1Introduction

Chemical Compatibility
The syringe module is intended for use with sample matrices with the
following characteristics:
low-acid aqueous solutions (up to 1% HNO3 or HCl)
low-viscosity oils
low to high dissolved solids
The system is not suitable for high viscosity samples.
NOTICE
Avoid use with chemicals which are likely to precipitate or form deposits on
the internal surfaces, such as silver chloride. Samples which contain AgCl may
contaminate the internal surfaces and require the replacement of the tubing.
Wetted components are made of Polyetherimide (PEI) and
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). When these inert, non-metallic materials are

used at temperatures less than 135°C, they can withstand repeated exposure
to the following substances:
Predominantly aqueous solutions of acids (less than 10%), including HNO3
and HCl.
Predominantly aqueous solutions of strong bases (less than 10%)
Common organic solvents such as acetone, alcohols, ethyl acetate,
Methylethylketone (MEK), petroleum oils and derived fuels,
tetrachloroethylene, toluene, kerosene and xylene.
NOTICE
DAMAGE FROM CHEMICAL EXPOSURE
Prolonged or repeated exposure to temperatures greater than 135°C and to
the following substances can cause failure of the wetted components:
Acids greater than 10%.
Hydrofluoric acid (HF).
Solutions of concentrated bases (greater than 10% potassium,
ammonium, or sodium hydroxides).
Partially halogenated hydrocarbons or extremely aggressive organic
solvents (chloroform, methylene dichloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethane).
Operator Qualifications
To use this product, you should have a working knowledge of the equipment
with which the syringe module will be used.
WARNING
CHEMICAL INJURY HAZARD
Make sure you know the hazards associated with all of the chemicals you
are using, and take the appropriate precautions. Exposure to laboratory
chemicals may result in serious injury.
Choosing a Location for Installation
Proximity to the Instrumentation
Tubing length affects the time it takes for fluid to reach its destination and the
volume of fluid required. When introducing very small sample volumes (flow
rates less than 50 µL min-1), minimize the length of the connecting sample
tubing. For the introduction of sample volumes to analytical instrumentation
such as ICP-MS, where flow rates of greater than 50 µL min-1 will be employed,
the length of connecting sample tubing between the syringe pump and a
nebulizer is less critical. The syringe module can be mounted on either side of
the autosampler or it may be placed on the workbench.

Space Requirements
You will need easy access to the back of the syringe module to reach the power
switch. As a minimum, allow at least 5 cm behind the syringe module for cable
egress, ventilation, and access to the power switch. Always position the
equipment so that it is easy to disconnect the power cord.
Power Requirements
The syringe module receives power through the connection to the external
desktop “brick” power supply. Place the module within 1.2 meters of a power
outlet.
WARNING
SHOCK AND FIRE HAZARD
Use only the provided power supply. The power supply must be plugged into
an outlet which has a protective ground connection.
The power supply must be connected to an AC power source that will not
apply more than 240VAC between the supply conductors and ground. A
protective ground connection is required for safe operation.
Ensure that you position the syringe module so that the plug is easily
accessible (is not blocked) and can be quickly disconnected if needed. In case
of hazard, the power cord should be disconnected from the wall socket. Do not
plug in the power supply until ready to operate the pump.
Unpacking the Syringe Pump Module
Inspect external packaging upon receipt for signs of shipping damage. Inspect
all items during unpacking and notify the carrier immediately of any concealed
damage.
If the system is shipped or removed from storage during cold weather, allow
the equipment to equilibrate to room temperature before opening and
exposing to warm, humid air.
CAUTION
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE FROM CONDENSATION
If condensation forms on or inside the pump module, allow it to dry
thoroughly before connecting it to a power source and operating it. Failure to
do so may cause equipment damage.
NOTE
Keep the factory packaging for use in case the product ever needs to be
returned or shipped to another location.

2Installing the Syringe
Module
The syringe pump module may be placed on the workbench, or it can be
attached to the autosampler using an optional mounting block.
Installing the Accessory Module Mounting Blocks
The syringe pump module can be mounted on an accessory mounting block,
and the mounting block can be installed on either side of the autosampler.
There are two types of mounting blocks. An inside mounting block is designed
to attach directly to the autosampler. An outside mounting block is designed to
attach to an inside mounting block.

You will need a Philips head screwdriver and a set of Allen (hex) wrenches.
1Turn the power switches on the power supply, autosampler, and syringe pump
module OFF.
2Place an inside mounting block next to the autosampler on the side where you
want it.

3Check that the black pin is in the position toward the front of the autosampler.
If necessary, turn the block over and move the pin to the other hole.

4Use four hex-head screws to attach the mounting block to the frame of the
autosampler.

