programmable, the Model RCL-T
allows for virtual command over nearly all
operational and temperature variables, using
the hand held remote control transmitter.

standard system, may be operated with elec-

A. This appliance has a pilot which must be lighted with a piezo
ignitor. When lighting the pilot, follow these instructions
exactly.
B. BEFORE OPERATING smell all around the appliance area for
gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because some gas is
heavier than air and will settle on the floor.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
•Extinguish any open flame.
•Open windows.
•Do not light any appliance.
•Do not touch any electrical switches.
TO TURN OFF GAS TO APPLIANCE
1. Turn remote wall switch “OFF.” The pilot will remain lit for
normal service.
2. For complete shutdown, turn remote wall switch to “OFF.”
3. Access the lower control compartment.
4. Depress gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise
to “OFF.” Do not force.
5. Close lower control compartment.
LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS

2. Access the lower control compartment.
3. Turn remote wall switch to “OFF.”
4. Verify main line shut-off valve is open.
5. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise
to “OFF.”
6. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. If you then smell gas,
STOP! Follow “B” in the safety information above on this page. If you
do not smell gas, go to the next step.
7. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn counterclockwise
to “PILOT.”
8. Push in control knob all the way and hold in. Immediately light the
pilot by triggering the spark ignitor (pushing the button) until pilot
lights. Continue to hold the control knob in for about 1 ¹⁄₂ minutes
after the pilot is lit. Release knob and it will pop back up. Pilot should
remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps 5 through 8.
•If knob does not pop up when released, stop
and immediately call your service
technician or gas supplier.
•If pilot will not stay lit after several
tries, turn the control knob to “OFF”
and call your service technician or
gas supplier.
9. Turn gas control knob counterclockwise
to “ON.”
10. Close lower control compartment.
•Do not use any phone in your building.
•Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone.
•If your gas supplier cannot be reached, call the fire depart-
ment.
C. Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control knob.
Never use tools. If the knob will not push in or turn by hand,
do not try to repair it, call a qualified service technician. Force
or attempted repair may result in a fire or an explosion.
D. Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water.
Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the
appliance and to replace any part of the control system and
any gas control which has been under water.
Note: Knob cannot be turned from “PILOT” to “OFF”
unless the knob is pushed in slightly. Do not force.

A. Cet appareil est muni d’une veilleuse qui doit être allumée avec un
allumeur piézo-électrique. Lorsque vous allumez la veilleuse, suivre

