POWER-CORD CAUTION

CAUTION
The switch on this unit will not completely shut off
all power from the AC outlet. Since the power plug
serves as the main disconnect device for the unit,
you will need to unplug it from the AC outlet to shut
down all power. Therefore, make sure the unit has

To avoid fire hazard, the power plug should also be

PRECAUTIONS IN USE
Installation Location
For installation, select a stable location near the television or
stereo system with which the unit will be used.
To ensure long product life, avoid installing this
unit in the following locations:
• Locations exposed to direct sunlight
• Humid or poorly ventilated areas
• Areas of extreme temperatures
• Areas with vibration
• Dusty or smoky areas
• Areas exposed to grease fumes, steam or heat
(such as a kitchen)
Do not place objects on top of the unit
Do not place objects on top of the unit.
To prevent adverse affects of heat
Do not install the unit on top of amplifiers or other
components that generate heat. When installing in a
rack, try by all means to install the unit in a position below
amplifiers or other components that generate heat.
Turn off power when not in use
Depending on the signal condition of television broadcasts,
if the television is turned on when the unit is already on, a
noise may appear on the television screen. Audible noise
may likewise occur when listening to the radio when unit
is already turned on. This phenomenon does not indicate a
malfunction of either the television, radio tuner, or the unit.
In this event, turn off the power to the unit.
Maintenance
To clean the unit, use a polishing cloth to gently wipe the
unit’s surface to remove dust. If the surface is extremely
dirty, wipe with a soft cloth dipped in neutral cleanser diluted
five to six times with water and wrung out well. Do not use
volatile chemicals such as paint thinner or benzenes, as
these may corrode the surface of the panels. Do not use
sprays such as insecticides around the unit. If you plan on
using a chemical cleaning cloth, read the precautionary
statements of the chemical cleaning cloth before using.

INTRODUCTION

Technical Audio Devices Laboratories, Inc. (TADL) grew from the spirit to discover technologies to perfectly recreate the pure
sound of live performances with uncompromising craftsmanship. We have inherited our philosophy from Bart Locanthi—
recognized across the globe as the ultimate sound technologist—who believed that genuine technology is true to the basics
and that genuine technology places greater importance on sound quality than on technology for its own sake.
At TADL, we are honing our technology to create equipment that reproduces musical sounds that evoke both the energy and
impact of live music.
Features
Adopting the newly developed 3rd generation USB engine
The operating delay of the FPGA internal circuit was significantly reduced, the low-level distortion characteristic was improved
and moreover the PCM signal responds to the sampling frequency up to 384 kHz and the bit count up to 32 bits. The DSD
signal DoP system transmission responds to the maximum sampling frequency of 11.2 MHz.
Equipped with the line output volume as the digital media center
As the line output volume is mounted, a simple system can be configured only by connecting a power amplifier. With a variety
of media supported, it is recommended to use this device as a digital media center dedicated to pursuing the pleasure of
enjoying the finest sound quality. The unit is also furnished with an independent headphones volume controller.
Ultra-high C/N* ratio Master Clock featuring UPCG**
Reduction of the total amount of master clock jitter has been previously suggested as a means of attaining even higher levels
of sound quality, TAD Labs has taken this a step further, focusing on reduction of jitter in the low-frequency sideband ranges
relative to the center frequencies, and to that end, a new Ultra-high-Precision Crystal Generator (UPCG) has been developed.
Based on technologies developed for high-speed digital base-station relay facilities, the master clock with its dedicated
oscillators and high-purity conductivity deliver the ultimate performance demanded by a CD player, allowing it to reproduce to
perfection the signals engraved on the disc.

Twin Differential D/A Converters
Twin Burr-Brown digital-audio converters are connected in parallel for improved audio performance in all metrics, including
S/N ratio, linearity, dynamic range, and distortion. These features allow even delicate audio signals to be played back faithfully,
creating a greater degree of breadth in musical reproduction.
Power unit
This unit has the analog unit and digital unit, each of which is equipped with a specialized large-scale toroidal transformer
characterized by high response performance, combining strong dynamism and low noise.
High-Rigidity Construction with Low Center of Gravity
Highly rigid aluminum chassis suppresses effects from external vibrations. Placement of the massive heavy base has been
designed to lower the center of gravity, thus further reducing vibrations. These design elements have made it possible to
reproduce music signals with great stability while avoiding the vibration caused by speaker pressure and other sources.
High-precision D/A converter
Signal conversion is performed through a high-precision D/A converter and sampling rate converter, with reclocking
performed by an ultra-high-purity master clock.
ISO mount technology
This unit has adopted an insulator with the spike structure inherited from the reference series.
Thus, another level of vibration control was implemented.