The installed mounting block should look like this:

5If more than one module is needed on one side of the autosampler, then an
outside mounting block needs to be fitted to accommodate that module. The
outside mounting block can be fitted by positioning the white mounting pins
on the side of the block (as shown in FIGURE 2-1) into the spaces in the side of
the inside mounting block (as can be seen in FIGURE 2-4) and pushing the
outside mounting block down until it is flush with the inside mounting block.

Mounting the Syringe Pump Modules
1Place the syringe pump on the mounting block. The black pin on the block fits
into the hole on the underside of the module.
2Push the module back until the front is flush with the front of the autosampler.

NOTE
To remove the pump from its mounting block, slide it forward as far as it will
go, then slide it back about 1 mm before lifting it.

Connecting the Tubing
NOTICE
Tighten the fittings using only your fingers. Turn the fittings slowly at first,
making sure they are not cross-threaded. Using excessive force will damage
both the fittings and the valve.
The direction of liquid flow through the valve at the top of the syringe is set by
software.

1Place a connector and ferrule on the free end of the input tubing. Do the same
for the output tubing.

2Connect the tubing to the valve at the top of the syringe pump. Tighten the
connectors using your fingers.
NOTE
The tubing and connectors may vary by application.

Connecting the Power Supply
It is important to use the appropriate power cord for your country. Use only
the provided power supply. The syringe pump module is typically powered by
a desktop transformer, although some configurations may be powered by
another kind of power supply.
1Turn the power switches on the power supply, autosampler, and syringe pump
module OFF.
2Connect the power supply to the 24V port on the back of the syringe pump
module.
3Check the plug on the power cord to verify that it is of the correct type for your
country.
4Plug the power cord into a power outlet.
5Plug the power cord into the power supply.

Connecting the Syringe Module to the Autosampler
For many applications, a host PC controls the both the autosampler and
syringe pump module via a single serial or USB connection. The syringe pump
commands are then passed through to the syringe pump module.
You will need a serial cable equipped with two male DB-9 connectors.
1Plug one end of the cable into the autosampler’s COM 2 port.
When syringe pump commands are received on the autosampler’s COM 1 or
USB port, the autosampler will pass the commands out through its COM 2 port.
2Connect the other end of the cable to the syringe pump module’s COM port.
3Finger-tighten both screws of the connectors.

Connecting the Syringe Module Directly to the Host PC
The syringe pump module may be controlled by a direct connection to a host
PC. The syringe pump module supports the following communications
protocols:
The USB interface is the standard configuration. A virtual COM port is
created so that the connection looks like a standard RS-232 serial port to
the host PC software.
The serial (RS-232) interface is simple and reliable, but the host computer
may lack a free serial port.
The RS-485 serial interface is provided for compatibility with certain
instruments.
Use either a serial cable or a USB cable (not both).
Connecting a USB Cable
You will need an “A-B” USB cable.

1Power on both the computer and the syringe pump module
2Plug one end of the cable into the host computer's USB port.
3Plug the other end into the syringe pump module’s USB port.
The computer screen should display a "New Hardware Found" window. A USB
driver must be installed to make the USB port emulate an RS-232 COM port,
and the installation must be repeated for each USB connection.
4Allow the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard to use Windows Update to
search for a driver for the USB port.
In most cases, the driver will be found online and installed automatically. This
process may take several minutes.
If the driver is not installed automatically, insert the CD-ROM and allow the
wizard to search the CD-ROM and install the driver (the exact procedure
depends on the version of the Windows operating system). For Microsoft
Windows 7, you may need to navigate to the “FTDI Driver” folder on the CD-
ROM to find the driver file named “ftdiport.inf”. The hardware will be identified
as an “FT 232R USB UART” and then as a “USB Serial Converter.”

5When driver installation is complete, make a note of which COM port number
was assigned. The COM port number may be displayed in a “bubble” in the
lower right corner of the screen.
6Confirm that the COM port selected for the USB matches the port selected in
the host computer's instrument control software.
Connecting a Serial Cable
Use either a serial cable or a USB cable (not both).
You will need a serial cable equipped with two male DB-9 connectors.
1Plug one end of the cable into the host computer’s serial (COM) port.
If the computer has more than one serial port, make sure to use the same
port which is selected in the instrument control software.
2Finger-tighten both screws of the connector.
3Connect the other end of the cable to the syringe pump module’s COM port.
4Finger-tighten both screws of the connector.
NOTES
If a host computer serial port with a DB-9F, a DB-25M, or a DB-25F connector
(9 pin D-subminiature receptacle or 25 pin D-subminiature plug or receptacle)
must be used, use an adapter to convert the serial port to a DB-9M. Do not use
a “null modem” adapter.
When interconnecting any computing devices, keep the communications
cables away from sources of electromagnetic or radio frequency (RF)
interference, such as electric motors, transformers, fluorescent light ballasts,
or RF energy sources. Limit cable runs for RS-232C to less than 16 meters. If
these conditions cannot be satisfied, use low-impedance, fully shielded cables
to provide satisfactory operation. The cables are available from many sources,
but you will need to specify the correct mating connectors and “straight-
through” (DTE-DCE) wiring.
Installing a Syringe
NOTICE
The syringe should be tightened with just your fingers; using pliers or other
tools could damage the syringe.
1Open the control software and initialize communication.
2Use the manual controls to move the barrel of the syringe to 1/2.

