1. Do not use this firebox as a wood burning
fireplace. Use only decorative unvented
room heaters (log sets).
2. Donotaddextralogsorornamentssuchas
pinecones,vermiculiteorrockwool.Using
these added items can cause sooting.
3. Use only the provided hood. See Parts,
Page 18. The firebox canopy (hood)
must not be modified or replaced with a
canopy (hood) that may be provided with
the unvented decorative room heater.
4. Vent-freegaslogheatersinstalledinthese
fireboxes require fresh air ventilation to
run properly. See Air for Combustion and
Ventilation, Page 8.
5. Do not run vent-free heaters installed in
these fireboxes
• where flammable liquids or vapors are
used or stored
• under dusty conditions
6. Do not use this firebox to cook food or
burn paper or other objects.
7. Turn unit off and let cool before servicing.
Only a qualified service person should
service and repair firebox.
8. Operating vent-free heaters installed in
thesefireboxes above elevationsof4,500
feet could cause pilot outage.
9. Do not use the firebox if it has been
under water.
10. Beforeusingfurniture polish, wax, carpet
cleaner or similar products, turn heater
off.If heated, the vapors from these prod-
ucts may create a white powder residue
within burner box or on adjacent walls
and furniture.
11. Provide adequate clearances around air
openings.
Do not place clothing or other
flammable material on or near
the appliance. Never place any
objectsinthefireboxoronlogs.
Keepthefireplaceareaclearand
freefromcombustiblematerials,
gasoline, and other flammable
vapors and liquids.
Children and adults should be
alerted to the hazard of high
surfacetemperatureandshould
stay away to avoid burns or
clothing ignition.
Firebox front and screen be-
comes very hot when running
firebox.Keepchildrenandadults
awayfromhotsurfacestoavoid
burns or clothing ignition. Fire-
box will remain hot for a time
after shutdown. Allow surfaces
to cool before touching.
You must operate this fireplace
with the provided fireplace
screen and hood in place. Make
sure these parts are in place
and screens are closed before
runninginstalledgaslogheater.

OPERATION
Thisfirebox isdesignedforuse withapproved
ANSIZ21.11.2decorativetypeunventedroom
heaters.(Physical sizelimitationsapply. Refer
to minimum firebox requirements supplied
with log heater.) It requires no outside vent-
ing or chimney making installation easy and
inexpensive.
LOCAL CODES
LOCATING FIREBOX
PLANNING
Planwhere you willinstallthe firebox.This will
save time and money later when you install
the firebox. Before installation, consider the
following:
1. Where firebox will be located. Allow for
wall and ceiling clearances (see Installa-
tion Clearances, Page 11).
2. Everything needed to complete installation.
3. These models CANNOT be installed in
a bedroom unless maximum Btu rating
of installed vent-free log set is less than
10,000 Btu/hr.
4. Proper air for combustion and ventilation
(Page 8).
Install and use firebox with care. Follow all
local codes. In the absence of local codes,
use the latest edition of The National Fuel
Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54*; National
Fuel Gas Code (latest edition). Firebox must
be electrically grounded in accordance with
the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70
(latest edition).

COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHU-
SETTS REQUIREMENTS
Theseappliances areapprovedfor installa-
tion in the US state of Massachusetts if the
following additional requirements are met:
• Un-vented Room Heaters shall be in-
stalled in accordance with 527 CMR 30.
• Installation and repair must be done by
a plumber or gas fitter licensed in the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• Theflexiblegas line connectorusedshall
not exceed 36 inches (92 centimeters)
in length.
• The individual manual shut-off must be
a T-handle type valve.
• Unvented appliances may NOT be in-
stalled in bedrooms or bathrooms.
• A working smoke detector must be
installed in the area where vent-free ap-
pliances are installed.
Seller of unvented propane or natural
gas-fired supplemental room heaters shall
provide to each purchaser a copy of 527
CMR 30 upon sale of the unit.

