IMPORTANT: These engine may not be equipped
with a spark arrester muffler. It is a violation of
California Publi Resour e Code Se tion 4442 to
use or operate the engine on any forest- overed,
brush- overed, or grass- overed land. Other states
or federal areas may have similar laws.

B hind Trail Cutt r was d sign d to us a U1 batt ry group siz or small r.
Us a 12-volt batt ry with a minimum of 230 cold cranking amps (CCA)
B car ful not to conn ct th batt ry in r v rs polarity, as this will short circuit th batt ry charging syst m.
Always conn ct th positiv (+) batt ry cabl to th batt ry t rminal b for conn cting th n gativ (-)
batt ry cabl , so your tools cannot caus a short circuit if th y touch a ground d part whil tight ning th
positiv (+) batt ry cabl nd.
Th batt ry positiv (+) cabl is conn ct d to th start r sol noid t rminal as shown. And th batt ry
n gativ (-) cabl is conn ct d to th ngin mounting bolt at th factory.

A battery can explode if you do not follow the correct
procedure, seriously injuring anyone nearby.

OPERATING YOUR NEW WALK BEHIND
INTENDED USE
This is not a lawn mow r. Th Pr dator and Pr dator Talon is d sign d for cutting
ov rgrown brush, w ds, and oth r typ s of organic growth. This unit is capabl of
cl aring small saplings of 1.5” in diam t r or l ss to a h ight of approximat ly 4”.
TRAVEL SPEED
Sp d can b chang d by choosing a high r or low r g ar using th g arshift l v r
locat d on th handl bars. Do not adjust th sp d with th blad ngag d. To shift th
cutt r into r v rs , r l as th “GROUND CONTROL” l v r, dis ngag th blad , and
rotat th shift l v r to th l ft. Pr ss down slightly on th l v r to pass th st p and
continu to rotat th l v r to th l ft “R” position.
PROPULSION
Th Pr dator and Pr dator Talon ar s lf-prop ll d and controll d by a “GROUND
CONTROL” l v r. To ngag th driv , shift th transaxl to a g ar and activat th l ft
handl bar l v r by squ zing it against th handl . R l asing th l v r will dis ngag
th s lf-prop l.
Und r most conditions cutting should b don in a low g ar (1st or 2nd). Upp r g ars
should b us d for conditions wh r w ds and brush ar thinn d out or not as tall. In
confin d ar as th machin can b push d forwards or backwards by r l asing th
“GROUND CONTROL” l v r, shifting th transaxl to n utral, and pushing th
machin .
ENGAGING THE BLADE
An “OPERATOR PRESENCE” l v r and a “BLADE ENGAGE” control work tog th r
to ngag th blad . Both d vic s must b activat d b for th blad will work.
R l asing th “OPERATOR PRESENCE” l v r will dis ngag both th blad and th
“BLADE ENGAGE” control.

STARTING THE ENGINE
S ngin manufactur r’s r comm ndations for th typ and amount of oil and fu l us d.
Engin must b l v l to accurat ly ch ck and fill oil. Do not ov rfill.
• Mak sur unit is l v l, blad is dis ngag d, and transaxl in “NEUTRAL”
• Ch ck spark plug wir , oil l v l, and fu l l v l.
• Ch ck all l ctrical conn ctions for build-up of d bris.
• If quipp d with a fu l shutoff valv , turn th valv to th ON position.
• Mov throttl control to “FAST”, or “CHOKE” if chok is n d d.
• Honda Engin s
• For r coil starting, turn ignition k y to th “ON”
position and pull rop with a
singl fluid motion. For l ctric starting, turn th k y to th “START” position.
• Briggs and Stratton Engin s
• Flip th ngin control switch to th “ON” position.
• Pull th start r cord slowly until r sistanc is f lt and th n pull rapidly to avoid
kickback, r p at until th ngin has start d.
• If “CHOKE” was us d, r turn th l v r to th “RUN” position.
• S t ngin throttl control to “FAST”. Th throttl must b s t in th fast position for
maximum p rformanc .
STOPPING
• Bring th Walk B hind to a compl t stop by r l asing th “GROUND CONTROL” l v r
(l ft handl bar l v r).
• Dis ngag mow r blad by r l asing th “OPERATOR PRESENCE” l v r (right handl
bar l v r).
• R duc ngin idl sp d, and allow ngin to run mom ntarily for cooling.
• Turn th ignition k y (for 12v mod ls) or ngin control switch to th “OFF” position.
BREAKING IN YOUR WALK BEHIND
• Start th ngin prop rly.
• Slowly ngag blad control l v r whil holding th right op rator pr s nc handl bar
l v r down.
• Und r sup rvision, allow blad to rotat and ngin to idl for 5 minut s.
• Dis ngag blad .
• Shift through ach g ar. Whil in ach g ar ngag th “GROUND CONTROL” l v r and
trav l 20 yards to nsur transaxl works prop rly.
BEGIN CUTTING
• Mak sur ar a is cl ar of all bystand rs.
• Mak sur that all guards, b lt guid s, and th spark plug wir ar prop rly attach d.
• Start ngin , s t ngin throttl control at maximum ngin idl sp d for b st r sults.
• Allow ngin to run a f w mom nts and slowly ngag blad .
• Mov transaxl into low g ar and activat “GROUND CONTROL” l v r.
• Turning is don by rotating th handl s l ft or right. This machin has significant w ight
and may tak mor ffort to turn than on may xp ct. Turning could tak practic .

SUGGESTED PRACTICES
• Always op rat with th ngin at full throttl wh n cutting to assur th b st cutting
p rformanc .
• If th ar a is w t, allow it to dry. W t w d clumps will coll ct on th bottom of th
d ck.
• Go slow wh n cutting d ns ar as. Som d ns ar as may n d to b gon ov r

BEFORE EACH SEASON
A n w spark plug and a cl an air filt r will assur prop r air-fu l mixtur and h lp your ngin
run b tt r and last long r.

DAILY MAINTENANCE
Mak sur all nuts and bolts ar tight and cott r pins and r tain r springs ar s cur .
K p your blad s sharp. Obs rv all saf ty pr cautions.
BLADE CARE AND SERVICE
For b st r sults blad s must b k pt sharp. Th blad s can b sharp n d with a f w strok s of a
fil or grinding wh l. Do Not att mpt to sharp n blad s whil th y ar on th machin .
Important: Replace blades that have been damaged or deeply nicked.
Important: Check blade and spindle hardware on a regular basis to make sure nuts are
tight.