3Remove the plunger thumbscrew at the base of the syringe plunger.

4If you are replacing a syringe, carefully unscrew the syringe barrel (about 1
1/2 turns) while pulling downward slightly. Then slide the syringe plunger
from the plunger shaft.

5To install a syringe, place the plunger over the plunger shaft. Line up the barrel
with the fitting. Screw the barrel onto the fitting while pushing upward slightly.
6Replace the plunger thumbscrew at the base of the syringe plunger.
7Once the syringe has been successfully attached to the module, return to the
software and initialize the pump to push the syringe plunger to its starting
position.
Starting the Pump
1Turn the power switch (if any) on the power supply ON.
2Turn the power switch on the syringe pump module ON.
3Use the control software to actuate the pump.

Shutting Down the Pump
1Turn the power switch on the syringe pump module OFF.
2If the power supply is equipped with a power switch, turn it OFF.
3If you will be performing maintenance, unplug the power cord either at the
power supply or at the wall outlet.
In case of emergency, immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

3Maintaining and
Troubleshooting the
Product
Cleaning the Syringe Module
It is important to clean up spills and remove contaminants, such as abrasives,
from the moving parts. It may also be necessary to chemically neutralize spills.
1Shut down and unplug the autosampler and syringe module.
2Wipe the exterior surfaces using a towel dampened with a lab-grade cleaning
agent. Do not allow liquid to enter the cabinet of the syringe module.
3Wipe with a towel dampened with clear water.
4Dry using a lint-free wiper or dry towel.
The syringe module must be thoroughly dry before you turn the power on.
Cleaning the Syringe
Clean the syringe every few months or whenever it becomes dirty.
1Remove the syringe from the syringe module as described on page 13.

2Pull out the plunger.

3Inspect the seal and replace it if it is worn, cracked, or damaged. (For
replacement parts, contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies. See page 2 for
contact information.)
4Wipe the inside of the syringe barrel, the plunger, and the seal using a lint-free
laboratory wiper or paper towel.
5If necessary, use a soft nylon brush (such as a toothbrush) to gently loosen dirt
from the seal.
6Insert the plunger back into the syringe.
7(Optional) Prepare a solution of water and a mild detergent. Manually operate
the syringe a few times to aspirate the solution.
8Place some clean water in a cup or beaker. Manually operate the syringe
several times to rinse any remaining contamination.

Returning the Product to CETAC for Service
Refer to the following information if you need to return the product to
Teledyne CETAC Technologies for service.
Shipping the Product
Follow these guidelines when shipping the product:
Use the original packing materials. If the original shipping materials are
not available, you may be able to purchase packaging from Teledyne
CETAC. Alternatively, place a generous amount of shock-absorbing
material around the instrument and place it in a box that does not allow
movement during shipping. Seal the box securely.
Contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies before shipping the product.
See page 2 for contact information. Have the model, serial number, and a
description of the issue ready. You will be given an RMA (return
merchandise authorization) number to track the instrument.
Write the following information on a tag and attach it to the product:
Name and address of the owner
Product model number and serial number
RMA number
Description of service required or failure indications
Pre-pay all shipping expenses including adequate insurance.
Clearly label the box with the RMA number. If the RMA number is not
visible on the outside of the box, Teledyne CETAC reserves the right to
decline delivery and return the unopened box to you at your expense.
Mark the shipping container as FRAGILE.
In all correspondence, refer to the instrument by model name or number
and full serial number.
Do not return products which are contaminated by radioactive materials,
infectious agents, or other materials constituting health hazards to CETAC
employees.

Power Cord Set Requirements and Maintenance
The power cord set supplied with your instrument meets the requirements of
the country where you will use the instrument. If you need a different power
cord, contact Teledyne CETAC Technologies.
The operator should check the power supply cord condition. The equipment
should not be operated if the power connector is cracked or broken. Any
obvious damage to the case (from a drop or fall) should be checked by service