Inserting the battery

Replace the batteries when you notice a reduction in the operating range of the remote control unit.
WARNING
'Do not use or store batteries in direct sunlight or other excessively hot place, such as inside a car or near a heater. This can
cause batteries to leak, overheat, explode or catch fire. It can also reduce the life or performance of batteries.
'Do not place batteries in locations accessible to infants or small children. If accidentally swallowed, consult medical
attention immediately.
CAUTION
Incorrect use of batteries may result in such hazards as leakage and bursting. Observe the following precautions:
'Never use new and old batteries together.
'Whenloadingbatteriesintothebatterycase,donotbendthebatterycase’sminus(−)terminalwiththeendofthebattery,
since it could cause a short circuit, leakage of battery fluid, and/or unnatural heating.
'Insert the plus and minus sides of the batteries properly according to the marks in the battery case.
'Use type AAA (SUM-4) Manganese (R03) or Alkaline (LR03) dry cell batteries.
'When not using the remote control for a long period of time (1 month or more), remove the batteries from the remote
control, to prevent damage from inadvertent leakage. If battery leakage occurs, wipe up any battery exudate from inside the
case and replace with new fresh batteries.
'When disposing of used batteries, please comply with governmental regulations or environmental public institution’s rules
that apply in your country or area.

CAUTION
'When using the volume function and connecting directly to a power amplifier (without using a pre-amplifier), be sure
to make the connection only after setting the volume to “0” (zero). If the connection is made with the volume set to a
large value, an excessive sound volume is generated to damage the speaker or your hearing ability.
'All the displays are turned off by controlling the switches on the main unit or remote controller (if attached). But, the
power supply is not stopped. To completely block the device from the power supply, it is necessary to disconnect the
power plug (breaker) from the power outlet. Place this device near the power outlet by allowing the power plug (breaker)
to be easily accessible.
'When going on vacation, or otherwise leaving the unit unused for an extended period of time, the power plug should be
disconnected from its power outlet.

Remote control operating range
When using the remote control unit to operate the unit, point the remote control at the
main unit’s remote sensor within the ranges shown in the accompanying illustration.
'The remote control may not operate properly if obstructions exist between the
remote control unit and the remote sensor, or if the angle between the remote
control and the remote sensor is poor.
'Malfunctions may occur if the
unit is used nearby other appliances that emit
infrared light, or if remote control units for other devices utilizing infrared light are
used nearby. Alternately, using this remote control unit near other appliances that also utilize infrared light may cause
those appliances to malfunction.
'Replace the batteries when you notice a reduction in the operating range of the remote control unit.
'The remote control may not operate correctly if strong sunlight or light from fluorescent lamps is allowed to strike the
remote sensor directly. In such cases, change the installation location, or remove the fluorescent lamps to a more
distant location.

Installation
WARNING
'Install the
unit in a flat, level and stable location that provides fully sufficient strength to support the unit ’s weight, since
damage or personal injury may occur if the unit falls from its installation. When installing on a bookshelf or similar
structure, be sure to confirm first that the shelf structure has sufficient strength.
'Never set other items on top of the
unit , or cover the unit with cloths or sheets, since heat dispersion may be impaired,
leading to unnatural heat buildup and potential damage.
INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS
CAUTION
'When installing the
unit , allow a minimum 10 cm clearance from adjacent walls or barriers. In order to facilitate heat
dispersion, the unit should be installed at some distance from other electric components. When installing the unit
on a rack, a minimum of 10 cm clearance should be provided above, behind, and to the sides of the unit . Leaving
insufficient ventilation space around the unit may lead to excessive heat buildup and the potential for fire.
'Never install the
unit on a rug, cushion or other soft surface, or in a narrow location that may interfere with natural air
flow around the unit .

Connecting up
CAUTION
'Do not turn on the power switch to the
unit or the other components until all connections have been completed.
'When connecting components or changing connections, always set the power switch to OFF and disconnect the power
cord from its AC outlet. When making connections, connect the power cord last.

Each time the front-panel INPUT button is pressed, the input mode will change in the following order:

Adjusting the sound volume
Adjusting the balanced/unbalanced line output level
Used when connecting with a power amplifier.
The initial value for the line output is set at 30.
'Make adjustment by using the VOL (
− /+) button on the main unit and the VOLUME (+/ − ) button at the center of
the remote controller.
During operations, the time display or sampling frequency display is switched to the line output sound volume display.

