1.1 Warning and Safety Identifier
When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe the precautions indicated by the
warning and safety identifiers to prevent personal injury or equipment damage.
Table 1-1 lists the warning and safety identifiers on the NetBackup 5200 and the meanings of
the identifiers.
Table 1-1 Identifiers and meanings
Identifier Meaning
ESD prevention identifier
When you perform operations at this area,
you need to take strict measures, such as
wearing electrostatic discharge (ESD)
preventive gloves or an ESD preventive
wrist strap, to avoid electrostatic injuries.
Sub-rack grounding identifier
Indicating the grounding position.

Identifier Meaning
Operation identifier
Indicates the procedure for opening the
chassis cover.
Drive letter identifier
Indicates the slot where a disk resides.
The disks in slot a and slot b are system
disks.
1.2 ESD Prevention
When you install and maintain the equipment, follow the safety precautions of ESD prevention
to ensure personal safety and of the device.
indicates an electrostatic sensitive area. When performing operations at this area,
you need to take strict measures, such as wearing an ESD preventive wrist strap, ESD preventive
gloves, and ESD preventive clothes, to avoid personal injuries or device damages caused by the
static electricity.
To protect the devices, note the following during operations:
lDo not touch the exposed device modules with bare hands because the static electricity of
the human body may damage the electrostatic sensitive elements on the circuit boards.
lThe electronic circuit is prone to ESD damage. When you handle disks, especially raw
disks, you need to wear an ESD preventive wrist strap and ESD preventive gloves.
lThe ESD preventive strap prevents electrical static discharge from the human body.
lWhen you carry and move parts, you must use a dedicated ESD preventive bag.
1.3 Laser Safety
When you install and maintain the device, follow the laser safety precautions to ensure your
safety and safety of the device.

Routine Maintenance 1 Safety Precautions
Issue 01 (2010-08-30) Symantec Corporation 1-3

Laser safety precautions include two aspects:
lBodily injury
lDevice damage
Human Body Injury
WARNING
The laser sent by the optical interface board is invisible infrared ray. While maintaining the
device, protect your eyes from the laser; otherwise, permanent injury to your eyes may occur.
Device Damage
To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following:
lIf the optical interface on the device or on the patch cord is not in use, cover the optical
interface with a dust-proof cap.
lWhen you need to remove the patch cord connecting to the optical interface that is in use,
cover the optical interface and the patch cord connector with dust-proof caps.
lWhen you perform the loopback test on the optical interface with the patch cord, you must
use an attenuator to protect the optical transceiver from the received optical power.
lWhen you use the optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), you need to disconnect the
patch cord between the peer device and the local device to protect the optical transceiver
from the optical power.
lDo not remove or insert unnecessarily the optical transceiver that connects to fibers.
1.4 Using Optical Fibers
You should use optical fibers properly to ensure the normal running of the device; otherwise,
bodily injury or device damage may be caused.
DANGER
The laser beams of the optical interface board or inside the optical fibers may injure your eyes!
When you install and maintain the optical interface board and the optical fiber, keep your eyes
away from, and never stare into the optical interface or the optical fiber connector.
Cleaning Optical Fiber Connectors and Optical Interfaces
The optical fiber connectors and the optical interfaces of the laser must be cleaned with special
cleaning tools and materials listed as follows:
lSpecial cleaning solvent. Isoamylol is preferred, propyl alcohol is the next, alcohol is not
recommended and formalin is forbidden

lNon-woven lens tissue.
lSpecial compressed gas
lCotton swabs (medical cotton swab or other long-staple cotton)
lSpecial cleaning roll (used with Isoamylol)
lSpecial magnifier for optical connectors
Replacing Optical Fibers
When you replace the optical fiber, you should cover the optical connector that is not in use with
dust-proof caps.
1.5 Short-Circuit Protection
When you install and maintain the device, use tools according to the regulations.
Do not put tools, such as the screwdriver on the air intake board of the enclosure; otherwise,
short circuit may occur.
CAUTION
Avoid dropping screws into the sub-rack or the device; otherwise, short circuit may occur.
1.6 Electrical Safety
When you install and maintain the equipment, follow the electrical safety precautions to avoid
device damage or bodily injury.
Power On and Power Off
DANGER
Before you check the installation and cable connection, ensure that the entire storage system is
powered off. Improper connections may cause bodily harm or the device might be damaged
during the check.
CAUTION
If you need to perform hot-line operations and the cables that you touch are power cables, you
must take off the ESD-preventive wrist strap.
lDuring power-on, do not insert or remove the cable. Otherwise, data might be lost.

Routine Maintenance 1 Safety Precautions
Issue 01 (2010-08-30) Symantec Corporation 1-5

lAfter switching off the power supply, wait at least one minute before switching on the
power supply again.
lDo not switch off or on the power before disks stop running. Otherwise, disks may be
damaged and data may be lost.
Troubleshooting
DANGER
Do not touch the connectors of electrical wires and communication cables, for the electricity
inside the electrical wires and communication cables may result in electrical shock.
CAUTION
When you operate a device in the ESD-sensitive area, you must take ESD-preventive measures,
such as wearing an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-preventive clothes , and ESD-preventive
gloves.
Monitor the following items during troubleshooting:
lDo not troubleshoot a device during an electrical storm.
lCheck that the power cables are intact and effective grounding measures are taken.
lKeep the troubleshooting area clean and dry.
