TECHNICAL BULLETIN
Based on the experience acquired on several plants and in order to properly wire the
TIR409 sensors to the NT935 IR monitoring unit, we recommend as essential to read
and carefully follow the instructions indicated on the instruction manual and in the
technical bulletin 004-15.
In order to avoid operating anomalies due to the lack of respect for the installation
Standards and/or related to high interferences (spikes) occurring in the plants,
Tecsystem has developed the HSS:

What is it?
The HSS is an innovative electronic device able to reduce the effects of the surge
spikes on the 24Vdc power line to 2kV (impulse simulation as described in EN 61000-
4-5 SURGE).
Above all regulations
The devices fed at 24Vdc are not regulated by the a.m. standard and, moreover, the
EN 60204-1 standard “Safety of machinery. Electrical equipment of machines, Part 1
General requirements, Point 4.4.2”prescribes that in order to limit the
electromagnetic interferences and to ensure a correct operation, some procedures
must be respected for the installation of all electrical equipment, such as shielded or
twisted cables which must be positioned away from the power cables.

Why and where it is necessary the use of Hyper Surge Suppressor (HSS).
In case of special plant conditions due to interferences on the power lines or where
the installation has not been carried in accordance with the regulations in force, as
the variations of the magnetic flux on the power lines may induce an electromotive
force on the signal transport cables, generating surges whose intensity triggers the
intervention of the protective circuit (varistor) of the TIR409 sensor.
How to install the HYPER SURGE SUPPRESSOR (HSS)
The HSS was developed for a quick and easy installation.
To ensure the full operation of the system, each TIR409 sensor must be connected to
a dedicated HSS as per image 2.

The plug & play connection mode of the TIR409
sensor allows to easily unplug the TIR409 sensor
cable previously installed, connect the HSS to the
TIR409 sensor and the sensor cable to the HSS, as
per image 3 .
After that, remove the bi-adhesive film which is
placed on the back of the HSS and fix the device
just above the TIR409 sensor, as per image 4.

Always check the bi-adhesive hold
Always keep a safe distance from the HSS and the transformer windings.
After application of the HSS and before reenergizing the transformer - if possible - it is strongly
recommended to power the control unit and the sensors to verify the good operation and the correct
reading of the TIR409 sensors.
The connection of the wires (color) HSS - TIR409 must be according to the following table:

NOTE: we recommend not to modify or extend the connecting cable between the
products. Any change may cause malfunctions.

The use of the product at temperatures higher than 85 °C may result in malfunctions; the user must verify
the correct operation of the product.
CAUTION:
Before making any electrical test on the transformer (eg. dielectric strength etc.) all
electronic devices must be disconnected. Any disturbance (spikes) on the 4.20mA
inputs/outputs or the power supply may cause failure of the installed electronic devices.
