This instaliation manual will help you obtain a
safe, etricient, dependabieinstaliation for your
gas firepiace insert. Please read and under-
standthese installation instructions beforebe-
ginning your instailation.
Before beginning the actual installation, your
Superior Factory-Built fireplace system must
be modified in order to accept Superior's gas
insert. The degree of modification
will depend
on which Superior Factory-Buiit fireplace will
be used.
DOnotanemptto modify oralterthe construc-
tion of the gas insert or any of itscomponents.
Any modification of the insert may void the
warranty,certifications orapprovaisof thesys-
tem.
Masonryfireplaces generaily do nothaveto be
modified,
however;speciaiconsiderationsmust
be understood.
This documentcoverssix(6) modelsof thegas
insert Instructionsare providedfor ail models
and, therefore, certain details may not be re-
quired for your insert application.
"N'land "P modeisarethe standard configura-
tion. "NB" and
"PB" modeis come with the
(318-1600 optional blower kit installed "NX"
and "PX models include the GIB-1600 aiong
with decorative brick side panels, aiuminum
brass-tone louvers and vermiculite.
The manufacture and shipping ol these appli-
ances involve components which may cause
annoying, but harmless odors during initiai
operation. Provideextraventilation tothe room
for the initial
2-3 hour break inperiod.
In United States
These appliances comply with American Na-
tional Safety Standards and are tested and
listed by IAS Services to AGAIANSI 221.44-
1994 as a"Direct-Vent Wall Heater."
Installationmustconformto iocalcodes. Inthe
absence of local codes installation must con-
form w~tht'e current hzton21 Fuel Gas Code,
ANS 27231Theseappl ances,when insta lec,
must be electrically grounded in accordance
with local codes, and withthe National Electri-

Standards of Canada and are certified by IAS
Selvices to CANICGAQ.19 as a "Direct-Vent
Wall Heater."

The heater and its individual shut-off valve
must be disconnected from the gas supply
piping system during any pressure testing of
that system at test pressures in excess of

psig (3.5 kPa).

The GI-3821 Gas lnsens are ceitified as "Di-
rectYent Wall Heaters." They have been de-
signed to be installed into selected Superior
solid fuel burning factory-built fireplace sys-
tems that have been moditied, other solid fuel
burningfactow-builtfirepiacesandcertainsolid
fuel burning masonry fireplace sys:ems
(Fig-
ures 7.2and3). These gas inserts are heat-
circulating systems that utilize a millivolt gas
control and a pier0 ignition system. The gas
controlvaivedoesnotrequireanexternal power
source to operate but a
IIOV, 60Hz power
source is required lorthe optional blower fan
system tofunction.
Carefully read and understand these instruc-
tions completely prior to instailing the gas
insert into either a Superior factory-built fire-
place or any defined masonry fireplace.

Clothing or other flammable materials should
not be placed on or near the insert.
Any fireplace in which this insert has been
installedmust be vented to the outsideatmo-
sphere. Do not connect this appliance to a
chimneyflueservingaseparatesolidfuelburn-
ingappliance.
Any grill, or glass panel removed for the pur-
pose of servicing the insert must be repiaced
priorto operaling the insert.
Masonry fireplaces whose front opening di-
mensions tall within defined measurements
will acceptthis gas insert.
INSTALLATIONOPTIONS
TheGl-3821canbe installedinavarietyofways
in virtually any fireplace previously used for
burning solid fuels. The requirements of the
existingfireplace are listedonthe fronlpage of
this manual.This appliancecan
be installedin
the Superiorfireplaceslistedon the frontpage
in column two, in solid fuel burning masonry
fireplaces meeting the dimensional require-
ments listed in column iW0, or in any other
factory-built fireplaceconformingto the terms
of its listing that meets the minimal dirnen-
sional requirementslistedincolumn huo.
The 61-3821 is designed to be installed in
almostany approvedchimneysystem.Figures
1.2and3show thethreetypes of installations
to be usedwiththe gas insert.Beforeinstalling
Ihe insert using any type of installation, the
existing chimney exhaust flue must be thor-
oughly cleaned andcompletely inspecled by
a qualified chimney sweep or fireplace ser-