1. Tournez l’interrupteur mural à la position d’arrêt “OFF”. La veilleuse
restera allumée jusqu’au retour du service normal.
2. Pour une fermeture complète, tournez l’interrupteur mural à la
position d’arrêt “OFF”.
3. Ouvrez le compartiment de contrôle du bas.
POUR FERMER LE GAZ QUI ALIMENTE L’APPAREIL
4. Enfoncez légèrement le bouton de réglage du gaz et tournez-le dans
le sens des aiguilles d’une montre jusqu’à la position
d’arrêt “OFF”. Ne forcez pas le bouton.
5. Fermez le compartiment de contrôle du bas.
8. Enfoncez le bouton de réglage jusqu’au fond et gardez-le enfoncé.
Allumez immédiatement la veilleuse en déclenchant l’allume-gaz à
étincelle (en poussant le bouton) jusqu’à ce que la veilleuse
s’enflamme. Continuez de tenir le bouton de réglage enfoncé
pendant environ 90 secondes après l’allumage de la veilleuse.
Relâchez le bouton et il sortira subitement. La veilleuse devrait
rester allumée. Si elle s’éteint, répétez les étapes 5 à 8
inclusivement.
•Si le bouton ne sort pas automatiquement après avoir été relâché,
arrêtez immédiatement et téléphonez
à votre technicien de service ou à
votre fournisseur de gaz.
•Si la veilleuse refuse de rester
allumée après plusieurs tentatives,
tournez le bouton de réglage jusqu’à
sa position d’arrêt “OFF” et
téléphonez à votre technicien de
service ou à votre fournisseur de gaz.
9. Tournez le bouton de réglage du gaz en sens inverse des aiguilles
d’une montre jusqu’à sa position de marche “ON”.
10. Fermez le compartiment de contrôle du bas.
11. Au besoin, rebrancher l’appareil au courant électrique et remettre
l’interrupteur du brûleur principal à la position “ON” ou régler le
thermostat à la température désirée.
12. Si l’appareil ne fonctionne pas, suivre les instructions intitulées
“Pour fermer le gaz qui alimente l’appareil” et appeler un
technicien ou le fournisseur de gaz.
Remarque: Il est impossible de tourner le bouton de “PILOT” à “OFF” à
moins qu’il ne soit légèrement enfoncé. Ne le forcez pas.
6. Attendez cinq (5) minutes pour l’evacuation du gaz. Si vous décelez
une odeur de gaz, ARRÊTEZ ! Retournez au point “B” des consignes
de sécurité au verso de cette plaque. Si vous ne remarquez aucune
odeur de gaz, passez à l’étape suivante.
7. Enfoncez légèrement le bouton de réglage du gaz et tournez-le en
sens inverse des aiguilles d’une montre jusqu’à la position de
veilleuse “PILOT”.
1. ARRÊTEZ! Lisez les consignes de sécurité au verso de cette plaque.
2. Ouvrez le compartiment de contrôle du bas.
3. Tournez l’interrupteur mural à la position d’arrêt “OFF”.
4. Assurez-vous que la soupape d’arrêt de la canalisation principale est
ouverte.
5. Enfoncez légèrement le bouton de réglage du gaz et tournez-le dans
le sens des aiguilles d’une montre jusqu’à la position
d’arrêt “OFF”.

TROUBLESHOOTING THE MILLIVOLT GAS CONTROL SYSTEM
1. Spark ignitor will not light
pilot after repeated
triggering of ignitor button.
2. Pilot will not stay lit after
carefully following the
lighting instructions.

Check for spark at electrode and pilot; if no spark and
electrode wire is properly connected, replace ignitor.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
N ote: Before troubleshooting, make sure that the appliance main line gas shut-off valve and the gas control valve are in the "OPEN"
position and the burner ON/OFF switch is in the “ON” position.
Important: Valve system troubleshooting should only be accomplished by a qualified service technician.
Clean and/or adjust pilot flame for maximum flame impinge-
ment on thermocouple
(Figure 9 on page 7) .
Check burner orifice for stoppage and remove.
Checkthermopilewithmillivoltmeter.Takereadingatthermo-
pile terminals of gas valve. Should read 325 millivolts mini-
mum with optional wall switch “OFF.” Replace faulty thermo-
pile if reading is below specified minimum.
Check wall switch and wires for proper connections. Jumper
wire across terminals at wall switch, if burner comes on,
replacedefectivewallswitch.Ifokay,jumperwiresacrosswall
switch wires at valve, if burner comes on, wires are faulty or
connections are bad.
Check pilot flame, it must impinge on thermocouple
(Figure
9 on page 7)
Clean and/or adjust pilot for maximum flame
impingement on thermocouple. Ensure that the connection
between the valve and thermocouple are tight and secure.
Clean or replace pilot orifice.
Check inlet gas pressure. It should be within the limits as
marked on the rating plate.
Using a match, light pilot. If pilot lights, turn off pilot and
triggertheignitorbuttonagain.Ifpilotlights,animpropergas
mixture caused the bad lighting and a longer purge period is
recommended. If pilot will not light – check gap at electrode
and pilot – should be ¹⁄₈" to have a strong spark. If gap
measures ¹⁄₈", replace pilot
(Figure 9 on page 7) .

Disconnect the two black wires from the wire nuts. Test switch(s) for
continuity with a multimeter. If continuity is not indicated, switch(s) is
defective and must be replaced.
Note: Before replacing “OFF/ON” switch, be sure to check wiring for loose
connections or broken wires and repair as needed.
Check main burner orifice(s) for stoppage. Clean or replace.
Check vent system for obstructions.
A. Faulty Valve System.
B. “OFF/ON” or wall switch