AIR FOR COMBUSTION AND VENTILATION
Unusually tight construction is defined as
construction where:
a. walls and ceilings exposed to the outside
atmosphere have a continuous water
vapor retarder with a rating of one perm
(6 x 10
-11
kg per pa-sec-m
2
) or less with
openings gasketed or sealed and
b. weather stripping has been added on
openable windows and doors and
c. caulking or sealants are applied to areas
such as joints around window and door
frames, between sole plates and floors,
between wall-ceiling joints, between
wall panels, at penetrations for plumb-
ing, electrical and gas lines and at other
openings.
If your home meets all of the three criteria
above, you must provide additional fresh air.
See Ventilation Air From Outdoors, Page 10.
If your home does not meet all of the three
criteriaabove, proceedto Determining Fresh-
Air Flow For Firebox Location.
Confined and Unconfined Space
The National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/
NFPA54 allows two methods for determining
whether the space in which the heater is being
installed is confined or unconfined space. The
standard method defines a confined space as a
space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet
per1,000Btu per hour (4.8m
3
perkw) of the ag-
gregate input rating of all appliances installed in
that space and an unconfined space as a space
whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per
1,000 Btu per hour (4.8 m
3
per kw) of the ag-
gregate input rating of all appliances installed in
that space. Rooms communicating directly with
thespace in which theappliancesare installed*,
through openings not furnished with doors, are
considered a part of the unconfined space.
Where the air infiltration rate of a structure is
known, the Known Air Infiltration Rate Method
may be used. Follow The National Fuel Gas
Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54 to use this
method to determine if the space is confined
or unconfined.
* Adjoining rooms are communicating only if
there are doorless passageways or ventilation
grills between them.
DETERMINING FRESH-AIR FLOW FOR
HEATER LOCATION
Determining if You Have a Confined or
Unconfined Space Using the Standard
Method
Today’s homes are built more energy efficient
than ever. New materials, increased insulation
andnewconstruction methods helpreduceheat
lossinhomes. Homeowners apply weather strip
and caulk around windows and doors to keep
thecoldairout and the warm air in. During heat-
ing months, homeowners want their homes as
airtight as possible.
While it is good to make your home energy
efficient, your home needs to breathe. Fresh
air must enter your home. All fuel-burning ap-
pliances need fresh air for proper combustion
and ventilation.
Exhaust fans, some fireplaces, clothes dryers
and some fuel-burning appliances draw air from
thehousetooperate.Youmustprovideadequate
fresh air for these appliances. This will ensure
properventingofventedfuel-burningappliances.
PROVIDING ADEQUATE VENTILATION
The following are excerpts from National Fuel
Gas Code,ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54,Air for Com-
bustion and Ventilation.
All spaces in homes fall into one of the three
following ventilation classifications:
1. Unusually Tight Construction
2. Unconfined Space
3. Confined Space
The information on Pages 8 through 10 will help
you classify your space and provide adequate
ventilation.
Unusually Tight Construction
The air that leaks around doors and windows
mayprovideenoughfresh airfor combustionand
ventilation. However, in buildings of unusually
tight construction, you must provide additional
fresh air.

combustion air is provided by the
method described in the National

Use this work sheet to determine if you have a
confined or unconfined space.
Space:Includes theroom inwhich youwill install
heater plus any adjoining rooms with doorless

width x height).

The space in the example is a confined space
because the actual Btu/Hr used is more than the
maximum Btu/Hr the space can support. You must
provide additional fresh air. Your options are as
follows:
A. Rework worksheet, adding the space of an
adjoining room. If the extra space provides an
unconfined space, remove door to adjoining
room or add ventilation grills between rooms.
See Ventilation Air From Inside Building.
B. Vent roomdirectly tothe outdoors. SeeVentila-
tion Air From Outdoors, Page 10.
C. Install a lower Btu/Hr fireplace, if lower Btu/Hr
size makes room unconfined.
If the actual Btu/Hr used is less than the maxi-
mumBtu/Hrthe space can support, the spaceis
anunconfinedspace.Youwillneed noadditional
fresh air ventilation.

VENTILATION AIR
Ventilation Air From Inside Building
This fresh air would come from an adjoining
unconfined space. When ventilating to an
adjoining unconfined space, you must provide
two permanent openings: one within 12" of the
ceilingandone within 12" of the floor onthewall
connecting the two spaces (see options 1 and
2, Figure 4). You can also remove door into ad-
joining room (see option 3, Figure 4). Follow the
NationalFuelGasCode, ANSIZ223.1/NFPA 54,
Air for Combustion and Ventilation for required
size of ventilation grills or ducts.