Factory-Built Fireplace lnstallation
Dvewiew
Figure 1 shows the gas insert installed in a
typicalfactory-built fireplace.The insert is po-
sitioned within the firebox.
A singie 4'
(102mm) flexible duct runs from the insert
completelythroughtheexisting chimneytothe
termination installed atop a ilashing that is
securedand compietely sealed to the chimney
top. This
4' (102 mm) flex duct conducts ex-
haust products out of the gas insert. Freshair
for combustion enters the termination at the
top, is drawn downwardthrough the existing
chimney's inner flue (previously used as the
exhaust) and into the gas insert via the

(152 mm)flex ductingthat connects the dome
adapterto the vent adapter. The dome adapter
mustbesecurely

to the fireplace dome ceiing~

fireplace's blade damper assembiy cannot

completely removed, preventing the dome
adapter from being installed directly to the
bottom of the flue liner.
In this type of installation, the gas insert is
positioned within the fireplace and a pair of
flexible ducts run from the insert completely
throughtheexistingchimneytothetermination
installed atop a flashing that is secured and
completely sealed to the chimneytop The 3'
(76 mm) diameter fiex duct conductsexhaust
productsoutof the gas inserithroughthevent
adapter. Fresh air for combustion enters the
terminationat the top and is drawn downward
throughthe
T(51 mm) diameterfiex duct and
into the gas insert through the vent adapter.

Figure
3 shows the gas insert installedusing
the optionalmasonryinstallation.Thisinstalla-
tion can oniy be used if the masonry fireplace
hasnodamperorifitsdamperassemblycan be
completely removed. In this installation, the
dome adapter must be fined directly to the
bottom of the flue liner with a complete seal.
Thisinstallation iscompletedinthe same man-
ner as the factory-built fireplace installation
usingthe same vent c0mponen:s.
In this type of installation, the insert is posi-
tionedwithin the firebox.Asingle

FACTORY-BUILT FIREPLACE
PREPARATION
IMPORTANT: BEFORE STARTING THIS IN-
STALLATION. MAKE SURE THAT ACAS LINE
ISEITHER INSTALLEDORCANBEINSTALLED ~ ~
TO THE FIREPLACE. THISSHOULD ONLY BE
PERFORMED aY A RUALIFIEO, LICENSED
PLUMBER.
In order for the selectedSuperior fireplace to
accept the Superior gas insert, the following
steps must first be carried out:

models).

ingbycutting2'from thefrontlintel(all models
except RDMCMCE-A's).
Modilication Procedures
Step 1. RemovingtheFuelGrateand/or other
Gas Appliances Attached to Gas Line -On
mostmodelsthetuei grate restsonthe bottom
refractoryand can bekasilyremoved. On other
modeisthefuelgrateisheldinplaceby tworear
gratelegbrackets.Thesebracketscanbeeither
cut or piied off the grate legs
Remove any gas component that might be
attachedtothegas line,sucha aioglighteror
$
a set of gas logs. Be sure to a ach a gas cap
fitting to the open end of the gas line after the
component has been removed. This is to
as-
surethatnodirt or otherdebriswill get intothe
gas line before connecting to the gas insert.
Step
2. Removing Screens and Rods - Re-
movingiwo (2) screwsfrombehindthe upper
center of the fireplace tront frame aiiows the
screens and screen rods to be removedfrom
the fireplace.

3. Removing the Damper ksembly -
The damper blade,damper handleand linkage
can be removedby removingthree(3)'Adnuts
from the three (3) botts holding the damper
blade, handleand linkagefromthebracketthat
Ismountedontheinnertransition. Thisapplies
to alimodelsexceptthe RDIHCMCE-Amodels.
For RD-A. HC-A, and HCE-A models remove
fOur(4)%e'nutSfromthe boltsthataremounted
totheinnertransitiontoallowtheentiredzmper
andlintelassemblytobe removedinone piece.