'When using the volume function and connecting directly to a power amplifier (without using a pre-amplifier), be sure to
make the connection only after setting the volume to “0” (zero). If the connection is made with the volume set to a large
value, an excessive sound volume is generated to damage the speaker or your hearing ability.
Adjusting the headphones volume
'Press the VOLUME (−/+) buttons located beside the headphones jack, or the VOLUME (+/−) buttons under the headphones
symbol on the remote control unit.
The default value is preset at 50. This value can be adjusted independently of the balanced/unbalanced line output values.
To fix the line output levels at their maximum
Used when connecting a device, recorder, etc. equipped with the pre-amplification feature.
1. Press the main unit’s VOL (+) button until the display indicates the maximum value of 78.
2. With the value set to its maximum, press and hold the VOL (+) button.
The line output level will be fixed at the maximum value, and the main unit’s VOL (
− /+) buttons and the remote control’s
center VOLUME (+/
− )buttons will be disabled.
At this time, the line output sound volume display is switched to the time display or sampling frequency display.
Hold the VOL (
− )button pressed to activate again the volume function from the status fixed at the max. value.
The line output level is set at 30 (initial value) and the volume function is activated.
Changing the display mode
'Press the DISP button on either the main unit or the remote control unit.

USB connections (default settings)
By connecting this device and your computer with a USB cable, this device can play the music by using the software which is
playable on your computer.
1. Use the main unit’s INPUT button to set the unit to U1 input.
2. Turn on power to the computer.
3. Use a USB cable to connect the unit to the computer; the proper driver will automatically be installed.
U1 (AudioClass 1.0)
'Supported sampling rates include 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, and 96 kHz.
'Supports USB 2.0 High-speed.

'Functionality has been confirmed with Windows 8 (64 bit), Widows 7, Windows Vista (32 bit), Mac OS 10.8, Mac OS 10.7,
Mac OS 10.6. Functionality has not been confirmed for other operating systems and versions.
'To play music with high sampling rates (96 kHz/24 bit, 88.2 kHz/24 bit, etc.), it may be necessary to adjust software settings

U2 (AudioClass 2.0)
'In addition to the USB default mode, the U2 (AudioClass 2.0 DoP) mode, supporting DoP format with 176.4 kHz,
192 kHz, 352.8 kHz, 384 kHz, and DSD signal transmission may be used.
'PCM data is transmitted up to 384 kHz sampling, and DSD data up to 11.2 MHz sampling (as of August, 2021).

• Manual driver installation is unnecessary for Mac users. The driver will be installed automatically when the unit is
connected to a computer via USB cable.
• To make use of internet connections, users must conclude a contract with an internet service provider and pay
whatever fees are required.
2. With the unit in standby mode, simultaneously press the main unit’s INPUT button and power button.
The USB input display will change from [ U1 ] to [ U2 ].
3. Turn on power to the computer.
4. With the unit connected to the computer via USB cable, change the unit’s input to U2.
5. To cancel the current mode, switch the unit to standby mode, then press the power button while holding the main
unit’s INPUT button depressed.
The current mode can also be canceled by using ALL RESET.
CAUTION
'If a Windows terminal device is used without the unit driver installed, or if a Mac OS version (10.5, etc.) is used without
support for the U2 mode, do not set the unit for U2 mode and connect the unit to the computer, since the computer may
lock up.

Digital output with USB input
'When the input is a DSD signal, the signal will be converted to PCM 88.2 kHz and output.
'When the input signal has a sampling rate of 384 kHz or 354.8 kHz, the signal will be output after being converted to
192 kHz and 176.4 kHz respectively.
'Signals with other sampling rates will be output at the same rates as input.

Listening with suppressed DSD signal output
If the DSD signal output from the USB is excessively loud and sound is distorted, you can suppress the output level to make it
easier to listen. Initial value for the DSD modulation rate is factory preset to 50 % (high output level).
'While holding the main unit’s front-panel MUTE button depressed, press the headphones VOLUME (−) button.
Each time the button is pressed, the DSD modulation rate alternates between 50 % (high output level) and 100 % (low
output level).
ECO (power saving) mode
When this function is enabled, if no input signal is detected for 30 minutes, the unit automatically enters the standby mode.
U.S. model : ECO OFF (factory default setting)
European model: ECO ON (factory default setting)
1. With the unit in standby mode, hold the main unit’s headphones VOLUME (+) button depressed and then press the
power button. When this is done, the ECO ON mode will be enabled.
The display will then show the [ ECO ON ] message.
2. With the unit in standby mode, hold the main unit’s headphones VOLUME (−) button depressed and then press the
power button. When this is done, the ECO OFF mode will be disabled.
The display will then show the [ ECO OFF ] message.
ALL RESET
The line output is set at the max. value (78).
The default USB mode is U1(AudioClass 1.0).
European model only: this setting sets the ECO (power saving) mode to ECO OFF.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Incorrect operations are often mistaken for trouble and malfunctions. If you think that there is something wrong with this
component, check the points below. Sometimes the trouble may lie in another component. Investigate the other components
and electrical appliances being used. For information regarding computer settings, consult the TAD website (http://tad-labs.
com). If the trouble cannot be rectified even after exercising the checks listed below, ask your dealer.

This unit is designed as a consumer audio product (audio/video component). It is not designed for long continuous
use as a commercial BGM source, nor for use in automobiles, ships, or outdoors.