Provide extra fresh air by using ventilation
grills or ducts. You must provide two perma-
nent openings: one within 12" of the ceiling
andonewithin12"ofthe floor. Connect these
items directly to the outdoors or spaces open
to the outdoors. These spaces include attics
and crawl spaces. Follow the National Fuel
Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, Air for
Combustion and Ventilation for required size
of ventilation grills or ducts.
IMPORTANT:Do not provide openings
for inlet or outlet air into attic if attic has a
thermostat-controlled power vent. Heated air
entering the attic will activate the power vent.

CAUTION: Log heaters in-
stalled in this firebox create

move heat to wall surfaces next
to firebox. Installing firebox next
tovinylorclothwallcoveringsor
operating firebox where impuri-
ties(suchas,butnotlimitedto,to-
bacco smoke, aromatic candles,
cleaning fluids, oil or kerosene
lamps, etc.) in the air exist, may
discolor walls or cause odors.
IMPORTANT: Vent-free gas log heaters add
moisture to the air.Although this is beneficial,
installing firebox in rooms without enough
ventilationairmaycausemildewtoform from
too much moisture. See, Page 8.
IMPORTANT:Make sure the firebox is level.
If firebox is not level, log set will not work
properly.
NOTE: Your firebox is designed to be used in
zero clearance installations. Wall or framing
material can be placed against any exterior
surface on the rear, sides, top or bottom of
your firebox, except where standoff spacers
areintegrally attached. Ifstandoffspacers are
attached to your firebox, these spacers can
beplaceddirectlyagainstwallorframing ma-
terials. Use the dimensions shown for rough
opening to create the easiest installation.

NOTICE: The firebox identifica-
tionlabel(includingmodelnum-
ber, serial number, clearances,
etc.) is located on a chain under
the bottom refractory.

INSTALLATION CLEARANCES
Carefully follow the instructions below. This
will ensure safe installation.
Minimum Wall and Ceiling Clearances
(see Figure 6)
A. Clearances from the side of the fireplace
cabinet to any combustible material and
wall should follow diagram in Figure 6.
Example:Thefaceofamantel,bookshelf,
etc. is made of combustible material and
protrudes 3-1/2" from the wall. This com-
bustiblematerialmustbe4"fromthe side
of the fireplace cabinet (see Figure 4).
B. Clearances from the top of the firebox
opening to the ceiling should not be less
than 42".
C. Whenfireboxis installed oncarpeting,tile
(vinyl)or othercombustiblematerial, other
than wood flooring, the firebox should
be installed on a metal or wood panel
extending the full width and depth of the
enclosure.
D. Clearances from the bottom of firebox to
the floor is 0".
These fireboxes can be installed as free-
standing units against a wall with approved
cabinet mantels that may be available from
your retailer or supplier, or as a built-in unit.
Theclearancesarethe same for either instal-
lation method.
CAUTION: Do not allow the
vent-free gas log appliance to
touch or extend beyond the
firebox screen.
NOTICE: Surface temperatures
ofadjacentwallsandmantelsbe-
comehotduringoperation.Walls
and mantels above the firebox
may become hot to the touch.
If installed properly, these tem-
peratures meet the requirement
ofthenationalproductstandard.
Follow all minimum clearances
shown in this manual.
Mantel Clearances for Built-In
Installation
If placing custom mantel above built-in fire-
box, you must meet the minimum allowable
clearance between mantel shelf and top of
firebox opening shown in Figure 7. These
arethe minimumallowablemantel clearances
for a safe installation. Use larger clearances
wherever possible to minimize the heating of
objects and materials placed on the mantel.

BUILT-IN FIREBOX INSTALLATION
Built-in installation of this firebox involves
installing firebox into a framed-in enclosure.
Thismakesthefront of firebox flush with wall.
If installing a mantel above the firebox, you
must follow the clearances shown in Figure
7, Page 11. Follow these instructionstoinstall
the firebox in this manner.
1. Frame in rough opening. The firebox
framing should be constructed of 2 x 4
lumber or heavier. Use dimensions and
rough opening layout in Figure 8. Adjust
framingsothatfireboxflusheswithfinished
wall surface. If installing in a corner, use
dimensionsinFigure9,for roughopening.
2. Install gas piping to firebox location. See
GasLineInstallationonPage16 andCon-
necting to Gas Supply in log set owner’s
manual.

the firebox front facing.

