TN8271 Network Gateway Release Note v1.02.06
25 June 2013
This technical note contains information to accompany the May 2013 release of the TN8271 Network
Gateway software version 1.02.06.
1. What’s new in this release
1.1 Enhancement of the RTP transmit timing
Tait reference:
TIMS00098965
When the gateway transcoded AMBE VDP to G.711 RTP, it sent 3 RTP
packets at once. The next three were then sent approximately 60 ms later.
The gateway now buffers and times the RTP so that each packet is sent at
20 ms intervals.
2. Compatibility
Kernel Compatibility This version of the Network Gateway software works with kernel version
QNA10ASK036007
The following table shows which combinations of kernel and application
firmware are supported:
Kernels
3.1.01 3.6.04 3.6.06 3.6.07

3. Problems fixed
3.1 WebUI: No error given indicating why VOX and E-Line PTT cannot both be selected
Tait reference:
TIMS00097843
When attempting to activate the voice detection or E-line PTT options, if the
other was already selected the page could be saved but the change was not
accepted, and no error was given indicating why.
Solution
Now, when PTT is enabled, the VOX detection automatically gets set to
disabled. If VOX detection is enabled, then PTT automatically gets disabled.
Both can be disabled simultaneously.
3.2 WebUI: Clicking Save multiple times directed user to another page
Tait reference:
TIMS00097849
If the user clicked Save a number of times before the status page was
loaded, the user interface navigated to a different page.
Solution
After editing and clicking Save, the button is now
greyed out and disabled so
that the user is not able to click on it again until the Edit button is used to
make more changes.
3.3 Initial digital output level showed wrong values on WUI
Tait reference:
TIMS00101453
The initial pin level for Digital output pins were not matched with the
information on the WUI. After being set, the WUI showed correct information.
Solution
Fixed to set the digital output level as shown on WUI.
3.4 E&M lines active level configurations were incorrect
Tait reference:
TIMS00101059
Line level levels have now been set to active low in the WUI.
3.5 Some CCTM commands showed two prompts
Tait reference:
TIMS00100997
Some CCTM commands showed two prompts and sometimes one is sent
before it's available.
This might be the reason for missing some CCTM commands.
Solution
In CCTM, the prompt will now only show if the CCTM state is not delayed.
3.6 WebUI: IP addresses could be entered and displayed as 192.168.00001.00001.
Tait reference:
TIMS00097851
IP addresses were not reformatted before being displayed; leading zeros
we
re not omitted.
Leading zeroes are now stripped by the node before validation.

3.7 WebUI: Slow response time
Tait reference:
TIMS00097856
The response time of the WebUI was very slow. When editing a page, if a
change was made it took a noticeable amount of time for the Save button to
become active, and once clicked it took a noticeable amount of time for the
page to refresh - up to several seconds. During this time there was no
indication that the action had even been registered.
This was tested on several browsers running on different Operating
Systems, and on several gateways.
Solution
Now when saving changes the WUI gets updated very quickly.
3.8 WebUI: Error on user self-deletion was misleading
Tait reference:
TIMS00097944
The NGW installation and operation manual stated "you can enter a new
username and then delete the default username" (p23); but not that you
needed to log out first if you were currently logged on as the default user.
An
error is displayed stating that "The data that you tried to delete cannot be
removed."
Solution
The procedure in the manual has been updated, and if trying to delete the
user who is currently logged in, the WebUI indicates an error message
saying "You cannot delete yourself.”
3.9 WebUI: Selecting Status after saving edited configuration caused NGW to crash
Tait reference:
TIMS00100423
When editing NGW configuration (under Configuration->Features), clicking
Status right after saving the configuration caused NGW to crash.
This has now been fixed.
3.10 WebUI: Could not select an individual user profile
Tait reference:
TIMS00100413
Under Configuration -> Users. When trying to select a particular user by
selecting the tick box in front of that user, all users would be selected.
This has now been fixed.
3.11 WebUI: The delete-user confirmation popup 'ok' button contained dialogue text
Tait reference:
TIMS00097858
The dialog box is now formatted correctly.
3.12 Audio level calibration
Tait reference:
TIMS00099514
Some network gateways don’t have Audio level calibration values.
The default value is now used if there’s no audio calibration value.

4. Known problems or limitations
The following are known problems or limitations.
4.1 Too much Ethernet traffic may cause a restart
Tait reference:
TIMS00092998
Sending a high rate of traffic at the Ethernet port of the Network Gateway
may cause it to restart.
4.2 WebUI: Whole series of reboot popup windows unnecessary
Tait reference:
TIMS00097859
When performing a reboot from the webUI, a series of popup windows is
displayed. The first offers the user the option to proceed or cancel. The
second reports that the reboot is in progress but still displays the 'reboot' and
'cancel' buttons greyed out. This window then closes and a third opens
which displays almost exactly the same text as the second but with a
different selection of buttons.
This second window is unnecessary.
4.3 WebUI: Mouse cursor does not change when hovering over the Choose File button
Tait reference:
TIMS00100414
The cursor does not change to indicate that the Choose File button is
clickable on the upload file dialog. This is a limitation of the file upload
process in web browsers, in which the file chooser widget cannot be
customised.
4.4 Firmware upgrade through WebUI is not consistently successful
Tait reference:
TIMS00101776
When upgrading TN8271 network gateway through WebUI, sometimes the
upgrade fails. This is very infrequent.
4.5 WebUI: Entering large or negative numbers into VOX settings results in wrap around
errors
Tait reference:
TIMS00097847
Entering a value over 255 or a negative value into either the buffer size or
hang time fields results in a wrap-around error.
5. Upgrade Procedure
5.1 Upgrading using WebUI
This procedure is available only if your network gateway’s version is 1.02.06
or newer. If your network gateway is older than this, please follow the steps
in “5.2 Upgrading using script”.
You will need the firmware upgrade file (QNA10ASU010206), which is
available on the Tait Technical Resources website:
1. On the network gateway user interface, go to the upgrade page.

TN-2115-SR

www.taitradio.com
2. Click the upload button to select the firmware file.
3. The file will be uploaded and installed. The network gateway will
reboot.
5.2 Upgrading using Script
You will need the following items:
1. TFTP server.
2. Firmware files (QNA10ASA010206 and QNA10ASK036007) and
firmware upgrading script (q8271_upscript and
q8271_testfile). These files are available on the Tait Technical
Resources website (http://support.taitradio.com/home).
3. IP addresses of the network gateway and TFTP server.
The name of the script file for the network gateway is q8271_upscript.
This file is a UNIX text file. Open the script file and check that it has the
correct filenames. Find the following lines and check that they are correct:
file_version=”QNA10ASA010206”
kernel_version=”QNA10ASK036007”
Copy the four files (QNA10ASA010206, QNA10ASK036007,
q8271_upscript and q8271_testfile
) to the TFTP server and proceed
as follows.
1. Connect to the network gateway using SSH.
2. Get the upgrade script from the TFTP server:
tftp –g –r q8271_upscript <tftp_server_ip>
3. Change the permission of the script:
chmod +x q8271_upscript
4. Execute the script file:
./q8271_upscript <tftp_server_ip>
5. Follow the prompts.