Step 4. Removingthe Side and Rear Relrac-
tories-There are sideand rear refractorieson
most Superior lireplaces model. For
43' and
largersystems,the removalof the rear refrac-
tory isailthat is necessary. Bothside and rear
refractoriesmust be removed lor all
38' tire-
piacesystems.First,removethesiderefractory
retainers, located at the top, middle of the
panels. Remove one panel at a time, starting
withthe side refractories. On some oldermod-
els there are metal side panels. PsmiveThese
metalpanelsflrst,thecthe rearrefractorypanel.
Step
5. Removing Front Metal Ash Lip -On
mostunitsthere isasmall metaiash lipthat is
securedtothefrontframe Removethescrews
inthe lowerfrontfrsmethen

removed. Reinstallthe tront screws.
Step6. CutandRemoveLintelErtension-On
all models except the RDMCMCE-A systems.

INSTALLING THE GAS INSERT
The 61-3821 insert must he vented directlyto
the outslde through its own tlexible ducting
system;dual (sideby side) 4'(102 mm)tubes
primarilyconfiguredfor usewith masonryfire-
piaces and a concentric 4' (1 02 mm) and 6'
(152 mm)diameter doublewalledventsystem
primarilyused inexistingdoublewalled chim-
neys. Neithersystemmay sewicemultipleap-
pliances,and mustneverbeconnectedtoaflue
sewinga solid fuel burningappliance.
The applianceisdesigned,testedand listedfor
operation with, and only with, Superior Fire-
place vent components. DO

Vertical Termination Systems (Roof)
Tine Figures 4 and 5 illustratethe various ver-
tical venling configurationsthat are possible
for use with Superior'sGas Insert. The maxi-
mum vertical heightforthe61-3821 system is
40' [12.2m)abovethebottomoftheappliance.
By no means should the venting be less than
12'
(3.7 m)fronthebottomoftheapplianceto
the point on the cap where the exhaust gas
exists. Both of these vertical vent systems
terminatethroughthe roof.The minimumvent
heightabove the roofand/or adjacentwalls is
specified by majorbuildingcodes.Alwayscon-
suityour localcodesfor specific requirements.

sheet metal components, check glass for

Make sure the gas insert is compatible with
your gas type.

8. Ifpossibleremovethedamperassem-
biy. Block open damDer that can not be re-
moved. The damper in some masonry fire-
places may require cutting away to provide
adequateclearancefortheflexducting. Damper
assemblies used in masonry installationsare
usuailymadeof castalloy metal. This material
is [eiatively easy to break. To remove the ob-
structing portionof a damper blade, clamp on
to the area to be removed and apply a shear
force to breakthe area away.

9. Modify Firebox Exhaust Area - For

Figure 37. Engagethe top of each brick panel
withthe positioningciips.Thetopof each panel

finished look to masonry installations. The
masonry surround kits are easy to assemble
and instaii. Refer to the following paragraphs
for detailed instailationinstructions.
Beforebeginningtheassembiyand installation
of the masonry surround kits, the gas insert
shouid be in position with the flue and gas
connectionscompleted.
There are eight (8) screws provided with the
gas insert, ModelGl-3821,which will be used
to attachthe surround tothe insert.
Assembling Surround
Step1.Attachthetopassernblytotherightside
assembly using two (2) ol the #lo-24 x 3h'
screws and #lo-24 nuts provided. Attach the
left side assembly Inthe same manner. Place
the surround face down on a flat surface and
tighten ail screws securely. (Figure38)

Step 2. Siide the miter ciamps and backing
platesdown into the top of the horizontaltrim
pieces. Slide the vertical trim piece onto the
exposedend ofeach miterc1amp.Alignthetrim
pieces so that the miteredcorners are square.
Tighten the screws on the miter ciamps to
secure the trim pieces together.

(8) predrilled holes,four (4) perside attopand
bottom, to accept the surround. Using the
screwsprovidedwiththeGas Insert, securethe

42). For aiignment purposes, do not tighten
screws all the way.

Remove the front glass door frame from the
appliance. Open the lower controi compart-
ment door.

2. Carefully remove the top twigs, then
removethe main logs. Exercisecareas notto
break logs. Gather, remove and retain any
ember material on the floor of the appliance.

gasket be inspected at the beginning of the

preventing combustioil gases from escaping
into the room. Replace the glass enclosure
panel gasketif necessae with material identi-
fied inthe ReplacementParts List on page
22.

When lighting the pilot, follow these instructions exactly.

gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because some gas is