3. Carefully set firebox in front of rough
opening with back of firebox inside wall
opening.
4. Carefully insert firebox into rough opening.
5. Attach firebox to wall studs using nails
or wood screws through holes in nailing
flange (see Figure 10).
6. Install and properly test gas log heater.
Follow installation instructions included
with the vent-free gas log heater that is
being installed.
IMPORTANT:When finishing your firebox,
combustible materials such as wall board,
gypsum board, sheet rock, drywall, plywood,
etc.may bebutted upnext tothesidesandtop
of the firebox. Combustible materials should
never overlap the firebox front facing.
IMPORTANT:Noncombustible materials
such as brick, tile, etc. may overlap the front
facing,butshould never cover any necessary
openings.

INSTALLING FIREBOX USING
OPTIONAL CUSTOM BUILT
MANTELS
This firebox may be installed using a cabinet
mantel against a wall in your home. The
firebox and cabinet mantel can be installed
directly on the floor. Mantels may be avail-
able from your retailer or custom built for
your home.
1. Assemble cabinet mantel as instructed.
2. Install gas piping to firebox location. See
GasLine Installationon Page 16.Youmay
have to cut an access hole in the floor or
wallto rungaslinetofirebox.Makesure to
locate access hole so cabinet mantel will
cover it when installed (see Figure 11).
3. Place firebox on floor in desired location.
Make sure mantel will be flush against
wall when installed.
4. Carefully slide cabinet mantel over fire-
box. Be careful not to scratch firebox,
cabinetmantel, flooring,etc., when install-
ing (see Figure 12).
5. Install and properly test gas log heater.
Follow installation instructions included
with the vent-free gas log heater that is
being installed.

REFRACTORY PANEL INSTALLATION
1. Remove screen assemblies and all hard-
ware components out of the firebox. The
bottompanelis preinstalled in the firebox.
Makesurethe bottom refractory panels is
centered in the firebox and flush with the
front of the fireplace.
2. Place cardboard on top of bottom refrac-
torypanelasaprotection to prevent ship-
ping and scratching during installation of
the other panels.

3. Install rear refractory panel. This panel
hasatop and bottom.Todeterminewhich
is which, match up the pattern on the rear
panel with the left and right sides before
installingthe rear panel. Make sure panel
is center before continuing.
4. Install the right and left refractory panels
with the gas line knockouts orientated
down toward the bottom refractory. Align
theleft andrightpanels withthe rearpanel
so the grout lines line up.
5. Install the upper corner brackets and
tighten set screws (Figure 13).

should be done after the fire-
place is placed in a permanent

INSTALLING SCREEN
1. Slide round end of screen rod into rings at
topofscreen.Attachonepush-onnuttoend
of rod before attaching last ring of screen.
2. Insert the round end screen rod into hole
on the left and right side of smoke shelf
(Figure 14).
3. Mountflatendofscreenrodwith#10x5/8"
to center of smoke shelf.
4. Install other screen rod in same manner.

Gas line hook up should be done by your
supplier or a qualified service person.
NOTE: Before you proceed, make sure your
gas supply is turned off.
Use only a 1/2" black iron pipe and appropri-
ate fittings.
1. Remove knockout indentation on refrac-
toryor firebrick wall located above refrac-
tory hearth floor. Knockout indentation
mustbe firmlytapped withanysolid object
such as a 1/2" dowel until it is released.
Removefragmented portionsofrefractory
(see Figure 15).
2. Remove gas line cover plate located on
either side of fireplace and pull out insula-
tion from gas line conduit sleeve. Save
insulation for reuse. Replace screws.
3. Run a 1/2" black iron gas line into fireplace
throughtherearatgaslineconduitsleeve(if
usingaraisedplatform,addheight).Provide
sufficientgaslineintofireplacechamberfor
fitting connection (see Figure 16).
NOTE: Secure incoming gas line to wood
framing to provide rigidity for threaded end.
4. Repackinsulationaroundgasline andinto
sleeve opening. Seal any gaps between
gas line and refractory knockout hole with
refractory cement or commercial furnace
cement,Installthe gasapplianceorcap-off
gas line if desired.

SERVICE HINTS
When Gas Pressure Is Too Low
• pilot will not stay lit
• burners will have delayed ignition
• appliance will not produce specified heat
• propane/LP gas supply may be low
You may feel your gas pressure is too low. If
so, contact your local propane/LP or natural
gas supplier.
